Return to Oz (1985) - 42 mistakes

Visible crew/equipment: After just meeting Tik-Tok, Dorothy winds him up, and then he bows, and raises his hat. As he bows a crewmember can clearly be seen crouched behind him.

Factual error: When Dorothy runs away from the hospital she is chased by a nurse, who has a torch. Earlier in this film the doctor said they two months away from the 20th century which gives the year as 1899. Such a modern torch that the nurse had was not invented yet.

Audio problem: When Tik Tok lets the Wheeler go, as the Wheeler skates off he is laughing and saying “Behave.” His mouth is clearly out of sync with the audio, however.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy is opening the mirrored door to Mombi’s bedroom, as she pulls the door open, a crewmember in jeans and a white tee-shirt is momentarily reflected in it.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy first enters the room full of ornaments, the camera pans backwards, away from her. The camera passes tables of ornaments. Watch the large blue vase to the right of the screen, and a cameraman can be seen reflected in it, walking backwards with the camera.

Continuity: When Dorothy picks up the key that she thinks was sent from Oz, she begins to rub the dirt off of it, getting her fingers dirty. In the next shot they're clean. In addition, the way she holds the key changes between shots.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy is strapped down to the pedestal by the doctors, they then proceed to push her down the hallway, and pass the camera on their way. As they pass, the camera casts a clear shadow on the sheet covering Dorothy.

Continuity: When Dorothy finds Tik Tok, there are cobwebs that hang from the wall beside him, and are draped on the side of Tik Tok's metal helmet. However in some shots these cobwebs that hang on his helmet vanish, then reappear again.

Continuity: When Tik Tok is just about to swing the lunch pail into Mombi, he freezes because his action winds out. In the next shot his position (his left arm, and the angle and way that he holds the lunch pail) changes between shots.

Continuity: When Tik Tok takes the lunch pail from Dorothy, to use it to attack the Wheeler's, his arm is naturally shiny. Moments later the same arm suddenly has cobwebs all over it. Then when Tik-Tok gets to the end of the corridor, the cobwebs are gone again.

Continuity: When the Doctor is setting up the machine for Dorothy, the power then goes out. Everyone leaves. If you look at the machine, it's 'tounge' is on the right side of it's 'mouth.' In the next shot it is now on the left, and it then stays there.

Continuity: When Dorothy is sent back to Kansas, she wakes up in the forest and she has a large spot of dirt on her forehead. This vanishes when Toto runs to her. It then reappears later, but now on the side of her forehead.

Visible crew/equipment: After Dorothy returns from Oz, we see her laying on the leaves in the woods. In an extreme closeup of her eyes, the camera is reflected in them.

Continuity: When the Wheelers have arrived back to Mombi's castle, in one shot you can see a broken pillar next to one Wheeler, totally bare. In the next overhead shot a long vine of ivy is laying on it.

Visible crew/equipment: When Jack’s head falls off, it is flying in the air, near the couch. Two black wires holding it up are visible.

Visible crew/equipment: When the Nome King says “I know something which will cheer you up,” it cuts to Jack Pumpkinhead and Tik Tok sliding along the ground. The track which is sliding them along is visible.

Continuity: When it shows Dorothy eating her Limestone cake with Tik Tok and Jack, in one shot her goblet of melted silver is rested, down on the table, but then suddenly in the next shot it is in her hand, off of the table.

Continuity: When Dorothy and Billina stand in the crate, after the storm, trying to figure out where they are, in overhead wideshots of them standing in the crate, Dorothy's dress rustles in a breeze, but in closeups of her, it is perfectly still.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy falls down into the Nome Kings lair, she falls to the floor and slides along into the scarecrow. The black sled she is sliding on is momentarily visible as she passes the camera.

Continuity: When Dorothy unties the red key from Mombi's wrist, while she is asleep, Mombi then snores and rolls over, and the red key lays on the bed. The position of the black ribbons attached to the key repeatedly changes between subsequent shots.

Continuity: When Dorothy finds the small green glass ornament, she shouts "Oz!", and the Scarecrow appears. In the shot when Dorothy calls "Oz", there are two large ornaments to the right side of the counter. Then when it cuts and the scarecrow "appears", the ornaments have now moved a few feet away, so that the Scarecrow can comfortably "appear."

Visible crew/equipment: After Billina lays an egg in the Nome Kings mouth, the King drops Jack Pumpkinhead to the floor, and wires attached to him, out at the side, are visible to let him down gently.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy, Tik Tok and Jack are eating and drinking in the Nome King's lair, Tik Tok says "What is it we are risking?", and there is a small explosion, causing the table to fall, and them to all fall back. A wire attached to the table to make it fall is visible to the right of the screen.

Continuity: After Ozma unstraps Dorothy from the pedestal, they run from the room, leaving both of the double swing-doors wide open. In the next shot of Dorothy and Ozma running down the hallway though, the left door is closed.

Continuity: When Dorothy and Billina are in the crate surrounded by water, then water begins to soak up, so that it gets very shallow. In the next shot over Dorothy's shoulder the water is suddenly more deep and rippling again. Also, the sand, once it dries up, goes from damp to drier.

Continuity: Aunt Em opens Dorothy's bedroom door a crack to check on her. She is standing outside the room, but she is peeping through the crack. Dorothy looks at her, and suddenly Aunt Em is standing in the room with the door almost fully opened.

Continuity: After Dorothy winds Tik Tok up (after he had gone beserk) her pigtails alternate from what shoulder they hang over (ie. her right pigtail was hanging behind her shoulder in the first shot, but then hangs in front of it in the next shot.)

Continuity: When it shows the chickens on the farm, just before Toto runs over and scares them all, the position of the brood of chickens is completely different between shots, and the branches and logs around them have also changed around.

Visible crew/equipment: In shots of Dorothy and Ozma running away from the doctor's clinic, there is a noticeable outline of kneepads under their dresses, and as Ozma slips down the muddy bank, and into the river, her dress momentarily rides up, revealing it quickly.

Continuity: When the group lands on The Nome King's mountain, we see Tik Tok land with his body buried in the snow. Then in the next shot he is suddenly less buried than he was in the first shot. Then in the next shot he isn't even buried, and is just laying on a rock.

Continuity: When The Nome King shows his ruby slippers to Dorothy, and tells her that he could send her back to Kansas, in frontal shots both his feet are down on the floor, but in shots from behind he is wiggling his right foot up in the air.

Continuity: When Dorothy looks up and spots the head of the ‘Gump’ on the wall, it is covered with cobwebs. Later when Jack removes it for the couch, it is clean.

Visible crew/equipment: When Tik Tok is spinning around and hitting the Wheelers with the lunch pail, a camera and crewmember are reflected in the shiny copper of Tik Tok’s front.

Visible crew/equipment: When Billina and Dorothy are stuck in the crate, when Billina says “how’s my grammar,” you can see a wooden board has been nailed to the crate to cover up the spaces in between the bars, so that the puppeteer can crouch down and control Billina.

Visible crew/equipment: As the camera is panning around to show off the variety of heads Mombi has collected, in one shot you can see the reflection of the cameraman with a camera in one of the glass screens.

Visible crew/equipment: When Billina lands on the couch with the cord, as she flies down some mechanism controlling her can be see, attached to her feet and legs.

Visible crew/equipment: Wires are clearly visible attached to Dorothy’s shoulders, Jack Pumpkinhead’s pumpkin head and his body, as everyone falls down from the sky after the couch goes bonkers.

Visible crew/equipment: When Mombi leads Dorothy into the 'head' room, as the camera moves along a crewmember in a pink shirt, wearing glasses, is reflected in the glass screens of the head cases.

Visible crew/equipment: When Dorothy is speaking to Aunt Em about the key she found, Aunt Em says "That legs mended, it's mended..." then she gets up and passes the camera, which casts a clear shadow on her as she walks past it.

Other: Nurse Wilson puts Dorothy into a room with a bed. After she says "You may have a nap if you wish," she leaves. Dorothy looks around the room for a while and when Dorothy looks out the door, Nurse Wilson has just gotten to the end of the hall. The hall is not very long and Nurse Wilson is not walking at a slow enough pace to have just reached the end of the hall. She should have already gotten past the end of the hall when Dorothy looks out.

Continuity: Dorothy and Ozma escape the clinic after the power goes out. However, as they're running outside the clinic, you can see that the lights are on inside.

Continuity: On The Nome King's mountain, everyone looks up, and Tik-Tok is standing closest to the edge, then the sofa-body of the Gump is there, then Dorothy on the other side of it. In the next shot Tik-Tok is suddenly beside Dorothy.
