Continuity: In the 7th episode of Season 5, the scenes when the "Storm-Trooper" (actually, a robot) passes by the window do not match. The first time we see it, from the outside, as soon as he passes, Robin notices him and points towards him, but the second time, from the inside, she doesn't point at him.
Revealing: Almost all the taxi cabs used across the show have the code 9Z72 on top. Obviously it is the same cab they use for every episode, they don't even bother changing the sign.
Pilot (season 1, episode 1)
Continuity: When Marshall and Barney are talking in the back of the cab, the red-edged black book on the dashboard moves back and forth between shots, though the cab is stationary.
Continuity: When the group are at the bar, just as Ted asks Barney's opinion, Marshall's beer bottle goes from at his mouth to on the table in a second.
Continuity: When Robin steps out of her front door to give Ted directions, she wraps her cardigan around herself. In the next shot the cardigan is instantly open, and she wraps it around herself again.
Continuity: When Marshall is pouring champagne, the amount poured is much less than that shown when they all raise their glasses.
Continuity: When Ted tells Robin that he loves her, Robin's hair jumps from behind to in front of her ear between shots.

Continuity: After Ted's Saturday night party (second of the three), when Ted, Lily and Marshall are sitting on the couch, numerous things change or suddenly appear behind them. Clothing is instantly on the back of the yellow chair and black chair, a wood chair appears, furniture moves, etc.
Continuity: When Marshall runs after Ted to tell him to get French Onion Dip, his robe keeps changing from crossed over his chest to straight down.
Continuity: In the closing scene at the bar, the level of beer in Marshall's glass goes up and down without him drinking any. Also, the glass goes from in his hand to on the table in an instant between shots.
Continuity: In the opening scene at the bar, when Ted is debating whether or not to ask out Robin, Marshall's beer is in his hand when the camera is on him, but on the table when the shot is from behind him.

Character mistake: After learning that the guy who he thought was hitting on Lily is gay, Marshall says "I've never been in a fight". However, in Season 4, "The Fight", he states that he has been in plenty of fights with his brothers.
Continuity: When Marshall is on the phone to Barney, the green highlighter jumps back and forth from on the desk to on top of the open book.

Continuity: When Robin is talking to her boss about his dog, the pens and pencils in the holder on his desk change depending on the camera angle.
Continuity: After Natalie throws spaghetti at Ted, the amount and position of the spaghetti pieces changes instantly between shots.
Continuity: When Barney is crouched down, leaning against Robin's chair, the money in his right hand vanishes between shots.
Continuity: When the gang are discussing what Ted should say to break up with Natalie, the amount of beer in Marshall's glass goes up and down between shots.
Continuity: When Steph is telling Ted that she used to star in adult films, we see her pick up the mini corn with her chopsticks from one angle, then the shot changes and she picks it up again.
Continuity: In the final scene at the bar, Barney is seen eating the olive from his drink and discarding the stick. A second later, when the shot changes, the olive and stick are back in his glass.

Continuity: In the opening scene at the bar, Ted's beer bottle moves from in his hand on his lap to on the table between shots.
Continuity: When the bartender holds up the napkin with the price of the drinks on it, he is holding it straight. The shot cuts to the view from behind, and the napkin is now held at a clear angle.
Continuity: When they first arrive at the club we see Barney, in close up, undo some of his top shirt buttons. A few seconds later, he is seen in the background with his shirt buttoned.
Slutty Pumpkin (season 1, episode 6)
Character mistake: Robin says in this episode that she never played team sports and was always a loner. However in a later episode, (The Prom episode) she mentions she missed her prom due to field hockey nationals.
Continuity: At dinner, Robin starts eating the ice cream sundae and knocks the cherry off the top. In the next scene, when she passes the sundae to Mike, the cherry is back neatly on top and the sundae looks untouched.
Continuity: At the bar, when Robin is telling the gang about Mike, Marshall's beer moves from in his hand to on the table between shots. Also, the amount of beer in the glass changes frequently depending on the camera angle.
Continuity: When Barney arrives at the apartment in his Top Gun outfit, we see him hang his sunglasses off his collar twice without removing them in between.
Continuity: When Barney is at the apartment in his Top Gun costume, the position his helmet is in on the coffee table changes between shots. Sometimes the front of the helmet faces the camera, at other times it is sideways.
Matchmaker (season 1, episode 7)
Continuity: When Marshall comes out of his room with the book about the Roswell Incident, he's holding the cover and first pages bent under the book, next shot he's just holding them normally, then they're bent again.
Continuity: In the opening scene at the bar, when Ted and Barney are discussing the idea of going to visit a matchmaker, Ted's beer glass suddenly goes from being about a quarter full, to being nearly three-quarters full.
Continuity: In the final scene at the matchmaker's office, the tub of Haagen Daaz on the desk turns around between shots. Sometimes the brand name is visible, but in other shots the logo is facing away from the camera.
Continuity: When Ellen takes the clipboards, she first holds one in each hand, then the shot changes and both are in one hand.
Continuity: At the matchmaker's office, when Barney is saying he just wants someone to hold, Ellen is seen putting her pencil down on the desk but in the next shot it is in her hand again.
The Duel (season 1, episode 8)
Continuity: At the Sci-Fi themed restaurant, the straw in Robin's date's drink keeps changing position between shots. Sometimes it points straight up from the glass, other times it is angled towards her date leaning against the side of the glass.
Continuity: When Ted, Lily and Marshall are discussing the coffee maker, Marshall changes between shots from having a mug of coffee in one hand and a pen in the other, to having both hands around the mug.
Continuity: When Lucy is sitting on the bed in hospital, the straps on her vest keep changing position on her shoulder without her adjusting them.
Continuity: When Barney, Robin and Ted are at the bar, the blue stirrer in Robin's drink keeps changing position between shots without being touched.
Belly Full of Turkey (season 1, episode 9)
Continuity: When Lily and Marshall are talking in the kitchen, we see Lily put down the recipe card to the left of the jar of mayonnaise. The shot changes and the card is now to the right of the jar.
Continuity: In the opening scene at the apartment, the mug that Ted is holding keeps changing positions in his lap between shots. Sometimes it is tucked behind the leg nearest the camera, whilst in other shots it is sat on top of that leg.
Continuity: When Lily drops the potato chips on top of the 'salad', we can see a few chips sticking up beyond the top of the bowl. The shot changes and now the chips are laid flat, with none sticking up over the top.
Continuity: When Marshall and Lily are talking in the jail cell they are holding hands, then the shot changes and both have their hands in their laps.
Continuity: When Lily is making the layered salad, in some shots the layers are defined, but in others there is much more mayonnaise running between the layers.
The Wedding (season 1, episode 12)
Continuity: In the first scene at the bar, as Ted heads off to speak to Robin, Marshall's beer goes from at his mouth to on the table instantly between shots.
Drumroll, Please (season 1, episode 13)
Continuity: When Ted and Victoria are first talking, the straps on her dress keeping changing position between shots. Sometimes they are starting to slip off her shoulders, sometimes they sit straight, without her every adjusting the dress.
Continuity: The morning after the wedding, when Lily is talking about throwing the bouquet, the mug in Marshall's hand changes position, vanishes and then reappears instantly between shots.
Continuity: When Lily and Robin are talking at the apartment, Lily's necklace keeps moving from on top of her jacket to hanging straight down over her dress.

Continuity: In episode 1 "The Pilot", when the gang are drinking champagne at the bar with Ranjit the cab driver, there is a tray on the table when they toast. In this episode the same scene is shown in flashback, and there is no tray.

Continuity: When the girls are in the wedding dress shop, the bottle of champagne shifts from the table to the floor between shots.

Continuity: At the karaoke bar, just before Lily storms off, the song book changes position on the table between shots.
Continuity: When Lily and Marshall are talking at the apartment, just after Marshall gets off the phone to his friend from work, Lily's necklace changes position between shots. Sometimes it hangs straight down and sometimes it is to one side.

Continuity: When Ted and Marshall are watching Sandy Rivers read the paper on TV, the items besides the TV on the TV table switch according to the angle.
Continuity: When the guys are at the bar before going to the awards show, we see Marshall raise his beer to his mouth twice from different angles, without ever lowering it. Also, the amount of beer in his glass changes instantly between the shots.
Best Prom Ever (season 1, episode 20)
Continuity: When Lily and Marshall are discussing which band to book for their wedding, the way Lily's shirt hangs changes frequently between shots. Sometimes the shirt hangs straight, in other shots it is folded back on itself.
Milk (season 1, episode 21)
Continuity: When Ted is at the bar and is talking on the phone to Lily, his phone switches from his left to his right ear between shots.
Continuity: When Ted and Lily are at the side of the road after Ted has changed the tyre, Lily's necklace moves between shots. Sometimes it sits tight around her neck, whilst in other shots it hangs much lower.

Continuity: Just before Lily and Marshall pause their fight to go to dinner, the beer bottle in Marshall's hand vanishes between shots.

Continuity: During the scene in "Marshall and Lily's part", after they leave the bathroom, we can see Robin and Virginia (Ted's Mom) talking in the back. Their hand motions do not match the later scene of the "Robin and Ted's part". Obviously, they were shot separately.
Ted Mosby: Architect (season 2, episode 4)
Continuity: When Robin and Lily are talking in the apartment of Barney's date, Lily's hand moves instantly between shots from resting on her shoulder, to resting on the handbag by her side.
World's Greatest Couple (season 2, episode 5)
Plot hole: Ted and Robin are surprised by the size and layout of Lily's new apartment, despite having seen the apartment with her when she was house hunting in episode 2 of this season's "The Scorpion and the Toad".
Aldrin Justice (season 2, episode 6)
Continuity: When the gang are drinking a toast to Ted at the end of the episode, Robin's glass of champagne moves from her left to her right hand instantly when the camera angle changes.
Continuity: When Lily, Ted and Robin are at the bar discussing Ted's building design, Lily's drink keeps moving between shots. Sometimes it is in her hand lifted towards her mouth, whilst in other shots it sits on the table.
Continuity: When Barney is in the Professor's office, we see the professor put a red pen down on her desk and her hands are then empty. In the next shot, she suddenly has a blue pen in her hand.
Swarley (season 2, episode 7)
Audio problem: Lily starts chasing Chloe down the street. She hits a pipe. If you listen closely, you'll hear that she groans before the metallic hit sound effect.
Continuity: After Ted's date Janine smashes the car windshield, the glass is undamaged in the next shot.
Atlantic City (season 2, episode 8)
Continuity: At the courthouse, when Lily is eating red licorice from the vending machine, the piece she is eating gets longer between shots.
Continuity: When Marshall and Lily approach the reception desk at the wedding chapel, Marshall's cocktail moves from his right to his left hand instantly between shots.
Continuity: At the courthouse, we see Marshall, Lily and Barney walk around the corner towards the bench twice, from two different angles.
Slap Bet (season 2, episode 9)
Continuity: At the apartment, when Barney slaps Marshall he knocks over a chair. In the next shot, the chair is upright again, though nobody has picked it up.
Single Stamina (season 2, episode 10)
Continuity: At the apartment when Marshall gives Lily the red cocktail, the green paper umbrella moves from facing away from Lily to facing towards her between shots.
How Lily Stole Christmas (season 2, episode 11)
Continuity: When Ted, Robin and Barney are having a meal at the bar, we see Robin lift her drink to her mouth, then the shot changes to another angle and we see her lift the drink again.
Continuity: When Marshall and Ted are on the phone to one another, the string from his hoodie changes position between shots. It goes back and forth from being caught on the collar of his jacket to hanging straight down over his jacket.
Continuity: When Ted, Robin and Barney are at the bar, discussing the fact that Barney is ill, the level of the drink in Robin's glass goes up and down between shots.
First Time In New York (season 2, episode 12)
Continuity: When Robin is talking to her sister Katie in the Empire State Building lobby, Katie's bag moves between shots. Sometimes she wears it with the strap hanging straight down from her shoulder, in other shots the strap goes across her chest like a messenger bag.
Monday Night Football (season 2, episode 14)
Continuity: When the gang are about to watch the Super Bowl, Marshall is holding a chicken wing which vanishes from his hand when the camera angle changes.
Continuity: In the classroom, Marshall squirts juice on to the boy's clothes then puts the juice pouch flat on the table. In the next shot, the pouch is standing upright.
Arrivederci, Fiero (season 2, episode 17)
Continuity: In this episode we learn that Barney doesn't know how to drive. But throughout the whole series there are reference that he actually does, such as: In 'Come On' (22th episode 1st season): Penelope says to Barney: "We had sex twice in your car." In 'Moving Day' (18th episode 2nd season): Barney drives away with Ted's rental van. In 'The Bracket' (14th episode 3rd season): Barney stole Holly's SUV as they were camping.
Moving Day (season 2, episode 18)
Continuity: In the final scene when Barney is reading his top ten list, the piece of paper moves from his left to right hand and back in an instant between shots,.
Bachelor Party (season 2, episode 19)
Continuity: When Lily's mother is looking at the gift Lily has just opened, the blue bow on the gift vanishes and then reappears between shots.
Continuity: In the car, just after Barney discovers they are not headed for Atlantic City, the DVD screen that has been hanging down from the car roof is suddenly stowed away between shots.
Showdown (season 2, episode 20)
Continuity: When Ted is giving his best man's toast, the level of champagne in Marshall's glass goes up and down between shots.
Wait For It... (season 3, episode 1)
Continuity: When Ted, Barney and their dates are in the tub, Barney is holding a bottle. He takes a sip (i.e. no cap) and hands it to Amy (Ted's date). Now it has a cap. She hands it to Ted who unscrews it and has a drink.
We're Not From Here (season 3, episode 2)
Continuity: When Ted, Barney and the girls are heading to the South Bronx in the cab, keep watching Colleen's head, near when Barney says, "Somebody's been watching too many Seinfeld reruns", her head moves instantly between shots, from looking towards Ted to looking at Barney.
How I Met Everyone Else (season 3, episode 5)
Continuity: In this episode we get to see when Ted met Marshall. But in Season 2, episode 1 Ted says to Marshall, "And there was my roommate, lying on the bed with his feet up on the wall. He had headphones on, big smile on his face. That guy was you." In this episode we get to see it was different.
Factual error: When Ted is talking about what Marshall told him after he met Lilly, the two boys are playing with Playstation 2 controllers. The scene takes place in 1996, and Playstation 2 didn't come out until 2000.
Slapsgiving (season 3, episode 9)
Continuity: Marshall turns on the computer, and a readout pops up clearly displaying 2h 45m left on the countdown. He then says "look at that - that means we're in the final hour left of the countdown".
Continuity: When future Ted is counting the times Marshall slapped Barney, the first one is shown as the one at the bar, but this was before Barney decided 5 for eternity. The one that counts as the first is the one he gets after they watch Robin Sparkles' Video.
The Yips (season 3, episode 10)
Continuity: As Molly stands up you can notice she's already wearing pants, but then, she stands up and starts wearing them.
Continuity: In this episode we get to see when Barney lost his virginity to Rhonda, The Man Maker. They had sex in her bed. But in season 2 (12th episode, First Time in New York), Barney says that his comforter smelled like menthol for a week.
The Platinum Rule (season 3, episode 11)
Continuity: Barney blocks Ted's path by standing in front of the door. Watch his position as he says, "Ted, don't do this" for the second time, he has his right arm over his head. When the camera changes angles he has it down.
No Tomorrow (season 3, episode 12)
Continuity: Towards the end, when Ted says, "You just yelled at me", look at Marshall. He's about to take a sip of his drink, but when the camera cuts to a different angle, the mug's nowhere near his lips anymore.
Continuity: Towards the end, when Marshall's yelling at Ted, Ted says, "You yelled at me". When the camera angle changes, Marshall's hand changes position.
The Chain Of Screaming (season 3, episode 15)
Continuity: The ice cream Robin's eating in Ted's car keeps changing shapes between shots.
Audio problem: At the very beginning, after Ted says, "A new car", Lily's lips move, but she doesn't say anything. Obviously her dialogue was cut in post-production.
Continuity: When they're all sitting in the car listening to Marshall's story, Robin's ice cream changes between shots.
Rebound Bro (season 3, episode 18)
Audio problem: When Stella comes to apologize, Ted says, "This is awkward, I have a girl here." Stella hits him and they kiss. Although they only kiss twice, you can hear three kisses. During the last one, their lips are not even touching.
Everything Must Go (season 3, episode 19)
Continuity: When Barney and Abby are lying in bed after the Local Art Cafe scene, Abby's arms/hands change positions between shots.
Continuity: When Robin buys Lily's "favorite dress", Lily holds it on her lap folded, when the camera changes angles it is unfolded.
Miracles (season 3, episode 20)
Continuity: When Ted gets in the taxi, the code on the taxi is 6Z28. Then, it changes to 9Z72 right before the accident. Then back to 6Z28 right before it gets hit. To top that, the cab Barney wants to take to the hospital is also code 9Z72.
Intervention (season 4, episode 4)
Continuity: In this episode, both Ted and Marshall mention that Lucy, Stella's daughter, is 7 years old, when in the previous season (13th episode of 3rd season, Ten Sessions) Stella states: "I have a daughter. Her name is Lucy, she's 8." Did she grow younger?
Three Days Of Snow (season 4, episode 13)
Factual error: A shot zooms out to show a powerful storm system just offshore from the eastern seaboard. However, the cyclonic storm system is rotating clockwise, while low pressure systems in the Northern Hemisphere rotate counterclockwise.
The Possimpible (season 4, episode 14)
Continuity: During the scene back in college, when Marshall and Lily are listening to Dr. X's show, at the first shot of the radio, you can see some popcorn there already, although Marshall has not thrown any, yet. Even if you claim he's been throwing constantly, a few shots later they vanish, and reappear.
The Stinsons (season 4, episode 15)
Continuity: In this episode they call Barney's mom "Loretta", but in the 10th episode of the 3rd season, "The Yips", Rhonda "Man-Maker" French calls her Patty.
