Mentioned in the DVD commentary, is that the Tunnel (used to trap McClain and Farrel with traffic from both directions in DC) was an open tunnel and they had to shoot at night because they could not afford to cover it with their production budget. During the traffic jam scene, when the truck crashes against the taxi, the view inside McClane's car shows the taxi colliding against the car, dragging it away violently. From the aerial angle, the taxi doesn't touch McClane's car at all.
