The movie references the novel "The Lord of the Flies" several times: They land on an island and quickly split into two groups. One wants to signal for help, and the other wants to stay on the island. A line is drawn between the two sides. The dead parachuter in the trees is the directly-channeled "beastie" in the book. Madagascar
Deliberate "mistake": When Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are talking together inside the boxes, Alex has three holes in his box allowing light in for him. Melman, Marty and Gloria have that too, but Gloria's box is lying under Alex's and Marty's, so it can't get as much light - but it does.
