In the last scene, the family is sitting in a cafe, and the oldest son says the news of the trial was even on CNN. Assuming he invented his windshield wiper in 1967, and the movie's timeline progressed 12 years, that would have put the date of the trial at 1979. CNN was founded in 1980, thus, it wouldn't have been around for at least another year. [The key words you used are "assuming he invented the windshield wiper in 1967." Well, how about assuming he invented the windshield wiper in 1968? That would put it in 1980.]
