Entry In one scene of the film, when Bella and Charlie are eating at the diner, there is a dark-haired woman in a red sweater sitting at the counter with a laptop, being served her meal by the waitress. The woman being served is the author of the Twilight series, Stephenie Meyer.
Entry Stephenie Meyer, author of the Twilight series, got the idea for Twilight from a dream she had back in 2003. She dreamt of a girl and a boy sitting in a meadow, talking about their impossible love for each other. The girl was just a normal, human girl. The guy was outrageously beautiful, sparkly, and obviously a vampire. It is because of this single dream that A) The Twilight series came to be and B) Meyer's vampires sparkle in the sunlight.
Entry Bella drops the apple in the cafeteria when she gives her theories on what Edward is. When he catches the apple, after he bounces the apple back up from his foot, the way that his hand catches the apple is the cover of the book.
Entry Actor Rob Pattinson is very musically talented. On top of writing and performing two songs for the film's soundtrack, his performance in the "Bella's Lullaby" scene includes him actually playing the piano. This is according to the Illustrated Movie Guide.
Entry When Bella is invited to the Cullen's house for the first time, she and Edward head for the stairway. Against the wall is a cross lying at an angle. Though they do not discuss it in the film, in the book Edward explains to Bella the history of the cross and how Carlisle acquired it. It's clear that vampires do not fear crosses.
Entry At the end of the movie when Bella is sitting on the bench prior to prom, Jacob offers to help her since her foot is in a cast. Edward says to Bella "I leave you alone for one second and the wolves descend." This is a veiled reference to the fact that Jacob is indeed a wolf, which you find out in the second book "New Moon".
Entry When Jacob and his friends meet with Bella and her pals at the beach, they talk about the Cullens, and one of Jacob's friends says, 'The Cullens don't come here.' That person is Sam Uley, the future leader of the werewolf tribe of which Jacob is a member.
Entry When Mike and the rest of the boys at Forks High School are trying to get Bella's attention in the lunch room, Jessica remarks that Bella is like "a shiny new toy." This is a direct line from the first chapter of Midnight Sun, a book "in the works" by Stephenie Meyer. Midnight Sun is Twilight told from Edward's perspective. The first chapter and rough draft that leaked over the Internet are posted on Stephenie Meyer's website.
Entry In the books, Edwards is described as being Bella's "Vampire Angel". In the scenes shot in the science lab, Edward is sitting with his shoulders hunched and behind him there is a stuffed white owl. In some shots you can't see the body of the owl and it gives the impression that Edward has white wings.
Entry In the scene where Rob and Kirsten jump out of his bedroom window to the tree, Catherine Hardwicke wrote a bunch of lines for Rob to choose from and he chose "You better hold on, spider monkey!"
Entry When Bella is looking up the Quileute mythology book she finds a listing for a bookstore in Port Angeles. Under this tab there is a list of other places to get the book, like Amazon.com, including "Little Brown" which is the publishing company for the "Twilight" series.
Entry The Cullen crest depicts 3 images: the hand (faith, sincerity), the lion (strength, ferocity) and the trefoil (perpetuity). Jasper, Emmett, and Edward wear the crest on wristbands while Rosalie wears the pendant on a necklace and Alice wears it on a choker.
Entry When Bella, Edward and Renee are in the hospital, in the background on the TV past Renee, look closely - it's footage from a few scenes earlier during the attack in the ballet studio.
Entry The director Catherine Hardwicke gave the nomad Victoria her own personal pants/jeans to wear during the boat scene where James and Laurent attack Waylon Forge. (on the audio commentary DVD).
Entry After Bella wakes up in the hospital and Edward says he should leave her, Kristen Stewart starts stuttering, "No, no, no, no no!" She actually had a monologue she was supposed to perform but got so caught up in the scene she could only stutter.
Entry For the baseball scene, on the Twilight "Special Features" DVD they discuss how the characters had to use clear plastic Christmas ornaments (the kind used for crafts) in place of actual baseballs since they didn't use gloves (vampires would not use gloves!). Then they used CGI to change its appearance and made it look like a baseball.
Entry At the end of the movie, when the credits are rolling, you see Rob and Kristen walking and then falling on their backs in the grass in the forest. This forest scene was deleted from the movie. What happens after they fall back is that Kristen asks Rob if he really wants a taste of her blood. He says yes. She offers her finger (right hand) and puts it in his mouth. He bites it and when she reacts a little, he calls her a "fragile little human." According to the director, Catherine Hardwicke, it is Kristen's favorite scene.
Entry Even though breakaway glass is used for the bowl of salad, Rosalie cuts her fingers/bleeds on the glass so the director requested she wear gloves. This is when Bella comes to meet the Cullen family the first time.
Entry During Comic Con, one of the audience members asked if anything spontaneous occurred during filming. Catherine Hardwicke responded that when Rob was doing the kissing scene, he got a little passionate and fell on the floor. You see Stephenie Meyer next to him laughing and Rob looks chagrined. (Special features DVD.)
Entry When Bella puts down the Rainier can next to the other Rainier can in the scene for Charlie (scene where Charlie is cleaning the rifle), note that the two cans line up to form the R in Rainier perfectly. Director Catherine Hardwicke noticed it and said it on the audio commentary.
Entry In addition to Rob Pattinson composing and performing some of the music for the film, his sister, Lizzy Pattinson, sings on the soundtrack. (Confirmed by director, Catherine Hardwicke on the DVD commentary.).
Entry Before Twilight, Emile Hirsch and Kristen Stewart worked together in a film, Into the Wild. Emile would later recommend Kristen to Twilight director Catherine Hardwicke, who had worked with Emile on Lords of Dogtown. Interestingly enough, also in that film was Nikki Reed, who would later play Rosalie in Twilight.
Entry The director Catherine Hardwicke added the armadillo in the background of the biology class. It is a tribute to her home state of TX. The armadillo is in the scene where Bella and Edward sit together in Biology class for the first time where he looks mad at her.
Entry In the hospital scene, when Bella wakes up and is talking to Renee, you can see the flashback that plays while Edward is trying to suck the venom out, on the TV behind Renee.
Entry When Bella first arrives at Charlie's house, note the wolf picture on the wall in Bella's bedroom. This is meant to foreshadow the werewolves that appear in the next movie. (Confirmed by the director, Catherine Hardwicke, in the DVD commentary.)
Entry The gentleman who sells Bella the book in Port Angeles is the steady cam operator (confirmed by director Catherine Hardwicke).
Entry In the hospital scene near the end of the film, the picture on the wall above where Edward is "sleeping" is a picture of Bella in the Ballet Studio.
Entry In the theatrical trailer, there is a scene where Bella is standing by her truck and Edward is standing by his Volvo. Emmett says to Edward "Edward, she is not one of us." This scene was deleted from the actual movie and is only available on the "special features" DVD.
Entry Kristen Stewart wore director Catherine Hardwicke's shirt in the bedroom kissing scene. Catherine has not washed or worn it since. (Per Twilight director's notebook).
Entry When Bella is researching on the internet about vampires, she clicks an India link. A picture comes up of a 'vampire', but in fact it is a picture of the Devil from the Codex Gigas, or the 'Devil's Bible' as it is known.
Entry Stephenie Meyer (on the bonus features DVD) discusses how she wishes she had thought of putting the dream sequence in her book that is in the movie. When Bella dreams of Edward in her bedroom, he is in the room. Bella immediately sits up and switches on the light, and he is not in the room. The audience knows that Edward was in the bedroom with Bella, and Stephenie Meyer says, "Oh, I should have done that!" in the book.
Entry Kirsten Stewart was allowed to choose the song "Flightless Bird" by the band Iron and Wine for the prom scene. Catherine Hardwicke said it is very rare for an actress to suggest a piece of music that would actually make it into the movie.
Entry Chicken and cheddar was stuffed in James' collar so that Edward would "appear" to take a chunk of flesh out of James' neck during the infamous fight scene at the end. (Per audio commentary).
Entry Cam Gigandet, who plays James, once stated that when he auditioned for a part in the film, he won and was originally cast as Emmet. However, he preferred to play James, and he got the role. He refers to James as the vampire's vampire.
Entry In a cafeteria scene, Eric is saying something about a pyramid. This is taken from a "rock opera" produced by director Catherine Hardwicke in her college days.
Entry When Bella is in the hospital at the end of the movie, the television in her room is showing the fire at the ballet studio. In that scene, the television also shows Taylor Lautner (Jacob), sitting and talking with Kristen Stewart (Bella). It is probably a clip from an interview.
