Although the paper is based in London, the money in the envelope that Charles gives to Amy is American currency. [American money is more commonly accepted throughout Eastern Europe than British Pounds, or even the Euro. Some places will not even exchange other currencies than American for the local currency. Since she is traveling to Romania, her boss likely knows that American is much easier to exchange than any other currency, so gives her US dollars.]

In Russia for instance, even though businesses are required by law to take only rubles, most places will gladly accept US dollars.]
