Mistakes

When Jack sees Will run toward the Aztec chest, he quickly slices his palm and parries with Barbossa. In the shot facing Barbossa, Jack strikes the sword out of Barbossa's hand, then as Barbossa spins around his right hand is empty, and we hear the sword falling in the distance. However, when Barbossa says, "Ten years you carry that pistol..." Barbossa is still miraculously holding his sword - the sword tip is moving at the bottom of the screen, as he speaks. (More of the sword is visible on VHS.) See more...

Entry The bit where Will impersonates Jack was devised by Orlando Bloom (Will), who asked the producer if he could put it in the movie.
Entry Johnny Depp uses the phrase "Interesting..." as his trademark, in many of the movies he stars in, including Sleepy Hollow. He uses it in PotC when Koehler's skeletal hand tries to grab him in prison.
Entry Be sure to stay through the credits, at the end there is an interesting scene.
Entry Jack's pistol is the only authentic 18th century pistol in the movie. Director Gore Verbinski requested it especially because of the importance of the prop. The rest are made by a propmaster.
Entry In the sword fight scene between Jack and Will, the tattoo Orlando Bloom (Will) got while filming The Lord of the Rings trilogy can be seen on his right forearm when they stop for a moment and his arm is in the air, blocking Jack's sword with his own.
Entry When Will Turner gives Governor Swann the Commodore's sword, the sword-flipping done by Will took fifteen takes, because Orlando Bloom (who played Will) kept dropping the sword. On DVD 1, Director's commentary.
Entry One of Barbossa's pirates has a beard with dreadlocks that's always on fire in the film. There is wire with copper sockets in the ends of the dreads, where they would insert incense and burn it for the smoking effect. After every take they would have to reinsert incense and relight his beard. During the sword play, the locks in his beard would flop around, causing it to possibly burn himself or someone else, or even light up the rest of his beard.
Entry The final time the cannon goes off when the Black Pearl crew are ransacking the town where Will and Elizabeth live, the smoke cloud across the moon forms a Mickey Mouse silhouette.
Entry On the day when Keira Knightley had to kiss Orlando Bloom during filming lots of the members of the cast brought their teenage daughters to the set. As Keira and Orlando were kissing all the girls were giving her evil glares so in a Behind the Scenes special, Keira apologized to all the girls who are obsessed with Orlando.
Entry In one of the deleted scenes on the DVD where Jack and the pirates are improvising about the French ("They invented mayonnaise"), his last line in the clip is "I'll get me coat." This is a reference to "The Fast Show," which featured a guest appearance by Johnny Depp (Jack) in its final show.
Entry The Aztec chest that the medallions are in is the same chest used in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Entry As the Interceptor is pulling away from the Dauntless, in the wide shot there are still ropes between the two ships. The camera crew were caught off guard, since the sails were full, the Interceptor started pulling away sooner than expected, pulling the ropes taut, ripping off the belaying pins. Johnny Depp (Jack) was hit hard in the knee with one of those pins and knocked him to the ground. It was the only shot the camera crew had of Interceptor actually pulling away. On screen, in the close-up, Will is seen cutting all the lines. Commentary, DVD.
Entry Elizabeth falling off the fort was filmed on a set, south of Los Angeles. Jack diving off the ship to rescue her was filmed in the Caribbean, and his actually rescuing Elizabeth was filmed in a tank in Long Beach, California. There are thousands of miles between those three consecutive shots. This is similar circumstances to the scene when Elizabeth is walking the plank and surfacing. Both were shot in the Caribbean, but with a few days in-between shots. On the commentary, Jack Davenport (Norrington) mentions Keira Knightley's (Elizabeth) little-known ability to hold her breath for two days.
Entry After we see the Disney ride scene at the jail, where the pirates are trying to get the dog to come near them with a bone, Jack Sparrow says to the pirates "You can keep doing that forever, that dog is never going to move." Besides the obvious visual reference to the ride, the line's relevant too - as in the Disney ride, the pirates *will* keep doing that forever, and the dog *is* never going to move.
Entry Johnny Depp actually had his teeth capped for the film, and kept the caps on for several months after the filming was completed in case he was called back for reshoots.
Entry After filming, Johnny Depp had a permanent tattoo of a sparrow done on his arm "for my boy". It's the same as the one seen in this film, except the sparrow was flying away from him, so he turned it around so it was coming back.
Entry Boy Wonder Productions was one of several SFX firms subcontracted by Disney to work on the film. It was founded by Burt Ward, the former actor who played Robin (the "Boy Wonder") on the old Batman (1966) TV series.
Entry As revealed during several interviews with Johnny Depp and his costars, he based his portrayal of his character on Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards who Depp has suggested should appear in the sequel, playing Jack's father.
Entry Johnny Depp wears contacts in the movie. But they are not for changing his eye colour or anything, they are actually darkly tinted to act like sunglasses so Depp wouldn't have to squint when they were filming in the sun.
Entry Another scene taken from the Disney ride is when we FIRST (because they go back in that cave a lot) watch Will and Jack row into the cave. Will looks to the left and sees skeletons, a sword and a large crab. This is about the first thing seen on the ride.
Entry Part of the line "Shame about the French, really, obsessed with raisins. Humiliated grapes, really," said by Jack in a deleted scene, is similar to a line used in Johnny Depp's other film, Benny & Joon (1993).
Entry When Barbossa and Jack are skeletons in the moonlight, their eyeballs were really theirs. It was the only part of their bodies which was not CGI-animated. Audio commentaries.
Entry On the bonus DVD deleted scenes segment, there an improvised scene where Jack is trying to remember the word 'Parlay' and goes on to talk about the French. He says at one point 'they're great singers'. Johnny Depp's girlfriend is the French singer Vanessa Paradis.
Entry In the blacksmith shop, Jack lifts up a sack filled with soot and sprays Will all over his face with it. The soot is actually chocolate powder, so in other words it was a chocolate covered Will.
Entry The phrase that Jack and Gibbs utter in the Tortuga pub, "Take what you can. Give nothing back," was actually inspired by the crew of the ''Lady Washington'', the ship that played the "Interceptor." It refers to taking in a ship's sails during a high wind and not letting any canvas slip back. (DVD commentary)
Entry In a deleted scene Will and Jack are seen entering the pub. A man is being dunked into a well and spits out water exactly like in the ride.
Entry In the romantic scene between Elizabeth and Will where she shows him the medallion, she pulls it from around her neck. The necklace was attached to the back of her neck with sellotape to make it easily removable, but the first few times she pulled it off the tape was too tightly attached and pulled bits of hair off too. Commentary, DVD.
Entry The pile of gold on Isla de Muerta is based on the very end of the Disneyland ride. So is the scene where the wine is going through Barbossa's skeleton, as he is drinking on deck after Elizabeth interacts with the cursed skeletal pirates.
Entry The scene where the pirate is chasing the maid through the streets, laughing madly, is also taken directly from the original Disney attraction.
Entry Near the beginning of the movie, Jack and Will wake up a man sleeping in a muddy area with some pigs. In the Disneyland ride you can see a pirate doing the same thing.
Entry The scene where the prisoners in the jail cell are trying to get the dog to give them the keys is taken straight from the ride in Disneyland. The costumes and dog are even the same.
Entry Jack Sparrow has lots of braids and beads in his hair. If you look closely, you can see that in the posters and other merchandise, the braids are on the opposite side than they were in the film.
Entry Young Elizabeth sings a pirate's song in the opening shot. It is the same song that Elizabeth teaches Jack when they are marooned on the island. At the end aboard the Black Pearl, Jack starts to sing that song when he says, "Bring me the horizon." This song is from the PotC ride at Disneyland.
Entry In the previews on TV Elizabeth Swann is shown in the water in a purple dress with a shark swimming in front of her, but in the actual movie you don't see this. This probably would've happened after she walks the plank, but she had taken off the dress already and there simply is no shark.
Entry The leather cuff Jack wears in the movie is based on one that Johnny Depp wore in another one of his movies. The costume designer rented all of his movies and watched them in order to duplicate the exact leather cuff Johnny wanted.
Entry Right after the final duel between Barbossa and Sparrow, Barbossa states he feels cold and then drops dead. We then see a shot of Barbossa's apple dropping from his hand. This could be reminiscent of another Disney movie, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), in which she is poisoned by the witch and also drops the apple in the same way.
