Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Other mistake: When seen from inside the trash chute in the nut sorting room, the Oompa Loompas could not have leaned over the hole as far as they did. Other views during the same scene show they had to stay back a fair distance due to the curve in the floor. (01:15:05)

Continuity mistake: When the factory gates open for the contest winners, the shadows in the courtyard change between shots. [This is a reference to the first film in which the shadows shift a lot. It is also shown in other parodies of the original film, eg, the Family guy episode "Wasted talent". Still a valid mistake.]

Plot hole: In the end of the movie, when Willy Wonka decides to visit his father, his father does not recognize him until he looks at his "rare teeth." But the wall of newspaper printings that Charlie was looking at included a recent enough picture of Willy that the father would have definitely recognized him, before seeing his teeth, as Willy doesn't look like a normal person with that outfit.

Deliberate mistake: Charlie's room has a hole big enough for him to climb out of in the ceiling. I know it is to show just how poor the family is, but we see he has only a thin wool blanket for warmth. He would have frozen to death in his sleep during winter by now.

Grumpy Scot

Continuity mistake: When Mike Teavee has been sent by television, Wonka is pointing to the screen when the camera is showing outside the screen, but a split second later, when the camera is showing inside the screen, both of Wonka's hands are leaning on his cane.

AidanN

Visible crew/equipment: Throughout the movie, whenever somebody has glasses on, it is quite easy to see the crew in the reflection of the glasses. This is most obvious in the television room but is visible in other scenes too.

kristenlouise3

Factual error: In the intro the chocolate wrapper states that the bar weighs 7 oz net, yet the boxes the bars are packaged in says 150g. 7oz is approximately 200g. (00:03:00)

Other mistake: The name of the actor who played Mike is given during the opening credits as Jordan Fry and during the end credits as Jordon Fry. (00:01:55 - 01:44:30)

Continuity mistake: Just after Violet Beauregarde has been rolled away by the Oompa Loompas, Willy Wonka appears next to Mrs. Beauregarde and tells her how they've tried it on several Oompa Loompas, they all ended up as blueberries and that it's "really weird." When he finishes speaking he is smiling, and the camera immediately cuts to a shot of Wonka and Mrs. Beauregard from another angle, and he's not smiling anymore, with no time to change between shots.

Continuity mistake: The tire track of the rightmost truck (in the top-down shot) is completely wrong. All 5 of the trucks were parked parallel. Besides, we can see only one pair of tire tracks per truck, but when a truck turns, the path the front wheels move on has a larger radius than the one the back ones move on thus creating two tracks. All this was OK just a shot before. (00:04:00)

Continuity mistake: When Dr. Wilbur Wonka is checking Willy's teeth using the dental pick and mirror, the view from inside Willy's mouth shows Dr. Wonka holding the mirror differently in his left hand from the shots of his left hand outside Willy's mouth.

Scott215

Revealing mistake: At the beginning of the song about Mike Teavee, it can be seen that the reflection of the shrunken Mike on the glossy table is not actually his reflection but rather a mirrored and flipped version of the footage.

throast

Continuity mistake: The Chocolate Room features a chocolate fall, which had to be technically enlarged to fit the room. In one shot, right after the people enter the room, however, the chocolate fall is shown only being half of its actual size.

throast

Other mistake: In the Nut Room, there are doors on the left and the right side for the Oompa Loompas and squirrels to enter the room. During the song, the camera faces the front of these doors, where the viewer can see that the doors are cut off 2 feet in, making it impossible for anyone to enter or leave the room through them.

throast

Continuity mistake: In the scene where Violet and her mother are talking about the trophies, the trophies in the trophy cabinet behind them changes between the first shot and the second shot. (00:21:50)

Audio problem: In the scene where Veruca's Dad is explaining how she got the ticket, when the shot is pulled back, there is an echo. But when the camera is zoomed in, the echo is gone, as well as when Mr. Salt is talking and the camera is showing a flashback. (00:18:05)

Visible crew/equipment: In the Television Room, when Wonka is explaining how you will be home watching television, and a commercial pops up, and it wants you to try a Wonka bar (by reaching into the TV and getting it), you can see a cameraman standing behind the camera reflected in Wonka's glasses. It might be a little hard to see (try zooming in), but it's there. (01:27:40)

Continuity mistake: After Augustus shows his golden ticket he eats a second bar. His father is behind him, holding sausages at chest level. A shot later his arms are at waist level, without him having had time to lower them.

Sacha

Continuity mistake: In the beginning, where it is showing how the Wonka chocolate bars are made, we see trays holding twelve pieces of chocolate. When it shows the trays on the conveyor belt, each tray holds fourteen pieces of chocolate.

ryderpoints

Continuity mistake: In the scene when Agustus Gloop gets sucked into the chocolate tube, the inside of the tube is covered in chocolate. But in the far away shot, when you see the tube being retracted, it is perfectly clean inside and out.

Willy Wonka: Everything in this room is eatable. Even I'm eatable, but that is called canibalism, my dear children, and is in fact frowned upon in most societies.

Trivia: The many Oompa Loompas in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory are all played by the same man - Deep Roy. They used CGI to duplicate him. He would do a ton of different dance moves so when it's all put together, it would look like there were a bunch of different Oompa Loompas.

Question: If the Buckets were very poor, then why do they even have TV? Why don't they use the extra money for food?

Answer: The Buckets weren't always dead broke. The TV may have been purchased before they became impoverished.

Answer: TV is kind of a necessity. Here in the UK debt collectors can't take a TV if it's the only one in the house. Also, they can't afford newspapers so how would they catch up on news? The TV will last for a while whereas it would only buy a few days worth of food, so the TV is a more sustainable option.

Answer: In addition to the other answer about TV basically being a necessity, there's also the very real chance that they got the TV for dirt-cheap or even free somewhere. It looks like a crummy old antenna TV anyways. They often get old TV's in things like thrift stores or flea markets, etc. I actually specifically look for things like old TV's and VCR's in thrift store and find them a lot since I enjoy collecting old analog media and devices. Plus, given that the grandfather used to work for Wonka, it's entirely possible that he bought it in the past before the family became so poor.

TedStixon

Answer: Don't they have to pay for a monthly subscription? Isn't cable paid for every month?

This was based on the book, not the timeframe of the movie. There was no cable for TVs when the book was written OR in the 1971 original film. Yes, cable was available in 2005 at this film's time but that's not the logic here.
