Deliberate "mistake": In the first few series, it is suggested Lister and Kochanski barely know each other. In 'Balance of Power' Holly says that Lister has only ever spoken 173 words to her. However, by series 4 Kochanski is referred to as Lister's ex-girlfriend with whom he shared a relationship. In the series 4 documentary, Doug Naylor explains that Lister's attitude towards Kochanski was imature in the first series which is why they changed his back story from wanting to be with Kochanski to actually having been with her by series 4.

The chairs, tables, props, costumes and character placements are all completely discontinuous.
Continuity: When Lister and Rimmer see Cat just after Holly explains how he evolved, Rimmer runs at Cat screaming before he passes through him and we hear a crash off screen to indicate Rimmer has just run in to something. Revealing: When Holly shows the crew the Holly Hop Drive, you can see the outline of his black clothes throughout the scene.
Continuity: When Lister and Rimmer talk to Holly at the disco, Lister's arm is on the table. When the camera angle changes, it is on his lap below the table.
Revealing: During the last scene of the episode, the Cat keeps brushing against Rimmer's hologramatic shirt.
All of series 3 (season 3)
Plot hole: Starbug 1 is abandoned on backwards Earth. But it still appears twice more in this series.
Backwards (season 3, episode 1)
Plot hole: In the episode 'Backwards' most of the things that happen on 'Backwards Earth' are correct, except, of course, in reverse. But there is an exception: in the scene in the Cafe, when the waitress comes to 'dirty' the table, she tips a box of trash on the table. If you play this scene backwards, the trash leaps from the table into the box. Even on a 'backwards earth' I can't believe that trash spontaneously leaps about...
Continuity: At the start of "Backwards", there is a spoof "Star Wars" type caption, which spools up the screen very quickly. Too quickly to be read in fact...which may explain why few people have noticed that the last line of the caption "And now the Story Continuums..." is written TWICE
Continuity: When Kryten is doing his driving test, as soon as we see Rimmer & Kryten in the cockpit you can see the wire attached to Chris Barrie behind him, next to the aerial on his hat, going vertically out the top of the frame. When it comes to the actual ejector seat gag, put it in frame-advance and you will clearly see the wire again for a couple of frames. You can tell it's not the aerial because Chris is looking up at the time meaning the aerial on his hat would now br horizontal (and hidden by his head).
Visible crew/equipment: After leaving Starbug, the Cat says, "What's the matter?" There is a boom mic visible at the top right of the screen. (This may not be visible on some TVs).
Visible crew/equipment: When Kryten and Rimmer find the Nodnol sign, a large boom mic can be seen above their heads.
Revealing: Lister mouths the Cat's line, "Your gajungas will suddenly rise back into your body, and the next thing you know you're singing soprano in the school choir."
Revealing: At the end of the episode, the shot with the taxi has been reversed to show the number plate backwards. It has also changed everything else in the shot, most notably, the cat's outfit. In the next scene they have been flipped back to normal.
Plot hole: If everything goes backwards, shouldn't Kryten and Rimmer have got fired, done their job and then got hired? Rimmer & Kryten discovered that everything was backwards in the cafe earlier in the episode. At the club they did their act and then got fired. Put this 'forwards' and it becomes wrong.
Visible crew/equipment: When Kryten ejects Rimmer from Starbug, the cable lifting him up can be seen above him.
Revealing: When Rimmer stands up from underneath the table, just before he says, "Thanks for your support" to Lister, listen very carefully and you can hear the stunt director saying "Action!" backwards. This shot was the splice point between the reversed and the regular footage. (I know this mistake is listed as being in the 'backwards version' on the DVD, but it is in the regular broadcast version too - you just have to listen harder for it.)
Continuity: In the forest, Lister and the Cat take a poster off a tree. They then show it to the man who gives them a lift. The poster is different to the one in the forest.
Revealing: During the fight, there is a man in a 'Flash Gordon' t-shirt with the logo forwards.
Continuity: At the end of the episode, when the Cat says, 'I've forgotten something', watch the extra in the white t-shirt. He puts a pint to his mouth, and when the shot changes, it is gone.
Revealing: Near the end of the episode, Kryten and his employer are seen arguing in supposedly backwards English. However, when you watch the episode how the people of earth would see it on the second DVD, Kryten and his employer aren't speaking English, they are just speaking plain gobbeldy-gook, even although when you see the people of Earth talking on the DVD they speak correctly.
Continuity: When Lister gets sucked through the window, one of the men that 'catches' him disappears when the camera changes.
Marooned (season 3, episode 2)
Revealing: When Lister burns Rimmer's money, you can see they are Italian Lire notes.
Continuity: When Lister puts the snapped guitar into the fire, the broken piece of the neck end is sticking out of the top. When Rimmer comes in, the neck of the guitar is now upside down.
Other: When the meteor hits Starbug, there are no stars outside the front of the ship at all.
Revealing: At the start in the cockpit of Starbug, the green screen behind Lister is visible instead of the painted starfield that should be there.
Visible crew/equipment: If you look closely when the camera follows Lister (in the scene just before the meteor crashes onto Starbug) you can actually see the edge of the set and some studio lights.
Revealing: When Lister cuts out the guitar from the trunk, the edges are black. When Lister snaps the guitar in two, you can see the wood is a different colour inside, meaning the edges of the cut out had been painted previously.
Polymorph (season 3, episode 3)
Plot hole: Right after the shrinking boxers scene, Kryten says the small boxers are missing from the bunk, but you can see them right in front of him.
Continuity: At the start of the episode, it is clear that the capsule fully rotates and the "contents: 2" sign is not on the capsule.
Continuity: At the start of the episode when we first see the polymorph, it looks into the mirror, then covers its eyes. Yet when we see the reflection, it already has its hands over its eyes before it gets to the mirror.
Continuity: Kryten removes the polymorph underpants and throws them under the covers of Lister's bed. When he checks the bed and pulls out a snake the pants are now on top of the covers (even though he says they're gone) and the covers themselves are now arranged differently.
Continuity: At the end of the episode, the second Polymorph changes from Lister back to its original form. As this happens, the background changes completely.
Factual error: The polymorph goes through a metal pipe and a tap which bulges and becomes mis-shapen. The tap then changes back to its original shape, which is impossible.
Visible crew/equipment: When the bazookoid blasts hit the Polymorph near the end, you can see the stand that's holding the Polymorph at the bottom of the screen.
Audio problem: When Lister says "he was in sickbay for a week", once the shot changes we once again hear him say "for a week". Evidently, the line was intended to carry on into the next shot but wasn't edited out.
Revealing: The cardboard box that the Cat holds up to block the heat seeking missiles has two pre-cut holes in it. You can just barely see them as he takes the box from the shelf.
Continuity: When Lister is preparing the meal, he puts all the ingredients into the microwave and closes the door. When he opens it again, a plate has magically appeared inside the microwave.
Bodyswap (season 3, episode 4)
Revealing: When Kryten takes the syringe out of Lister's head, the needle doesn't come out of the syringe properly, so Kryten puts his hand in front of the needle to try and hide the mistake.
Continuity: When Lister (in Rimmer's body) pleads the Cat to lend him his body, he says 'how else can I pilot White Midget?'. In the next scene, the Blue Midget is being piloted, and White Midget was originally abandoned for Starbug. (this mistake was admitted by the crew)
Revealing: Starbug and Blue Midget wobble on a number of occasions during the chase.
Revealing: During the Scrabble game, Lister (in Rimmer's body) jumps out of his seat and you can hear the chair scrape across the floor. As Lister is a hologram, he should not have been able to move the chair.
Continuity: When Rimmer (in Lister's body) is looking at the magazine in the Jacuzzi, the magazine moves from water level to much higher in the next shot.
Continuity: One of Starbug's legs breaks off when it hits rocks on the moon but in the next shot, the leg has returned.
Continuity: Just before Lister gets the mind enema, he tells Rimmer to smeg off while looking to his right. When the camera changes angles he is looking down.
Continuity: The milkshake and toffee crisp come out of a different vending machine to where they were ordered.
Continuity: When Rimmer suggests the body swap, the magazine in Lister's hand vanishes.
Revealing: When the Cat drops the tape of Lister's mind into the cup, you can just make out Lister beginning to smile just as Kryten moves in front of him.
Continuity: From the model shot of Blue Midget, Kryten is seen sitting on the right. When the camera cuts inside the ship, he is sitting on the left.
Timeslides (season 3, episode 5)
Continuity: We are told that it is impossible to move outside the frame of a slide, yet when we are shown the slide of young Lister and his band, all we see is the band on stage but the crew move freely about the pub.
Continuity: Kryten needs to ask what a pub is, yet in the episode "Backwards" he and Rimmer worked in one for three weeks as the comedy act "The Sensational Reverse Brothers", and, later, were involved in a brawl in the same pub. Originally, the episodes were to be shown in a different order, which explains why the mistake occurs, but doesn't excuse it.
Continuity: In the pub, Lister gets a pint incredibly quickly after they arrive and has managed to drink half of it in a single camera cut.
Continuity: A blue fan appears on the golf course in the middle of the scene from nowhere.
Continuity: When Kryten first sees the photos, in one camera shot they are moving on the string. In the next shot they are perfectly still.
Continuity: When the slideshow starts, the photos in Lister's hands disappear between camera cuts.
Factual error: The Eagle on Hitler's briefcase is that of the (post war) Federal Republic of (West) Germany - not that of the Nazi German Third Reich.
Factual error: The assassination attempt on Hitler in 1944 was in Rastenburg, not Nuremberg as stated in this episode.
Revealing: When Lister is hit in the face with the snowball, some of the snow lands on Rimmer's hologramatic uniform.
Continuity: When Rimmer visits rich Lister, he apears from a point right next to him. But when he leaves, the point at which he disappears is much furthur back.
Revealing: When Rimmer dies at the end of the episode, a dummy is visible just before the explosion.
Continuity: When we see the photo of the skiers, there are no boxes in front of the screen. When the shot changes, two boxes have appeared which Rimmer and Lister use as steps.
Continuity: During the golf game, Lister's locks move between shots throughout the scene.
Audio problem: In the photo of 'Smeg and the Heads' you can see that the drummer frantically plays the cymbals, but no sound comes from them.
Continuity: When we see the skiers, no one is standing in front of the screen. In the next shot, Lister has appeared from nowhere.
The Last Day (season 3, episode 6)
Continuity: When Kryten packs his spare heads away, he places the first one in the case with his left hand. In the next shot it has moved to his right hand.
Continuity: When Kryten throws away the breakfast, Lister's locks move from behind his shoulder to in front of it in a single cut.
Revealing: You can tell Robert Llewellyn is reading his lines when Kryten receives the computer chip. He is looking much lower than the chip in his hand and it was obviously quite a complicated piece of dialogue to remember.
Continuity: When Kryten is packing his heads away at the point where he says 'how would the manufacturers sell their latest model?' he is looking forwards. The camera changes angles and he is looking down.
Continuity: Lister's hands change position between cuts when Kryten walks out in the opening scene.
Continuity: In this episode Kryten has no idea how to operate a bazookoid, yet earlier on in 'Polymorph' he was able to change the settings of one from standard to heat-seek and fire it without a problem.
Continuity: When Kryten takes the invitation from the skutter, he picks it up with his right hand. In the next shot it has jumped to his left hand.
Camille (season 4, episode 1)
Continuity: When Holly interrupts Kryten's date, Camille moves about a foot away from Kryten when the camera changes angles.
Continuity: When Kryten and Camille make a toast, Kryten puts the straw to his mouth. In the next shot it is gone.
Continuity: After Kryten tells Camille she must think he is as stupid as a photocopier, a shadow is covering her whole face. In the next shot light is shining on her eye.
Continuity: Just before Holly interrupts Kryten's date, the popcorn is sitting on his lap. In the next shot it is below Camille's eye.
Continuity: At the start of the episode, on a shelf in the sleeping quarters is one of Rimmer's Army De Nord figures, which were all burned in Marooned in series 3.
Continuity: When Kryten falls over the balcony, the next shot shows him holding onto the ledge, yet in the following shot he is holding onto a pole about a foot away from the ledge.
D.N.A. (season 4, episode 2)
Continuity: When Lister knocks over the can of beer, the ring pull is flat. When the can hits the floor, the ring pull is sticking out.
Revealing: Rimmer looks to have trapped his finger in something as he has a blackened fingernail. As he is a hologram this would be impossible.
Continuity: Lister's clothes disappear during the transmogrification process, then reappear when he changes back.
Continuity: In the scene where Lister is talking to human Kryten, just before Lister sees the photos, keep an eye on Lister's hat. It is perched on top of his head with about an inch of hair showing, yet the next shot shows the hat covering all of the hair, then it goes back to an inch of hair showing again. There is no time for Lister to have adjusted his hat between cuts. It is clear the line had to be re-shot.
Continuity: When Lister throws the can of lager at the curry monster, the can rotates in its mouth between cuts.
Continuity: When Kryten decides to be a mechanoid again, Lister gets up and grabs his jacket and swings it around his shoulders. The camera cuts to Kryten for a second then back to Lister, who now has his jacket on fully. The amount of time the camera was away from Lister would make this impossible for him to put the jacket on that quickly.
Visible crew/equipment: In the sleeping quarters just before the Cat sneezes onto the microscope, a boom mic shadow can be seen on the table in front of him. Also, just before as Lister walks behind Rimmer the shadow is visible moving past on Rimmer's hair.
Visible crew/equipment: When Lister says 'get me out of this thing' just after the Cat starts pressing buttons on the transmogrification machine, a boom mic can be seen above the Cat's head.
Continuity: Kryten has three spare heads but in 'The Last Day' in series 3, he only packed away one head.
Continuity: When Kryten is feeling his face, Lister walks in with a tray and looking straight forward. When the camera changes angles, Lister is looking up at Holly.
Revealing: The metal shelf the three spare heads sit on can be seen to move as spare head three speaks.
Continuity: When Rimmer taunts Lister as a chicken, the Cat is stood next to him facing the camera with no one else near him. In the next shot Kryten has appeared standing right in front of the Cat.
Continuity: When Kryten explains the transmogrification process, he turns to face Rimmer. In the next shot he turns to face Rimmer again.
Continuity: When Lister changes into the mini superhuman, he is holding the bazookoid up, but in the close up shots the gun is lowered.
Justice (season 4, episode 3)
Continuity: Near the end of the episode, after the simulant has strangled itself, it is lying flat on his back. When the Cat comes up behind it to attack it with a spade, the simulant is half sitting up. 26.20.
Continuity: When the simulant hits Lister over the head with the third pot, he uses both hands to smash it, yet in the next shot he is only using one.
Revealing: When the simulant pulls the knife out of his chest, you can see the knife is a dummy. As the handle is pulled back, the blade does not move at all.
Continuity: In Rimmer's cell, the book at the end of the bed moves from one side to the other when Lister sets himself on fire. It then moves back to its original position on the bed.
Continuity: When Kryten and the Cat enter Rimmer's cell, Lister's hair moves from in front of his shoulder to behind his back in one cut. 16.10.
Continuity: When the simulant dies, Lister has parts of the broken pots on his head. In the next shot they have vanished.
Revealing: At the end of the episode, the crew walk along a corridor, walk around a pillar, then walk straight back down the same corridor they have just walked down.
Visible crew/equipment: When the crew are standing before the Judgement computer (when Lister is worrying that he will be sent to prison) if you look above Lister's head you can see a microphone bob up and down into shot.
Factual error: The justice computer states that Rimmer is guilty of 1167 counts of 2nd degree murder, each carrying a sentence of 8 years giving a total of 9328 years. This is equivalent to 1166 counts.
Visible crew/equipment: Just after the Cat starts the thawing process and Rimmer enters the scene, a camera lens can be seen on the left side of the screen as the camera pans around.
Continuity: When Kryten steps out of his escort boots, they disappear.
Continuity: Lister's hair moves from behind his head to infront of his shoulder during the scene when the Cat activates the thaw process.
Continuity: When Kryten calls Lister to the stand, the background changes from black and white to just black. 18.20.
Revealing: One of the escort boots passes through a wall as it goes round a corner.
Continuity: Rimmer takes his hat off when he enters the mind-scanner. When he leaves, it has disappeared. 11.05.
Continuity: When Lister trys to set fire to the sheets, his locks move from behind his back to over his left shoulder between shots.
Other: Rimmer's long-service medals are absent from his ceremonial uniform during the trial. 17.15.
White Hole (season 4, episode 4)
Continuity: Kryten takes the computer slug out of the machine with his left hand yet in the next shot it is in his right hand.
Continuity: When Rimmer asks Kryten if it is the time of year his head goes for retuning, the shadow on his face changes between shots.
Continuity: Just after Kryten says what point in time he would like to return to, he is looking down and working with the screwdriver. The camera angle changes and he is looking straight forwards with the screwdriver on its side.
Continuity: When the Cat and Lister are trying to cook an egg with a bicycle powered hair drier, you can see the Cat holding a frying pan. When Lister gives up and gets off the bike, Cat picks up a spatula with his other hand and starts poking the egg with it. However, in the next shot, he is shown with both hands on his hips. It's an instant cut with the same conversation continuing, so he didn't have time to put them down.
