Dark Shadows

Question: Why did it take so long for Dr. Hoffman to become a vampire? I'm referring to at the very end when she was underwater and opened her eyes.

Bryanna Norris

Answer: It's unknown how long it took for her to become a vampire. She was tossed into the bay and sunk to the bottom, lying there unconscious for a period of time. She may have turned early on, but did not awaken until much later.

She had teeth when she was being bit by Barnabus. She had turned before he confronted her. He just drained her to a weakened state and she woke back up in the bay.

Question: I don't understand why Victoria calls herself "Josette" at the end of the movie. Is she really Josette in a reincarnated body? Or does she want to pretend to be Josette?

Answer: In the original television series, it was implied that 18th Century Josette Dupres had reincarnated as either Maggie Evans or as Victoria Winters in the 20th Century (Barnabas pursued Maggie at first but then decided Victoria was Josette's reincarnation). However, Victoria then traveled back in time to the 18th Century and actually met Josette, which was confusing (the same soul in two unrelated bodies in the same timeline seems unlikely). Tim Burton sidestepped that confusion by omitting the time-travel part of the original storyline. In both the original series and the movie, though, the point is that Victoria and Josette share a soul. Toward the end of the film, Victoria finally accepted that she was Josette and that Barnabas was her long-lost love.

Question: Beside Barnabas, does Angelique have other love interests throughout the two centuries?

Answer: Most likely there were "love interests" she used to help build her fishing business over the years, but her deepest and truest love was for Barnabas - if she could not have him, then no one will, so she cursed him forever.

Question: What is the relationship like between Elizabeth and Angelique?

Answer: Business adversaries on the surface, but a personal distaste for each other - Angelique does not like Elizabeth for still being in the fishing business, and for being a Collins. Elizabeth does not like Angelique because Angelique is trying to destroy the Collins' fishing business and run the Collins out of town.

Question: After their mansion burns down, what happens next to the Collins family?

Answer: It's unknown. The original intention was to make Dark Shadows into a film franchise and that question probably would have been answered in the sequel. However, there have been no additional films made.

Question: Why does Barnabas refuse to take Angelique's heart when she offers it?

Answer: Quite simply, it's because Barnabas hates Angelique and has hated her for almost 200 years. Back in the late 1700s, the witch Angelique and Barnabas had a brief romantic fling; as a result, Angelique fell madly in love with Barnabas. Unfortunately, Barnabas moved on and fell in love with another woman, Josette. In a fit of enraged jealousy, Angelique tortured Barnabas through witchcraft and eventually cursed him to become a vampire, which also precipitated Josette's suicide. So, Barnabas hates Angelique like poison and would never forgive her.

Question: Why is Angelique so obsessed with Barnabas?

Answer: She was obsessively and eternally in love with Barnabas, though he had spurned her.

raywest

Along with the answer by RayWest: She is in love with him. How does anyone fall in love? People usually don't choose or plan to fall in love with a certain person. Of course, as RayWest wrote, her love is obsessive in nature. Sane, rational people will try to accept rejection and move on.

Question: What happened to the mansion at the end? Did it get fixed?

Answer: Yes.

Question: Why didn't everyone Baranabus bit turn into a vampire?

Answer: That question has already been asked and answered. The original vampire myth states, anyone who dies by the bite of a vampire, while rise as one. That's after the victim has been completely drained of blood.

Question: Why didn't everyone Barnabas bit turn into a vampire?

Answer: That's for the modern day vampire. The original myths state that a person who dies by the bite of a vampire will rise as one, watch the classic Hammer Films from the 1950's.

Answer: Along with the original answer, it was only those victims where he took enough blood over a long period of time, until they are absolutely drained, did they transform into a vampire. Those victims who were only bit in order to satisfy a bloodlust did not transform, even if they ended dying later from things like blood loss or infection.

Question: Why does Angelique curse Barnabas and kill his parents and Josette?

Answer: In the 1700s, Angelique, a witch, was romantically spurned by Barnabas. Out of jealousy, spite, and revenge, Angelique cursed him, killed his parents, and caused Barnabas' betrothed, Josette, to fall off a cliff to her death.

Question: When Elizabeth is interviewing Victoria for the governess job, Victoria says that men would "become unmanageable" if there was gender equality. What does she mean by this?

Answer: Victoria means that women traditionally manipulate men quite easily by using sex and sexy appearances. If true "gender equality" existed, then men would see and respect women as more than mere sex objects, which would undermine women's control over men.

Charles Austin Miller

Plot hole: When Elizabeth is interviewing Victoria for the first time, she mentions that Victoria had sent her an application, therefore her name had to have been on it. However, Maggie Evans didn't change her name to Victoria Winters until she was on the train en route to Collinwood for the interview, therefore Elizabeth would have been expecting Maggie Evans, not Victoria Winters.

Angelique Bouchard: I'm going to make an offer to you, Barnabas. My last. You can join me by my side and we can run Collinsport together as partners, and lovers... Or I'll put you back in the box.
Barnabas Collins: I have already prepared my counter-proposal. It reads thusly: You may strategically place your wonderful lips upon my posterior and kiss it repeatedly!
