Octopussy (1983)

Question: How did Bond win the game of backgammon, with Kamal Khan, when he didn't get all his chips off the board? Even the two sixes he rolled wouldn't have done it.

kh1616

Answer: Bond (taking over for the Major) had 1 piece on point 2, 1 piece on point 3, and 2 pieces on point 6. Rolling doubles in Backgammon means you get to make 4 moves instead of just 2, so he was able to remove all 4 pieces. If you have a piece on point 2, you don't have to roll a 2 to remove it. Anything higher than a 2 can be used to remove the piece. Kahn even says Bond has to roll a double 6 in order to win, which he does.

Bishop73

Answer: Not knowing anything about backgammon so this is perhaps wrong. But I thought that Bond didn't win. And the fact that he produced the Faberge egg is what ended the game. (I'm more than likely wrong tho).

Poltergeist (1982)

Stupidity: The family ask 3 so-called ghost experts into the house. After seeing flying objects in the kids' room, they are suitably impressed. But later on, the female expert is sleeping, one of the men is in the kitchen wanting to cook a steak, and the second man has his back to the monitors, his head buried in a crossword puzzle and he has headphones on with music on, so he can't see, hear or see what is going on.

kh1616

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: The only one acting stupid in this scene is the guy at the monitors. They have to eat and sleep sometime; if anything, having two people awake and one asleep at a time is the cautious route. The one guy goes into the kitchen to cook a steak, but the guy at the monitors, despite being told he'll be the only one watching them, doesn't put down his drawing or take off his headphones, depriving him of sight and sound.

Question: I don't understand the beginning; why does everyone suddenly hate Superman, and what is that alien-looking thing in the sky that is knocking the buildings down and killing the people inside, and do they think Superman is doing that?

kh1616

Chosen answer: The beginning is Bruce Wayne's perspective of the events that occurred in the movie "Man of Steel" when Superman and General Zod are fighting (if you haven't seen it, it would explain a lot of BvS events). It's General Zod's ship and the phantom drive. It cuts to 18 months later. Supermen is called to testify in front of a congressional hearing because of his vigilantism over the past 18 months and people are concerned about his actions (like the events in Africa) since he's an all-powerful alien with no way for the people to stop him, so they're very nervous. Bruce seems to blame Superman more than anyone though for the destruction and death of people he knew (and tried to save) because if Superman wasn't on Earth, Zod wouldn't have come to Earth, etc.

Suggested correction: They don't look different in any of the shots. It's the same lambchops, same temperature. They are cooked as is, so they have a dark outside but inside they are probably rare. They do look darker in the last scene but that's probably because they have gone cold and dried out.

lionhead

Suggested correction: How would a mistake like that come to be? Someone cooked them in between shots? Too much time elapsed and the substance oxidized? The potato and everything else on the plate look the same, and so do the chops, shape-wise. They might be of a slightly darker color in the very last shot with Boyle on the floor, but the plate has also been sprayed with blood, so that could account for this - mostly perceived - change.

Sammo

A mistake like this would come to be if they're using real food and not props and had to do a cut, change camera position, do a reshoot, etc and had to set the scene again and redo the cooking of the food, or remake the props for some reason, but now the food looks different. What we see as a continuous scene in a movie or TV show is not always done in one take, which is why the site is filled with countless continuity mistakes.

Barbarella (1968)

Plot hole: When Clarice visits Lecter in his new makeshift cell, she brings his drawings, which were left behind in Baltimore. She tells him how she saw the lambs being killed and heard them screaming, taking one lamb with her when she ran away. As the guards approached his cell after she leaves, the camera pans across the cell, taking in the drawings Clarice had brought, and the top one is a very detailed drawing of Clarice holding a spring lamb. She only told just told Lecter about the lamb, not enough time for him to have done that drawing.

kh1616

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: First; I do agree and support the mistake. But playing devil's advocate for a moment; she told him back in Baltimore about the ranch and how they had sheep and horses, so in theory he could have already started drawing back then and figure that a memory about the place was linked to those animals, adding the exact detail afterwards. Should also be noted that the guards approach the cell 'after she leaves', yes, but it's an 'after' that happens after she already flew back all the way from Memphis, so a few hours later.

Sammo

Your last sentence corrects the mistake, the top drawing is new and wasn't brought by Clarice. You can see chalk on top of the drawing indicating he had just made it. Several hours passed between her delivering her story and him receiving his dinner.

Plot hole: Jackie supposedly doesn't have any money, but she seems to have enough to travel halfway around the world, following Simon and Lynette.

kh1616

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: As Jackie was plotting with Simon to kill Linnet the entire time, surely its the case that Simon had provided Jackie the funds to be able to do this so that they could enact their plan?

Suggested correction: It's not like "not having money" necessarily means lacking at that exact moment any cash, including the funds for one trip; it can simply mean your lifestyle is not sustainable and you're gonna run out completely dry or be forced to sell your remaining properties soon if you don't change anything. The novel makes it much more clear because the characters actually address it and express concern for her saying that she probably exhausted the small allowance she had for that crazy stunt. Poirot in fact in the novel suggests them initially to just let her go on until she'll eventually be unable to keep up. Back to just the movie, it's also worth noting that she is following them on that one trip, which brought them in Egypt from Venice through Brindisi, so 'halfway around the world' is relative too, it's not like she's been squandering the money in this endeavour for a long time.

kh1616

Upvote valid corrections to help move entries into the corrections section.

Suggested correction: He'd just been running around the boat, and he'd just killed his wife. That'd make anyone sweat.

What the OP says is that he's already sweaty before he does any of that; if you look at the first scene when he's tricking the others, and in Poirot's flashback during the denouement, it is true that the actor's face is already pretty sweaty, although not quite as much as it is later when Simon is actually in pain. Look at him when he closes the bottle of varnish, his hair is a mess sticking to his forehead. You could argue he was nervous, but in the rest of the movie he keeps his cool all the time without such displays of perspiration.

Question: At the end, Maura Tierney is lying on Al Pacino's bed, having a nap/sleep. Are we then to presume they had sex before Pacino went to the airport to catch his plane back to LA?

kh1616

Answer: OMG, even my 7-year old daughter realised that the scene was made for the exact opposite reason. Dormer and Tierney talked "all night" and Tierney was sleepy. Dormer and Tierney had a genuine (if short-lived) friendship. Her sleeping on his bed only referred to their trust in one another. His bed had no metaphorical meaning. In fact, it was Ellie who developed a strong crush on Dormer. A crush that interfered with her objectivity as a policewoman.

Question: When the police go to Lisbeth Salander's old apartment - the one Miriam is living in - thinking Lisbeth lived there, so they can search the place, one of the policeman says, "How come the name-plate on the door says 'Salander'?" The other policeman says, "I have no idea." But they are there to search Lisbeth "Salander's" place! Can someone please explain to me why they are there if they don't believe it is the Salander place?

Chosen answer: They are looking at the mail which is all addressed to Miriam Wu, and medicine in the bathroom cabinet which is prescribed to her. Continuity mistake: When the blood is poured over Carrie at the prom, it only covers her left side - hair, shoulder, arm, body. But in the next shot the blood is all over her, especially her hair. The blood on her face is strategically placed, so it isn't in her eyes or cover her too much.

Question: How does Mikael know where Lisbeth's father and half-brother live? Lisbeth found the post office box address from the rental car rego plates, and then staked it out, for quite a while, and when a young man opened it and got the mail out, she followed him straight to her father. Mikael did none of that, so how was he able to arrive like a knight in shiny armour at the exact time to save Lisbeth's life?

kh1616

Chosen answer: Malin tells Mikael that "Karl Axel Bodin" lives at "the address for PO Box 612, at Gosseberga". Gosseberga is not a town, but the name of the farmhouse property near Nossebro where Zalachenko and Niedermann live, so it is the only place with that name near Gothenburg.

kh1616

Chosen answer: Lisbeth let Miriam stay in her old apartment on the condition that she forward any mail sent there to a post office box, so Miriam would have known the box number and location.

All he sees is people going in and people coming out, and then he sees her - the tall blonde. Problem: He never saw her going in, only going out, which is critical, because the killer is the therapist - a tall man - wearing a long blonde wig and make-up. Question: On the beach, Mr Scroggins carves Anna's name - Anna Muir - on the end of the wrong end of a wooden "fence" (it faces inland; so how on earth could captains at sea see her name as they pass by?) and what is the purpose of the wooden "fence"?

kh1616

Chosen answer: The scene takes place at a public beach where Anna and her mother go swimming and the fence may be connected to that. Anna is a small child and Mr. Scroggins carves her name where she can always easily see it, and it is far away from the water's edge. Of course, for the purpose of the movie, it was placed in such a way to be seen by the audience as a way to gauge the amount of time that is passing. It becomes worn and deteriorated over the years.

raywest

Answer: Whether or not the carving was placed inland as a convenience for the audience to see it, it is still a mistake with regard to the dialogue indicating that persons at sea being able to read Anna's name on the post. To avoid the mistake, the scene should begun showing Mr. Scroggins on the seaward side of the post carving and the for the camera to pan around to show that he is carving the name "Anna Muir." The sea could still be in the background and the dialogue would then make sense.

kh1616

Continuity mistake: When Tom, as Dickie, rents a place in Rome, and after Tom kills Freddie, the police are all over him. Marge comes calling and Tom, as Dickie, asks the policeman to ask her to come back later, which leaves Tom alone with the detective. But as we see Marge creeping up the stairs, to see Dickie, suddenly, the policeman is with Tom and the detective, even though the policeman had left and Tom had closed the doors, so the policeman should not have been there.

kh1616

Continuity mistake: Dickie's extra lover, Silvana, turns up dead, during a religious ceremony, and before anyone can get to her, she is face down, but when they do get to her, she is face up, without anyone touching her or from choppy water - the water is flat, no chop.

kh1616

Continuity mistake: From the viewpoint of a boat behind Dickie's boat "The Bird", when Dickie gives the tiller to Freddie, so he can go below with Marge, there's hardly any wind, both sails are flapping around, but when we get the view from midships, the front sail, which was on the starboard side, is now, suddenly, on the port side and full of wind, no flapping around at all.

The Thing (1982)

Other mistake: When Blair goes crazy with an axe, they put him in the tool shed and Doc injects him with something to calm him down. The problem is: Doc injects him in the inner elbow, but wipes the upper arm as if that's where the injection went. Plus you only inject in the inner elbow when you want something IV, but there was no tourniquet, no searching for a vein. It should have been given IM, into a muscle, like the upper arm.

Other mistake: When the old well needs filling in, for safety reasons, Ryan is breaking up bricks. If you are filling up a well, first, you'd need lots of bricks and stones, heaps more than Ryan's small pile, and, two, why does Ryan have to break up the bricks? In a Monastery Garden - S3-E2

Continuity mistake: The windowpane that is broken by the thief is in a door that desperately needs a good paint job. It's the door that leads outside and to a small room full of plants, a veranda of sorts. But when Laura looks at the door, she's looking at the inner door, which looks like it has just been painted, and, in the morning, the broken pane is covered up by a piece of wood, but, again, it's the inner door, which is totally wrong. It's the outer door's window pane that was broken.

kh1616

Chosen answer: M broke into the brownstone and left a note. Holmes deduced he was staying at a high-class hotel from the soap scent on the note, and gave a picture from a hidden camera to his "irregulars" on the street to stake out hotels. One of them saw him, so Holmes followed him to his next intended victim and knocked him unconscious with a baton.

Rebecca (1940)

Question: While the De Winters are watching their honeymoon photos, the girl says "I suppose that's why you married me, because you knew I was dull and gauche and inexperienced, and there would never be any gossip about me." Maxim stops the film and, looking like death, says "Gossip! What do you mean?" She says "I don't know. Don't look at me like that. What's the matter? What have I said?" Maxim says "It wasn't a very attractive thing to say, was it?" She says "No. It was rude, hateful." Now, why did she say that? And why did Maxim say what he said? All she said was "There won't be any gossip about me." What's the problem with that?

kh1616

Chosen answer: Maxim was previously married (unhappily) to Rebecca, who died tragically and under rather mysterious (and suspicious) circumstances, sparking rumors. Maxim thinks his new wife is referring to that, but she knows nothing about it and was only making an innocent remark, unaware of the rumors. The "rude, hateful" part probably refers to the "dull and gauche and inexperienced" comment - she probably thinks that is what caused his reaction, rather than the "gossip" comment, given she doesn't know the rumors. She is very young and naive and feels inadequate as the wife of a wealthy man. Maxim is older, intimidating her somewhat, and she was confused by his angry outburst.

Mrs Waggett puts the tray on the left side of the screen, then, taking two cups with her, moves to the right of screen and that's where she stays when her husband finishes talking on the phone and, amazingly, the tray that was on the left side is now in her hands, without her moving to the left side to collect it.

Continuity mistake: When Webster steals a huge diamond, one of the guards comes to from the chloroform and raises the alarm before Webster has left the building. As he hurries to leave, Webster gets shot in the left arm, and he must use a truck as a battering ram to break through a garage door; he does this, but the garage door is now on the front of the truck, obstructing Webster's view, until, suddenly, it vanishes - all that's left are the side bits of the garage.

kh1616

Continuity mistake: When Jim comes to see Webster, Webster is in the bath with a sponge that he constantly wipes himself with, but the sponge moves from one hand to the other, repeatedly, without him actually doing it.

kh1616

Plot hole: Webster meets Laura at a party and she takes him to her house - it's not really her house - and says he has to break in to show off his talents, but when Webster does break in, he walks into a pitch-black house and he walks straight to the light switch and turns on the lights, so Laura can come in to a lighted house. Problem is: Webster has never been to this house before, it's pitch-black inside (it's so dark we can't see Webster at all), and the light switch is not where most switches are - on the wall next to the door - it's on a pillar, which is really far away from the front door; there's no way he'd be able to go straight to it.

kh1616

Factual error: When Webster is attempting to open his first safe, on the job, so to speak, he only turns the wheel once. Now, I am not an expert on safes, but I do know that the wheel must be turned back and forth, with the correct numbers, a few times, at least.

So, if Martin and the constable were heading for the hammer, why did they go to the wrong side of the river? Question: When you are wallpapering, what is it that you brush on the paper after it is on the wall? Helena brushes something that looks like glue on the new wallpaper.

kh1616

Chosen answer: As far as hanging new wallpaper, there is no need to brush on any additional product once it has been pasted to the wall. It appears Helena may be doing an extra decorative step by applying a liquid glaze over the wallpaper to give it a more distinctive look, perhaps creating a sheen effect on the surface. Glaze can also be tinted to give a muted colored tone. It could also be a protective sealant. However, to remove old wallpaper, a product is brushed on that dissolves the old paste so the paper can be easily scraped off.

Question: There are two prisoners wearing chains and only underpants inside the prison; they were dancing and the guitar was being played. Can someone please tell me how the men who have chains on their legs remove their trousers for washing, them and their trousers?

kh1616

Chosen answer: Either the guards removed the chains so the prisoners could take the pants off to wash them or this is a movie mistake.

raywest

Answer: In the novel, Donn Pearce gives quite a detailed description of the method that the chain wearing prisoners went through to remove their pants without removing the chains. It is a very difficult procedure to follow but it was probably true as his account is based on serving time on the chain gang depicted in the movie.

Question: If Ripley was operated on and an alien removed a few days ago, how come they have a fully grown queen who is laying eggs, 8 to be precise as there are 8 people who have been ingested and turned into aliens? But later, when most of the crew have ejected successfully or been killed when a hand grenade was thrown into their escape pod along with an alien, one of the scientists says there are 12 more? How can that be?

kh1616

Chosen answer: Well firstly the queen was probably genetically engineered, like Ripley herself. A few days might be all the time they need to have a fully grown queen created. Secondly the 8 incubated victims were only the latest batch, they had been incubating people with xenomorphs for quite a time I suspect.

lionhead

With regards to the quick growth of the alien queen, it is standard for the xenomorph in nearly every film they appear (Aliens is the only exception, the only chestburster shown in the film is quickly killed by Apone) to grow to full size in around one day. Presumably the same is true for the queen.

Question: How come Trudi sometimes needs an oxygen mask but mostly doesn't - I can understand her not needing one (apparently, there is a glass partition between her and the rest of the helicopter; so whoever is with her has to wear masks, as they are behind the glass partition. But at one stage, Trudi and Norm are up front and Jake and Grace are behind them, and none of them are wearing masks - is the glass partition movable? And during the battle scene, you can see a bullet hole in Trudi's helicopter glass - shouldn't she need a mask now, as the outside air is getting in? Finally, how come Trudi needs a mask just after the home tree is destroyed and she and Norm and Jake and Grace (who was shot and is dying) escape and head for the Tree of Souls? What makes this time so special?

kh1616

Chosen answer: The cabin on the Aerospatiale SA-2 Samson is pressurised, and there are two sealed doors with windows separating it from the open cargo area. There are actually four seats in the cabin which is why Jake and Grace don't need masks. The cabin pressure is slightly higher than the atmosphere (+0.3 psi) which means that if there is a small rupture in the hull or canopy (such as a bullet hole) the oxygen will leak out rather than toxic gas leaking in.

Airport (1970)

Question: Near the end of the film, the plane stuck on the ground is pressurised before it can move out of the way. Why is it pressurised if it's on the ground and not in the air?

kh1616

Chosen answer: Patroni isn't referring to the cabin pressure, he says to "pressurize the manifold" - part of the engine start procedure of a Boeing 707, which I believe involves a ground crew pumping gas (nitrogen?) from a cart into the intake manifold.

Sierra1

But then Damian is told that his mother died in her home and wasn't found for a couple of days. But she was in hospital, wasn't she?

kh1616

Chosen answer: She was in a hospital but that does not mean she died there. She was likely discharged and, refusing to go into any type of assisted living situation, was sent home, where she later died. A person, unless declared legally incompetent, cannot be forced to go into a facility. Due to insurance regulations, a person can only stay in a hospital as long as they are being actively treated for a medical condition. Other mistake: In Colombia, a heavily camouflaged soldier goes into a hangar and places a bomb on it and rushes out before it explodes. On his way out, he passes another soldier who is lying as close to the ground as possible. In front of this soldier is a line of fine wire, right in front of his face. The only thing I can think of for that wire being there is as a marker for the actor.

kh1616

Factual error: A bunch of troops are in heavy camouflage in helicopters, going to an assignment. The officer in charge tells them to take their dog tags off and empty their pockets of anything that could identify them. This is silly: first, in troop helicopters, the troops wouldn't be able to hear the officer's voice - it's too noisy - and second, this would be ingrained in them, to remove dog tags etc, and would have been done back at the base, before they left.

kh1616

Hellboy (2004)

Question: I was reading the mistakes for "Hellboy" and I saw one that completely blew me away: In the scenes down in the disused train tunnels, Hellboy comes out of one with his massive arm now on his left and he's holding a gun in his right. How could the make-up people make such a huge mistake, and how come Ron Perlman, the actor who played Hellboy, not notice the difference?

kh1616

Chosen answer: They didn't put the prosthetic on the wrong arm, the scene is flipped; it's a mirror image. An extremely common film-making technique, it's usually only ever noticeable at all with asymmetrical characters and structures, like Hellboy and his stony arm.

Hellboy (2004)

Question: Why does Hellboy have to live inside a huge safe, with a massively thick door? This is his home; he chooses to live there. Why is he locked up?

kh1616

Chosen answer: A movie conversation explains Hellboy actually doesn't like being cooped up and enjoys going out from time to time, but this causes a big problem for the secret organization he's supposed to work for. Long story short, he has a curfew and the safe is the only way to make sure he doesn't break out.

Alien (1979)

Question: Just after Ripley finds out from mother "crew expendable", she has a run-in with Ash, but he doesn't hurt her - she hurts him - so why does she have a bloody nose?

kh1616

Answer: The reason for the nosebleed was a deleted scene from the film. Ripley, in her attempt to escape from Ash, opened a hatch into a corridor which had been previously damaged by the alien (also a deleted scene) and wasn't supposed to be used. She suffered depressurization and retreated back and closed the hatch before looking for another escape route. That is what caused the nosebleed.

Chosen answer: Some people are prone to bloody noses without actually being physically hurt. Extreme emotional stress or physical exertion can trigger it by breaking small blood vessels in the nasal passages. She could also have bumped her head at some point off screen and had a delayed reaction.

Plot hole: In the scene where Louise gives Carrie her new phone, she tells Carrie of her new phone number and Carrie gets upset because she has lost her old 917 prefix; but all Carrie did was throw her phone away into the ocean, she didn't have to change her number. I'm sure, as here, in New York people lose or break their phones constantly.
