At the beginning of the movie, Christina is applying to college and in her application essay, she looks back on her childhood (presumably 8-10 years prior). This recollection of her childhood is the premise of the movie. Even though this is set in the mid-nineties, all vehicles seen are current 2004-5 models. [The part at the beginning could have been set 8 to 10 years in the future.]
