A large part of Nick's plotline revolves around the discovery that the couple's stolen ring has a fake diamond switched out for the real one. But the ring was left as collateral for a very expensive necklace for the woman to wear that night. There is no way that a jewelery store would accept a ring for collateral without appraising the ring's/stone's value first. And in that inspection, they would have discovered the switch and not accepted it. See more...

For those who don't (or can't) read American Sign Language, at the end of the episode, Grissom says to Dr. Gilbet is that his mother lost her hearing when she was eight years old. He once asked her what is it like to be deaf, and she told Grissom (who loved to swim) that it was like being underwater. She also taught him that being deaf does not make one inferior to others. Dr. Gilbert then replies that she teaches her students the same lesson.
Ellie (series 2)
Anthony Zuiker, the show's creator, makes a cameo appearance at the very beginning of this episode; as the clerk who turns away the couple with the fake casino chips.
Last Laugh (series 3)
Series creator Anthony Zuiker has a cameo appearance as a heckler in the episode's final scene.

When Katherine and Sara find the girl's body in the chimney, Sara references a conversation they had earlier. But instead she calls the Poe story "The Tale Tell Heart."
