The Tourist

Factual error: As Frank walks on the roof, he is being filmed from different camera positions. Filming him from behind, the Rialto bridge is visible in the distance. Filming him running towards the camera, the Guggenheim terrace is in the distance. Not possible, because there is a bend of the Canal Grande between the bridge and the Guggenheim.

Continuity mistake: As Frank walks on the roof, he is being filmed from different camera positions. The location and the number of chimney heads changes from take to take.

Factual error: When the two arrive in Venice, they check into the Hotel Danielli, an actual Venezia landmark which sits on the Lagoon, at least half a kilometer down from the Piazza San Marco When Johnny Depp goes to look out the window of their room, he is looking at the Rialto Bridge... a good 20-25 minute walk on a good day.

Revealing mistake: The scene where Frank is chased across the roof tops is shot indoors. First, the light and shadows are very bright - but in the outdoors scenes it is cloudy, and there are no clear shadows. Second, the shadows show almost horizontal lighting - a position the sun does not have in Venice in late morning.

Factual error: While dragging Frank after the boat on a rope, Elise is seen pushing the gas handle to full power. The boat speeds up, but not a lot. Later on, we see the boat going much faster. But boats do not have gears, so couldn't suddenly get an extra burst of speed.

Continuity mistake: The two policemen on board the train take a picture of Franck, which is submitted to the British inspector via email. The inspector sees it on his computer screen and then prints it out. He then goes to the printer, but doesn't take the printout from the printer, but instead from the filing basket to the right of the printer - no-one's moved it there. The printout of Frank's face is there too quickly. It can't be done in such a short time.

Continuity mistake: In Paris, Elise holds the envelope inches above her cup, yet a frame later her hands are way up above the cup.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: When interrogated about the safe, the knife to Elise's face disappears in the angles shot under her chin.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: While Elise is opening Frank's handcuffs, his right hand is either raised or lowered depending on the angle.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: When the thugs shoot at Elise's boat she ducks way below the glass, yet a frame later, from the opposite angle, she is merely turning her head away.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: During the boat chase, Frank cries "Elise, Elise!", a thug shoots at her boat and the front glass breaks, turning the single hole to a double one: with a butterfly shape. A frame later it's back to a single hole.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: In the train, when Elisa is about to enter carriage number 2, a passenger behind her pops-out of nowhere.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: At the train station, when Elise watches the train timetable, the passers-by behind change between frames.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: When Frank jumps off the rooftop and throws a cop to the water, his hat swaps from being on the right to on the left.

Sacha

Other mistake: Towards the final scene we see Frank and Elise drifting away in a sailboat that moves forward but the sail is not up.

Factual error: In the boat chase on the Canal, Frank turns the wheel on his boat, and the boat turns sharply. But the boat is being dragged and the engine is not running. Turning the wheel will then make very little (or no) difference in its direction. Motorboats turn by the propeller turning, not with a rudder like a sailing boat.

Jacob La Cour

Continuity mistake: When Frank walks on the roof, the distance to the big fat chimney increases / decreases between shots.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: Frank is handcuffed with a railing between his hands, but when the cop steps down from the boat they are both on the left side of the railing.

Sacha

Elise: I'm sorry I got you involved in all this.
Frank Taylor: Why are you involved?

Trivia: This film oddly received a Golden Globe nomination for Best Picture - Musical or Comedy, despite the fact that it's more of a thriller, and also received largely negative reviews.
