Trivia

The name Ben Gardner comes up in the film when Brody asks if Ben caught the Tiger shark, and when Brody and Hooper find Ben's battered boat (which leads to Hooper seeing his severed head), though Ben is never introduced in the film. Ben does make two unidentified appearances while alive. When Hooper arrives in Amity, Ben is the first man to greet him at the dock, and at the start of the shark hunt Ben is the first man shown in a moving boat, as he complains about the other fishermen. Mistake Revealing: When the shark bursts through the window of the cabin, in each of the shots facing Brody, including when he shoves the air tank into the shark's mouth, the glistening water is visible in the window's reflection behind Brody. The shark's reflection is never seen behind Brody, despite the shark's massive size in the small cabin. Bruce must have had the day off during Roy Scheider's takes.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When the fishermen start out on the hunt, Ben Gardner appears in a close-up leaning on the windshield at forward deck, while talking about how stupid some of the others are. In the next wide shot of the boats, Ben's green boat is towards the left of the screen, and the large reflector screen and camera, that are mounted to the bow of his boat, are visible in front of the forward window where Ben is seen in the previous shot.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper gets his gear from below, after the explosion in the engine room, he runs to the deck passing Quint using the fire extinguisher. The camera pans from Brody, who stands on the bridge deck, to Hooper right below him. So where exactly is the tall iron ladder that leads up to the bridge deck in this shot? It should be behind Hooper, in front of the window, but it's gone! But don't fret, it's back in the following shots.

Mistake Continuity: At the scene just after the fake shark scare, the real shark shows up at the pond area of the beach. As the lifeguard in a small boat reacts to everyone's panic, the shark tips over the boat then appears underneath him to tear his leg off. We watch as it sinks slowly to the bottom. You can plainly see that the lifeguard is barefoot in the boat. The severed leg has a tennis shoe on.

Mistake Continuity: Orca's ID number normally reads MS 15 LF on both her port and starboard side at the bow. However, after Quint shouts, "Hooper, you idiot. Aint you watchin it?" Orca's ID number reads M 15 L at port side and 15 LF at starboard. Go figure.

Mistake Continuity: Quint embeds his machete into the wood at the side of the boat. In the following wideshot the machete is gone! Then as Orca starts to move, when Hooper says, "He's chasing us. I don't believe it," lo and behold, the machete is back! But wait, when the shark leaps onto the boat the machete is gone again, and then as the shark devours Quint the machete is back for him to grab, so he can valiantly stab the shark.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After the shark disappears, with Quint in its mouth, in the next shot facing Brody the door to the cabin closes. The wire attached to the door, leading offscreen to the right, is clearly visible.

Mistake Continuity: When Chief Brody is standing on the boat, almost ankle deep in water, he throws down the pump and is about to climb up the ladder. In the next shot, while he is on the ladder, the shark (we presume) hits the boat making it list to the right and the deck is dry.

Mistake Revealing: Just as Quint finishes scraping his nails on the chalkboard, the camera begins to move in closer when he takes the first bite of the cracker. On the right side of the screen under Harry's chin, Roy Scheider is seen ducking down while staring at the camera, as it pans toward Robert Shaw, and he then lifts his left hand up, cueing Robert's line.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: While Quint is in the shark's mouth, the comfy white cushion is visible under his back, protruding from the shark's mouth.

Mistake Continuity: On the death certificate for Chrissie, the shark's first victim, the date of death is July 1st. But later, on the reward paper posted by the boy's mother, it says that the date of Alex's death was June 29th. Alex died after Chrissie, not before.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark bursts into Orca's cabin and tries to attack Brody, in the shots facing the shark, at the right of the screen is the forward window. The previously shattered glass (from the yellow barrel) is now miraculously intact within the window frame, and the large wood cabinet below that window is gone. The glass is shattered once again, when Brody climbs out of the cabin, through the window beside it.

Mistake Continuity: The number of barrels on the deck of the Orca changes from shot to shot during the final scene.

Mistake Revealing: When Hooper encounters Ben, the shape and size of the hole in the hull of Ben Gardner's boat, as well as the paint stripes on the hull, all change in this shot. (The close-ups of Ben's appearance were shot later in pick-ups after principal photography wrapped.)

Mistake Factual error: When Quint is telling the story of the Indianapolis, he says the ship went down on June 29th. It actually went down on the night of July 29th.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When Hooper is underwater in the cage wearing scuba gear, very bright light reflections from the crew are visible on the regulator.

Mistake Continuity: Before Alex's attack, the guy who plays with his dog Pippet on the beach wears a bright yellow Izod polo shirt with straight hemmed sleeves, in his close-ups. However, in the wideshots the polo he wears is pale yellow, with shorter sleeves that have the classic rib-knit cuffs.

Mistake Plot hole: When Hooper and Chief Brody are trying to get the Mayor to re-close the beach after finding Ben Gardner's boat, they fail to mention they also found Ben Gardner's severed head. The Mayor would be forced to re-close the beach if yet another confirmed shark fatality had been mentioned, but Hooper and Brody never bring that important detail up. [This is still a mistake, but the explanation for this is that the scene where they find Ben Gardner's head was not in the original script. Originally, they just found his boat. Spielberg felt the scene needed a little more shock value so they shot the part with the head in a swimming pool long after the main filming had been completed.]

Mistake Continuity: At the beach party, when Cassidy and Chrissie make eyes at each other, in the close-up he sits behind certain people including a girl with blond braids and guy in a denim shirt, with long sleeves. However, in the next wide shot, denim shirt guy has his sleeves rolled up and many of their positions are different.

Mistake Revealing: When Charlie and Denherder, the two fishermen, first wrap the link chain around the corner wood piling, the dock they stand on is clearly visible. A bit later when the shark takes their bait, the crossbeams at the base of the dock are actually gone for the stunt.

Mistake Revealing: When Quint is gone, the shark bursts through the window of the cabin surprising Brody and in its second close-up, with its jaws wide open, the shark's head moves from left to right of the screen. As it does, the aft side of the cabin set is visible on the left, with the wall conspicuously missing and then at the fore side of the cabin, the window frame is not complete.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After losing Quint, Brody is in the flooded cabin as the ship tips. Just before the shark bursts in, there is an exterior shot looking into the cabin through the window with the shards of glass. A crew member wearing a jacket and hat is visible in the reflection of the triangular piece of glass, at the top right of the screen.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After Quint walks on deck and tosses the life vests to Hooper and Brody, Quint asks, "Hooper, what exactly can you do with these things of yours?" Just as Hooper turns around, the clear moving reflection of a boom mic and pole are visible on the glass of the door to the cabin, just behind him.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint goes below deck to get the machete, with the intent to cut the barrel lines, the machete he takes is shiny and clean, with no rust or pit marks at all. Yet, when Quint holds it over his head and then embeds it into the side of the boat, the entire blade is rusty and full of pit marks.

Mistake Continuity: There is a scene where Chief Brody and his wife are talking about their son's birthday present. She says that he probably won't go in the water after what happened yesterday (the attack on the Kintner boy). The next day is when the shark is caught and Hooper makes a comment about the shark's digestive system being very slow and anything he's eaten within the last 24 hours would probably still be in there. From the earlier scene it would make it 48 hours since the Kintner boy was killed.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper climbs into the cage he is not wearing fins, yet when he is lowered in the cage, in the very first shot underwater, he is wearing fins. In the following shots he is not wearing fins, but after the shark destroys the cage and he swims to the bottom of the ocean, he is wearing fins once again.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When Quint hears the clicking fishing reel, he puts on the harness and slowly lifts the rod. At the start of the shot facing the reel, a crew member's hand and the top of his head are reflected in the circular chrome.

Mistake Continuity: At the harbor, just as Brody asks, "Help me get those guys out of the boat, will you?" in the wideshot there are five men standing on the dock and three standing in the boat. Then in the next close-up, there are four on the dock and four in the boat. The one in a black/white check shirt is now at the end of the dock and the one in a black rain slicker, that was standing on the dock, is now suddenly standing in the boat below, at its stern.

Mistake Revealing: When the shark takes the fishermen's bait, the attached chain pulls one corner piling at the corner of the small dock. When the dock gives way in the wide shot, another line around the second corner piling visibly pulls it as well, in order for the dock to break apart effectively for the stunt.

Mistake Revealing: At the boathouse, when Hooper cuts open the Tiger shark, this shark is very noticeably different, including its recognizable seams, than the one hanging on the dock earlier.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: Just after the shark's first surprise attack on Hooper's cage, bright blue equipment is visible just past the cage, as the shark swims away.

Mistake Continuity: The damage to the bars of the cage and the top canister changes, and is quite different once Quint and Brody hoist it up.

Mistake Continuity: As the shark pulls on the lines tied to the stern cleats, the boat tips to the side and in the wideshot the emblem on one of the air tanks faces the side. Yet, in the next close-up as they hit the ladder, both face front.

Mistake Continuity: At Quint's place, he lifts two shark jaws out of the boiling water on the stove, in the close-up. In the next wideshot, the two jaws are positioned differently within the tongs Quint holds.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody and Hooper first arrive at Quint's place, Quint goes to pour the drinks, and beside him are windows with shades. There is a fish that hangs over the window beside Brody and the window upstairs, above Quint, is open. In the following shots positions of the roll shades, towels, etc., differ. Then when Quint climbs the ladder a bunch of rope now hangs beside the mirror, there is a small net that hangs with the fish above the window, and the window upstairs is now closed.

Mistake Revealing: Towards the end of the movie, when Quint is practically bitten in half, the mechanical shark's rubber teeth bend as it bites down, and they also bend when the shark bites down on the tank.

Mistake Revealing: After Hooper's comment, "He's working his way up to us," Quint rushes to the stern and shoots another line into the shark. In a very tight close-up of the shark's gills it is very apparent that they are just wide carved ridges, with no slits whatsoever, to even attempt to give the illusion that they are real, like in other great shots of Bruce.

Mistake Continuity: Just after Hooper remarks, "Fast fish," as they chase the shark, there is a close-up of Brody leaning over the starboard side of the boat, beside the boat's wake. However, in the previous and following wideshots Brody is at the port side of the boat, as it speeds after the shark. Neither are flipped shots.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint is telling Brody and Hooper about his body loses during the past, he pulls out a partial denture. In the final scene on the Orca, Quint is shown without this denture, but when he is being eaten by the shark and screams in pain, his teeth are complete again.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: During Chrissie's attack, she clings to the buoy and cries, "Oh my God! Oh God!" In the next shot, as she is pulled away from the buoy, a wire (at about the height of the bell) that shimmers in the moonlight and bounces up and down with the buoy, runs from the buoy towards the right of the screen. It is not visible in any other shot.

Mistake Continuity: After Hooper pulls the tooth from the hull of the boat, in the shot just as Ben first pops out, the knife Hooper holds has a protective sheath on the blade, yet in the previous and following shots the pointy serrated blade is not covered.

Mistake Other: When Hooper sees the hole in the hull of Ben Gardner's boat, he uses his knife to pry out the shark tooth. The tooth is located at the bottom of the hole, with its flat root side stuck deep in the wood and its pointy side facing up. It is completely impossible for the shark's tooth to become wedged in the wood this way, while he takes a nice bite out of the wood hull.

Mistake Continuity: When Chrissie goes swimming at the start of the film, we see the moon in the distance. However, when we see Chrissie from the shark's point of view under the water, the moon is directly above Chrissie.

Mistake Continuity: During the scene where Quint, Hooper and Chief Brody are in the cabin at night and Quint tells the story of the USS Indianapolis, he puts his cap on the table, seconds later is disappears then later reappears.

Mistake Continuity: Quint slams the machete into the wood beside the side cleat, and rigging lines. However, when the shark joins them aboard the boat and Quint is sliding towards its mouth, the machete's position changes - it is farther down towards the stern, note the black anti-slip mats.

Mistake Continuity: Just as the first cleat flies off the stern of Orca, the shape of the small metal hood differs and the entire wood rail at the top of the transom in this close-up differs from the rail in all other shots. The long wood rail has another small piece of wood attached at the end, forming an 'L' shape with a 90° angle, whereas in all other shots the rail is one long solitary piece.

Mistake Continuity: After wrapping the lines round the stern cleats, Quint yells, "Stand away from those stern cleats!" In the wideshot Quint stands at the wheel on the bridge deck, facing the bow, but in the next close-up he stands beside the foremast, below the crow's nest, facing the stern.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark swims away with the roast bait, a dramatic close-up of the quickly unfurling thick link chain lying on the dock is shown beside the trashcan. The unmoving end of the chain lies behind, to the left of the trashcan and the end being pulled is on the right, with the slack at the center. Now when the chain is pulled taught in the following shots, the trashcan should have flipped over, if the slack chain was indeed where it was shown to be in the close-up. In the wide shots the trashcan sits on the left at the center of the dock, but the chain being pulled is attached to the piling at the right corner end of the dock.

Mistake Continuity: After Quint receives the rope burn on his hand, the shark creates a huge splash wetting Quint and Hooper. In the following shots the wetness of their clothes and hair varies greatly, particularly Quint.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper removes the pump from the locker, in the close-up Quint takes the pump with his empty hands and gives it to Brody with both hands. However, in the wideshot he is holding the machete in his left hand, as he gives Brody the pump.

Mistake Continuity: While Brody and Hooper are at Quint's, just as Quint says, "And don't forget the color TV," the six small shark jaws hanging on the far wall, beside the window to Brody's left, are visible. However, when Hooper ties the sheepshank knot, there are only three small shark jaws beside that same window, near the stove.

Mistake Continuity: When Mayor Vaughn, Hendricks and the others join Brody on the ferry, as they reach the other side of the harbor the coroner's front leans on the car, as he faces the Mayor and Brody. However, in the next shot the coroner's back now leans on the car, as he faces the opposite way.

Mistake Continuity: The chum markers, with the yellow flags, disappear and reappear on deck, in consecutive shots within the same scene. For instance, in the wideshot when Quint, Brody and Hooper are splashed and Quint shouts, "Untie us! He'll pull out the transom!" they are gone, but are back in the next shot of the deck. They keep changing positions as well.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: Aboard the Orca, Brody accidentally causes the cage bars to fall over, and as both air tanks roll forward the multiple head set lights are reflected on the two tanks.

Mistake Continuity: When Ellen speaks with Brody at the beach, while worrying about the shark, Michael and other kids get up, and head toward the water. In the next shot, Michael, who wears very distinctive green and orange swimming trunks, jumps into the water (holding a football), and gets his hair and body entirely soaked. Next three shots Harry (and his 'bad hat') sits down and speaks with Brody. In the next shot Michael, with dry hair, passes Mrs. Kintner and is still running towards the water with Sean.

Mistake Continuity: The positions of the harpoons - two at the dorsal fin and one under the mouth - change on the shark's body and are actually gone in quite a few shots.

Mistake Continuity: While Quint leads the shark into the shallows, Brody asks, "Have you ever had a Great White do this?" and Hooper is beside the foremast holding one of the rungs, directly under the crow's nest. However, in the next shot, he stands at the edge of the bridge deck, beside the rigging.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark is boarding the boat, Quint and Brody are on their backs in the cabin beside the table. It is clearly visible that they are lying on the very solid floor with the hatches in perfect condition, despite the visibly massive damage to the floor and hatch when the engine room exploded.

Mistake Revealing: As the shark pushes his face into Hooper's cage, in a very nice close-up of the underside of his pectoral fin the large amount of peeled paint is quite visible, as it is in other shots of other areas of his body. Then in another shot at the same angle, just before Hooper escapes the cage, the paint job is perfect. In some other close-ups the shark's outer flesh creases deeply, because of its hollow interior, when pushed up against other surfaces.

Mistake Continuity: In the close-up of the stern cleat as the shark pulls on the line, there are two large metal 'L' shape brackets screwed onto the corner of the wood of transom. Amazingly, these large brackets are not screwed into the wood in the close-up, as Brody winds the line round the cleat just a moment earlier. The metal brackets repeatedly appear and disappear.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody tries to hail the Coast Guard, Quint smashes the radio and the stove area beside them is visible. When the shark re-appears Quint heads for the stern, and the stove area, which is visible as he walks, is completely different.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After Quint smashes up the radio, the shark re-appears. In the shot of Quint, as he walks along the side of the boat, the clear reflection of the filming crew's vessel is visible in the nearest window.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint is wearing the bandana round his head, the design showing and thickness of the bandana keeps changing in consecutive shots.

Mistake Continuity: After Alex's attack, there is a close-up of the $3,000 reward sign pinned to the board, as the woman complains, "We won't have any of our regular customers..." in the next shot as she continues to say, "We don't even know that there's a shark around here..." the reward sign on the board has different handwriting and is positioned differently on the board.

Mistake Continuity: When Chief Brody asks, "How many guys you gonna put on that boat?" he stands between two adjacent pilings. Hooper then stands beside the same two pilings in the following wide shots. However, in the close-up when Hooper asks about a good restaurant on the island, he is at the center of the shot standing beside only one lone piling. Richard Dreyfus' beard is also fuller in the close-up, than in the wide shots.

Mistake Audio problem: While Chrissie is being attacked at the start of the film, when her mouth is visible it is not in sync with her screams.

Mistake Continuity: While Brody starts to chum, Quint goes to the cabin to sit and work on the fishing reel, and the portable stove is visible to his right. Then when Quint speaks with Amity Point light station the pots, kettle, etc., on the stovetop are positioned differently and now there is an additional white pot. The hanging net has fewer things too.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When Quint has decided to lead the shark back toward shore, after Quint pushes Hooper away when he tells him to shut up, Hooper tells Brody to hold on. In the next shot showing the three men, with the barrels in pursuit behind them, Quint moves toward the left of the screen and the line pulling the three barrels is clearly seen in the boat's wake behind it.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody starts chumming, the stern of the Orca is bloody and the white container is dirty and bloody. When he and Quint watch the shark coming towards them, the container is much cleaner and the pattern of blood on the boat, at the stern, differs.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper runs below deck to get the homing device, life jackets hang on top of the rope, to the left of the machete. When Quint gets the machete there are no life jackets near it and when the engine hatch blows up, life jackets hang against the wall where the machete was. The life jackets near the fire extinguishers change position as well.

Mistake Revealing: When Hooper pulls the tooth from the hull of Ben Gardner's boat, he wears his watch and ring on his left wrist and hand. However, in the close-up as he drops the flashlight, knife and tooth, he wears them on his right side. Flipped shot.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper asks Quint about being on the Indianapolis, both of his shirt buttons are unfastened. When Quint answers & starts telling the Indianapolis story, Hooper's bottom button is fastened.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After tying off the cleats, the shark pulls Orca causing it to tip. As Hooper and Brody fall backwards onto the deck, in this close-up the white tape mark is visible on the black anti-slip mat - where Quint will land the machete in a subsequent shot.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody fires the last shot at the air tank, in the next close-up of the shark, the tank lies parallel to its body deep within its mouth, with only the base of the tank visible between its teeth. However, in the next wide shot, the tank lies perpendicularly in its mouth, with the pressure knobs at its right.

Mistake Continuity: After Brody says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat," he and Quint step out on deck and stare beyond the port side. However, in the next shot from behind them, they face starboard side as the shark swims nearer, but when Quint says, "Shut off that engine," they face port side again, with a close-up of Hooper looking port side as well. Then finally Quint follows as the shark passes from starboard to port side.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: Just after the two barrels pop up, Hooper comes down from the bridge deck and quips, "Now what?" In the next shot as the two barrels bob up and down, Orca is in the distance with Quint up on the bridge deck and Hooper and Brody on deck at the stern - someone else is moving in the cabin, beside the hanging net.

Mistake Continuity: After the shark leaves with Quint, Brody is in the flooded cabin as the boat starts to tip and the stove is behind him. The large metal side panels are fitted in the grooves between the lid and base. However, when the shark crashes through the window the panels are gone and the lid to the stove is closed.

Mistake Continuity: During the shark's attack on Orca, the tall, large steam pipe clamped to the wall, beside the bridge deck ladder, actually differs from the steam pipe seen in previous shots.

Mistake Continuity: The damage to Orca's stern changes back and forth, between shots. For instance, when the shark first comes aboard the entire transom is torn off, splitting the deck and side rails. Yet, just before the air tank rolls onto Quint's hands, part of the transom is back and the deck rail is whole again.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: While Hooper is below in the cage, he sees the shark nearing and up on deck as the barrels speed closer, the black triangular device attached to their lines is clearly visible, right in front of the barrels. The device pulls the barrels, not the shark.

Mistake Continuity: Just after Brody flips through the pages of the graphic shark book, Ellen tells him that Michael is sitting in his boat and outside their window the sun is just above the horizon, showing a pretty sunset. Then when Brody rushes to the door to shout for Michael to get out of the boat, amusingly enough the sun is now much, much higher in the sky.

Mistake Continuity: Aboard Orca, right beside the yellow barrels on deck, there is something large that is wrapped with green tarp and rope going round it. The tarp and the rope change significantly between consecutive shots throughout their hunt.

Mistake Continuity: When the fishing reel clicks, Quint readies himself in his chair and Brody is finally successful with the knot. The knot in the rope, and the way he holds it, differs between the close-up and wideshot.

Mistake Revealing: When Brody tries to hail the Coast Guard, just as Quint smashes the radio, the reflection in the center window is of the three windows on the opposite side of the cabin. Though the two side windows being reflected are normal, the entire center window being reflected is blacked out, reason being that the camera filming this shot is positioned in front of that window and in order not to see the outline of the camera, the center window directly behind it was covered. In the previous and following shots obviously there is nothing blocking that window. Similarly, this occurs when Quint speaks with the Coast Guard.

Mistake Continuity: When Mrs. Kintner confronts Chief Brody on the dock, in the shots facing her the veil blows away from her face, but in the shots facing Brody, the veil blows towards her face.

Mistake Continuity: As Quint lies to Ellen Brody on the radio and yammers that they caught a couple of stripers, the window above the portable stove in the cabin is spotless. However, a moment later when Hooper is on his way to get to the homing device, there is an interior view as he walks along the side of the boat outside. In this shot there are scraped blotchy remnants of a large rectangle sticker on that same window, above the stove.

Mistake Continuity: On the Fourth of July, Sean (the youngest Brody kid) is wearing a white t-shirt with orange around the collar, and green shorts. But after Michael goes into shock and Sean is seen crying, he's suddenly wearing darker shorts and a plain white shirt with no orange. Later at the hospital, he has his orange and white shirt and green shorts on again.

Mistake Continuity: Chief Brody has a cigarette dangling from his lips as he famously tells Quint, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." In the overhead shot as the shark passes the stern, just below Quint, Brody flicks his cigarette towards the left of the screen. However, when Hooper leaps down the ladder Brody's cigarette is back in his mouth.

Mistake Continuity: When Chief Brody and Hooper tie the ropes to the stern cleats, Quint shoots a harpoon under the shark's mouth. When Hooper is in the shark cage, look at the shark's mouth when it passes by. There is no harpoon there.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint and Hooper show their scars and as Quint talks about the U.S.S. Indianapolis, the leftover food on the plate keeps changing between shots, as does the position of cutlery, etc. Hooper's position on the seat (note the window behind him) changes between shots as well.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: Hooper and Brody grab a couple of poles as the Orca pulls alongside the two floating barrels. When Quint says, "Watch those barrels, boys. Watch them," the crew's vessel is clearly reflected in the cabin's side glass window.

Mistake Continuity: In the famously later on added scene Ben Gardner's suddenly emerging head scares the hell out of Hooper the diver (as well as any viewer). What diminishes the effect is that the second close-up of the head looks nothing like the first, much creepier one.

Mistake Continuity: After the cleats are ripped off, the size, shape and characteristics of the exposed area of wood underneath significantly changes in some of the following shots.

Mistake Continuity: Near the end, when Quint is struggling to get away from the shark, the nearby cans on the deck change between shots.

Mistake Continuity: After Hooper and Quint come up from the engine room, there are grease stains all over the front and back of Hooper's blue sweatshirt, that disappear, reappear or keep changing throughout the following shots.

Mistake Continuity: After Brody says, "You're gonna need a bigger boat." he and Quint go out on deck and there is a long rope tying the open cabin door to the rigging at the rail. However, when Hooper jumps down from the bridge deck the rope is gone.

Mistake Continuity: When Sean mimics his father, Brody's glasses are lying upright on the table. However, when Hooper sits down the glasses are upside down and other things on the table change position, etc.

Mistake Continuity: On the dock, as the Tiger shark is being raised there is an arrow above its gills, a second arrow below its dorsal fin and a broken arrow shaft in the wound just beside that dorsal fin. When Hooper tells the three fishermen that it's a Tiger shark, the broken arrow beside its dorsal fin is now a nice, long, whole arrow. All of the arrows change their degree of penetration in the shark's hide throughout these shots.

Mistake Continuity: The fire extinguisher in the cabin, between the door and window, changes from an older tank to a clean newer one. Note the label and condition of red tank when Hooper sticks his tongue out at Quint and later when Quint removes it to put out the fire in the engine room. The silver clasp holding the tank reverses itself and the black holder changes its position on the wall between shots as well.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When the bottom half of Quint's body is in the shark's mouth, Quint's fake belly shifts around where the shirt is open and the edge is also noticeable under his shirt.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint stops cranking to hoist up the cage, in the first shot the large canister is below the deck rail, but in the next shot the canister is well above the rail, right beside Brody.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: While the shark's face is up close and personal in the cage with Hooper, the equipment under the shark is visible as the camera pans back and is visible again in following shots. In the shot just prior to Hooper swimming away the device is quite clear.

Mistake Continuity: There are two buttons on each of Quint's shirt cuffs. When Quint pokes his head out as he works in the engine room, one button is closed on his right cuff. When he gathers the rope in hands, just as the shark surprises him, he has two buttons closed, then as the rope is pulled from his hands only one button closed.

Mistake Continuity: When the barrel pops up at the stern of Orca, Hooper grabs the boat hook and reaches for the barrel. In the side shot the barrel faces Hooper's right and the homing device is at the top, in the back shot the homing device is gone and in the third front shot the barrel faces Hooper's left.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: Just before the barrel smashes the cabin window, as Quint shouts, "Untie us! He'll pull out the transom!" the reflection of the crew's swaying vessel is visible in the window of the cabin, behind Hooper.

Mistake Audio problem: As the shark is towing the Orca, Hooper, Brody and Quint are at the stern cleats with the water splashing up in their faces. Their shouting does not match their mouth movements. Particularly when Hooper shouts, "It's impossible! It's impossible!" he is sticking his tongue way out, making it rather difficult to shout anything at all.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper runs below deck to get the electronic homing device, in the wideshot he breaks apart the plastic case, throwing the clear top to one side and the yellow bottom to the other side. However in the next close-up the plastic case is suddenly intact, right below Hooper's hands. The yellow cord is in Hooper's hand in the wideshots, but not in the close-up.

Mistake Continuity: As the tanks of compressed air roll towards Hooper, the large silver cage canisters near the ladder are visible. When Hooper carries a tank to the cabin saying, "You screw around with these tanks and they're gonna blow up," there is a long grey cloth (scarf?) lying on one of the canisters.

Mistake Factual error: In the scene when Brody and his deputy, Hendricks, are at the boat dock watching all the fishermen get into their boats, there are many shots when you see the town behind them. If you'll notice, there are no leaves on any of the trees, suggesting that it may be autumn. The events in the movie are supposed to occur during the 4th of July holiday. This mistake is also repeated when the mother of the boy comes to the dock and slaps Brody.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint and co. are tracking the shark, they use harpoons tied to barrels to tire the shark. When the shark is approaching Brody, who sits on the foremast waiting to shoot it, the surface of the water is visible behind it and the barrels are gone in two shots. The barrels are also gone when the shark blows up.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper measures the Tiger shark's mouth, the people standing around him change between the close-up and the previous and following wideshots.

Mistake Continuity: As Quint and Hooper drink to their legs, Brody lifts his sweater to see his own scar. Beside the portable stove, to Brody's left, there are four canned goods behind the green canisters of gas. Just after the shark starts to ram into the boat, there is a close-up of the stove, but now there are only two canned goods, a cup appears, and other changes in position, eg the liquor.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where the shark eats the guy in the red boat in the pond, Brody grabs a red blanket and goes for a brown blanket after exclaiming, "He's in shock," in reference to his son's close encounter with the shark. In the next shot, his wife is laying down blue and brown blankets over Michael.

Mistake Continuity: After the two barrels are tied off, there is at least twenty feet of line between the barrels and where it disappears into the water. When the next harpoon is shot (the barrel shatters the cabin window) and the shark pulls Orca, that last barrel trails way ahead of Orca, its taught line being extremely shorter than the lines leading to the two other barrels, though the shark pulls them at the same time. However, once the cleats break off, the length of the three lines are identical in length.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When the three guys first see the shark, it shows a shot of the shark swimming past and there are shadows of equipment and about three crew members just watching the action. It's not eqiupment from the Orca because nothing is there that looks similar to this shadow.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody helps the boys pull Michael out of the water his uniform is soaked - much, much wetter than it should have been. In the next shot only the bottom of his pant legs are wet, and in the following shot the wetness of his uniform differs again.

Mistake Continuity: As the shark bursts through the port side windows, the remaining port side wall and window frame around it keeps changing between shots - from an entirely broken frame to a partial intact frame, and so forth.

Mistake Continuity: At Orca's bow, the hole in the steel hull beside its number, is oval shape. However, after Quint is gone, when the ship begins to sink, and later when Hooper surfaces beside the wreckage of the bow, the shape of the hole in the steel hull is completely different! The white water stain lines change throughout the shots as well.

Mistake Continuity: After Hooper says, "Oh boys, I think he's come back for his noon feeding," when Quint rushes to the pulpit one of the iron rail bars around the pulpit is bent, but in the following shots it is straight again.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After hoisting up the damaged cage, when Quint walks over to stand beside Brody in the close-up the reflection of a male crew member's head is visible in the window, behind the ladder, until Brody lets go of the line. The crew's moving shadow is also visible under the cabin window, just after Quint passes it.

Mistake Continuity: The position of Brody's gun holster, along the wide belt changes between shots, when he tries to hold on to Quint's hand. This occurs in other shots as well.

Mistake Continuity: As Hooper climbs into the cage, in the wideshot the regulator hangs down in front of him. However, in the next overhead shot the hose lies across his chest, with the regulator thrown over his shoulder.

Mistake Continuity: The chunk of dock that floats in the water, as the shark pulls it, differs from the piece of dock that broke off in the previous shots.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark enters the Estuary, he passes Sean playing on the sand. After the attack Michael is pulled ashore and there is a close-up of Sean crying. Behind Sean the orange and white stripe cabanas are visible. However, there are no cabanas at the shores of the pond; these cabanas are located at the main beach area. The footage of Sean, with the cabanas behind him, is from the earlier scene of Alex's attack.

Mistake Continuity: When the 'shark fin' (boys playing a trick) approaches a woman she shouts, "My God!" and turns to swim towards the family with three children on a yellow raft, surrounded by other swimmers. In the next shot of a man's reaction, he too swims towards the very same family, but this time the children are in different order and no others surround them.

Mistake Continuity: While Brody and Quint are talking in the cabin, just after Hooper sticks his tongue out at Quint, the books on the shelf are fallen over on their sides. However, in the next shot when Quint walks out on deck, the books are visible behind him and now they're upright.

Mistake Continuity: When the two old fishermen are fishing for the shark from the pier, the shark takes the bait and you can see the chain getting pulled into the sea. In the next shot you can still hear the chain being pulled into the sea but if you look on the pier, you can't see any chain being dragged in and the wooden post that the chain is secured to changes into a different position.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: In the scene after the shark has pulled out the stern cleats and the three men are kneeling down in the boat; look at the window of the cabin door of the Orca, and you can see the crew on a separate boat being reflected in the glass.

Mistake Continuity: After Brody throws down the pump, the shark causes the boat to tip. In the following close-up of Quint's hand, the black and red painted gauge panel behind the wheel is visible. The peeled paint, or lack of, on the ledge going round the bridge deck, and on the steering and throttle controls panel, differs greatly in most of the shots of the bridge deck.

Mistake Continuity: As the Mayor walks over to the couple on the beach, to persuade them to go into the water, the back of the woman's lounge chair is visible. In the following shot from behind, as they stand up, suddenly a yellow towel is leaning over the back of her chair.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint stands beside the stove at his place, the stove is positioned a particular way in front of the wall. When he gives Hooper the rope, the stove is farther down against the wall and the wall behind the stove differs (note the panels), as do the roll shades on these windows.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: After spotting the shark, which Quint declares is a twenty five footer, Brody asks, "How do we handle this?" and the crew's swaying vessel is visible in the reflection on the starboard windows.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where Quint shoots the shark with a harpoon gun, when the harpoon hits the shark you can see the shadow of the cameraman.

Mistake Continuity: While Quint slides towards the shark and subsequently munches on him, then leaves, the articles and debris on the deck noticeably change between shots, regardless of the water splashing about.

Mistake Continuity: While Brody is in the flooded cabin, before the shark joins him, in the shots facing the aft cabin wall a few things are very different. The wood paneling on the entire wall, the porthole window beside the door, the ceiling and the black fire extinguisher holder all differ, and the round fixture that was screwed into the wall is gone. Also, visible through the window, the permanent ladder is positioned differently and things hanging in front of the window differ from the previous shot.

Mistake Continuity: The man speaking to Brody on the beach, while Brody is preoccupied with staring at the water, has salt and pepper colored hair, but in the close-up shots facing Brody the man's hair very noticeably differs, as well as his upper body structure and tan.

Mistake Continuity: While Quint makes his offer at the town meeting, when he says, "I don't want no volunteers, no mates...," the chalkboard is beside him in this close-up. The doodle of the shark on the board, and the actual wood grain of the chalkboard frame all differ from the previous shots.

Mistake Continuity: After Quint scrapes the chalkboard with his nails, in a close-up when he says, "Gonna stay alive and ante up, or gonna play it cheap," the papers pinned to the bulletin board are visible in the room behind him, as well as the chair, etc. In Quint's next close-up, the papers differ with additional pink and blue sheets and the chair is now at the other end of the board.

Mistake Continuity: Quint remarks, "Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him." In the shot of Orca's stern, just prior to this comment, the two attached yellow barrels are very worn, with many black marks all over. Yet, in the shot right after, both yellow barrels are almost entirely yellow - quick paint job. Throughout the Orca scenes the marks on all the barrels change many times in consecutive shots.

Mistake Continuity: When Michael and his two friends are sitting in their boat, in the pond, in the first close-up they sit on the white wrinkled up sail, but in the next wideshot two of them sit on the spread out blue tarp.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint finishes off his beer and squeezes the can with his hand, Hooper's equipment is visible just behind Quint. Then Brody accidentally unties the cage bars. When he falls back into Hooper's equipment, now it is closer to the door and the lines securing them are entirely different.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody boards the Orca, as Quint shouts, "Daylights wasting," the other docked boats along the surrounding shoreline are visible; for example, right across the docked Orca is a yellow boat pinning a white boat between it and the shore. When Orca gets underway, the yellow boat now pins a red boat between it and the shore, and in the close-up of Brody at the stern, there is a small white boat to his left that disappears in the next wideshot.

Mistake Continuity: While Hooper and Brody speak with Quint at his place, Quint tosses a large duffel at Hooper. In the shot looking up, the opening of the bag faces Quint, when it is inches away from Hooper's hands. However, in the next overhead shot as Hooper catches it, the duffel now faces the opposite direction.

Mistake Continuity: After Quint states that it's a 25-footer, he rushes below deck and when he comes up with the harpoon case, the gauges on the panel to his left are visible. When he answers the call from Amity Point light station, there is a new large black knob attached the corner of the panel, that was not there before. The paper mess at the top of the panel differs as well.

Mistake Factual error: When the shark is attacking Quint, the boat etc., his eyes do not roll back. Great White sharks roll their eyes back when they attack. Sharks that don't roll their eyes back have protective eyelids, but the shark doesn't close its eyes either.

Mistake Continuity: In one of Richard Dreyfus' first scenes, Brody asks him to help with the group of men crowding into a small boat. Hooper says that the officer wants him to tell them that they're overcrowding the boat. They show the men climbing in and there's a guy in a blue jacket climbing down the ladder into the boat. He waves his arm and says "what do you care?" They then show Hooper asking if they know a good restaurant or hotel on the island. When they show the men again, uttering the line "Yeah, walk straight ahead," the man in the blue jacket is on the deck again and is again descending down the ladder.

Mistake Continuity: There are long poles and large hooks clipped to both the starboard and port side of Orca. In quite a few shots all three poles are gone from either side, and in other shots the amount of poles and hooks and their positions change repeatedly over and over again, in consecutive shots throughout their hunt!

Mistake Continuity: When Brody is in the flooded cabin as it tips, at the start of the shot where the shark makes its smashing entrance, we actually hear Brody's loud footsteps on wood, as we see his waist and legs run from aft to forward in the cabin; though in the previous shots Brody is more than waist level in the water, already standing towards the bow.

Mistake Revealing: After Hooper delays Quint's shot of the very first harpoon into the shark, he finally shoots and hits the right side of the shark's dorsal fin. Problem is that in this particular shot there is another harpoon already on the left side of the shark's dorsal fin! This is the exact same shot seen later in the film, after Quint shouts, "Run him down Hooper!"

Mistake Continuity: Throughout the film, there are abrupt changes concerning the position of the sun's shadow, or going from being windy to not, or being overcast to bright and sunny, or where the water is either at a dead calm or pretty rough, all between consecutive shots within a scene.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper and Brody tie off the stern cleats, the amount of line, and the way the lines are wound round the cleats, varies in the following shots.

Mistake Continuity: The position of the people while they sit or lie on the beach, before Alex is attacked, changes back and forth between shots throughout this scene.

Mistake Continuity: On the dock, Charlie and Denherder wrap a link chain around the corner piling, which is yanked when the shark takes the roast bait. In the close-up the chain is pulled taught from the front and breaks free, but in the next wide shot the chain is slack and being pulled from behind the links around the piling.

Mistake Continuity: After the first barrel pops up, Hooper and Quint gather up the rope while at the stern. The existence of rope in each of their hands changes abruptly between shots. Particularly when Quint holds the rope only in his left hand in the wide shot, but in the next dramatic close-up as it leaves a rope burn, he grips it in both hands.

Mistake Continuity: In his bedroom, when Chief Brody asks, "How come the sun didn't used to shine in here?" the ashtray and lamp are visible beside Ellen. In the following shots the ashtray and lamp's electrical cord noticeably keep changing positions. When he walks out of the bedroom, something (mug?) appears on the desk near the window that wasn't there in the previous shot.

Mistake Continuity: After Hooper says, "Yeah, he's eating his way right up to us," Hooper and Brody shout for Quint. As Quint rushes to the stern, in the interior shot looking out the window the toolbox and books are in front of the window. When the barrel flies into that cabin window, smashing it, ALL the books are different, things are positioned differently and a thermos suddenly appears. But after the engine burnout, when Quint surveys the damage in the cabin, the books are same as the first shot and now they're actually upright.

Mistake Continuity: When the man swims away from the 'shark fin' towards the family, in the shot from behind he swims between the older girl and young boy. However, in the next shot facing him he swims between the older and younger girls, causing the raft to tip.

Mistake Continuity: Just as Quint shouts, "You may be a big yahoo in the lab, but out here you're just supercargo..." and when he asks Brody to unbuckle him, the cleat at the stern has plenty of line wound round it and there is a red cup beside it. However, in the previous and following consecutive shots within this scene, there is no line and no cup.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint shouts for Hooper and Brody to get their gloves on, in the wideshot Hooper starts to slip his left hand into his left glove. However, in the close-up, he just starts to put his right hand into the right glove.

Mistake Continuity: At Quint's, when he holds the two steaming shark jaws, assorted dry goods on the shelves above the stove are seen, particularly the cans of Del Monte vegetables. When Quint gives Hooper the rope to tie the knot, some of the goods on the bottom shelf and every can of veggies on the top shelf are entirely different.

Mistake Factual error: After the shark tries to attack Brody on Orca, it swims backwards out of the cabin, just as it does in other shots. No shark can swim backwards.

Mistake Continuity: On the Orca near the end of the film, there is a shot of Quint aiming the harpoon gun. In this shot the harpoon gun is high, but in next shot he is shooting from the hip.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Hooper visits Brody's home, he brings two bottles of wine. Brody pours himself a large measure, and then gives his wife and Hooper some. If you look at the bottle a) it seems rather full for the amount he's just poured, and b) the level changes from shot to shot. Sometimes it's above the label, sometimes below.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Hooper is measuring the bite radius of the Tiger shark, he puts his measuring tape away more than once.

Mistake Audio problem: When Charlie shouts, "Hey! He's takin' it! He's takin' it! He's takin' it!" his lips actually say something else.

Mistake Factual error: Shooting an oxygen tank (or even an air tank) would not cause it to explode, rather the tank would fly around like a rocket but it wouldn't blow up, no matter where the bullet hit.

Mistake Continuity: The zinc oxide on Brody's nose either appears or disappears between shots. When Brody pulls the wrong line causing the air tanks to roll, he falls back and there's zinc oxide on his nose, yet when he puts another chum marker in the water the zinc oxide is gone. Another example; when Brody says, "I can go slow ahead. Come on down and chum some of this sh*t," in a close-up there is no zinc oxide on his nose, yet when Quint remarks that it's a twenty five footer, suddenly he has zinc oxide on his nose. The amount of zinc oxide also changes between shots, when he wears it.

Mistake Continuity: As Orca heads out, first there is an interior shot that pans in through the large shark jaw framed window, showing the Orca a good distance away from Quint's place. However, in the next close-up of Brody, the Orca is just pulling away from shore.

Mistake Continuity: At his home, after Brody uncorks the bottle of wine he begins to peel the top label. In the following shots the top label changes, as well as the position of his hands, depending on camera angle as Hooper and Brody speak.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint slowly clips his harness to the fishing reel, the reel has a brushed chrome dull finish. However, in the previous and following shots, although the reel style is the same, the reel has a highly polished mirrored chrome finish.

Mistake Other: In the scene at the dinner table, when Brody's son is copying his movements, after Brody puts down his glass to cross his fingers, you see his son cross them before Brody does.

Mistake Continuity: The cleats are entirely different in many shots; they keeps changing from flat top, long, shiny silver with a wide base, to curved top, dull silver with a narrow base. When Brody unties the wrong line and when he wets the fishing reel it is the shiny flat top cleat on the transom. Yet, when he and Hooper tie off the lines the cleats are curved top. Also, the two metal plates and two metal hoods that are near the cleats repeatedly change from being very rusty, to not rusty at all.

Mistake Continuity: After the first shot of Hooper's shark dart falling, in the next shot of the shark swimming away, the cage top is wide open, yet in the previous shots and following close-up the top of the cage is closed, until Hooper actually opens it.

Mistake Continuity: While Brody watches the woman in the water, before Alex is attacked, there is a blue and yellow raft in the cabana behind him. In the close-up of his face, just before Harry's black capped head pops out of the water, the raft is gone. Then when Ellen massages Brody's neck the raft is back. The cooler and other assorted items change position between shots as well.

Mistake Audio problem: Alex asks his mom if he can still go in the water, and when she says, "Just ten more minutes," although it is a side shot of her face, it is easy to see that her mouth movements are not in sync with her words.

Mistake Continuity: Hooper runs into the very thick black-smoke filled cabin to go below deck, but in the next interior shot the entire cabin is bright and there is hardly any smoke anywhere.

Mistake Continuity: After Brody walks out of the store with sign supplies, Brody places the box, etc., in Hendricks' arms, with the points of the five wood stakes facing Hendricks' right side. In the next shot, when Brody drives away as Mayor Vaughn calls out to him, Hendricks walks over with his arms full, but all the stake points now face his left.

Mistake Continuity: After buying the sign supplies, Brody drives away and as the Mayor calls out to Brody, Hendricks walks over. In the first shot certain people are walking about; however, in the next shot as Hendricks and the Mayor speak, a boy suddenly appears standing in the crosswalk, the positions of signs, etc., differ, and of course the shadows cast are entirely different.

Mistake Continuity: When the Tiger shark is displayed on the docks, the blood stains in and around the mouth and its body, either change significantly between shots or completely disappear.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Brody blows up the shark, off in the background there is land in some shots and then no land in others. At one point, there is land about half way across the horizon, then there is land across the whole horizon, and then no land, it varies shot to shot.

Mistake Continuity: When the three men are in the cabin of the Orca at night, Quint is leaning forward against the table and is drinking something. In the next shot, as Chief Brody feels the cut on his forehead, Quint is turned towards the side leaning on the back of his seat, but in the next shot of Quint, he is leaning forward again in the same position as the first shot.

Mistake Continuity: At the end when Brody is up in the crow's nest of the Orca waiting for Bruce to get close enough for him to shoot the tank in Bruce's mouth, notice that the crow's nest is sinking much faster than Bruce is moving towards him. At these rates, the boat would have fully sunken before the shark got close enough.

Mistake Continuity: After Hooper cuts open the Tiger shark, when he throws a license plate towards the Chief the area to Brody's left is clear, but in the shot facing Brody there are lines and equipment lying on the ground beside him, to his left.

Mistake Continuity: In the council chambers, after the Mayor says, "Only 24 hrs," as the people argue in the wideshot a particular area of the chalkboard is visible behind them and it is blank. In the very next close-up Quint, who was not in the previous shot, scrapes the board with his nails, which now shows the large doodle of the shark, that should have also been visible in the previous shot, but was not.

Mistake Revealing: The ropes from the two barrels attached to 'Bruce' the shark are tied to the stern cleats, but then Bruce pulls on the ropes and starts to drag the boat sideways and nearly submerges the stern of the boat. As the boat is being pulled sideways by the ropes, they are both shown to have quite a bit of looseness, or slack in them. How can the boat be pulled like that if the ropes are not taut?

Mistake Continuity: When Brody waits to board the ferry he says, "Charlie, take me over to those kids, will ya," and on the base of the ferry 'Amity' is written in large, bold, black letters. However, when they reach the other ferry landing the word 'Amity' is gone. It is the same side of the ferry, note the ferry driver and the back end of the car.

Mistake Continuity: When the pump is given to Brody, Quint says, "Pump it out, Chief," and then Quint, with his long blue sleeves, thrusts his machete into the side of the boat. However, in the close-up Quint's arm has no sleeve whatsoever, as the machete meets the wood.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint gets bitten by the shark, he spits out blood. The blood on his face and chin noticeably changes in consecutive shots.

Mistake Factual error: When the woman is yelling that the shark is in the pond, it shows the shark's dorsal fin and tail fin sticking out of the water. The tail fin is moving straight. If the shark needs its tail to swim, wouldn't the tail fin be moving side to side?.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark is swimming towards the shark cage, it shows the three barrels above the water. If Quint shot them in different parts of the shark's body, they would be spread out and in different places, but the barrels are stuck together.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Chief Brody is staring at the water in his chair on the beach, before Alex is attacked, his watch is on his right hand, then suddenly the watch is gone.

Mistake Continuity: When Brody yells for everyone to get out of the water after Alex's attack, the position of all the adults and children as they run differ greatly depending on camera angle, regardless of the ensuing mayhem.

Mistake Continuity: The knots on the supporting rigging lines aboard Orca keep changing in consecutive shots, within the same scenes.

Mistake Continuity: At the hospital, when Ellen walks away carrying Sean, Brody turns to face the Mayor and the countertop of the nurses’ station is visible. In the next shot, a black ashtray suddenly appears on the counter as Brody walks over.

Mistake Continuity: The word ORCA on the back of the boat continually changes from shot to shot varying from very rusty letters to shiny letters.

Mistake Audio problem: When the old fisherman yells at his friend to swim faster and not to look back, his mouth movements aren't consistent with what he is saying.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint is shouting 'Stand away from those damn cleets,' he is holding a hand gripper on the orca's mast. Then he's near the controls, which is impossible in a split second: no human can move that fast.

Mistake Continuity: When the shark slams into the cage and makes Hooper drop his weapon, it shows the underside of the shark; look at the its mouth. When the shark is about to slam into the cage again its mouth isn't the same size as it was before. You can tell that they used a real shark when they showed the underside.

Mistake Continuity: During numerous close-ups on the bridge deck, such as when Brody is behind the wheel, as Hooper shouts, "Our injectors got scored from the salt water in the fuel," the three large gauges over the steering column are seen. The center gauge has a wide shiny chrome trim, and a partial black face with a silver center. However, in the extreme close-up of the gauge panel, it is an entirely different style RPM gauge, and it now has a blackish rusty trim, and a solid black face.

Mistake Other: In the scene in which the two men are fishing for the shark with the roast and inner tube, watch the amount of chain that is pulled off of the pier. Not only do numerous feet of chain go out but there are already many feet in the water connected to the tube. When the pier gets pulled into the water and the shark makes the turn to chase after Charlie, watch how close the pier is to him. With the amount of chain that was let out, the shark would have been well past Charlie and the shark probably would've beached itself.

Mistake Continuity: When Michael walks into the kitchen, he holds up his bloody hand and exclaims, "I got hit by a vampire!" In the next wideshot the blood on his raised palm differs.

Mistake Continuity: After the Orca breaks down for good, Hooper goes into the shark cage to try to kill the shark. The shark proceeds to completely trash the bars on one of the sides. After Hooper escapes to the sea bottom, the shark is attacking the top of the cage, but the bars are now intact. [Extra info: The scene with the bars intact actually shows a very real shark that got caught in the line(s) holding the intact cage. When they raised the cage it was still caught in the line(s). They inserted this footage after the scenes with Hooper and Bruce where the cage got trashed.]

Mistake Continuity: When the shark is harpooned to some rope, Brody & Hooper tie the rope to the stern cleats, causing the boat to be dragged backwards. Quint gets a machete to cut the rope to limit the boat's damage. At this point the sea is somewhat choppy. He throws the machete making it stick into the edge of the boat. The sea in the background is now completely calm.

Mistake Revealing: When Chief Brody starts shooting the shark, his cartridge is missing.

Mistake Continuity: Just before the Kintner boy is attacked, when Chief Brody is sitting on the beach watching the water, he speaks with the old man called Harry. In the close-up shot of Harry the chin strap of his rubber cap hangs down loose at his chest, but in the side shots the chin strap is tucked up at his ear (seen when Harry stands up).

Mistake Continuity: In a deleted scene, Quint walks into a music store to buy piano wire for his fishing reel. The woman behind the counter is giving a young customer a new clarinet reed and says, "It's a number three. It should be softer than the number two you had." Clarinet reed hardness is categorized with one being the softest and five being the hardest, so a three would be harder than a two.

Mistake Continuity: When Hooper is gutting the Tiger shark, the order of things he pulls out does not match the order that they land at Brody's feet, as Hooper throws them towards him, and some things just appear at Brody's feet.

Mistake Revealing: When the Orca is sinking and the shark smashes through the glass to get Brody, the mechanical shark's eyes are too obviously fake-looking in these close-ups.

Mistake Continuity: In Quint's final scene, just as the shark is thrashing him from side to side, the bandana headband slips off Quint's head. In the very next shot, when Quint is choking on his own blood, the headband is back on his head.

Mistake Other: During one of the shark scares at the beach, Chief Brody is running along the shoreline telling everyone to get out of the water. There are several frames where the Chief and a man with a moustache are at the water's edge. If you look closely you will notice that the man is laughing and other people laugh as well.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: In the absolutely brilliant boat scene towards the end of the film, there is a medium shot of the rear of the boat when Jaws comes right out of the water. If you look carefully under the shark model as it leaves the water, you can see the mechanical wheel they used to maneuver the model.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: While Quint tells of his experience with the U.S.S. Indianapolis, in the close-ups of Brody a crew member's arm with a watch is clearly visible moving in the reflection on the window, just behind Brody, particularly when Quint says, "Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: When Hooper has found Ben Gardener's head, he screams and drops the tooth and the light. Watch at the bottom of Ben's boat, a wire can be seen to anchor it down.

Mistake Continuity: When Quint falls down to the shark there is a shot that shows some legs, (they look like Brody's) slide down behind him. However, Brody is still up in the cabin in the next shot.
