Once Upon a Time in Mexico (2003) - 43 mistakes

Revealing: Near the end of the movie, when Johnny Depp's eyes are removed, he talks with the boy when he's against the wall. In several shots you can see Johnny Depp's eyes through the sunglasses

Visible crew/equipment: At the bullfight a crew member is reflected in Sands' sunglasses in several shots.

Continuity: Towards the end when the alcoholic Mariachi is about to use his guitar case as a RC car, he opens it to get the control and shuts it. A cut to a different shot shows the box open again, but then when it rolls to the truck, it is closed.

Audio problem: At the beginning of the film when Antonio Banderas is playing the guitar on top of the building and there is a helicopter camera panning around him, he is playing something completely different to what the music does.

Continuity: In the beginning when El Mariachi is playing his guitar we can see him playing with a pick. But in one of the shots he is playing with his fingers.

Continuity: When Lorenzo practices shooting he hits a bottle which his alcoholic buddy is holding in his hand. Only the neck remains in the hand, but when the camera angle changes the piece is much bigger, including the label.

Continuity: Before Sands kills Bellini, when he says that he wouldn't think twice about ripping the patch from his eye hole and skull-f***ing him to death he is holding his cigarette up in the air. When the camera angle changes the arm is down on the table.

Continuity: The chain with which El and Carolina are linked together gets cut open with a welding torch. When the chain falls down on the ground it's intact again.

Continuity: After Depp kills Cheech he loads him into the trunk of the Studebaker. You see him driving with a beautiful sunset in the background but when he is searching the body and putting it in the water it is daylight again.

Factual error: When Antonio Banderas gets shot with the dart in the forehead there are two reasons why that wouldn't work - 1) There isn't any muscle tissue and the skin is too thin for the dart to stick most likely. 2) The tranquilizer would never take effect that quick unless it was injected into a muscle where the blood supply is greater.

Continuity: In the scene where the little boy is guiding Agent Sands to the center of the city, watch Agent Sands' right hand. In one shot, his hand is empty and he is holding on to the wall as he walks, but in the shot where the boy turns around to look at the guy who is following them, you can see a gun in his hand. Shortly after that, his hand is empty again and he reaches in his pants and pulls out the gun.

Continuity: When Carolina is being shot by Marquez she is holding her daughter who actually looks quite serious. When it cuts she is suddenly smiling.

Continuity: When we see the guitar maker walking through the village playing the guitar which he is going to give El, he is first playing left-handed, then right-handed. From the loose ends of the strap one can tell that the shot is not flipped.

Continuity: In the scene where Bellini tells Sands El's story the food on Sands' plate disappears when he says that he couldn't find a briefcase small enough for $10,000.

Continuity: In the scenes after Johnny Depp's eyes are removed the length of the blood draining down his face changes from shot to shot. Generally they get longer (as you would expect) but occasionally revert to shorter blood trails. Particularly noticeable when going from under his chin to not reaching his chin.

Factual error: In the flashback scene when El Mariachi and Carolina are getting married, the chain is cut with a process called MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding. This is a welding, NOT, a cutting process. While it can be done, the heat generated would have burned both wrists.

Continuity: When Jorge is captured there is a shot where he is sitting with his head tipped over to the side, while one of the bad guys suggests to torture him. In the next shot Jorge's head is straight.

Revealing: When the mariachi wakes up after being tranquilized by the dart, he beats a couple of guys. Then he turns around shooting a guy in his head. If you look closely you can see blood being splattered on his head from the lower right corner.

Continuity: When Billy says "I present to you, senior Blascoe" to Barillo while he is playing the piano, you can see a guard in the background pointing his gun to the left. When it cuts the gun is pointing to the right.

Factual error: When Sands throws Bellini's body into the water it floats like on the Dead Sea, as if it's made out of cardboard - barely submerged at all.

Continuity: Shortly before Sands kills the waitress she brings a pot of coffee which disappears at the end of the scene.

Revealing: When Sands shoots the waitress she dies without receiving a visible injury.

Continuity: In the escape scene Carolina puts her leg over the windowsill. When the camera angle changes the foot is back up.

Deliberate "mistake": When Antonio Banderas jumps into the Cadillac to escape from the bikers, there is a wide shot of him driving the car while being chased for a few seconds where you can very obviously tell he is not driving the car. It is a stunt double, and a very skinny one at that. In fact it almost looks like a woman.

Continuity: In the scene at the end of the movie, where El Mariachi steps in to the president's room and saves Jorge FBI by shooting Barillo, it is his right leg making noises when he walks after having shot Barillo, not his left leg as throughout the whole movie.

Revealing: When Sands throws a rock at Bellini after pushing him in the water, the rock hits his chest and abs. You can see the body is fake because as the rock hits, the arms along with the chest and head are lifted up off the water far too quickly, as if it was filled with air. Much like if you threw a rock into a life raft.

Continuity: In the beginning when Sands and Belini are talking and Belini says "That's when i first heard about him. He was a legend", we can see Sands glass with tequila is full. When it cuts the glass is empty with no time for him drinking it.

Continuity: When the army shoots the guards around the president, before El shows up and saves him, you can see bullets blowing off pieces of the wall behind. A second later, they disappear. The damage was CGI, and wasn't animated in all the shots.

Revealing: You can see Jorge's hair move, as a hair dryer blows in his hair, right before Ajedrez rams her gun in his head.

Continuity: As the bikes are chasing Banderas in the car, you can see the sky is overcast. In a following wide shot of the car and the bikes the sky it is a perfect blue sky with only a few small clouds in the background.

Continuity: Carolina climbs on the bus with high heels, but when she and El run across the roof she wears flat shoes. As she jumps you can see she has nothing on her feet. There was not enough time for her to take them off.

Revealing: In the scene where Johnny Depp is searching Cheech Marin by the river, you can see Cheech breathing, even though he is supposedly dead from the gunshot in the scene before.

Continuity: When Belini is telling Sands about Carolina, as he says "The most drop dead gorgeous woman you'll ever see", we go back to the bar where you can see the bartender push the counter back on the floor. At that time you can see all the bottles on the left side of the counter. Two shots later all the bottles has moved to the right side of the counter.

Continuity: When the mariachi is shot by Marquez we see holes in his shirt made by the bullets as he flies backwards in the air. There's a quick shot back at Marquez still shooting, then back to the mariachi still flying through the air, but this time the holes made by the bullets in his shirt are covered in blood. That much blood wouldn't appear that fast.

Revealing: Watch carefully when El Mariachi says "Then I guess I have no choice but to kill you all" to Cucuy, and he fires a shot. You can see a black outline on the shirt of the guy's shirt who's hit right before sparks shoot out of the place of impact.

Revealing: After Carolina is shot dead her corpse breathes a little.

Continuity: During the shootout with Danny Trejo's men, one of his motorcycle thugs hits a car and is sent flying through the air. If you watch, you can see the approaching car is white, but when the thug runs into the side, it is a green car.

Continuity: When Sands buys chewing gum for the boy, we read the mark 'Canel's' on the box. One shot later, the shot is reversed and we can see 's'lenaC'. The box reverts to normal on the next shot.

Continuity: After Sands shoots Ajedrez, his gun change pointing angle between the shots.

Continuity: When Barillo has his face operated on, we get a shot of him where we can see the skin around his eyes is extremely affected by the operation. Then later when we see him looking at his dead daughter, we can see the skin around his eyes is almost fully healed. This is just a few hours after his operation, which would be impossible.

Continuity: When Billy and Jorge are talking in the church and Jorge says "Can you get him close to Barillo" about Billy's dog, you see Billy holding on to his dog with both hands. When it cuts you see his arm suddenly back resting on the back of the bench.

Factual error: When the guy goes to tell the president "it's not safe here anymore" he calls him "El Presidente" which means "the president". Shouldn't he have said "Senior Presidente" (Mr. President)?

Continuity: Near the end, when blinded agent Sands is shot by one of the two bad guys in the leg, he falls towards and drops both his glasses and the gun he's holding. Then the view changes to the bad guy and in the next shot on Depp, he is holding that gun in his hand again, miraculously.
