Trivia

In the hospital scene when Doc Ock's mechanical arms are attacking the surgeons, there is a scene where the camera cuts to a surgeon raising the chainsaw in the air. That scene looks a lot like the scene from "Evil Dead 2" (1993) where the camera does the same thing when Ash grabs the chainsaw to cut off his hand. Another Sam Raimi film. See more...

Mistake Plot hole: Harry tells Doc Ock that in order to find Spider-Man he must find Peter first. Doc Ock finds Peter with Mary Jane in the cafe and throws a car through the window straight at them. Any normal man would've been killed instantly, and Doc Ock doesn't know that Peter is Spider-Man. Given that Peter is his only lead on Spider-Man, it makes no sense that Doc Ock would effectively try to kill him.

Mistake Continuity: During the train scene, Spider-Man's mask had gone partially black. We also see it when Spidey puts his mask back on. Yet when Doc brings him to Harry, we don't even see a patch of darkness on his mask.

Mistake Factual error: Considering the brightness of the fusion process, Dr. Octavius has to wear special goggles to be able to see it. Yet no one else in the room is wearing such goggles or seem hurt by watching the whole process, just as at the end of the movie. When welding something, no one can look at the arc that's created, as it would hurt his eyes and burn his retina; presumably, the fusion process would be brighter and more powerful than that, and so should have some kind of damaging effect on everyone's eyesight (except Spider Man's, maybe).

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: On the way to the theater Peter intercepts a police officer chasing a couple of criminals. At the end of that scene one of the police cars has a tremendous wreck that swings the car sideways. There is a clear shot of the driver with a black helmet on.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter misses the class at the university, the way he holds his books/folders changes when the teacher talks to him.

Mistake Continuity: Peter has a small horseshoe-shaped scar on his right cheek. In Dr. Octopus's lab, as Octopus is destroying the fusion reactor, they share a meaningful look and the scar has switched cheeks.

Mistake Continuity: After Spider-Man recovers from the train incident, Doc Ock smashes in the other end of the train and throws the door on the floor in front of him. The camera cuts to another shot, and when it returns the door is no longer on the floor, nor is it there for any subsequent shot.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter arrives at his aunt's home at the beginning of the movie, it's night. He talks to Harry in the kitchen a few minutes later, and look at the purple balloon by Peter's head, it reflects a window with lots of light coming through it.

Mistake Continuity: When Dr. Octopus is robbing the bank, NYPD squad car 4619 arrives on the scene. However, squad car 4619 was badly damaged during the pizza delivery car chase earlier in the movie - an awfully quick fix.

Mistake Factual error: Dr. Octavius says his fusion relies on tritium and that there is only 25 pounds of the substance in the world. In reality, tritium is a good deal more common than that. From this article (http://www.epa.gov/radiation/radionuclides/tritium.htm): "It is used in various self-luminescent devices, such as exit signs in buildings, aircraft dials, gauges, luminous paints, and wristwatches. Tritium is also used in life science research, and in studies investigating the safety of potential new drugs." There's also a large region of water near Antarctica which is rich in tritium.

Mistake Continuity: When Aunt May hugs Peter near her "hero" speech, she hugs him with her head to his left shoulder. The shot changes and you see that she is now on Peter's right shoulder. The shot changes back and you see her on his left shoulder again.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene where Peter saves the child (Venus Lam) from the burning building, right after the jump over the floor opening, the child stands up to help Peter we can see she wears knee pads under her pajamas.

Mistake Continuity: When Aunt May is falling off the building, her purse is on her right arm. The next shot shows the purse on her left arm.

Mistake Visible crew/equipment: At the very last scene of Mary Jane looking over the city in Peter's apartment, there is a reflection in the window where the camera lens and cameraman are partially visible.

Mistake Continuity: Regarding the scene where Doc Ock has delivered Spider-Man to Harry's mansion, when Harry pulls off Spider-Man's mask, there is a very obvious and bad splice. The "mask on" Spidey's head is in a different position and further away than the "mask off" Spidey's head.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene with Peter's "I'm back!" jump, It shows a shot from above and you can see his solid outlined shadow in front of him. However, in the very next shot it shows you a close up of Peter walking, and there is no longer a shadow there.

Mistake Continuity: During the final conversation between Spider-Man and Doc Ock, the rips in Spider-Man's suit keep changing. For instance, there is a tear on his right shoulder; for most of the scene, there is a single piece of black webbing left holding the rip together, but when Doc Ock grabs Spider-Man's arm, the rip now has two pieces of black webbing. Then it goes back to one.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Peter is riding his scooter to Mary Jane's play, after the music fades out you see a black convertible being chased by several police cars. The black convertible is rammed forcibly, and you see many hideous dents on the side of the car. Thirty seconds later, after Peter is done talking to the kids, we see the same car from the same side it got rammed into, but the hideous dents have vanished.

Mistake Continuity: As Peter stops the elevated train with many webs, a tear appears in his suit on the inside left arm during a closeup. Later, when his arms are still outstreched, there are many shots where you can see that the tear has disappeared; for example, a few shots later when he is still trying to stop the train; when the passengers are lifting him over their heads into the train; and many others.

Mistake Plot hole: At the end, when Peter saves Mary Jane from the collapsing structure, he jumps up in the air and swings her to safety. However if you look at the web he is holding onto it is hanging down vertically. What did he attach the web to that was directly above him, the sky? Every bit of the structure around him was/had collapsed and the only thing remotely close to swing from was the cranes. Yet we see that was quite a distance away, so Peter would have had to shoot the web away from himself not above him.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter visits the doctor, look closely at the skeleton behind him. In the first shot, you can see two spots of light reflected on its skull; in subsequent shots, there is only one spot of light.

Mistake Deliberate "mistake": When Spider-Man shoots a single web out of each arm to stop the train, in the shots of his reactions, you can see that he is holding many webs in each hand. Then when he shoots multiple webs to try and stop the train, he has the same amount of different webs as before. Obviously they didn't have footage of him just holding a single web, and used shots from later in the sequence.

Mistake Continuity: Just after the bank robbery, Spider-Man and Doc Ock are on the side of the building. Doc Ock says "oops, butterfingers." Spider-Man shoots a web to catch Aunt May. In this shot, Spider-Man is on one knee with the other one resting on the wall, yet in the following shot he is standing up and leaning back to pull Aunt May up.

Mistake Revealing: As Mary-Jane is being lowered onto the crane after Spidey has saved her, you can see that her dress is being held together to stop the split up her leg opening up too much. However in the next shot when she runs down the steps towards her fiance, the dress is flapping around and the split is wide open.

Mistake Continuity: On his last pizza delivery before he gets fired, when it first cuts to the receptionist and the room that she is in, the clock is a lot higher up in this shot, then in the following shot when the receptionist is looking in Peter's direction, the clock is now at eye level.

Mistake Continuity: In the opening scene of the film when we see Peter almost hit his pizza boss, if you slow this part down you can see in one shot, Peter's boss has his hands wide open, and in the following shot he is checking his wristwatch.

Mistake Continuity: Near the end of the film when Peter takes his costume back from inside the Bugle, Peter's boss at the Bugle takes down the note left in a web, in one shot his fingers are half way up the note, in the following shot there right on the edge.

Mistake Continuity: Just after the car goes through the cafe window and almost hits MJ and Peter, they both get up and most of MJ's hair is blown back over her shoulders. However, in the following shots, there is now a lot more at the front of her shoulders, than in previous shots. Throughout the movie, her hair changes position in consecutive shots.

Mistake Continuity: Close to the middle of the film when Peter is in the big room where MJ announces her engagement, when Peter is finished talking with Harry at the bar he gets pulled away by Jameson, Harry then turns around and drinks, yet when it cuts to a shot of Peter and Jameson walking away, look in the background and Harry is still looking at Peter walking away.

Mistake Other: When Peter Parker is walking down the streets of NYC on his first day as a "normal, powerless human" It is clear that the people in the background are not extras. You can see several people watching him during the shooting of the scenes.

Mistake Continuity: When the garbage man is in Jameson's office, and Jameson is holding the Spider-Man suit, he is holding it almost at arms length to his right, yet in the following shot, it's a lot closer to his body.

Mistake Continuity: When Doc Ock carried MJ up the side of the building after he kidnapped her, one of the D'Agostino banners was ripped out of the building and fell. But when Peter came out of the deli and looked across the street, the banner was back on the building and the building wall showed no sign of damage from Doc Ock's tentacles.

Mistake Continuity: At the beginning of the film, Peter bumps into Dr Connors. Peter has his bag on his left shoulder but in the previous shot you don't see him put it on his left shoulder.

Mistake Continuity: When Doc Ock escapes from the hospital, he hits a taxi with his tentacle. The taxi goes flying and is about to land on its roof in the middle of the street. The next shot however shows the taxi landing on top of another one, and the taxi is right side up.

Mistake Continuity: There are two close-ups of Peter's head when he is lying on the floor of the train: one of the shots has a black shoe with white laces very near his head, the other a blue, white, and black shoe, also right next to his head. In the wider overhead shots of Peter, no one standing around him is wearing shoes like that, nor are they standing close enough for their feet to be in the close-up shot in the first place.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene where Peter Parker saves the child from the buning building, while he is running with her in his arms, you can see that in some shots she is a doll.

Mistake Continuity: When the garbage man enters Jameson's office, Jameson is holding a phone to his chest, yet in the following shot he is not holding the phone, and we didn't see him put it down in the previous shot.

Mistake Continuity: When the people are watching Doc Ock with his experiment, Rosie is standing at the bottom of the stairs. When Doc Ock passes her his coat, she is then seen in the background standing next to a large TV screen.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene where Doc Ock comes out of the hospital and throws a car onto another one, you can tell the man in there is just a dummy. He has no reaction what so ever. He just sits there as if nothing happened.

Mistake Continuity: After Doc Ock throws the car through the side of the deli, it shows Peter and MJ from outside the building and there's a table with a chair at the base of the hole right up next to the nonexistent wall. For the rest of the scene, the table and chair are not there.

Mistake Continuity: Near the end of the film when we see Peter looking out of his window from his apartment, the girl from across the hall offers chocolate cake. When they are done eating, Peter is holding the fork with his thumb and in the following shot he is not. The fork has moved across the plate a little between shots.

Mistake Continuity: When Doc Ock robs the bank, Peter pushes Aunt May away, but in one shot he turns his chair to push away, yet in the following shot the chair is facing a different direction.

Mistake Continuity: When we see MJ and her fiancee in her room close to the end, MJ says to him "Lean your head back for me." Her hand is not in his hand in one shot, but is in another.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter starts to lose his powers, and tries to climb up the side of the building, in several shots, he is by a window, and he slips opposite the window, yet in the following shot he is a lot further above the window. His distance and position from the window changes in subsequent shots.

Mistake Continuity: When Spider-Man and Doc Ock are fighting on the side of the building, Doc Ock drops Aunt May. If you slow this part down, she is holding her handbag on her left arm, then on the close up shot it's on her right arm, then back on her left.

Mistake Continuity: When Spider-Man is on the train with Doc Ock, Spider-Man saves two people and in this shot we see a station, yet in the following shot with Doc Ock there is no station visible in the background.

Mistake Continuity: When Spider-Man takes back his suit from Jameson's office, Jameson looks up at the skyline, and there are no steel or metal bars running over the skyline, yet when the camera zooms out with Jameson yelling "I want Spider-Man", metal bars have appeared over the skyline that were not there in the previous shot.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter and MJ are in the cafe, before Doc Ock attacks, the same sequence of cars and pedestrians outside the window goes by several times. Pay particular attention when the taxi goes by.

Mistake Continuity: During the scene where Peter is on his way to the play, he stops the cop car flying through the air by catching it in a web, but the glass shards and debris which are flying along with the car are not in the web anywhere, nor do they hit the people in the path of the car.

Mistake Continuity: As you are listening to the bank guard tell Doctor Octopus, "Put your arms up! All of them!", look at the money cart inside the vault. It goes from just a few items on it at first, to having a multitude of items on it, as well as around it, in later shots of the scene.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene where Spider-Man is pushed inside the train by Dr. Octopus and grabs the bar then leaps to the next: The passengers are all looking where they've been told Spider-Man is supposed to be, but none of them are actually looking at him, revealing that he is a CGI image and not an actor.

Mistake Continuity: When the garbage man brings in Spider-Man's costume and Jameson holds it in his hands, the position of his grip changes between shots.

Mistake Continuity: When Spider-Man is at the front of the train trying to stop it, the windows at the front are already smashed, yet when he spins a load of webs, the two panes at the front smash again.

Mistake Continuity: At the beginning of the film when we see Peter in Jameson's office, the black guy says, "Five minutes to deadline Jonah." Jameson raises his hand to him, but in the following shot it's a lot lower. Also, when he's talking about a food poisoning scare, he raises his hand high up to the right, yet in the following shot, it's far to the left of him.

Mistake Revealing: In the scene right after Peter and MJ swing off and they are on the web, Peter is crawling toward MJ. You can see on his right thigh that where there is a tear mark that his skin isn't showing through, but instead there is a piece of flesh toned material. (It bends unlike the skin on the thigh would)This was probably done so the Spidey suit would still remain tight to Peter's body.

Mistake Other: Sure Spider-Man has super human powers, but his costume doesn't (as we see as it rips and tears quite a lot through the movie) so how come the back of it is still intact and not even dirty after being dragged over the street by a train that's going at high speed?

Mistake Continuity: On the way to the play when Spider-Man is chasing the criminals in the car, the passenger is using a shotgun which switches to an automatic weapon which then switches back to a shotgun in a matter of seconds. There is no time for him to switch the guns that fast in the scene.

Mistake Other: When Spider-Man and Mary Jane are sweet-talking in the web, her hair blows around freely, whereas considering how sticky a spider web is, her hair should be sticking fast to it. Permanently. After all, the web cannot be sticky enough to hold her body, while not being sticky enough to glue her hair.

Mistake Continuity: At the very beginning when Peter walks into the pizza place with his boss, a policeman walks out, In the following shot, the policeman has vanished.

Mistake Continuity: After Peter came out of the deli, you could see and hear people running around screaming hysterically. But when the shot showed Peter's glasses falling to the ground in slow motion, you could see people were just walking down the street leisurely.

Mistake Continuity: In the elevator scene when Peter/Spider-man first loses his powers, we see a man standing outside the elevator holding a dog on a leash. However, after Spider-man delivers the line about the costume riding up on the crotch, we see the man use both hands to adjust his jacket, and the leash is nowhere to be found, nor is their any indication that the dog is on the elevator.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter is on the rooftop, just before he does his "I'm back" line, he begins to run. He runs quite some distance before it goes to slow motion, yet a few shots later during the slow motion, he is back to where he started running.

Mistake Continuity: Just after the bank robbery, Doc Ock and Spider-Man are fighting on the side of the building. When some rocks fall down, there is a man (that looks like Stan Lee) pulling a girl away from falling debris. There is a red car to the right of the screen and a yellow taxi to the left, yet in the following shot from a different angle, there are a few more people in front of the red car, and no dust on the ground where the rocks hit the floor.

Mistake Continuity: As Peter is walking along the top of the building, about to do his "I'm back" jump, he is about three quarters of the way past a skylight on the roof. Then the shot changes, and he is just walking up to it.

Mistake Continuity: As Ock climbs the building with Aunt May, a girl is on the phone and feels the trembles. She hangs up the phone and gets up to look out the window. At the desk in front of her, there is an employee helping a customer. As the first girl goes to the window, the customer gets up to leave. The tentacle crashes through the side of the building, the camera pans out and the employee helping the customer is away from her desk, the chair is pushed in and the phone is off the receiver.

Mistake Audio problem: Just before Aunt May does her hero speech she tells Peter that he 'Did a very brave thing, telling me, and I'm proud'. There is a pause between each clause of the sentence and the 'Telling me' line is obviously dubbed, the shot is from behind but the sound of the line is different.

Mistake Continuity: As Mary Jane is reunited with John Jameson after Spider-Man lowers her down from the crane, one shot shows tears along Spider-Man's suit along the left leg while he is crouching. However, in a later shot, he stands up to swing away and the tears are now running along his right leg.

Mistake Factual error: In the scene where Peter is saving the children from the burning building, there is no smoke from the fire, when there should be black smoke billowing out the windows. He wouldn't be able to just stand up and walk through the building. But in order for the scene to play out on camera, the area is smoke free. A fire in an apartment or office building will include combusting of large amounts of plastics (computers and so on). So unless there is nothing but alcohols in the building there will be immense amounts of smoke.

Mistake Audio problem: When Aunt May gives Peter his birthday money, before she says, "Can you believe that it's two years next month since he was taken?", we see her from the side, and the motion of her jaw shows that her lips are moving before she speaks. When she says, "Were I to face the one responsible.", there's another shot of her from the side, and as she continues, ".for what happened", her jaw doesn't move at all. In the same shot, when she says, "Oh, I don't know what I'd do", once again the motion of her jaw show that her lips are moving before she speaks.

Mistake Continuity: When the car flies past Peter's head, we have a full view of the tire rim which means we are looking at the side of the car. But this view is only possible if the car were thrown in head-first or tail-first, which wasn't the case.

Mistake Revealing: When Mary Jane is being pulled toward the tritium when Doc Ock has her, the shot is taken from her feet up to her head. If you look where her dress ends, you can just barely see that instead of having the regular open dress, it is switched with shorts of the same type so you can't see under her dress.

Mistake Continuity: When Peter is being fired from his pizza place job, there is a clock behind him. While the clock is on Peter the second hand is near the 4. The shot then changes to the boss and then goes back to Peter about 10 seconds later, so the second hand should be on the 6 or the 7, but it is up at the 2.

Mistake Factual error: When Spider-Man is fighting with Doc Ock and Doc Ock throws Spider-Man through the overhead pedestrian bridge, Doc Ock throws Spider-man in the direction of travel of the train, and when passing through the bridge, Spider-Man doesn't touch anything. When Spider-Man comes out the other side, he is "behind" Doc Ock (in terms of the direction of train travel). This implies that Spider-Man has slowed down in the air - fair enough due to wind resistance - and so is traveling slower. However, Spider-Man then hits Doc Ock from behind, meaning he's now sped himself up in mid air. He doesn't use any webs.

Mistake Continuity: While in the bank trying to get a loan, there is a desk with two chairs behind Peter and Aunt May. As Doc Ock throws the vault door in their direction and Peter kicks the two of them out of danger, there are no chairs at the desk behind them.

Mistake Continuity: When Harry is held upside-down by Doc Ock, his tie is tacked to his shirt partway down (so it doesn't fly in his face). A couple seconds later, on the balcony, Harry's tie is not tacked.

Mistake Continuity: In the scene where Aunt May is outside her house, packing things into boxes, we see a close-up of her holding what appears to be a large black leather shoe at upper chest level. The next shot is a wide shot of the yard, and now she's holding it in a different position near waist level.

Mistake Other: This mistake can be seen in Swedish theaters: right in the end where Peter Parker says "Thank you, Mary Jane Watson" the Swedish subtitles say "Wilson" instead of "Watson".

Mistake Continuity: At the end of the "I've changed" conversation with Mary Jane, the taxi is right next to her as she turns towards it (you can see its roof next to her face), yet in the very next shot she has to cross the street to get to it.

Mistake Factual error: When Peter calls Mary Jane to apologize for missing her show, he puts in two coins and then dials seven digits. By the time New York City pay phones went from 25 to 50 cents, a caller was required to dial eleven digits for all calls.

Mistake Continuity: The spiderweb that Harry brushes aside is missing from two previous shots: from inside the secret lair looking out at Harry, and from the reverse shot looking into the lair.

Mistake Continuity: In the final conversation between Peter and Mary Jane at his doorway, the lighting on his face switches in every shot.

Mistake Continuity: When John Jameson and Mary Jane are walking down the stairs during John's celebration party, there are two people halfway down the staircase standing by themselves. When it does the closeup of John and Mary Jane, there are four people now standing in that spot.

Mistake Factual error: Harry stumbles onto his dad's secret room and it is free of dust except for a few cobwebs. While there may have been no human activity in the room for almost two years, there were holes in the room that let sunlight, air, and insects/arachnids in, therefore there must have been airflow. With the airflow, dust or dirt should have entered the room and collected on the items.

Mistake Continuity: In the first few shots of Mary Jane held hostage by Dr. Octopus in the factory, her arms above her head change from straight to bent and back.

Mistake Factual error: The only elevated trains in Manhattan are Metro North that goes to Connecticut and the N, Q, R, W line that goes to Brooklyn/Queens, and that line goes over a bridge. None of these trains are elevated in mid-Manhattan; and most certainly, the end of the subway line would not just be a big metal "bumper" that leads into the water.
