Trivia

One of Barbossa's pirates has a beard with dreadlocks that's always on fire in the film. There is wire with copper sockets in the ends of the dreads, where they would insert incense and burn it for the smoking effect. After every take they would have to reinsert incense and relight his beard. During the sword play, the locks in his beard would flop around, causing it to possibly burn himself or someone else, or even light up the rest of his beard. See more...

Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - 137 minor mistakes

Directed by Gore Verbinski, starring Jack Davenport, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Crook, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Jonathan Pryce (add more)

Genres: Action, Adventure, Comedy, Fantasy

Please note: The sliding down the rope scene is perfectly possible - the link between Johnny Depp's handcuffs is long enough that he can fold it in half and sling the loop over the rope. Also Will's father - yes, he was still alive, stuck under the sea for 10 years attached to a cannon (or crushed to pieces - they comment on "the crushing black depths"). Not a mistake though. Most importantly, JACK ISN'T CURSED FOR THE WHOLE FILM. He's only cursed when he takes a medallion out of the chest right at the end.

Mistake Continuity: When Elizabeth faints and is falling into the water after Norrington's proposal, there's a shot of her from on the rock. You can see her hat and scarf falling right after. But when the shot moves to Jack and the two guards on the ship, Elizabeth is falling and there is nothing above her - where are the hat and the scarf? There is plenty of time to see the hat and scarf fall too, if they were actually included in the shot, but they simply weren't.

Mistake Continuity: At the end when Jack tosses the medallion to Will, Elizabeth is running towards them. It shows that she reached a certain point before he tossed the medallion. But when it cuts back to Elizabeth she is running the same space again.

Mistake Continuity: When Elizabeth and Jack are on the island drinking rum, the amount of rum in Jack's bottle changes between shots.

Mistake Continuity: At the very beginning of the film where we see Norrington walk up to the young Elizabeth at the front of the ship, the bow on his black hat is blowing in the sea wind, yet when he stops to talk to Elizabeth it is no longer blowing, then when he finishes talking to her, it is back blowing in the wind.

Mistake Continuity: At the beginning of the film when the young Elizabeth wakes up Will, then he faints, his head changes position between shots from being pointed slightly up, to resting on his shoulder. Also before he wakes up, his hand's distance from his head changes between shots.

Mistake Continuity: The pirates are running up the path towards the Governor's house. In her close-up, Elizabeth is looking down on them from the ledge outside her bedroom window, with the double full length doors. The camera pans the house after the pirates open the gate and Elizabeth is not seen outside any of the upper window ledges.

Mistake Continuity: Will has a small tear in his shirt at the right shoulder. Sometimes it's bigger, sometimes it's smaller, and the shape changes throughout the movie.

Mistake Continuity: As Jack and Will are duelling while standing on the cart, and then up on the beams, in wide shots, Will's hair is pulled back perfectly in the ponytail, but in the close-up shots he has loose hair on the sides that is not held in the ponytail. This type of thing occurs numerous times in the film.

Mistake Continuity: When Elizabeth is taken aboard the Black Pearl, Bo'sun slaps her face. Bo'sun's hand never makes any contact with Elizabeth's face, but the sound effect makes it very convincing. Also, in the first side shot of the slap, when Bo'sun starts to say, "You'll speak..." it's the back of her left hand that touches her cheek, and we can see the white corner of her night gown under the robe sleeve. In the next front shot, it's the palm of her hand that is touching her cheek now and the white night gown doesn't show at the sleeve.

Mistake Audio problem: Near the end of the film, Norrington and Jack are in a rowboat discussing an ambush of the Black Pearl's crew. Jack's line "Not if you're the one doing the ambushing" is very slightly out of sync with his mouth movements - his lips keep moving for a fraction of a second after he stops talking.

Mistake Continuity: Jack tosses the medallion to Will. After a shot of Will's hand catching it and Jack's reaction, in the front shot of Barbossa as he pulls out his gun, the leather strap is slung across his chest high up near his neck with the buckle at his lower left side. Yet in the close-up when he reveals the wound, the leather strap is lower on his chest and the buckle is now higher up at his right side.

Mistake Audio problem: At the blacksmith shop, just after Jack says, "You need to find yourself a girl mate," Jack pulls an all wood mallet from the wood ledge above and it actually makes a long metallic rasping sound, which is completely out of sync with the action! In a previous shot Will does a somersault and he grabs a sword hanging from the wood post. When he pulls it off the all wood ledge, it too makes a sharp metallic rasping sound. This is obviously done for dramatic effect.

Mistake Continuity: Before Elizabeth's blood ritual, Jack is rowing the boat into the cave and Will is holding the pole with the attached lantern. As Jack says, "Any man who falls behind, is left behind," Will is holding the pole with his left hand high up on the pole and his right down below. In the next shot, Will says, "No heroes amongst thieves," and Will's right hand is now high up on the pole.

Mistake Continuity: After the downing of the square rigged mast aboard the Interceptor, Jack spots the monkey running across it to the Black Pearl and he starts to follow. As Jack runs toward the mast in this shot, we see the broken end of the mast, rigging and sail that is lying at the Interceptor's rail. In the next shot, on Elizabeth's right the broken mast is seen with its rigging on it. The rigging is lying very differently on the mast in this shot than in the previous shot with Jack.

Mistake Revealing: During the first blood ritual and other moments in the film, you can tell that Geoffrey Rush's (Barbossa) eyes are yellowish only because he's wearing colored contact lenses.

Mistake Factual error: During the attack on Port Royal at the beginning of the movie, the guns on the Black Pearl are firing at a far greater elevation then they would have been able to at the time.

Mistake Revealing: After Will throws the small axe at the pirate and it hits him, he picks it up again and runs away. But the axe has no blood on it. The pirates do leave blood on weapons, as shown when Elizabeth stabs Barbossa later.
