Trivia
The mysterious new leader of the flying daggers never actually appears because that role was intended for actress/ singer Anita Mui, who resigned the (impending) filming due to ill health two weeks before dying of cancer. Out of respect Zhang Yimou didn't replace her with another actress and the film is dedicated to her memory. See more...
House of Flying Daggers (2004) - 12 mistakes
These mistakes are currently being ordered by time. Entries without times will appear at the end.
Continuity: In the bamboo forest fight scene, Jin and Mei are pinned down by the bamboo spears and they are surrounded by a field of bamboo stakes. But when all the soldiers that were sitting in the bamboo are shot down by the Flying Dagger members, the stakes suddenly all disappear, and then reappear after all the soldiers have landed.
Continuity: During the "Echo game", Jin throws the full bowl at the targets and all of the shells fall on the floor. Yet in all shots afterward, they are nowhere to be seen.
Continuity: During the last fight, Leo still has a dagger in his back that he is not allowed to remove. This dagger keeps disappearing and reappearing , not to mention that he keeps falling and rolling on his shoulders during the scene, where the dagger should be stuck.
Continuity: Right before the final battle, Leo hits Mei with a dagger to the chest. During the ensuing conversation she frequently goes from having a bloody mouth with red teeth, to having a clean mouth with no signs of blood on her teeth.
Revealing: When Jin is fighting in the prison, he kicks two guards into the walls of the stone hall. The one on the right of the screen hits the stone wall making it shake and a block move.
Continuity: During Mei's dance at the beginning of the film her dress slips down exposing her shoulder. There's one instant where the shot changes and her dress is back on her shoulder, then it changes back to closeup and it's off again.
Other: During the final fight scene between the two protagonists, there is a howling gale which blows snow sideways. yet it never ruffles the protagonists' hair.
Continuity: During the fight in the bamboo forest the soldiers throw many bamboo spears each, but they are never seen carrying more than one at a time. As they show in the movie, it takes a while to make these spears (cut down a stick, trim off the branches and sharpen it), so where did the extra spears come from?
Continuity: During the final fight scene between the two protagonists, the camera shots flick between POV of Leo looking up at Jin through two crossed swords, and then looking down past Jin at Leo through two parallel swords.
Continuity: There are two scenes in the forest in which Jin is riding away from Mei, but he stops to consider whether he should carry on or return to her. In both of these scenes you will notice that between shots the horse that he is on changes several times.
Factual error: In the scene where Mei is bathing in that small pool, you can see on her arm a the scar from her vaccination. As you might expect, they didn't have these vaccinations in the 1800s.
