Continuity mistake: When Lumburgh meets with the Bobs, Dom is sitting beside him during the entire meeting. However when Bob Slydell pulls Lumburgh's personnel file, Dom has disappeared from the room.

Continuity mistake: In the scene after they leave the hurt guy's party, and they are in the car, Joanna's hair appears different: when the camera is on her the hair is blowing in her face though when the camera is behind her and focused on Peter her hair is behind her ear and not blowing at all.

Continuity mistake: Towards the beginning of the movie when Peter Michael and Samir are at the diner for the first time, Peter notices Jennifer Aniston and she has two full plates of food in her hands. Then she gets into some heated argument with her boss and they cut back to Peter and the guys again and back to Jennifer but this time she doesn't have the plates.

Revealing mistake: When the guys go to see Tom at the BBQ, he has his head in a support cage. Every time he moves, and particularly when he laughs, this cage moves around and wobbles. The point of these cages is to keep the head still and in line with the spine, and are bolted into the bone itself. Therefore, not only should it be impossible for it to be moving, it would seriously hurt if it was.

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Peter, Michael and Samir are consulting with the crack-addict magazine salesmen, you will notice it is dark outside. The next scene is Bill's birthday party during the day at the office where they discover money is missing. Then the next scene is back at Peter's apartment continuing the scene where it happens to be dark again.

Continuity mistake: In the scene in the beginning of the movie where Peter is talking to Bill about the TPS reports, we see his computer monitor and the text on it is blue. Later, when he's trying to shut his computer down to escape work early, we see that the text is now yellow.

Continuity mistake: When Joanna and Peter first meet in Chotchskies, note the differences in Joanna's upper body (placement of hair on shoulders, placement of arms and hands, shoulder tilts, and so on) as the film cuts a number of times from Peter to Joanna and back again. For instance, we see her grasping her arms, and a split second later her arms are at her side.

Continuity mistake: When Peter and Joanna are driving to Tom's party, the background changes significantly in a short cut. They're in a rural area and all of a sudden houses appear behind Peter.

Continuity mistake: When Lumbergh is talking to Milton in the basement, he is finishing his piece of birthday cake. He throws the plate out in a nearby garbage can, then suddenly has a cup of coffee in his hand, when Dom comes running after him. (01:09:45)

Other mistake: Peter is playing "Tetris for Windows". We saw earlier that the computer's UI was Mac-like. (00:19:20 - 00:43:45)

Factual error: When Peter is fishing, the fish being caught is a largemouth bass. When he holds the fish up in the office, it is a striped bass.

Suggested correction: You can see in his cooler a second fish, so it's not just the fish we see him catch.

Trivia: Director Mike Judge wanted the story to be able to take place anywhere, so the state is never specified. Even the license plates on the cars are stateless.

Question: While recognizing that this film is entirely fictitious, how likely is it that an IT firm in 1999 would have allowed a former employee access to the premises after being laid off, never mind continue to send him a paycheck as with Milton Waddams? I myself was fired the following year and got the walk of shame treatment ("you have 5 minutes to clear your desk - the taxi's waiting outside") which at the time already seemed pretty standard.

Answer: Simply because he is basically invisible to them. Anyone can walk into that place, no guard outside, no key-card required. Nobody cared. At least you got a taxi.

Exactly. These things can happen. It depends on the place and how they operate. As recently as January 2024, I read about one young woman who went into a Kroger grocery store and worked for six hours, as an experiment. She has also done this at Target and Walmart. She wears clothes that look like a real employee's.

Answer: They never told Milton he was fired, they just cruelly cut off his paycheck, figuring he'd eventually get fed up and leave (he'd actually been laid off years ago, but a payroll glitch kept him getting a paycheck). The management is hoping if they're cruel enough, he'll stop showing up.

Brian Katcher

This is actually the reverse of what happened. The glitch caused him to continue to receive a paycheck, even though he'd been laid off. The "Bobs" corrected the glitch, so he would no longer receive a paycheck. In an effort to avoid confrontation, they chose not to say anything to him, hoping he'd realise it and leave on his own.
