Correction: The lanterns would have burnt out only minutes into the air. As no one is around for hundred of kilometers, the lanterns would not have been seen. Perhaps the drug dealers may heve seen it but they already know the backpackers are there.
True. But the sky lanterns can reach a height of 1000 feet and travel for five miles (being visible for an hour). They would have been easily seen by boats and by land. Remember, the three companions only traveled a short distance to the secret island. Flying the sky lanterns was definitely a bad idea for someone who wanted to keep the paradise island a secret... but it would make a good Hollywood movie.
