| The Wife and I saw "Up" during our "SouthEast Excursion" trip while visiting Wilmington, North Carolina. It wasn't the best Pixar film, I thought it was better than "Cars" and just below "Toy Story". Still, that makes it pretty darn good (one of the trailers before the film was for Toy Story 3 - coming out June 10, 2010). I thought the whole film was going to be about his journey to South America, but his floating house hits one storm and three minutes later he's at his destination. John Ratzenberger, Pixar's "good luck charm", shows up once again in a cameo as a construction foreman who's evil boss is trying to get Carl Fredricksen (Ed Asner) to move out (scenes of the small wooden house being surrounded by gleeming high-rise buildings are very reminiscent of "batteries not included"). When Carl gets committed to an old folk's home he decides to carry out his dead wife's wishes of going to South America... by tying thousands of balloons to his fireplace. With a stowaway boy scout in tow, he quickly makes his way to South America and befriends a talking dog and an endangered bird. Loads of messages in the movie - love, environmentalism, friendship, honor, etc... and once again Pixar makes a movie that would get a writer locked in a looney bin if he tried to pitch it to a major studio. Seriously, an old man flying his house to South America? That's about as believable as a trash compactor falling in love with a trigger-happy I-Pod. The Wife and I both vote "see it". |

I didn't give away anything that wasn't already clearly shown in the previews (or any other review; EW's movie reviews give away about ten times the info I put into my review). See the movie... you'll see that I didn't give away any significant plot points. I'm very careful about stuff like that.
Saw it a second time in 2D yesterday (on a double bill with "The Hangover"). Other people who have seen it think the 3D doesn't add much to it, but the visuals of thousands of colourful balloons lifting the house in 3D is a sight to behold. Like I've said a dozen times before, I LOVE the new 3D. And as sick as it sounds, I'm psyched to see that there is a new "Final Destination" movie coming out in in 3D.
A new preview attached to "Up"... "The Princess and the Frog". Disney finally returning to traditional hand-drawn animation. But talk about spoilers, in the preview they show that when the Princess kisses the frog, instead of it turning him into a prince, it turns her into a frog. Sounds like someone has seen "Shrek" a few times too many. The film comes out in December. |

I...didn't think it was worth the wait.
It is a good film but it's just not Pixar anymore. I did liked some parts of it, the parts with the dogs were genius, it has a good plot and all that kind of things. But it's not the best Pixar film, just an average or below the average.

Did you see it in French or in English? I saw both, and I have to (shamefully?) admit that the French version was far superior.
Charles Aznavour comboed with Rachid Badouri? All sorts of win!

Speaking of French Films...thought of you this weekend. Mom ordered a movie on Netflix "Ne le dis à personne (Tell No One)", which is obviously a French movie, I think I would have enjoyed it, had it included English Subtitles. _________________ You need to get yourself a better dictionary. We got it as a present a year ago and still have to watch it. What can I say? Marie-Josée Croze gets on my nerves...
...but at least, you'll be able to tell me if it's worth my bearing it!

Ahhhh! I read that as "I would enjoy it, it had English subtitles," which I thought was weirdly formulated, but who am I to criticize others' mityping? ^_^;

Even cooler that it may have been an unsanctioned, covert operation by one or very few employees that chose to skip all the red tape to just get it done. _________________ JWR

After a long delay, courtesy of Disney's bizarre "let's make the Brits wait" policy that seems to get applied to Pixar films, this is finally out on these shores. Saw it a few days ago on a double-bill with The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and have come to the conclusion that Pixar really can spin a good film out of the oddest premises, storylines that practically any other major studio would have rejected as unworkable.
Easily Pixar's most overtly emotional film to date, Up sets the scene beautifully with the opening montage covering Carl's life; would be a hard heart not to feel at least slightly moved by it, really. Then the storyline proper kicks off; while a relatively simple tale, one that's nevertheless told with skill, some nice humour and a deft touch on the heartstrings at appropriate moments. Animation is, as usual, faultless and the 3D effect used intelligently with relatively few in-your-face moments to distract from the overall film.
Ordinarily, wouldn't hesitate to give a film of this quality five balloons, but, this being done by Pixar, who I find myself (probably entirely unfairly) holding to a higher standard than most studios these days, I feel that I can only really give it four balloons. Nothing that I can specifically put my finger on, but I found it to be overall less satisfying than the likes of Ratatouille or The Incredibles. But it's still one of the most accomplished films this year. May Pixar continue the trend into the future... _________________ I may look like I'm doing nothing, but at the molecular level, I'm really quite active.
