Grease (1978) - 61 mistakes

Revealing: In the soda shop, the waitress turns off the lights with her elbow because her hands are full, but she misses the light switch by 6 inches.

Continuity: At Frenchie's sleepover when they are talking about piercing Sandy's ears, it shows Sandy holding the wine bottle and passing it to Jan. Then it cuts back to Sandy and she is still holding the wine, then it cuts back to Jan and she has the wine again.

Audio problem: During "We go together" at the end of Grease, John Travolta's mouth is not in sync with the words.

Continuity: At the dance, there's a scene where everyone started dancing after Cha-Cha and Danny won the trophy. Well Marty comes in from the side of the screen and lands on the floor in some kind of split, and you can clearly see she is wearing knee pads.

Continuity: In the middle of the dance contest, Patty Simcox does a funny front walkover, and comes dancing towards the camera. Over her shoulder, you can see Sonny running up behind her. But suddenly it cuts to another angle, and someone else is running up behind her to lift up her dress, and Sonny is nowhere to be seen.

Continuity: In "We go together" they all dance forwards. When the camera changes angle Frenchy and Doody have switched sides.

Continuity: In the scene where the whole gang is eating at the soda shop, everybody starts leaving. Doody is in the back, in the middle, on the railing. He's getting ready to leave, takes a bite of his ice cream and sets it down. In the next shot, he sets it down again.

Factual error: When the Pink Ladies are walking Sandy into the outdoor cafeteria, just after she tells them the name of the boy she met last summer, all the cars in the background are from the 70's, not from the late 50's or early 60's. This actually happens twice in the same scene.

Continuity: When Kenickie is first shown, he has two charms on his necklace. One is a small square one, the other is a star inside a circle. The camera cuts to Zuko, then when it cuts back to Kenickie, the square charm is gone. It reappears in a couple of scenes later in the movie, then disappears again.

Continuity: Sandy walks over to meet the girls after doing a cartwheel. On Sandy's cheerleading uniform, there is a LONG red string right next to the letter on her shirt. Then, suddenly, the string disappears in the very next shot.

Continuity: There is a scene in which Danny falls over a hurdle. If you watch his falling frame by frame you will notice that only his right leg is stretched first. Then the camera angle changes and suddenly his left leg is stretched, while the right one is bent.

Visible crew/equipment: In the soda shop scene where Sandy and Danny are at the jukebox, the reflection of the boom mic is clearly visible in the chrome part of the jukebox.

Continuity: When "Crater Face" comes to the dance with Marty and Rizzo, he takes his sunglasses off twice.

Continuity: During the slumber party at Frenchie's, when Rizzo brings out the wine, check out the junk on the headboard. Later in the scene when Marty is putting on her robe, the headboard is clear and now has a black fan on the left. Then even later when Jan says "You ain't getting your hands on my ears" the headboard is cluttered again, with the black fan too.

Revealing: On the first day of school, when Patty is starting to sit down next to Sandy, her reaction to sitting on the apple is way too early.

Continuity: When Marty is talking to Vince Fontaine before the dance contest, towards the end of their conversation she starts to lift up her purse with her right hand. But suddenly it cuts to another angle, and her arm is down.

Other: In the scene where Sandie is at the shop with the jock, then she goes to the jukebox, the picture behind the jock is all blurred out. You can tell it is a Coke sign - obviously a clash of sponsors.

Other: When Sandy checks into school for the first time, she goes down to the office and the assistant principal gives her some forms to fill out. If you look closely, you'll be able to see that the top form is just a blank piece of paper.

Revealing: The TV set that is in the scene when Jan sings, "Brusha Brusha Brusha" is not the same TV that is shown when Rizzo is getting ready to go out the window during the slumber party.

Other: In the beginning credits, they spell Frenchie with an "ie" but at the end credits, they spell it with a "y".

Continuity: When the girls are all sitting in the outside cafeteria just before Patty Simcox comes over watch Marty. When Patty approaches she is lifting her fork to her mouth but when the shot changes she is holding out her hand to get Patty's card without having enough time to put her fork down in between.

Continuity: On the first day of school during lunch, at one point Frenchie has out a small compact and is checking for food in her teeth. But when it cuts to a wider angle, suddenly the compact is gone, and she's looking over her shoulder.

Continuity: At the start of the Rydell fight song at the dance, Patty is standing right at the front of the stage. One second later, she is at the back of the gym.

Continuity: During the dance off, Sandy and Danny are dancing in the center and everyone is watching them. Behind Sandy, Cha Cha walks out and puts her hands on her hips. Then, the camera does a close up of her doing this. So she actually walked out twice.

Continuity: Just at the beginning of the Hand Jive dance off, Patty and Marty are standing in front of the big float figure. The hat tips and paper falls on both of them. In the next shot, as Patty is crying, Marty is no longer there, but there are a couple of guys next to Patty attempting to fix it.

Continuity: At the dance-off, near the end of Cha-Cha and Danny's dance, they move from the back to the left side of the ring of people around them, and then in the next shot they're at the back of the ring.

Factual error: In the scene where Danny is talking to Sandy at the Frosty Palace, the jukebox behind them is a 1973 model, but the film takes place in 1959.

Other: The entire "Greased Lightning" number repeatedly goes in and out of focus.

Continuity: At the dance, when Frenchy insults Cha-Cha by saying, "With the worst reputation", Cha-Cha is shown (in the close-up) first looking at Kenickie, then turning her head around to give Frenchy a dirty look. In the next shot when Danny and Sandy are leaving the group, Cha-Cha is suddenly back at looking at Kenickie, then proceeds to give Frenchy the same dirty look again.

Continuity: After Danny has danced around the car with the saran wrap he is shown spinning around numerous times, and then stops with his back to the camera. However, in the very next shot, his arms are suddenly up in a pose far too quickly for him to have done in the time alloted.

Continuity: At the beginning of the National Bandstand scene you see people filling the hat of the big "Rydell Ranger" figure with pieces of paper. During the next ten minutes the figure is often visible in the background and the hat is empty - nobody emptied it. After those ten minutes the hat has paper again and is then emptied.

Continuity: During the sleepover, Rizzo gets off of the bed with a cigarette in one hand and the wine bottle in the other. In the next shot, the cigarette and the bottle have switched places.

Continuity: When Cha-Cha receives the award from Principal McGee at the end of "Born to Hand Jive" at the National Dance Off, Putzie is giving Jan a piggy-back next to the Principal. However, in the next scene, Putzie is giving Jan a piggy-back right next to Cha-Cha.

Continuity: There are red and white puffy paper decorations on each side of the door entering the gym for the dance-off. However, within a few seconds, the decorations on the left side completely disappear.

Continuity: When Danny is first shown at school, he is shown over Kinicki's shoulder speaking to a girl in a blue sweater. The immediate next shot, Danny is talking to a totally different girl in a purple sweater and a few other girls as well.

Continuity: In the Greased Lightning dance scene, look just in front of the last white desk on the right side during the dream car segment. One of the dancers knocks a tyre off a stand and it falls in front of the desk. A shot or two later, the tyre is back up on the stand.

Factual error: At the graduation carnival at the end of the movie, Danny enters wearing a letterman's sweater and explains to his buddies that he earned it by lettering in track. However, on his left sleeve are two stripes, indicating that he lettered in two separate years. Since you are only awarded a stripe for each year you letter, and since Danny was a senior when he lettered in track, his Rydell letterman's sweater should have had only one red stripe on his left arm.

Continuity: When Kenickie says to Rizzo in the soda parlour, "How about if I finish with you, huh?" there is a tomato ketchup squeezer on his side of the table. In the next scene when Rizzo says, "Finish this!" and throws the glass of cherry soda at Kenickie, the ketchup squeezer has moved to her side of the table, and in the next scene, when Kenickie is covered in soda, the ketchup squeezer is back in its normal position.

Continuity: When the three T-Birds go to moon at the TV camera at the National Dance Off, Doody says "1, 2, 3, go!" and pulls down his trousers to his ankles. In the next scene, his trousers are suddenly pulled right up to his buttocks.

Continuity: During the cafeteria scene in the beginning, Patty comes along and Frenchy rests her head on her left hand with her elbow on the table. The shot changes after Rizzo says "It's the biggest thrill of my life" and Frenchy's head is instantly no longer resting on her hand, and her elbow is off the table.

Continuity: At the dance when they do that partner dance down the middle of the gym, as the lines form Kenickie and Cha-Cha start dancing down it, then the next shot its another couple first down it, and then a couple of shots later Kenickie and Cha-Cha start going down the lines again.

Continuity: During the song Summer Lovin', Rizzo lies down on her side on a picnic bench and puts on sunglasses. In the next shot, when she kicks Sandy and another girl off the bench, the sunglasses are off. In the following shot, they are on again.

Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where they are singing Grease Lighting - the part when the fuzzy dice float to Kenickie - after he takes them "out of the air" and swings them around, then lets them fly - if you look close to his head you can see the white string they were attached to when they were "floating".

Continuity: When the waitress is cleaning off the table after the kids leave, the plates on her tray all appear to be empty. But Danny's and Sandy's plates are completely full when they leave, and no one touches their food. Kenickie takes one bite of a burger on a different plate, but not nearly enough to empty it.

Continuity: When Rizzo is lying on the bench, and kicks off Sandy and that other chick, Sandy is singing, however her mouth is not moving at all.

Continuity: In the scene where the whole gang meets at the diner, the waitress brings out Danny and Sandy's food, and you can see the drinks they have ordered are a dark pink colour. In the next shot that they appear, the drinks are a lot lighter shade, almost pale pink.

Other: This mistake occurs during the dance sequence 'You're the One that I Want.' John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John have just emerged from a 'Shake Shack' and are now ascending a ramp. For the lyrics ,Hoo hoo hoo... honey,' the camera zooms in close to their faces. You can see that the dance move is for the two actors to bob their heads close to each other's so that they nearly touch. They do it right the first time, but the second time they visibly mess up. John Travolta seems to try to fix his mistake, but Olivia Newton-John appears to crack up and leave the frame.

Continuity: Rizzo is singing the Sandra-Dee song in Frenchie's bedroom. When she sits at the desk, you can just see that the chest of drawers are all closed fully behind her. However, later in the song Rizzo jumps off the bed. As she passes, then sits back at the desk, the second drawer down is now partially open. No one goes near it during this time, as all the girls in this song are on the bed.

Continuity: The scene where Sandy and Danny are eating together, then the rest of the gang comes, Sonny walks Marty home. Right after the two leave, Sonny come up behind Frenchie, like he was in the bathroom or at the jukebox. Wasn't he walking Marty home?

Continuity: In the beginning animated sequence, when Rizzo takes off her top, the long neck in the mirror suddenly disappears altogether.

Continuity: In the song "There Are Worse Things I Could Do," between the lines "Out of spite or jealousy" and "I don't steal and I don't lie", Rizzo's hand jumps from the side of her book to the top of her book, near her face.

Continuity: Once during the dancing scene you can see Vince Fontaine standing on Marty's left side, and then suddenly on her right.

Visible crew/equipment: During the dream car dance sequence, look at the many wires guiding the engine as it is lowered into the car with Danny riding on it. Also, notice the size of the white hook and chain. In the next shot, when the engine is in place and the chain is going up, it is a much smaller hook and the chain jumps around like a plastic prop.

Continuity: When Sonny enters the sports hall for the National Dance Off, he twangs Chisum's braces and walks towards the bandstand. Chisum is well away from the doorway at this point. However, in the next scene, Chisum is now standing near the doorway and Sonny is walking away from the bandstand.

Continuity: Widescreen version: When Vince Fontaine introduces Johnny Casino & The Gamblers at the National Bandstand, Blanche is seen walking off the stage. In the next scene, she is on the stage, dancing with the band.

Continuity: In the pre-credits sequence, when Danny and Sandy on walking on the beach, Danny is on the left and Sandy is on the right. However, in the next scene, when they kiss, they have suddenly changed positions.

Continuity: During the dance, there's one song where the guys stand in one line and the girls in another, and the couples take turns walking down the middle. In one shot, Danny is placing Sandy in line, and a couple (the woman has a blue dress on) is already starting down the middle. Then it cuts to another angle and no one is in the middle. Back to the first angle, and people are in the middle again.

Continuity: When Jan is mimicking the Ipana squirrel on TV, she put her hand up to her mouth when she is singing, 'Brush-a Brush-a Brush-a', and pretending to brush her teeth. In the second half of the song, however, after the second line; 'New Ipana toothpaste', she has both her arms pointing in front of her making a 45 degree angle with her body, and her neck straight but in the next shot, which is at the beginning of the next line, 'Brush-a Brush-a Brush-a', she has one hand up to her mouth again and her head is pointed a little to the right. You might also notice that the time between those two lines is longer than it should be.

Audio problem: At the very beginning when they are singing "Summer Loving" Sandy sat at the top of the seating for the athletics track. The voice-over and Sandy's lip movements do not match.

Continuity: During the dance contest, when Kenickie and Cha-Cha are dancing around like crazy (when she puts her foot up on his shoulder), you can see Danny and Sandy in the background, standing on the sidelines. Given that they're the last couple on the floor at the end, they should still be out dancing at this point.

Continuity: At the end of the prep rally, after Sandy confronts Danny, she is leaning on a car crying. Frenchie comes up to Sandy to console her. Watch Sandy's head, in one shot her head is up then in the next it is down.
