Hellboy mistakes
Continuity: When Hellboy is walking at one point, holding his gun up in his left, gloved hand (just after one of the agents has said "This place is like swiss cheese"), watch the frame. It switches suddenly so his right hand (the stone one) is his left, and he's holding the gun in his "right."
Continuity: Hellboy's oversized "Samaritan" revolver is shown to only hold 4 rounds. Yet he fires at least 6 without stopping to reload during his fight with the first Sammael creature in the museum.
Hellboy trivia
The corpse that Hellboy reanimates in the Russian cemetery is voiced by Guillermo Del Toro (Director).
The BPRD complex was (according to Del Toro) was originally FDR's secret emergency bunker. The library where Professor Broom dies was the president's office and Hellboy's room (with the big vault door) was his fallout shelter, just in case Germany perfected the A-bomb first.
The soundtrack for this film includes a very unusual instrument: a precision-played theremin. The theremin was traditionally used to create spooky sound effects, but it this film it's actually used for playing melody, which requires exceptional playing skill. It's most heard in the scene where the portal closes and Rasputin dies.
Hellboy easter eggs
In the Region 2 DVD, press 'left' when in the main menu until it highlights a previously unseen shape. Select this to see the Director apologising for the Introduction he does for the DVD, and holding up and criticizing the cue cards he had been given to read for it. It's very funny.
On the widescreen DVD set, on the second disk, go to the Bellamie Hospital page. When you get there, hit the down arrow twice and you will be led to a hidden link located around halfway between the Final Campaign link and the Main Page link. Hit this to see a hidden drawing of the cast.
On the 2-disc Special Edition, on Disc One, go to the Special Features menu and select Main Menu, then hit down. This highlights a previously unseen shape (cat food maybe?) that leads to a selection of Official "Overheard at the Monitor" Quotes from Guillermo del Toro.
