Question: Can anyone please explain to me the deal about Nigel not getting a job in Paris? He thought he got promoted then Miranda picked someone else or something and he says something like 'when the time is right, she'll pay me back'. I've seen this film loads of times but I've never fully understood what happened. Thanks.
Answer: Nigel was going to be James Holt's partner But Miranda made it so Jacqueline got or instead so Miranda could remain Editor in Chief at Runway.
Question: After Andy left Runway, she got a job at the New York newspaper. But then she seemed to have made up with Nate, who is moving to Boston. Did she leave her job (again) to live with Nate?
Question: I have one question I'd like to ask other viewers. In the opening sequence at 01:48, is it just me or does that look a LOT like Anne Hathaway in a blonde wig? You might need slow motion to few this. The next shot is of the "real" Anne Hathaway kissing her boyfriend and it struck me that they look very similar. At 02:31 you see the blonde again and she somehow looks very different. What do you think? (00:01:45 - 00:02:30)
Answer: I have always thought the blonde woman in the opening credits in the boots who kisses her sleeping man was Anne Hathaway, and after pausing it, I STILL believe that is Anne Hathaway. Look at the mouth/lips. It's her. What I don't know is why it's her. A goof, just having some fun? Was she dressed like that for another scene and they just went with it. Either way, the blonde (Anne) who kissed her man is definitely not the woman dressed the same later in the same boots getting a taxi. That was a goof for sure.
Answer: I watched this scene several times, and my personal opinion is that the first shot of the blonde woman is not Anne Hathaway. The blonde actress in question appears to be the same woman, although the differing camera angles may make her look slightly different.
Question: At the end when Miranda smiles in her limo after dismissing Andi's wave, what does this mean? Is she secretly proud of Andi for leaving? Is there director's commentary on this? Also, Andi giggles at Miranda's dismissal. Is it because she knows Miranda endorsed her?
Answer: Miranda smiles because she is admitting to herself that she has come to like and respect Andi, who was unlike any assistant she'd ever had before. She did not want to let Andi see that. As she told Andi, she saw a lot of herself in her. Mirianda always is protecting her work image of being a powerful corporate leader, but once she is inside the taxi where Andi cannot see her, she lets her guard down. Andi smiles, as she often does, because she easily shrugs things off, but she can also see through Miranda's tough facade. Andi also appreciates that Miranda did support her.
Question: At the very beginning of the movie, there is a shot of Andrea's diary. On the calendar page, it says "ELIAS-CLARKE HUMAN RESOURCES" and next to it, "Get a card + Prez for Jill." Who the heck is Jill? The name of Andrea's girlfriend who works at a gallery is Lily, though.
Answer: Jill is actually Andy's sister, not mentioned or shown in the movie but she's in several chapters of the book.
Question: At the fashion show that's not in Paris, Miranda tells Herb, "no business tonight" then she is in his hotel room in Paris. Are they seeing each other?
Answer: They were not seeing each romantically. At the fashion event, Miranda had made a vague reference to Herb about the deal she'd made with him to have Jacqueline take the creative director position that Nigel was supposed to have with James Holt's new company. Herb had quickly changed the subject, which was when Miranda made that comment. Herb had been planning to oust Miranda from Runway and replace her with Jacqueline. Miranda had basically strong-armed Herb into the other deal by threatening to take the majority of Runway's writers, designers, models, photographers, etc. with her if she was forced out as editor.
Question: With all the talk about whether or not the book/movie is about the editor of Vogue, was the fact that Madonna's song "VOGUE" is heard in the film done on purpose or did the producers just pick the song because it sounded good?
Chosen answer: In the director's commentary they say that they picked Madonna because she is the "real sound of fashion" and "so inside of fashion. Vogue is obviously one of Madonna's greatest songs about fashion. The song's title was influenced by the magazine's name, but its use in the movie had more to do with Madonna than with the magazine.
Question: Why does Andy choose to leave Runway?
Answer: She realised she was becoming someone she didn't want to be. She used Emily to get ahead, and was sacrificing her friendships and personal relationships for her career and fashion. She didn't want to be like Miranda and realised she needed to pursue her true profession as a journalist.
Question: How did Miranda Priestly have the authority to assign any person to work with James Holt? Is she also managing the new James Holt company?
Answer: Miranda didn't assign anyone to work with Holt. She used her considerable power and leverage to essentially blackmail Irv Ravitz, who had planned to replace Miranda with Jacqueline Follet. When Miranda found out what Irv was intending to do, she showed him the list of all the designers, photographers, writers, etc. who had promised they would follow her should she ever leave Runway for another magazine. It would have been a huge blow to Runway if Miranda took those people with her. To compensate Follet, Miranda used her influence to get Jacqueline the position with James Holt's new company that was supposed to go to Nigel, though it's not explained exactly how she did that.
Chosen answer: Miranda was going to be replaced by Jaqueline and forced to retire. Miranda worked a deal to give Nigel's new job to Jaqueline instead. Since Jaqueline now has a job she wants, there is no one eager or qualified to replace Miranda. Miranda keeps her job. Nigel doesn't get a new job and must remain with Miranda. Miranda gets what she wants, Jaqueline gets what she wants, Nigel gets screwed, but maintains the (most likely futile) hope that Miranda will pay him back by some other means in due course.
