Season: Whole show  1  2  3  4  5  All

Across whole show

Entry In the opening credits there is a shot of a girl standing alone on the corner of a street. This was taken from the Buffy episode "Anne", when Buffy was staying in Los Angeles.
Entry Angel's human name was Liam. "Liam" is an Irish form of "William", so basically, Angel and Spike have the same name.
Entry About 7 seconds into the opening theme you see the face of a young man looking up (Just before you see Angel with the sword) That young man is Phantom Dennis. He is only seen once in episode 5 of the 1st season- Room with an Vu. After that he's an unseen "character" until season 4.
Entry Angel's headquarters in season 2-4 was in the Hyperion Hotel. Hyperion is another name of Helios (the god of Sun in Greek mythology), and means "the one who goes above".
Entry Angel and Lindsey McDonald were the only characters who appeared in both the series premiere and series finale. Harmony Kendall was the only character from the finale who also appeared in the unaired "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" pilot.
Entry By the series finale, Angel lost and regained his soul a total of three times: (1) in flashbacks to when he was sired and cursed, (2) after he slept with Buffy on her 17th birthday and re-ensouled by Willow, and (3) when Angel Investigations battled The Beast in season four (again re-ensouled by Willow). And while he didn't lose his soul in the episode "Eternity," he did briefly turn into Angelus; he also pretended to become Angelus in the Buffy episode "Enemies."

Lonely Hearts (series 1)

Entry In this episode, Cordelia makes a reference to "self-destructing tapes and a dossier". This is a reference to the 1966 TV series Mission Impossible, which featured self-destructing tapes used to send the main character on his assignment. An interesting fact is that Mission Impossible regulars Martin Landau and Barbara Bain are the real life parents of Juliet Landau, who played Angel's former love Drusilla during season 2 of Buffy.

City Of (series 1)

Entry At the end of the episode, when Doyle asks "What happened to Russell?", Angel says "He went into the light". Anne Rice used this line quite a lot in her books about vampires.

There's No Place Like Plrtz Glrb (series 2)

Entry Lorne's brother Numfar, who performs the "dance of shame," is played by Joss Whedon. Apparently, this fact was so secret, only a handful of people knew about it beforehand.

Dead End (series 2)

Entry Joss Whedon hints at future events in season 4 during Lindsay's song in "Dead End." It hints about the coming of Jasmine: "The sky's gonna open, People gonna pray and crawl, Gonna rain down fire, Gonna burn us all," and "Pretty as a picture, She is like a golden dream." All references to Jasmine.

Disharmony (series 2)

Entry While it is mentioned numerous times, the shots of Willow in her dorm (on the phone with Cordelia talking about Harmony) mark the only appearance of Sunnydale on the show.

Blood Money (series 2)

Entry When the Special Guest TV Stars come out and "rob" guests of their donations at the ball, one of the starring ladies is asked "What's the deal with making your character a lesbian? Is it for ratings?" A little jab at Willow's coming out on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"

Redefinition (series 2)

Entry Except for voice-overs, Angel's role is entirely silent.

The Trial (series 2)

Entry This episode marked the first mention of Daniel Holtz, Angelus' nemesis from the 18th century. Holtz later made his first on screen appearance in "Heartthrob."

The Shroud Of Rahmon (series 2)

Entry Cordelia and Wesley realize that the robbery is happening that night because the door latch is taped down - exactly the same way the guards at the Watergate Hotel realized a robbery was in progress in 1974, which led to President's Nixon's resignation.

Untouched (series 2)

Entry In the episode 'Untouched' Angel asks Cordelia 'Do you have any idea how hard it is to think when you've got a rebar through you?', her reply of 'Actually, I do. Benefits of a Sunnydale education' is a reference to the BTVS episode 'Lover's Walk', in which Cordy falls through a staircase and is impaled on a rebar.

Are You Now Or Have You Ever Been (series 2)

Entry When Angel is outside the observatory, he is dressed in the same clothes that James Dean wore in Rebel Without a Cause (a film where there are significant scenes at the same observatory), and Judy has a bit of the Natalie Woods about her too. They are also both set in the 50s.

Waiting In The Wings (series 3)

Entry The prima ballerina is played by Summer Glau, who also appeared on "Firefly". In addition to acting, Glau is a classically trained ballerina.

Dad (series 3)

Entry Holtz is watching two people fight in a graveyard - the graveyard's blatantly the same one as used in Buffy. Doesn't really qualify as a mistake, because arguably many graveyards look alike, but fans of both series will be able to recognise it.

Fredless (series 3)

Entry Fred's Mum says that her Dad enjoys films like Alien, except for the last one, during which he fell asleep. Joss Whedon wrote the original screenplay for Alien Resurrection but it didn't turn out in any way, shape, or form how he envisioned:he now claims he wants to tour the country lecturing on how not to make films using only this film as an example.

Carpe Noctem (series 3)

Entry The episode title is a play-on-words of the Latin phrase "Carpe diem," which means "Seize the day." "Carpe noctem" literally means "Seize the night."

Heartthrob (series 3)

Entry When James and Elisabeth are expressing their love for each other, Angelus comments "give it a century". This is the same thing The Master said about Angelus and Darla's relationship.

All of series 3 (series 3)

Entry By season's end, Darla has died four times: (1) in flashbacks to when she was sired by The Master, (2) when Angel dusted her in the Buffy episode "Angel", (3) when she was re-sired by Drusilla, and (4) when she dusted herself so that Connor could be born.

Home (series 4)

Entry This was Charisma Carpenter's last appearance as a series regular. Her final appearance in season five is as a guest star.

Inside Out (series 4)

Entry Skip's line in 'Inside Out' - 'Nobody comes back from paradise. Well, maybe a Slayer once,' is a reference to BTVS, and Buffy being brought back from heaven in the episode 'Bargaining'.

Orpheus (series 4)

Entry In the episode "Orpheus," the actor who played the armed robber that shoots the cashier in the diner is played by Nate Dushku. He's the older brother of Eliza Dushku who also appears in the episode as Faith.
Entry At the end of the episode, Cordelia reveals to Angel and co. that she is pregnant. Charisma Carpenter actually was pregnant at the time, and had been since Cordy's reappearance in "Slouching Towards Bethlehem".

Soulless (series 4)

Entry When Angelus taunts Connor about trying to kill him and then sleeping with Cordelia, he comments, "Screwing your mom and trying to kill your dad? There should be a play." This refers to the Greek tragedy "Oedipus," in which the eponymous character marries his mother after killing his father.

Long Day's Journey (series 4)

Entry When the gang's memories are reversed back to the age of 17, Cordelia says "Hello, salty goodness" upon seeing Angel. She said the same thing upon seeing him for the first time in the Buffy episode "Never Kill a Boy on the First Date."

Spin The Bottle (series 4)

Entry This was the only episode in which Angel was seen, in the present day, using his given name "Liam."
Entry Wesley duct-taping Lorne to a pouf in the hotel lobby was Amy Acker's idea.

Supersymmetry (series 4)

Entry To illustrate where her speech is placed on the itinerary, Fred mentions Nomar Garciappara and Sammy Sosa, who both played with the Chicago Cubs; Garciappara wouldn't join that team until well after the episode aired. Since nobody could have known what would happen two years in the future, it's not a mistake; but as a Cubs fan, I find it an interesting choice of comparison.

All of series 4 (series 4)

Entry During the season's Angelus arc, a lot of David Boreanaz's dialogue was improvised.

Not Fade Away (series 5)

Entry The famous "Wilhelm scream" makes an appearance - the first demon Lindsey cuts up cries it out.
Entry When the gang are in Spike's apartment where Angel is assigning them to go after members of the Circle of the Black Thorn, Spike says "First off, I'm not wearing any amulets. No bracelets, broaches, beads, pendants, pins, or rings. " This is a reference to how Spike dies in the series finale of Buffy by wearing an amulet to destroy the Hellmouth.
Entry Angel's plan to kill the ranking members of the Circle of the Black Thorn bears a striking similarity to the mass murders ordered by Michael Corleone in the climax of The Godfather and its sequels.

Origin (series 5)

Entry In episode 18 of season 5 after Connor kills the demon he tells Angel that he doesn't like people touching his neck. This is a reference to getting his throat cut by Angel in episode 22 of season 4. No one knows that Connor just got his memories back.

Underneath (series 5)

Entry In the episode "Underneath", Illyria is talking about different dimensions she has visited and she says "And one world with nothing but shrimp...I tired of that one quickly." This is a reference to Buffy episode "Superstar": when Anya is explaining that there are many types of alternate realities, she says, "And there could even be a world with nothing but shrimp."

Shells (series 5)

Entry When the gang is trying to figure out how Illyria got by them, Gunn says "Yeah, like she was pulling a Barry Allen. Jay Garrick? Wally... Like she was moving really fast." No one knew who he was talking about. All three name are different incarnations of The Flash.

A Hole in the World (series 5)

Entry Concerning Fred's line "Handsome man saves me from the monsters" She said this as well in Pylea. Those are the first and last words she ever says to Angel.

Smile Time (series 5)

Entry Gregor Framkin, the creator of the "Smile Time" show-within-a-show, is played by executive producer David Fury.

Why We Fight (series 5)

Entry Sam Lawson was the only vampire Angel sired after he was ensouled. As pointed out in the episode, he only did so in order to save the submarine, not for personal pleasure.

You're Welcome (series 5)

Entry David Boreanaz was suffering knee problems during production. To keep him off his feet, a lot of his scenes were shot with him sitting down.

Lineage (series 5)

Entry In one scene, Wesley's father mentions the destruction of the Watcher's Council building, which happened in the Buffy episode "Never Leave Me."
Entry In one scene, Spike comments "Sex with robots is more common than most people think." This refers to the Buffybot Spike had commissioned in Buffy's fifth season.

Hell Bound (series 5)

Entry Angel leaves the Reaper locked in a metal cage as the camera pans slowly back so we can only see his eyes - almost exactly the same shot as when Connor left Angel trapped in the metal coffin at the end of "Tomorrow". They even say the same thing - "You get to live. Forever". Like father, like son.

Conviction (1) (series 5)

Entry With this episode, David Boreanaz is the only remaining original cast member from season one. Glenn Quinn's character died in episode 9 (He died in real life 3 years later) , Charisma Carpenter was written out of the show at the end of season four, while Alexis Denisof and J. August Richards began as guest stars; Amy Acker and Andy Hallett weren't introduced until season two, and Vincent Kartheiser first appeared in season three.

All of series 5 (series 5)

Entry Joss Whedon wanted Sarah Michelle Gellar to guest star as Buffy in "You're Welcome" (the show's 100th episode) and "Power Play" (the penultimate episode), but she was unavailable. She later became available for the series finale, but Whedon declined, wanting the series to end focused on Angel. Conversely, David Boreanaz was available for the Buffy finale, but only for a limited amount of time.
Entry Because they were both friends with Glenn Quinn, David Boreanaz and Christian Kane were uncomfortable filming the Lindsey-posing-as-Doyle arc.
