This was because one of Gary's best friends died in a climbing accident only weeks before.

Trivia: Mr. Feeny makes a reference to Eric going for a ride inside a clothes dryer when he was in 5th grade. Will Friedle said this actually happened to him when he was 4 or 5 years old. He was playing hide-and-seek with his brother and hid in a dryer that he said automatically turned on when the door was fully closed.
