Trivia

During this scene, Dawson's parents give him a watch with an inscription for his graduation present. The inscription reads "If you will it, it is no dream" or something similar. Alan Cross, who wrote this scene, explains during the commentary that he originally intended to use a line from a Beatle's song "All You Need Is Love" for the inscription. But the show felt that although that would be appropriate for his parent's generation, they needed something more profound. So Alan bought a book of quotes, looked through them and finally ended up improvising the aired version of the inscription. See more...

Rock Bottom (season 6, episode 13)

Plot hole: The episode starts with Joey frantically trying to get to class, and printing out a paper she obviously has to turn in for that class. But then Eddie suddenly shows up at her door, and after hearing from Audrey's Mom, Joey suddenly decides to ditch school for a few days to drive across Country to LA. This doesn't sound like something the studious Joey would do, especially with her Scholarship in jeapordy from her failing grade on the midterm. Why would she take a few days off from school, in the middle of the week with classes and further jeopardize her academic standing at a very expensive University? It wasn't Spring Break yet either, that comes in a later episode. Even though Joey would have to fly back from LA, it would still take them at least 2 or 3 days to drive from Boston to LA. Would Joey really just take off like that and ditch all her academic responsibilities considering how serious she is about her education? Doesn't seem reasonable for her character.

Continuity: At the end, Pacey carries Joey upstairs and lays her on his bed because she is drunk. In one shot of Joey, her hands are up by her face but the right shoulder of her sweater is slipped off her shoulder, revealing the strap of her shirt underneath. The next shot of Joey, her left hand is still up and her right hand is down, but the right shoulder of her sweater is back up in place. It was too fast for her to fix the sweater herself, and her left hand hasn't moved.

Continuity: When Joey and Pacey are sitting on the bed talking during the party, there is a shot where Joey is looking to her right, directly at Pacey. The next shot of her, she is suddenly looking down and completely away from Pacey. The transition is too fast to be realistic.

Audio problem: At the end of the episode when Pacey and Joey are paying for their items, Pacey launches into a philosophical speech. The cashier has asked him whether 'they found everything they were looking for' and he answers no, but they found what they needed, which was even more important. He then elaborates, explaining that 'if you found everything you needed that day, what would be the point of doing it all over again the next day'. But Joshua Jackson apparently messed up his dialogue, because the point he was making was that they didn't find everything they were looking for, not what they needed. He was making the point that they did find everything they needed, so it would be contradictory to then explain that there was no point in finding everything you need. He meant to say 'if you found everything you wanted (versus needed), what would be the point of doing it all over again the next day'. Oops.

Plot hole: When Pacey and Joey get locked in the Big K-Mart, they run to the front doors and start banging on them and yelling at the guard. The guard, who is in the parking lot turns back towards his car and faces directly towards Joey and Pacey in the front windows. They aren't that far from the guard's car, and he was looking directly towards them. There is no way the guard would not have noticed two full-grown adults standing in the front glass doors pounding their hands on the glass and yelling at him.

Revealing: When Joey and Pacey are playing Battleship, there are a few close-ups showing their game screens. Although you can see several push-pins in each screen, signifying the areas of the game they have tried; there are no actual ships visible. It looks like they are playing the game with only the push-pins, and not any actual battleships.

Plot hole: When Pacey and Joey are in the break room, waiting for the police to call them back, they start arguing. The phone suddenly rings, and Joey asks Pacey not to answer it in order to finish their conversation. But this doesn't make logical sense; considering their desperate circumstances (being locked in the store all night) and how hard they tried to get hold of law enforcement to help them get out, there is no way Joey would not want to answer such a critical phone call. It may have been their only chance to communicate with help.

Continuity: At the beginning, Pacey and Joey are dining at a large table while Pacey is flirting with the woman on his right. Joey goes underneath the table to retrieve her shoe, and sees what is apparently the woman's left hand on Pacey's knee. But the very next shot of the woman above the table shows her right hand up against her face, and her left arm folded, hand on the table. Her left arm doesn't appear to have moved, and there was no time for a transition from Pacey's knee to above the table.

Revealing: In the very beginning of the episode, Pacey is watching TV and gets up to look out the window towards Hell's Kitchen. As he moves back from the window, he accidently bumps the kitchen counter/cabinets. An entire section of 'counter/cabinet' moves noticeably; revealing it to be a cheap, flimsily-built fake kitchen counter/cabinet instead of a more substantial, real one. This was obviously just part of a set.

Continuity: When Joey and Pacey are arguing in his office, there is a close-up of Joey with noticable hair strands hanging off both sides of her face. The next shot of her, the hair strand on the left side of her face is suddenly gone, and her hair is tucked behind the ear on that side. This entire time Joey has been leaning forward on Pacey's desk, her arms supporting her. The next shot of her, the hair strand on the right side of her face is gone. But the next shot, both hair strands are magically back.

Revealing: When Joey hands the reporter the cup of coffee in Pacey's office, you can tell the cup is empty. It tilts to one side, and is behaving as if very light without any fluid in it. Joey pretends to pour cream into the cup, implying there is already coffee inside. But the way the cup tilts in the reporter's hand, it's obvious it's actually empty.

Continuity: When Pacey and Joey suddenly start kissing in Pacey's office, Joey's hair is still tied up on top of her head. They turn and fall on the couch, and Joey's hair is suddenly completely loose and long beneath her. At no point during this transition did anyone touch or undo her hair.

Plot hole: At the end of the episode, Joey takes a taxi from Boston to Eddie's house in Worcestor. As she walks up to the front door, the cab leaves. Eddie has no idea Joey is coming, and she has no way to return to Boston without using a cab or asking Eddie for a ride. But she doesn't even know yet if Eddie is home, and whether he would offer to drive her home. Seems illogical for Joey to dismiss the cab without asking the cab driver to wait a few moments while she sees if Eddie is home, and if he would be willing to drive her back to Boston. Otherwise, she would have to ask his parents to use the phone to call another cab.

Continuity: When Jen is talking to Grams and pours herself a glass of juice the fridge behind her is open. The camera cuts to Grams for a few seconds and when it cuts back the fridge is closed and the jug of juice has disappeared. While the camera does go off Jen for a few seconds, it was nowhere near long enough to put the juice back in the fridge and close it, then run back to where she was standing. Plus, there's no sound of the fridge door closing.

Audio problem: When Jen is hosting the LoveLines event, she tells CJ that he is supposed to field the calls and not ask questions. But she appears to fumble her dialogue, and actually says, "You field, they ask, field, ask, field, ask," etc. She inadvertently gets it backwards, because in reality the question would come first and then CJ would field the question to the rest of the show.

Revealing: Towards the end of this episode, Joey comes back to her Dorm room and spots the envelope Eddie left for her. You can see her name written on the outside of the envelope, and it's supposed to be Eddie's handwriting. But in fact, it looks exactly like Joey's handwriting as shown throughout the series. When Joey is talking earlier to Professor Hetson and he hands her the exam booklet with her writing on the front, it's the same style of handwriting. During other episodes, we see what is supposed to be Joey's own writing (ie: her note to Dawson during the Series Finale that she leaves on his bed) which is also very similar. So in fact, what is supposed to be Eddie's handwriting on the note to Joey really looks more like Joey's handwriting, or the same person who really does the writing for Joey's character.

Continuity: When Joey is talking to Eddie in her dorm room, she is facing him with her hands resting firmly on his shoulders. In one close-up of Joey, her hair is hanging in front of her right ear. In the next shot of her, the hair on her right side is suddenly tucked behind her ear. Her hands haven't moved, and no-one touched her hair.

Audio problem: When Jen is talking to Jack at the Helpline Office, she jokingly tells him that he is too young to be likely to "haunt them with your sad, single self." She appears to fumble her dialogue, however, and you can hear her almost switch the words around and say "single, sad self." She catches herself, and says 'sad' first instead.

Revealing: When Pacey and Rich are physically fighting in the office, there is a quick shot of a person who is supposed to be Pacey leaning forward over Rich and hitting him. However, if you look closely you can see that the hair on this person although dark brown, appears much longer and curlier than Pacey's current hairstyle. Also-just before that shot ends, you can see the longer hair swing away from his neck loosely on the right side. The next shot of Pacey shows his shorter haircut, so I believe the longer hair was actually a stunt man substituting for Pacey in a risky, physical scene.

Plot hole: In the beginning of the episode, Joey and Audrey are talking in their dorm room. Audrey makes a comment that "Our time in this particular room is over". They have been in the same dorm room (27) for two years now, their Freshman and Sophomore years at Worthington. They still have 2 more years to go. What would make Audrey think that they would suddenly have to change dorm rooms when they've had the same room the entire time? Or that they wouldn't still be roommates the next academic year at Worthington? Audrey is staying to take Summer School classes so she doesn't have to leave the University.
