The Day After Tomorrow

Factual error: Air descending cannot cause temperatures to reach a point where things freeze as fast as they do in the film. Firstly, the temperature of the upper troposphere is only -60° Fahrenheit. Secondly, air will warm as it descends no matter how fast it's descending, and the warming process will always prevent the air from getting cold enough to freeze things as fast as in in the movie.

Factual error: When the big wave comes, it's hitting New York harbor and the Statue of Liberty from the west. Possible I guess but unlikely due to the fact that the harbor just starts there; the west side of the harbor isn't the ocean side, it's New Jersey. Later, the people are standing in front of the library, which faces east and the wave is coming right at them. Then they show an overhead shot of the water overtaking the city and its coming from the south.

Suggested correction: The water is coming from the Atlantic. It probably already overcame parts of New Jersey and areas like Long Island and Brooklyn, but they just showed it entering the harbor. As far as it coming from the east, the water probably hit the island of Manhattan and the east river probably also started to rise which would eventually overtake the island as well coming towards the library from the east.

Factual error: Football matches shown on TV are never cut well into the 2nd half to be "welcomed back" at 63 mins. And no British commentator would say "Glasgow, Scotland"? In the UK we know Glasgow is in Scotland. He would say the stadium name - Celtic Park.

Other mistake: At the end when Jack walks into the room where everyone is and shines his flashlight around, you see the nerd and the rich kid with the librarian in the background. Then you see a girl next to Sam's girlfriend. Where did she come from?

Suggested correction: She's the girl who was arguing with the man about which books could and couldn't be burned before the boy finds the section on law to burn.

Continuity mistake: When the group of teenagers is viewing the destruction in Los Angeles, they are watching FOX 11. However, a few seconds later when one changes the channel to show the air traffic suspension, it is shown that they are watching FOX 5. (00:30:55)

Continuity mistake: When Sam and the others are walking in the rain toward the library, they are carrying backpacks or duffel bags, but when they reach the steps they are not carrying any extra baggage.

Suggested correction: The bags were slowing them down, so they probably just abandoned them in the street.

Factual error: It is not feasible for a flood to stop the flow of warm air for the northern hemisphere and make it as cold as it did in the movie. The air moves far too fast for anything to stop the flow of warm air in the northern hemisphere.

Other mistake: When the supercooled air is shown coming down, it makes all the windows in the skyscrapers explode. The library room they were in had 2 windows. These also should have exploded and the cold air should have killed them.

Other mistake: When his dad arrives at the library, the opening is larger and the raft with the food is gone. Had they gone out to get it after the storm passed, the doors would not have been frozen shut so neatly.

Suggested correction: Jack and Jason entered the library through a broken window in the large room they were initially gathered in shortly after the tidal wave. The raft with the food on it probably froze during the big freeze, so they never left the room after the storm passed.

Vice President Becker: I don't accept that abandoning half of the country is necessary!
Tom Gomez: Maybe if you'd listened to him sooner, it wouldn't be.
Vice President Becker: Bullshit! It's easy for him to suggest this plan. He's safely here in Washington.
Tom Gomez: His son is in Manhattan. I just thought you should know that before you start questioning his motives.

Trivia: There is a party at J.D.'s school after the academic decathlon. Most of the students are wearing name tags. Sam's name tag says "Hello my name is Yoda." (00:21:50)

Question: Why would Sam and his friends go to the library?

Answer: Possibly because it was the closest building with height to it as they are about to be hit by a gigantic wave of water. There was no snow yet, so I don't believe burning books or snow was on anybody's mind yet. It turned out to be a great idea as snow soon starts to fall and those books were literally a life saver.

Susan D. Santos

Answer: It was the closest building they could access. While the smarter move would have been to just go back to JD's apartment (which Brian and Laura suggest) it may have been too far a walk to get out of the flooding streets.

Answer: Big building with lots of space and lots of books to burn for heat.

Why did they burn the books and not the wooden shelves that the books were on?

As for burning books rather than shelves, it was just easier. They would have had to expend more energy to break down the shelves into manageable size.
