Continuity mistake: The shots at the end of the movie with the emperor are obviously lit from the front. This exposed too much of the emperor's head inside the cowl so it was darkened to make him look more menacing. Look for the added shadow - it looks like someone took a black magic marker and coloured on the film. (This may be corrected on the re-release).
Continuity mistake: When Luke is prodded out to 'walk the plank', into the Sarlaac pit, he jumps off the board and springs himself back up. If you watch this carefully, you can see that only one hand catches the board and that just by the fingertips, but in the next shot both hands are springing him upwards.
Continuity mistake: When Leia gets shoved on Jabba's belly upon her capture, watch carefully - in the side shot of her being pressed against him, we see her arching back from her master-to-be as he talks. Their faces are a good foot or so apart. However, in the next shot of her, we see her face is mere inches away from him as he licks his lips in horny anticipation.
Continuity mistake: When Jabba pulls Leia's chain, there is a long shot as she leaps up onto his throne, and he is holding his wine goblet in his left hand, and pulling her chain with his right. However, in the very next shot (in which he says "Soon you will learn to appreciate me"), the entire frame is reversed. This is evident in Jabba's holding the wine in his "right" hand, his higher-placed nostril (which is normally on the left on his face) is now on the "right," Leia's reversal of her armlet, etc.
Revealing mistake: When Vader throws the lightsaber at Luke and the platform collapses, the point where the platform's columns connect to the ceiling have expanding circles of smoke coming from them as the columns detach from the ceiling, created by the charges used to sever the platform.
Continuity mistake: On Endor, when the stormtroopers come to take Luke away, the door of the lift is heard opening, the stormtroopers are heard walking, and then they appear behind Luke three seconds after the door opened. But in the next shot, we can see that Luke and Vader are too far away from the lift for the stormtroopers to reach them that quickly.
Revealing mistake: When 3PO and R2 are being assigned to their droidly duties in Jabba's palace, there is a shot of a poor droid having hot irons branding his feet. The irons are never closer than an inch from the droid's feet, and the steam that allegedly comes from the burning is obviously being shot out of holes in the droid's feet.
Other mistake: In the original version, when the Rebel fleet reaches the Death Star, Lando says, "Fighters coming in" and the Millennium Falcon flies towards the screen. If you play it in slow motion when the Falcon leaves the screen, you can see two white figures shaped like TIE fighters on the Falcon's underside. As the Falcon leaves the shot, they disappear. This has been fixed in the Special Edition.
Continuity mistake: After the Death Star explodes, in the first shot of the Ewoks, a grey one is standing next to Chewbacca (who can be seen on the extreme right). In the next shot, this Ewok has disappeared, and another one is standing next to C-3PO. This Ewok has disappeared in the following shot, and a third one, who was nowhere to be seen in the previous shot, is now standing in front of Chewbacca. Also, C-3PO, Chewbacca and the Rebel next to him are standing in different positions between shots.
Continuity mistake: When Jabba pulls Leia's chain in the sail barge, Bib Fortuna is standing on the right side of the screen, a few meters away. He then takes one step forward, but in the next shot he is suddenly standing behind Leia, as he's pushing her against Jabba. He was too far away from them in the previous shot to have reached them that quickly.
Continuity mistake: When they get ambushed in the shield generator complex, an imperial in black appears from the right of the screen in front of the ledge with the railing. Han throws the container in his hands at the imperial. If you notice, the imperial actually begins to jump over the railing before the box even hits him.
Revealing mistake: Right before Luke leaps from the speeder bike to the scout trooper's speeder, there's a shot showing the front of the speeders. Notice the area surrounding the speeders in this shot. During the rest of the speeder bike chase, the speeders pass through this area several times, even though they are not flying in circles. This can be seen, for example, from the sunlight hitting the ground and the tree on the left side with a bush in front of it. Also, one of the shots where this area is seen is the shot before the speeders pass two more scout troopers, but the background has been flipped.
Other mistake: When the ground battle on Endor begins, Leia runs to the bunker, and as the doors close, she fires a shot. In the original version of the movie, the blaster smokes, but no laser beam comes out of it and no sound is heard (do not confuse this with the sound of the doors closing). In the Special Edition, the sound has been added, but the laser is still missing. Play it in slow motion for confirmation.
Continuity mistake: When Luke and Han are being executed on Tatooine, Han says his eyes are getting better but still bad. Then he looks directly at Luke and says "You're gonna die here." In the very next line of dialog, Han's head is turned a different way. It looks like it was a different shot.
Continuity mistake: At the end of the scene when the Emperors and Darth Vader walks through the Death Star's hangar, you can see that the Emperor walks past a squad of grey suited commanders. But in the next shot there are only white dressed storm troopers and scout troopers on the right side of the Emperor. And if you compare the last shot in the scene with the earlier shots you can see differences in the soldiers' placements.
Audio problem: When Lando is inside the Death Star we see a shot of him scraping the side of some metal. Then he says "That was too close." His voice has the same echo applied to it as the sound effects in the narrow metal tunnel. For unknown reasons this mistake wasn't even fixed in the DVD.

Continuity mistake: When Vader's shuttle is approaching the Death Star, the crew in the control room of the Death Star are wearing black gloves. One of them then reaches forward to press a button, but in the close-up of his hand pressing the button, the hand is not wearing gloves at all. This can only be seen in the widescreen version.
Continuity mistake: During Luke and Vader's conversation on Endor, as Vader says, "That name no longer has any meaning for me," he is pointing the hilt of Luke's lightsabre at Luke's chest. In the next shot facing Luke, the hilt is nowhere to be seen, even though it should be, because of its position in the previous shot.
Other mistake: During the final confrontation with Vader on the Death Star, Luke bashes a catwalk railing with his light saber several times, but there are no burns, marks, or indentations on it at all. Considering the power of a light saber (Qui Gon melted a steel door in Phantom Menace), some damage should be visible. Only when he hacks off Vader's hand does the light saber slice through the rail.
Continuity mistake: When Lando says, "Fighters coming in," a whole bunch of TIE fighters come towards them. There's initially a lot anyway, but then after about a second, two horizontal lines of 4 fighters appear from nowhere (centre screen, underneath the Super Star Destroyer). They suddenly just pop into existence, large enough that we should have seen them approaching.
Continuity mistake: After Vader's shuttle lands on Endor, as the AT-AT is walking towards one of the ramps, you can see that the ramps are connected right next to the lift, under the landing pad. But when Vader exits the lift, there's a circular platform going around the lift, which wasn't there in the previous shots.
Continuity mistake: On the forest moon of Endor, when the stormtrooper punches Han, he falls and has a blaster in his hand but it disappears when he hits the ground. He can't have thrown it during the time he was falling, because he shot accidentally when he was near the ground. If he has thrown it, it should have been near him.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Luke and the others are trapped in the net, the dead animal changes appearance (both injuries and actual appearance) and position several times. For example, the animal seen when they are in the net has a different mouth and a bigger area of white fur from the one seen a few shots earlier.
Continuity mistake: Before the Emperor gives permission to fire the Death Star, in the scene at the bridge of the Star Destroyer, the blue rank insignia of Admiral Piett and another Imperial officer is coloured black. This is probably caused by bluescreen effects replacing everything blue with the colour of space. This can also be seen when a Rebel ship hits the Star Destroyer at the end of the film.
Continuity mistake: In the bunker, just after R2 gets shot, Han tries to hotwire the door. A second blast door closes, and you can see that it is very flat and cardboard looking. A few moments later, Leia gets shot, and as Han is tending to her, notice that the door is now massively armored and three-dimensional, completely different from the door seen earlier.
Revealing mistake: In the wide-shot where Luke leaps from the prisoner skiff over to another skiff, you can see the stick used during the filming, which is much shorter than the regular one. The blade is not even glowing. (It is not just simply the hilt of the sabre, it's too long for that.).
Continuity mistake: When the little Ewok finds Leia, and she rises up, he points his spear at her and you can see that the front of his leather hood is over the spear's shaft. The shot changes to Leia, the back to the Ewok and now spear is over the hood, the shots change again and now the hood's front is crumbled up between the spear and the Ewok´s body.
Continuity mistake: In the beginning of the scene where Luke is being electrocuted by the Emperor, the Emperor is standing at the bottom of the stairs. When he says, "Young fool... Only now, at the end, do you understand", he is standing in front of the great window. However, in the next shot of the Emperor, he is standing at the bottom of the stairs again, before he walks down to his previous position.
Other mistake: Widescreen version: When Han calls after Luke and Leia when they leave on the speeder bike, the head of the stormtrooper that attacks him can be seen in the lower right hand corner, as the actor is waiting for his cue. After Han calls after Luke and Leia, the stormtrooper suddenly pops up and attacks him.
Other mistake: After the catwalk that Luke is standing on collapses, Vader walks down the stairs to find him. In the first shot, there's a shadow of a lightsabre blade on the right side of the steps, but Vader's sabre is extinguished at this point. It can't be the shadow of Luke's sabre. Widescreen version only.
Continuity mistake: This is a 'Special Edition' error only. After the scene in Jabba's palace when R2D2 and C3P0 are assigned their 'duties' we see the audience chamber in their party, and Jabba holding his dancing girl's leash. When the first song ends, Jabba says 'Do that again' and his hands are empty. When next he's shown, the leash is back in his hands.
Continuity mistake: When Han, Luke and Chewbacca are sentenced to death, there's a strange alien with a long tongue hanging from the ceiling, in the upper, left hand corner. In some shots, the creature is moving, in other shots, it is completely still and appears to be asleep or something.
Continuity mistake: In one quick scene when Luke's hologram is talking to Jabba, the film has been reversed. The camera shows Jabba sucking on his 'bong' and then pans down to Salacious Crumb. However, during the Jabba shot, the air bubbles in the 'bong' are going down, as opposed to surfacing. Behind Jabba, you can see the smoke created is also going downward.
Continuity mistake: In the lightsabre duel between Luke and Darth Vader, Luke chops off Vader's hand twice before Vader falls down. The first shot shows Lukes lightsabre striking Vader's wrist, and Vader's hand separating from the wrist. The second shot is from behind and shows the lightsabre chopping Vader's hand clean off his wrist, then it sparks.
Revealing mistake: When the Tydirium shuttle is flying toward the imperial spaceships, there's a frontal shot of it and a strange thing appears near the shuttle for a few frames. It's not the kind of marks that appears on an old film, or a special effects box. It's like a problem with the mate painting.

Continuity mistake: Vader tosses the Emperor and then collapses on some barrels next to the railing. Look at Vader's arm - the one with the severed hand. His arm is bent at the forearm in a way that arms just don't bend. This is because David Prowse's hand was inside an "elongated" arm to simulate it being chopped off. He couldn't keep his wrist straight, giving the appearance of a bent forearm.
Revealing mistake: The interior matte paining of the hangar on the Rebel ship holding the stolen Imperial shuttle doesn't match the appearance of the hangar from the exterior shot of the Rebel ship. The interior hangar shows an extended platform and four banks of vertical lights bordering the opening and then walls. From the exterior, the hangar appears to have a big light bank near the opening, and then thinner light banks behind it spaced farther apart than the interior shot. The exterior shot also doesn't have a platform.

Continuity mistake: Look at the full body shot of the holographic Luke. Luke, who normally has his lightsabre clipped to his left hip, now has it hung from his right hip. As well, his hair, which normally has a part on his left hand side, is now parted on the right. Afterwards, just before Artoo turns the message off, we get a shot from behind Artoo, and Luke's hologram is visible on the extreme right of the screen. Luke's lightsabre is now hanging from his left hip where it normally is.
Revealing mistake: In many of the scenes taking place in outer space, if you look closely you can see polygon borders surrounding space vehicles (X-Wings, Star Destroyers, and even the Death Star) indicating the objects being superimposed into the outer space background. [This mistake may only apply to the Blu Ray version.]

Continuity mistake: When R2-D2 is shot by an Imperial stormtrooper whilst trying to open the shield generator's doors, he goes into the side wall and you can see a door open on his body with an interface arm sticking out of it. But when Han shoots the stormtrooper dead, we cut back to R2, and the door that was originally open is now closed.
Continuity mistake: When the Rebel fleet is preparing to make the jump to hyperspace to the second Death Star, the small fighters move first. Then the big ships. But when the big ships move into hyperspace, there are only the Medical Frigate, some transports and some Blockade Runners. What happened with the big Correllian command ships?
