"Sex Drive"
A mate had this on DVD rental and brought it when we went away last weekend. I only saw bits of the movie at the time (I was cooking) but what I saw was very funny, so he lent it to me and I put in on last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it - IMHO it's a really good teen-road-trip-type movie. There are many, many bad films out there in this genre so it was more than a pleasant surprise to find this gem. It's rude, crude and lewd, with a fair amount of slapstick but if you liked "American Pie" and/or "Road Trip" then I'd very surprised if you didn't love this.
Josh Zuckerman plays Ian, the virgin protagonist and suits the role very well. Although he has a reasonable filmography for his young age, the only thing I've seen him in, other than this, is "Austin Powers in Goldmember" (2002), playing Young Evil.
Amanda Crew ("Final Destination 3") plays his long-time best friend for whom he now finds that he has feelings. This is the first film I've seen her in and though she put me in mind of Avril Lavigne she played her (I think deliberately stereotyped) character very well.
Clark Duke as Lance is the nerdy guy with something about him that all the ladies love, almost like a young Austin Powers. This is his first big role in a feature film but he comes across as confident and relaxed. He is also very funny, having some great lines.
James Marsden plays Zuckerman's bullying elder brother and is akin to Stiffler from "American Pie" mixed with Chet from "Wierd Science". This is also a great role well-played. The scene with the twist at the end Click here to see the hidden message (It might contain spoilers) where he comes out as being gay is very funny.
Seth Green ("Austin Powers" trilogy, "Buffy", "The Italian Job" (2003), "Without a Paddle", "Family Guy") as Ezekiel, the most sarcastic Amish guy you'll ever encounter, is hilarious and his scenes almost steal the show. The one during the closing credits where he's talking to the band "Fall Out Boy" and trying to get them to recompense him for repairs he's done to their tour bus is a classic.
Apart from Green, the rest of the cast are relative unknowns, which is a good thing as it make the characters all the more believable.
There are several scenes where there are uses of or references to messaging and/or sites on the internet. The running joke throughout the film is that people take a picture/movie clip on their camera or phone, which is later it's up on the relevant internet site (someone's blog, "Leaking Ladies", "You Tube" etc.), within a few minutes in one instance. A freeze-frame reveales that the mocked-up screen we see for a second or two has actually been expertly crafted with much attention to detail.
The whole film is very well edited - I did look quite closely, and took screen shots for some of the listed errors, but there were no major goofs that I noticed and very few continuity errors spotted. There's also a good soundtrack with all the music well-chosen and relevant, including a live set by Fall Out Boy at the Amish rumspringa party.
It made me laugh and I give it 5 stars!
Tail - thanks for adding this to the index! _________________ Ollie |
