The Jackal (1997)

Trivia: Just a few months before his death at age 91, Fred Zinnermann, who directed the original The Day of the Jackal (1973), on which this movie is based, actually fought Universal Studios to change the name of the film. Saying that the original had stood the test of time and he did not want the remake to bear the same name. (00:01:25)

The Jackal (1997)

Trivia: Richard Gere was first considered for the role of the Jackal until it was given to Willis, since Gere turned it down and wanted to play the hero. And this is not the first time that Willis got a role that Gere was considered for. Gere was also offered the role of John McClane in Die Hard but he turned it down.

The Jackal (1997)

Trivia: Frederick Forsyth, the man who wrote the novel "The Day of the Jackal" Insisted that his name be removed from the credits of this film. Which is why the movie is billed to be based of the Day of the Jackal screenplay by Kenneth Ross, and not the novel. (00:03:10)

The Jackal (1997)

Revealing mistake: After the Jackal's van and weapon are destroyed, we get a shot of Preston and the First Lady on the ground as they are helped up. There is lots or concrete rubble around them from the building, however you can tell it is obviously just made of foam. Especially the way Preston knocks it around as he's getting up. (01:44:35)

The Jackal (1997)

Continuity mistake: When the second subway train is coming from behind Declan and he jumps between the trains to avoid them, he grabs onto a light that is green. However, these lights turn red as soon as the trains start to pass them, and one was already passing it. The light continues to stay green while Declan holds onto it between both trains. (01:49:50)

The Jackal (1997)

Factual error: Just before Declan and the Jackal start shooting at each other in the subway tunnel, one of the trains starts coming from the opposite direction and begins passing Declan. This train continues to pass him at full speed for a full 35-40 seconds while they shoot it out. Subway trains are not nearly long enough for that. Also, during this time another train comes from behind him and he has to get between them and hold onto the light for a few seconds while they pass. But the second train then passes first while the first one passes fully about 2 seconds after the second one came... and it got there first, by about 15-20 seconds. Subway lines are about the same length as each other as well. But the first one was way longer and way wrong. (01:49:30 - 01:50:05)

The Jackal (1997)

Continuity mistake: Just before the Jackal jumps in front of the subway train, you can see the train's shadow on the wall behind him all the way back. But in the next shot as he's sprinting to make the jump, the shadow is gone. (01:47:35)

The Jackal (1997)

Revealing mistake: After Declan and Preston say their goodbyes as Preston turns his back on him to let him walk away, the camera starts to pan up as Declan begins walking down the road while Preston goes to the little shop to buy some coffee. Only a few moments later in the same shot, it reveals there are train tracks cutting behind the shop, and there is now a train passing through that Declan walks in front of where we never see him again. The problem here is that this train is moving at a speed that it would have already been close to that railroad crossing while Declan and Preston were speaking. Trains are required by law to sound their horn when close to crossings, and it was close enough that we should have heard it several times already while the two were talking. Yet the train is now there only moments later and it never sounded its horn. Also, as the train is going by, the railroad arm is still up. (01:59:30)

The Jackal (1997)

Question: At the very end, Preston tells Declan "Thank you for everything." To which Declan responds "Oh, thank you, Da." The subtitles even say that he says Da and capitalize the D in it. Why exactly did he say "da"? is that an Irish thing? I don't think he was trying to call him Dad right? and Da is Russian for Yes. And where it being the Russian yes kinda makes sense in that contexts... it does't really. So why did he say "Da" after the thank you? (01:58:35)

Quantom X

Answer: He does say Da - it's an Irish way of saying Dad.

The_Iceman

So the English word "Dad" but then the last D swallowed in the Irish accent. I hear him say dad, the last D quiet but not silent.

lionhead

Answer: Actually, I think he does say "Dad", jokingly referring to Preston looking out for him, protecting him like a father.

lionhead

Answer: Are we sure he wasn't talking about a DA as in Deputy Assistant as a forseen promotion? As we know he is a Special Agent in the movie, but after stating he is quite the hero for saving the First Lady's life perhaps a promotion is also coming.

But that's always pronounced as the initials DA.

The Jackal (1997)

The Jackal mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Going down the escalator, Declan decides to jump off it and slide down the metal between like a slide as he can't get around the people. During the slide, there is a jump cut to a closer angle. Between these shots, most of the people on either side of him completely change positions and location. (01:46:10)

The Jackal (1997)

The Jackal mistake picture

Continuity mistake: After the Jackal shoots the cop in the subway, he grabs a girl to take hostage. Just before he grabs her, you see an old Asian man and two women walking up on his left. As the shot cuts to a front view of him as he grabs the girl, the man disappears and the two girls that were walking up are now different people with different clothes on as they run past his left side. But then after he walks a few feet, suddenly the old man and the same two girls appear again, but passing him several seconds later than they would have. (01:50:20)

The Jackal mistake picture

Continuity mistake: Declan gets a good shot off on the Jackal's leg that hits through the concrete wall. However when it cuts to the next shot the Jackal is holding a different part of his leg than where he was shot, and the hole in his pants and blood are gone. (01:49:45)

Revealing mistake: When Declan first starts trying to shoot at the Jackal, his timing of trying to simulate the kick of the gun is off. The kick and shot would be simultaneous but there is a slight delay in his reaction. (01:49:35)

The Jackal (1997)

Factual error: After the Jackal jumps to the other side of the metro subway train to get away, Declan pulls out his cellphone and makes a call. However in 1997, when this movie was made and the time it takes place, there was no way you would be able to get cellphone reception in a subway station underground. (01:48:00)

The Jackal (1997)

The Jackal mistake picture

Continuity mistake: The Jackal leaps in front of the metro train to get on the other side as it passes as he is attempting to escape Declan. As he lands, the train skids to a stop and you can see a red reflector or light close to Jackal's head, with one of the doors of the train by it. After it cuts to Declan trying to get through the train, then back to The Jackal getting up, the number 81,622 suddenly appears next to the train door which was not there in the previous shot. The Jackal (1997)

Other mistake: The heavy caliber high powered mounted machine gun in the minivan with such a high cyclic rate would have recoiled so violently, that not only would the glass in the minivan shatter but it would have rocked the vehicle and kicked it around so that its shots would have been wild and all over the place after the first shot. Unlike how it's shown in the film. We are dealing with a 14.5 MM rapid fire cannon here. And when the gas tank is shot, the van isn't even shaking as the weapon is still firing. (01:43:50)

The Jackal (1997)

Character mistake: As Declan and his spotter see the Jackal's van, the spotter states that the range is it's at is 762 meters. But in the shots showing the van and their position, it is much closer than that. It's possible they meant 76.2 meters, a much more reasonable number. (01:43:05)
