Why do the writers and producers of 'Heroes' feel the need to kill such great characters? For example, The German. His power was pretty cool and could have been a major new villain in the third season, but they killed him off. Another would be Elle. Why her? She was such a great character. [The writers kill off characters as and when it serves the purposes of the overall story for them to die. All characters have some potential to them - just as with real life, not all of them will get to live up to that potential. It sucks when a favourite character is killed off, but that's the nature of a TV show - characters, particularly recurring characters like Elle or minor villains like the German, are going to die on a regular basis.]

How exactly does Sylar acquire other powers? I know it has something to do with the victims brain, but what exactly? [It's not been made 100% clear. It was originally assumed that he actually consumed part of the brain, but this has turned out not to be the case. Sylar has been shown all along to have an instinctive knowledge of how things work and how to fix them - this is his actual original power and the ability that made him an exceptional watchmaker and repairer. It appears that he uses a similar process when acquiring new powers - he exposes the brain of the target, allowing him to examine it and determine how their power functions. He can then apply that knowledge to his own brain, allowing him to replicate the ability in question.]

What are the limits of Sylar's telekinesis? Can he use use it to fly perhaps? [He's certainly been shown to use it to levitate, so full flight is probably within his capabilities. His exact limits are unknown, but are undoubtedly pretty high - he throws a police van around with no obvious effort towards the end of season one and has shown himself to be skilled enough to manipulate many different objects at once, as when he used the glass fragments against the invisible Peter Petrelli.]

Exactly why do The Company and their agents conduct bag and tag missions? Is it simply to study evolved humans and their powers? Or do they have something more sinister in mind? Also, why bag and tag at all? Why not just talk to the people they target? [It's partly study, partly containment, partly potential recruitment. Simply talking to the targets isn't going to get them what they need to know - they're looking for detailed genetic information, plus they want to install the tracking isotopes, neither of which could be done during a pleasant chat.]

At the end of the episode, when Peter starts to glow, why doesn't he just fly or teleport away to a safe location instead of having to rely on Nathan to fly him away? [Peter doesn't have perfect control over any of his abilities - he has to be able to focus on certain mental keys to be able to use them with any degree of certainty. With his acquired radioactivity power beginning to run out of control, any possibility of focus is gone - he's scared, he's in considerable discomfort if not outright pain. He's simply not able to do it, so Nathan has to step in to help get him clear of the area.]

How exactly does Peter Petrelli acquire that pretty nifty looking facial scar, even though he's absorbed regeneration? Is it even explained? [(POSSIBLE SPOILER WARNING) Peter lost his regeneration ability and can now only possess one power at a time. He may yet get the scar.]
Towards the end of the episode but before the climatic battle between Sylar and Peter, Sylar, disguised as Nathan through the power of illusion, walks calmly towards Peter and then reverts back to his own form/image. To my knowledge there are four people who are there to witness this: Peter, Matt Parkman and two unnamed SWAT officers with a battering ram. It is understandable if the two SWAT officers didn't see this transformation, but Matt? Surely he must have seen? He was a few feet from him, yet he didn't even bat an eyelid? Why is this? His superior transformed into a well-known killer. [Simple, he changes the illusion for peter, but keeps the others thinking he is still Nathan, he can make different illusions at once.]

I don't understand the motives behind The Company, i.e. Kaito Nakamura and Angela Petrelli, giving Claire Bennet to Noah Bennet to look after. Why couldn't Angela or her biological father Nathan look after her? Also, why did Kaito order Noah to hand Claire over when her ability manifests? I thought the whole point was that she would be looked after and not experimented on? [1) Seeing as how Nathan was the prominent son of the Petrelli family it probably would not do well for it to be public knowledge that he has fathered an illegitimate child. As Nathan's mother and a founder of The Company, Angela Petrelli certainly would have a say. 2) The Company would probably want Claire when her powers manifest to determine their scope and potential danger, possibly even attempt to recruit her a la the "One of Us, One of Them" policy.]

Is Claude's invisibility limited only to the visible light spectrum? Could he perhaps use it to manipulate say, the infrared and ultraviolet spectrums? [There's no indication that it applies to anything other than the visible light spectrum.]

Throughout the show, The Haitian has been shown to nullify the powers of evolved humans. Yet, why on the rooftop was he unable to nullify Claude and Peter's invisibility? Doesn't his power work as well as those that require active concentration? [The Haitian doesn't automatically stop every power around him, he does it at will (eg when he doesn't focus and lets Nathan fly away). by using infra-red goggles they can sneak up on Peter and Claude, whereas forcing them to become visible would have alerted them too soon.]

Hope the showgirl locks Hiro in a small closet. He makes several unsuccessful attempts to escape by running and charging towards the door. Why doesn't he simply teleport out? Surely a lot simpler and a lot less painful? [Hiro's powers are still quite unreliable, and a locked closet door isn't a huge obstacle. Since Hiro knows he needs to rescue Ando, it's probably safer to try and bash the door down than risk teleporting to the wrong place or time.]

During Sylar's examination, Hank informs Mr. Bennet that they've been trying to find the codon switches that identify his powers, but they're unable to identify any of them except for telekinesis. How can this be? [Sylar's powers are stolen and forcibly impressed into his DNA, unlike most of the empowered characters where the DNA is natural. It's entirely understandable that his powers might be more difficult to determine under those circumstances.]

After Eden McCain shoots herself to prevent Sylar from consuming her power, it's stated that her body was found in a river, presumably dumped by The Company. Throughout the show, The Company have been shown to be a highly resourceful organisation. Why, with all that resourcefulness, would the company dump her in a river? Why not just cremate her? [They want to leave evidence shes dead. After all, she is a wanted felon herself, from before she was recruited.]

How is Sylar able to resist Eden's power of persuasion, when she tells him to kill himself? [We don't know the extent of Sylar's powers. It's possible he's taken powers from someone that allows him to resist Eden, or maybe his willpower alone is strong enough.]
Sylar informs Mr. Bennet that as soon as he gets out of containment he's going to collect one more ability from his daughter. To my knowledge they have never met before so this would be the first time they've actually met each other face to face. How does Sylar know Claire Bennet is Mr. Bennet's daughter? [It is stated in "Six Months Ago" that Claire was on the list that Chandra had, which Sylar had access to.]

Why does Sylar choose the homecoming event to kill Claire and take her power? Surely a person as clever as Sylar would realise that it would be full of people and that there would be a risk of capture (which is exactly what happens). Why not wait until Claire is asleep? Or follow her when she's on her own and corner her in an alley? [Sylar's not bothered about the risk of capture - his confidence in his abilities is high enough that he probably thinks that he would be impossible to take down anyway. And you have to remember that he's driven by a hunger to take new abilities - he's not going to be happy with the idea of waiting for the perfect moment. She's relatively isolated, her only companion being another cheerleader, no reason to wait.]

Why exactly do The Company want New York City destroyed? Is it so that they can manipulate Nathan into becoming president, ensuring he becomes their puppet? [Not exactly. Their intent is that the destruction of New York will act as a focus for the entire nation, a rallying point of sorts. The plan is that Nathan will be in a position to show strong leadership after the explosion, giving him a high public profile and a strong support base as the outraged and shocked nation unites behind him. This support could then be used to put him into the White House where he can continue to further their agenda. Not so much a puppet, more a willing ally, but the effect is much the same.]

What was the deal between the whole Niki/Jessica thing? Was Jessica a figment of Niki's imagination, a split personality, or something else entirely? [Jessica is Niki's dead sister, so Niki somehow embodied the escence of Jessica and against her own will just switches to her sister's personality to take on another persona.]

Throughout the first season, Sylar has been shown to survive a number of deadly situations, from being shot at in "One Giant Leap" and "Distractions" to falling from a great height in "Homecoming." My question is, how could he survive all of these incidences when he hadn't yet absorbed Claire's ability of regeneration? [Telekinesis. Stop or deflect the bullets, slow his fall so that he'll survive. Very useful power.]

Just who is Angela Petrelli speaking to on the telephone towards the end of the episode when she states that she understands the reason for the attack on Nathan, but that the assassination attempt has "opened Pandora's box"? Also, what did she mean in reference to Pandora's box?
At the end of the episode, Sylar injected himself with a cure to rid himself of the Shanti virus. Upon injecting himself he used his telekinesis to summon a tin can to him. My question is, how was he able to retain his telekinesis when the Shanti virus completely removed all of his acquired powers? [Sylar is supposed to be able to copy powers through empathic mimicry, as we see him do with Elle's electrical abilities. If he does that, then it appears that the powers genuinely become innate to him, as if they were his from the start, whereas if he takes them in his usual way, they don't - he has access to them, but they don't become innate and thus can be erased by the Shanti virus. When Gabriel killed Brian Davis to take his telekinetic ability, he felt terrible guilt over having done so and thus his empathic mimicry kicked in, making the telekinesis an ability which the Shanti virus couldn't remove. This is also why the Company could only detect his telekinesis when examining him, despite the fact that he possessed many other abilities at the time.]

He wants to do something to stop humanity going through the same cycle of death and destruction that gets played out every so often. By releasing the Shanti virus, he'll wipe out the vast majority of the human race, dropping the demand for Earth's diminishing resources to a manageable level and allowing the survivors to start over with a relatively clean slate.]

Why does Peter use telekinesis to open the vault? Why doesn't he simply phase through? [Because he's an idiot. From the story point of view, they needed the vault to actually be physically open so that the release of the virus would be a credible threat. Unfortunately, this required that Peter conveniently forget that he could simply walk through the wall and use his telekinesis to tear the door open instead. Peter's increasingly large arsenal of abilities, where he ended up having pretty much any ability required for any situation, led to a situation where it became necessary to either have Peter apparently forget that he had a given power, as with the vault door scene, or become naively trusting, as with his refusal to scan Adam's mind to confirm his good intent. This problem, which simply made Peter look increasingly dumb as the show progressed, may well have been a key factor in the decision to severely reduce his ability during season three.]

Exactly why did The Company create and experiemnt with a dangerous and life-threatening disease such as The Shanti Virus? Surely they must have known the risks? [They didn't create it - it first manifested in Shanti Suresh. Their original reason for experimenting on it was probably to find a cure, just as real-world virus labs experiment on highly contagious viruses with that aim in mind. However, the effect of blocking access to powers was clearly of use to the Company in dealing with powered individuals, so their experiments also produced alternative strains of the virus, including the one used on Sylar and Niki Sanders that removed their abilities. These experiments may also have resulted in the ability negation pills given to Peter Petrelli during his time as a "guest" of the Company between seasons one and two. While the risks are obviously considerable, careful security precautions can be set up to guard against accidental release. Somebody insane enough to wish to release one intentionally is, of course, another matter entirely...]

Why exactly did Angela Petrelli present Bridget Bailey to Sylar? What could Angela possibly gain from Sylar killing and absorbing her power of Clairsentience? Also, why did Bridget just stand there? Surely, working for The Company, she knows who Sylar is? [Angela intends to turn Sylar into an asset to the company. By allowing him to take Bridget's power, Angela's hoping to create a bond of trust between them. If it doesn't work, then the Company's not lost an agent with an effective combat power, nor have they given Sylar a power that could make him any more dangerous. If it does work, they trade an agent with a minor ability for a new agent of extraordinary power who still has that same ability, so they've lost nothing. As for poor Bridget, yes, she probably does know who Sylar is, but she could hardly anticipate that Angela would bring her, a loyal agent, down to the holding cells to "feed" her to a serial killer. We never see her after Angela says that she's there to feed Sylar - for all we know, she did try to run, but didn't even make it out of the door before Sylar got her.]

When Arthur steals Adam's power, why does he crumble to dust? [Adam is hundreds of years old, and has been kept alive only through his regenerative powers. When that is taken away from him, the years catch up on him, and his body ages so rapidly that he is instantly mummified and crumbles to dust.]

I don't get it. How can an eclipse stop evolved humans from accessing their abilities? [As of season three it has not been explained. The characters gained powers after the solar eclipse of the first episode and temporarily lost them during "The Eclipse". It could be some form of cosmological radiation, Hiro and Ando make Superman analogies (who only has special powers because of Earth's yellow sun), Suresh believes it may be coincidental, or it might possibly be related to the catalyst, or it could be influenced by an as yet unseen character.]

Why did Arthur Petrelli steal Peter's powers? Was it because he simply wanted them, to add to his collection as it were, or because he saw him as a threat? [Both, really. Peter is undoubtedly powerful enough to cause a serious problem, so nullifying him makes sense on a tactical level. It's also understandable that a power thief like Arthur could hardly resist the temptation to obtain so many new powers in one go when he's used to stealing them one at a time.]

What exactly IS 'The Catalyst'? Are there any theories? [It's never explained. There are probably many fan theories, but none can currently be considered to hold any weight. With the catalyst lost when Arthur died (something confirmed by the writers), it is unlikely that the concept will be revisited at any point and thus the exact nature of the catalyst must remain a mystery.]

What's Arthur Petrelli's motivation for wanting to create a formula that gives people powers? [He feels that powered people are superior to normal humans (much like Magneto from the X-Men franchises) but is aware that the powered people are still a tiny minority and thus are easy to persecute. He also has a similar hunger for powers like Sylar - the more people who have powers, the more there are for him to take.]

If Adam Monroe hadn't have had his power absorbed by Arthur Petrelli and subsequently died, would he have died anyway by the time of the eclipse? [Probably not - he survived through earlier eclipses unscathed. The eclipse appears to negate powers, but doesn't appear to actually remove them, as they all return once the eclipse finished. Arthur's ability, on the other hand, forcibly strips powers away from people, which is something of a different thing. Adam can apparently survive a temporary negation, but having his ability removed completely resulted in his death.]

Maury objects quite heavily at the idea of Arthur giving the order to murder his son, Matt. Why is this? In season 2, Maury is shown to use his telepathy on Matt in a harmful way, not to mention the fact he abandoned him when he was quite young. [There's something of a difference between Maury using his powers against Matt to take him out of the equation and actually killing him. Maury is prepared to work against his son if necessary, but doesn't want to see him dead.]

How exactly does Arthur Petrelli's ability of Power absorption work? How does he take powers and integrate them? Is there any chance of returning the stolen power/s to the original recipient? Also, after he absorbs an ability, what affect does it have on the person who's had their ability absorbed? Does the original recipient have any chance of regaining his/her original power? [No explanation is ever given as to precisely how the process works. The subject is rendered powerless. If Arthur had the ability to return the ability if he wished to, it's certainly not shown in the show and it seems unlikely that he would have been interested in doing so. Later events suggest that the stolen power is not actually completely gone, as Peter Petrelli was able to use the power-serum to partially restore his own absorption ability, and Hiro's power is eventually partly revived by the infant Matt Parkman, suggesting that, in both cases, some vestiges of their original ability was still present.]
