Review: New Moon

Trivia

The movie was a not so subtle plug for Apple/Macintosh. The director/producer Irwin Winkler is a "Mac man." All the personal computers Angela uses are Macs. Even at the end, the computer conference was filmed at the Moscone center in San Francisco and is a tribute/simulation to the main MacWorld conference which is held every January at the Moscone. The plot is based on the good guys using Macs and the bad guys on PC's/Windows. Still today, but especially raging back in the 1990's, was the huge Mac rivalry with Windows. See more...

Mistake Factual error: Angela Bennett finds the Praetorian's IP while using the PC in the Cathedral's bank: it's 23.75.345.200 - they want us to believe that this is an IP, but no IP can contain numbers greater than 255. [Common practice, like fake phone numbers, but still worth noticing].

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After Angela has set off the fire alarm at Cathedral & made the others leave, she checks the computer. She hears the fire engines outside, and walks over to the window. As she walks, we can see the camera rig reflected in the cubicle wall glass.

Mistake Factual error: Sandra Bullock uses her laptop computer to do word processing but when you see a close-up of the screen the program in use is a spreadsheet.

Mistake Continuity: After Sandra comes out of the shower of the motel, she combs her hair while listening to the news. When she watches the TV it changes from a Sony to a Sharp.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Dr. Champion first meets with Angela in the hotel room, he tosses some folded clothes to her. In the shot where the clothes leave his hands, they are beginning to flip over forward, but when the camera switches to Angela catching them, they land perfectly upright.

Mistake Factual error: When Angela receives the diskette and calls Dale, he's reading from his monitor that she received the package 3 minutes ago. His screen lists the tracking activity of the package, but only with a time, not a date. Tracking a package without the date would be pretty useless for an international courier like FedEx, which can take days for long trips.

Mistake Factual error: When Angela goes back to her house and finds that it's being sold, why are the cops letting her busybody neighbor hang around, ask her questions, and give opinions about her answers? If this were to happen for real, I think they'd ask the neighbor if she could identify her and then send her home.

Mistake Revealing: On the beach, after Jack kills the mugger, he "cuts" himself with a knife to appear heroically injured. As the moon glints over the blade, it is obvious that he is pressing the back of the blade into his palm.

Mistake Factual error: When Angela is leaving to go the Mexico, right after the computers are fixed, you can see some guys in US Army uniforms in the background. They have both officer insignias on their lapels, and NCO insignias on their shoulders. You can only be one or the other.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Angela is entering the computer convention, she pushes past a woman with a curly blonde French twist. In the next shot, the camera zooms out and she pushes past the same woman again.

Mistake Revealing: When Secretary Bergstrom tells Eddie to, "Take the parkway," they are driving along, yet the transmission is in 'park' and the ignition in the off position.

Mistake Continuity: When Angela is confirming her online vacation reservation, the screen shows her Seat Assignment: 8B. Yet a moment later, after she confirms the screen's 8B, it becomes confirmed as 8A.

Mistake Factual error: When Angela Bennet comes out of the hospital, the Mexican hotel clerk checks the computer and tells her she's checked out and therefore has no room to sleep in. Although set in Mexico, the message on screen says "Ha salida". This translates to a jibberish "She exit door". The correct translation is "Ha salido". "She exited" or "She left".

Mistake Continuity: When Angela hits Jack with the fire extinguisher the second time, we see it going over the railing with him, but in the next shot of Jack falling it is nowhere to be seen. In the next overhead shot the extinguisher is already on the ground near where Jack is going to land.

Mistake Revealing: When Angela knocks the nurse's computer monitor down, there is only a power lead seen, no data lead to connect to the tower.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Angela trips the fire alarm at Cathedral, and the fake Angela is being prompted to leave the cubicle by some other guy, and she storms out, watch when they switch shots to Angela hiding behind the wall. In the background, you can see the other two in the cubicle repeating the same actions.

Mistake Plot hole: When Jack first gets the diskette after arranging the theft of Angela's bag, he cuts his hand to show he struggled with the thief. The next scene shows them on his boat, a few hundred yards from shore, where Angela is helping dress the wound. They then speak of calling the police. When they'd just walked along the beach from the resort, and with the hotel in the background on shore in the scene, why would they take the time & trouble to (presumably go to a dock), get on the boat, drive out a few hundred yards, stop the boat, sit down and THEN deal with the wound, and talk of the police, instead of simply walking back to the hotel & getting it all dealt with immediately?

Mistake Continuity: After Dr. Champion dies in hospital, Angela pushes the nurse's computer monitor, smashing it on the ground. As she grabs it to throw it down, the front fascia pops off, showing it's just a prop. As well, from the angle we can see the screen, it's black (since it's not really on.).

Mistake Continuity: When Dale's plane crashes into the storage silos, we see the cockpit completely explode, yet the next frames show a closeup of Dale just before he hits them.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene where Angela is in jail, she goes to make her one phone call. When she is talking on the phone you can see that the receiver is already in the down position, meaning that the call is already disconnected.

Mistake Continuity: When Sandra Bullock is looking on the screen at an IP address, we cut from her and the monitor to just the monitor and the IP address changes.

Mistake Continuity: When a police car is chasing Angela Bennett's car, the wiper blades on Angela's car are moving considerably faster, seen from outside the car, than from inside.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene before a police car starts chasing Angela Bennett's car, Highway Patrol is checking her license plate number 3POW893 - reported stolen. But in the very next scene where Angela's BMW is falling from a hill, we can see that the license number of the car is 3POW827.

Mistake Continuity: Just before the guy crashes the plane into the towers, he reports his height as 1,300 feet. There is an almost instant look at the console in front of him and you can see the altimeter is saying he's at 700 feet. Whatever the hackers can change (they seem to change his GPS system reading) they cannot change this which relies on sensors mounted in the plane itself.

Mistake Continuity: When Angela arrives at the Cathedral offices, the elevator she gets off shows "20" on the frame, for the 20th floor, but all other activity references the office being on the 5th floor.

Mistake Revealing: When Angela escapes in the dinghy from Jack's yacht, as she rushes to the shore, she smashes the boat into some large rocks. You can tell these are very fake plastic boulders.

Mistake Continuity: The "Ruth Marx" signature on the photocopy is different than the one Angela signed in Mexico.

Mistake Continuity: Just before Angela and Jack sing Moon River, his sunglasses are suddenly on.

Mistake Factual error: When Angela first gets the disk from Dale, he tells her to click the little icon in the corner and hit control, shift. But then she hits control shift first then clicks the icon.

Mistake Factual error: When the police are chasing Angela on the highway, the rain is running straight down their windshield. In reality, raindrops are pushed up over the top of the car by the airstream. In the same way, rain on the side of the car is blown toward the rear, but the shots of Angela driving show the rain running straight down the driver's side window, as it would if the car were sitting still.
