Continuity mistake: Notice Marty's hair in the scene when he's playing "Johnny B. Goode." It's quite larger than when he says, some seconds later, "I guess that you're not ready for it yet." That's because when he says that, it's a recycled shot from the original BTTF, whereas most shots showing he's playing the guitar are newly made for BTTF2. However, Marty's hair is considerably longer in the new shots.
Continuity mistake: In the scene after Marty is leaving the school hall after his performance, Lorraine and George bump into him backstage and Lorraine says, 'Marty that was very interesting m... music' with a stutter. However in the first film when she says the same line in the same scene she says it without a stutter. It is meant to be exactly the same line and scene from the previous movie.
Continuity mistake: When Marty (the Marty wearing the dark clothing) is at the dance and the Marty of 1955 is on stage is about to sing Johnny B. Goode, you can hear the 1955 Marty saying "this is a blues riff in B, watch for the changes and try to keep up" through the microphone. Yet in the original, Marty looks away from the mike when he says this and is unamplified. The quote is different as well. He says "this is a blues riff in B, watch for the changes and try to keep up" in part I, but in part 2 he says "this is a blues riff in B, watch me for the changes and keep up, OK?"
Continuity mistake: In the part where Marty is trapped in Biff's garage, Biff's rear view mirror on his car is at the very top of his windshield. Later on when Marty is holding on to the car with the hover board the rear view mirror is in the middle of his windshield. The rear-view mirror was lowered about six inches or so.
Continuity mistake: In the Café 80's just after you hear Marty say, "It is Wild Gunman", notice the three people sitting in the second booth from the back wall. When the scene changes to Marty throwing his hat on top of the game, you can see that the people have changed tables. You can also see that they are gone again when it shows a close-up of the two kids.
Continuity mistake: In the first BTTF movie, when Lorraine and Marty are sitting in the car, Lorraine takes off her coat and then asks Marty why he's so nervous. In this movie, when Marty is crouching down to get past the car, Lorraine looks at 1955 Marty and asks him why he's so nervous without taking off her coat.
Continuity mistake: When Marty avoids Griff and his thugs by jumping in the water off his hover board, his hair gets wet. After his coat dries his hair he rubs his hand through it. It gets all messy and crazy and uncombed. The very next shot shows him talking to the girls with perfectly combed hair.
Revealing mistake: When Doc and Marty arrive in 2015 when the car is landing in the alley you can see the mechanism that is lowering the car. Just as the scene switches from the front of the car (right after the headlights go out) to the back of the car, look between the car and the building at the same level as the back bumper. There is something that is moving down with the car. Also, the vents in the back of the DeLorean are different.
Continuity mistake: If you look very closely, after Marty flips on the little girl's hover board and is laying on his stomach, when he goes to get up you can see that he's wearing regular lace style tennis shoes and not the auto-lace high tops that Doc gives him as soon as they get to 2015. You may need to pause it to see them.
Continuity mistake: In the scene where the 1985 Jennifer is in her 2015 home and says "I get married in the Chapel-O-Love?" right before she picks up the picture note the Chapel-O-Love picture and frame on the bookcase behind her. After she picks it up and drops it leaving it on the floor she looks for a place to hide. Later on when the old Lorraine and George are in the living room, take another look at the picture on the bookcase; the Chapel picture is set back up. You could argue Lorraine would have had enough time to set it back up. But look at the Chapel picture; it's inserted in the frame upside down. You can tell by looking at the frame stand behind it. Meaning someone physically removed the picture and put it that way.
Audio problem: After Doc and Marty return to 1955 in an effort to steal the almanac back from Biff, they land the DeLorean. Doc says, "Here's some binoculars" then says "and" but watch his lips as he says "and", it just doesn't match. You could argue that it is a bad angle but even at the angle it's at, you get an OK view.
Revealing mistake: When Marty, in the 1955 dance, looks at his father with his binoculars, you can see that the angle of the binoculars are really misplaced. Marty is looking at him at his far front, but the binoculars' image comes more from the floor. In fact, what the binoculars show is from the first film.
Continuity mistake: At the clock tower scene at the end of the movie, you can see the DeLorean drive past a line of shops that are about 25 yards from the clock tower itself. However, in the next shot of the DeLorean, you can see that it has only gone about 50 yards from the Bluebird Motel (where it started from). In addition to this, even if there were some identical shops further up the road that Marty went past (which there more than likely aren't), you can't see any on the next shot. These shots are chronologically incorrect.
Continuity mistake: When Marty gets the sports almanac in the tunnel, he flies on the wall with his left foot in the hover-board's strap. When he flies over the car and lands on the hover-board, his right foot is in the strap of the board. After that it keeps switching legs and in or out of the strap.
Continuity mistake: At the beginning of the second movie when Marty is checking out the new car, he audibly bangs the car with his fist right below the window frame. In the version of the same scene at the end of the first movie, Marty makes a similar hand motion but does not bang the car, and there is no noise.
Continuity mistake: In Biff's apartment in alternate 1985 while Biff and Lorraine are arguing he knocks her to the ground and both her shoes come off. After Biff punches Marty in the stomach it then switches again to show Lorraine's reaction. As it does this we see her on the floor but her shoes are back on her feet. She could have had enough time to put them back on possibly but it seems unlikely that she would have done so as she is laying in the same position as when she was knocked down.
Other mistake: In the scene where Biff confronts Marty outside the swinging doors while Marty is watching himself talk to his 1955 Mom and Dad, you can see that Crispin Glover (George McFly) has been replaced with Jeffrey Weissman. There are other scenes where you can tell it isn't him, but this is the most prominent one. Glover wasn't in the 2nd movie due to him and the producers not agreeing to a movie contract. All the scenes you see him clearly were taken from the first film. (i.e. where Marty is looking at him through the binoculars at the dance).
Continuity mistake: In the Cafe 80's sequence we see little Elijah Wood and his friend investigating the Wild Gunman game. One of them asks "How do you play this Thing?" while Marty is several feet away, but Marty answers immediately while standing right next to it. So he has managed to walk about 15 feet or so in a fraction of a second.
Revealing mistake: When Griff and his gang are flying through the air and about to crash into the courthouse after the hover board chase, look at the girl on the left. Her legs hit one of the building's pillars, and her body rotates sideways, but she continues moving forward - obviously suspended by wires.
Continuity mistake: When Marvin Berry leaves the stage to call his cousin Chuck Berry, in Back to the Future II he stops and walks around a ladder that Mary climbed to get on the catwalk over the stage. Watch Back to the Future I and when he is talking on the phone there is no ladder behind him. In fact, that whole scene is different. The desk is different along with the phone and Marvin has his back to the stage in II whereas in I he is facing the stage.
Continuity mistake: In the original BTTF the photo used to determine if Marty would exist in 1985 (the one with his brother and sister) is a wallet size photo. Yet when Marty in BTTF II (with the leather jacket) sees the other Marty from BTTF look at that photo and rush back to the dance, it's a regular size photo.
Visible crew/equipment: When old Biff is driving young Biff's car to Biff's house to give him the sports almanac, zoom in on the rear bumper of the car and the area just above it. In the time from when the front tires leave the street for the driveway to when the back tires get onto the driveway, there are several frames where you can see the blurred reflection of the camera crew on the lower rear of the car. You may think that the chrome bumper would give the best reflection, but it is actually the black area just above the bumper that gives the clearest image.
Revealing mistake: When Marty is burning the almanac, during the lightening strike, the shadow of the post holding the hover-board off the ground is visible. - watch the hoverboard when the scene is illuminated by lightning strikes. The post holding up the hoverboard is also clearly visible when they pan around Marty as he is holding the burned rope from the Delorean.
Continuity mistake: During the dance hall scene, the first half of the guitar solo Marty plays (before the Eddie Van Halen section) is completely different to the one he plays in the original film. Whether this is just to give time for the jump sequence to take place or not is open to question, but all the same, although not many people would notice, it is a pretty obvious mistake.
Continuity mistake: When the DeLorean first lands in the alley in 2015, there is a shot of the back of the car as it lands. The large vents that extend out of Doc's modifications to the car are the wrong size. In most shots, they extend over the car's tail lights, however in this shot they stop above the lights. According to commentary this is a fiberglass scale model of the DeLorean used to film flying scenes, since it is lighter than the actual vehicle, so apparently the model was not quite identical to the real DeLorean.
Revealing mistake: When Griff and his gang are chasing Marty on the hoverboards in a few shots after Marty is hanging off the back of the Jeep, when the shot shows the gang catching up, the Jeep goes through some wet places in the street, showing the camera car's tire tracks. They're not the Jeep's because the tire tracks are double-wheeled and the Jeep was not turning in that shot.
Continuity mistake: In the first BTTF at the scene were George Mcfly knocks out Biff and takes Lorraine, Marty sees them while he is standing in front of a couple. When he goes through the couple to get to the band performing at the dance, the woman in the couple makes a noise and gets pushed aside as he tries to get through them. In BTTF 2 when the Marty back from 1985 is watching George Mcfly knock Biff out before he steals the Almanac, the Marty from 1955 stands in front of the couple again, but this time the couple leaves a gap for him to go through, and when he goes through the woman in the couple, she makes no noise and doesn't get pushed. It was as if she was expecting it that time. As well, the couple isn't the same.
Continuity mistake: When Biff, in the alternative 1985, presents the record book to Marty, he puts it in a safe behind a portrait, and then he closes it. Biff continues speaking and you can see that the portrait is slowly opening again. Cut to Marty, then back to Biff, and you can see that now the portrait is completely closed.
Plot hole: If Old Biff changed his past and went back to 2015, he goes back to HIS future, not the bad future, but Doc later tells Marty that if he were to go to the future to stop Biff from taking the almanac, he'd go to the bad future, so Old Biff technically shouldn't have been able to return to "his" future at all.
Continuity mistake: When Marty first enters the Cafe 80's you can see behind him the two kids playing the working video game. The next scene that shows them the kids are still playing the game. However the third time you see the game it is now off with no kids in front of it. The next time it is shown the kids proclaim "they got it working" and walk from behind the machine and start playing.
Continuity mistake: At the start of this film (and the end of the prior film), Marty and Jennifer talk with Doc who has just returned from the future to retrieve them. A shot looks over the rear half of the DeLorean at Marty and Jenn and we see the street behind them. Ignoring that Jennifer is now played by a different actress, there is a tree missing behind her, as is the truck with a camper-shell that was two driveways back. Parked in the street is a VW bus where a Pontiac Firebird was. Marty has also gained a wristwatch not present in the same scene in the earlier film.
Continuity mistake: At the start when the DeLorean crashes into the line of six bins on the driveway one of the bins is half open. It is one from the right. In the next shot when Dr. Brown gets out the bin that is half open is two from the right. Then a bit later when the DeLorean comes out of the driveway all the bin lids are closed. The bin lids were never closed all through the scene.
Continuity mistake: After George knocks out Biff, Biff has an obvious contusion and blood on the right side of his nose and mouth. As the hoverboard chase scene progresses over the next several minutes (particularly in the lighted tunnel), the contusion and blood repeatedly disappear and reappear on Biff's face from one camera cut to the next.

Factual error: Marty is pursuing Biff at the high school as the other Marty pulls up with Lorraine in Doc's car. In the parking lot, the car closest to Biff is a brown 1957 Chevrolet. The front grill and styling are distinct and unique to the 1957 model year. In November 1955, it would be plausible to see a 56 Chevy in the lot, but a '57 is a bit early.
Continuity mistake: At the end of BTTF 1, when Doc tells Marty and Jennifer that they have to come back with him to 2015, while they are sitting in the DeLorean, the Doc says," ...where we're going we don't need (pause) roads," and as he says "roads" he puts his silver glasses on normally. But in the beginning of BTTF 2 in the same scene, when he says," ...where we're going we don't need (pause) roads, he swings his glasses on really fast with only one swish as he says "roads."
Continuity mistake: When Marty is reading the letter from the Western Union man, he's standing with the letter in front of him at chest level. Switch to side camera angle and he is now bent over, holding the letter down to the car's headlight. Switch angle again and he's standing up again, with the letter back in front of him.
Continuity mistake: At the end of BTTF, when Doc drives up to Marty's driveway and tells Marty and Jennifer to get in the car to go to the future, Marty asks Doc, 'Why, what happens? Do we become a**holes or something?' Then Doc replies straight away 'No, you and Jennifer turn out fine, it's your kids, something's gotta be done about your kids.' At the start of BTTF2 when the same scene is played again, Marty asks the same question but this time Doc pauses before he replies to Marty's question.
Continuity mistake: When Biff and Marty fighting over the almanac while driving towards the tunnel, the almanac flies out of their hands and lands on the front windshield. Biff slowly reaches over the windshield blocking the center rearview mirror entirely with his right shoulder. Cut camera angle and the mirror is unblocked, showing Marty to the rear of the car, then a reaction shot of Biff seeing Marty in the mirror, all while he is still blocking the mirror with his shoulder.
Continuity mistake: When Marty gets locked in Biff's garage, we see that he can't push through the two garage doors because there's a lock on the other side. Yet, when Biff comes out to go to the Prom dance, he opens them in literally no time at all with no resistance. We don't even hear him unlock them.
Continuity mistake: When Biff is trying to run down Marty on the hoverboard, as he comes out of the tunnel there is a shot of the manure truck driving down the road. Cut camera angle to Biff missing Marty and hitting the truck, which is now at a dead stop, however there was not adequate time to do this and appears that the truck was driving then instantly stopped.
Plot hole: After Biff steals the DeLorean and travels back to 1955 with the Sports Almanac the movie states that he creates an alternate timeline. Doc Brown does a good job of illustrating this on a chalkboard. So if, as Doc Brown states, Biff created an alternate timeline, then when he travels back to 2015 it would be the alternate 2015. Even if the original timeline stays intact with Doc and Marty in it, they'd be trapped there because Biff took the Delorean and returned it to the new timeline, not the one they're in.
Continuity mistake: When the DeLorean lands in Hilldale in 2015, just before it touches the ground look at the wheel nuts. They are in a plus sign position (around the black centre. However when the car lands the nuts have changed to a X shape position. The wheel nuts change to the X shape position from the plus shape in the next shot as the car lands.
Continuity mistake: When Marvin, the band member, goes to call Chuck Berry about Marty's "new sound", the telephone he uses has a black neoprene coiled handset cord. In the first BTTF, the phone had a straight, uncoiled brown cloth handset cord (seen when he says, "Well then listen to this." and holds the handset out toward the stage). This isn't because the cord was stretched out, as neoprene cords can't stretch so much that they look uncoiled.
Continuity mistake: At the start, the DeLorean hits the left dustbin and comes to a halt. At the other side of the street, there is only one car parking near to a house. From another angle there's a different red car parking on the other side of the street, and the tree that stood between both houses has gone.
Continuity mistake: When the rain stops after Marty and Doc first get out of the DeLorean in 2015, Doc looks up at the rapidly clearing sky. Directly above their heads the sun is shining brightly. However, if you look at the tops of the buildings you can see sunlight hitting them from the sides. I suppose we will have another sun by 2015?
Revealing mistake: Throughout this movie and Part III, whenever there is a special effect, like two Biffs in one scene, the scenes with the flying cars, and basically whenever an actor is playing three or four roles at the same time, if you look very carefully, you can see the picture flash ever so slightly repeatedly. It looks almost as if the picture is throbbing a bit. Might be more visible if viewed on the DVD.
Continuity mistake: Right at the start of the movie where Doc Brown pulls up on the drive of Marty's house, we see a panning shot as Marty and Jennifer walk to the DeLorean - there are no vehicles parked on that side of the street. A moment later as Marty waves his hand in front of the Doc's glasses, there's a green VW bus parked almost outside the house. Then as the Doc's looking through the rubbish bin, the VW's moved further down the street. Then as the DeLorean backs off the drive, there's a yellow VW bus there instead.

Other mistake: A book that thin would not be able to hold even one year of statistics of all sports at the detail level purported in the film. When we see the pages (for example in the tunnel, when the book is in the wind screen of the car) we can see that the font is quite large, and there are even text sections - it is not all tables and numbers. And it can't just be regional results, since we hear about a college football match, which is listed in the book.

Plot hole: When Old Biff goes back to 1955 to give himself the almanac, he comes back in the Delorean to the version of 2015 that he left, not the other, skewed version in which he is rich. Everything in 1955 should have changed around the Doc and Marty, as the Doc tells Marty everything will change around Jennifer and Einstein later on in 1985, when Marty and the Doc go back to restore normalcy. George is alive in this future, so we know the skewed version hasn't taken hold.
Audio problem: When Marty follows Biff into the dance hall trying to get the sports almanac, right after he uses his binoculars he exits the dance hall. If you listen carefully to the music, the music plays uninterrupted, when given the jump in scene it should skip to a further point in the song.
