Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (2003) - 139 minor mistakes
Directed by Gore Verbinski, starring Jack Davenport, Johnny Depp, Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Crook, Geoffrey Rush, Orlando Bloom, Jonathan Pryce
Please note: The sliding down the rope scene is perfectly possible - the link between Johnny Depp's handcuffs is long enough that he can fold it in half and sling the loop over the rope. Also Will's father - yes, he was still alive, stuck under the sea for 10 years attached to a cannon (or crushed to pieces - they comment on "the crushing black depths"). Not a mistake though. Most importantly, JACK ISN'T CURSED FOR THE WHOLE FILM. He's only cursed when he takes a medallion out of the chest right at the end.
Revealing: When the cannonball slams into the pirate at the Swann home, a wire visibly pulls on the back of his clothes and quickly propels him through the back doors. (Clearer in slow motion.) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: When Elizabeth is taken captive and escorted to the Black Pearl to meet Barbossa, the Moon comes out from behind the clouds, her captors should have changed into skeletons. They were escorting her to the ship and would have been exposed to the moonlight. Elizabeth should have first noticed then, not when Barbossa explains it to her later.
Continuity: While standing near the Aztec chest, Will says, "He didn't waste it," and in this shot there are two buttons closed on his vest, over the belt buckle. Yet, in the close-up of Will's hand dropping the two pieces of gold, there is only one button closed on his vest, over the buckle. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: In Port Royal, during the pirates looting, the sign comes crashing down onto Grapple, and Will says, "Good bye." In the next wide shot, behind Will to his left are a large and small barrel up against the wall, the large one being right in the corner. As a passing pirate hits Will on the head with a candlestick, in this shot both barrels are now further from the corner and closer to the door. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: As Will holds the sword above his head to block Grapple's grapnel, the cloth (the same one he wears around his neck when his sleeve is pulled down) that is tied around his right wrist is visible. He is soon rendered unconscious by a pirate's candlestick. When he wakes he puts his right hand to his aching head and the cloth's knot is visible. The cloth is wrapped completely differently in the two shots, though he never had the chance to change it. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: Just before Elizabeth whacks Jacoby, she asks, "You like pain?" and in the first shot as she starts to swing her hair has some waves and curl to it. Mid swing it cuts to the second shot, and when she says, "Try wearing a corset!" her hair is totally flat with no waves or curls whatsoever. Then, in the very next shot it's actually full, wavy and curly. Submitted by Rikki
Revealing: When Jack is aboard the Black Pearl, as Will makes demands we see Jack's very grimy hands and dirt embedded fingernails. Jack dives and retrieves his sword and gun underwater, and when he does the hands that lift the sword and gun underwater are perfectly clean and have very well manicured fingernails. Once on the island, his hands are as grimy as they were on the Pearl and his fingernails are once again short and dirty. Submitted by Rikki
Revealing: When Barbossa cuts Elizabeth's hand her nails are short. When Will rescues an unconscious Elizabeth at the cave, she reaches for the medallion and her nails are longer. When Will ties the cloth around Elizabeth's hand and she gives him the medallion, her nails are short. However, when Jack says, "Ahh, where's dear William?" her nails are now manicured and much longer. Once she's marooned on the island her nails are short again. Most scenes were filmed out of sequence, hence the difference in nail length. Her nails should have been kept the same short length for the duration of filming. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: Aboard the Pearl, Barbossa says, "Did you not notice? That be the same little island we made you governor of on our last little trip." While he says those words, 1st shot- the wind blows their hair the same way. 2nd shot- Jack's ponytail at the top of his head is blowing in a different direction. 3rd shot- the wind doesn't blow their hair at all. 4th shot- their hair is blowing just like in the second shot. 5th shot- the wind doesn't blow their hair at all again. Continuity: Will goes to the fort the morning after the pirate rampage in Port Royal. Will says, "We have to hunt them down. We must save her," and his shirt collar is very crooked. Governor Swann says, "If you have any information concerning..." and in this shot Will's collar and vest are straight. In the following shots the shirt collar is crooked again. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: After Norrington orders his men to take young Will below, in the next shot young Elizabeth stands at Dauntless' stern, in front of the mizzen mast and rigging, with the yard arms behind the mast way above her and its full sails. However, in the next close-ups the yard arm and sail are directly behind her, and the sails differ. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: At Isla de Muerta, whilst floating offshore in the rowboat, when Jack moves forward to sit beside Norrington and discuss the plan, Mullroy sits behind Jack. In Murtogg and Mullroy's close-ups the silver medallion on Mullroy's white strap is centered properly at his chest. However, in other shots that silver medallion is near his waist. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: Aboard the Pearl (before Elizabeth's blood ritual), in the exterior shot Elizabeth peers out the window which slants away from her right side - making it the right window of the port side, as she faces it. However, in the next interior shot she actually sits in front of the port side's left window, which slants away from her left side. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: Below deck aboard the Interceptor, Elizabeth gives Will the medallion. When Will clenches the medallion in his fist, the way the chain hangs down his fingers differs in this close-up and in the next shot, also showing his face. Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: After Will rescues Elizabeth and brings her aboard the Interceptor, in the first shot from behind Elizabeth, Anamaria isn't holding her hat and the pirate behind Mr. Cotton is holding the tail of the parrot to keep it still. In the next couple of shots from the side, Anamaria is holding her hat because it's so windy. Just before Mr. Gibbs says, "Keep to the code," the close-up on Anamaria shows her hands down again, with no wind. In the next wide shot, Anamaria is holding her hat again due to the wind. Continuity: Aboard the Black Pearl, when Jack is speaking with Barbossa in the Captain's stateroom, Jack takes a bite out of an apple, close to its stem, with the stem at the top. However, in the following shots, particularly when Barbossa and Jack are on deck, the angle, position, and appearance of the bite mark differ between shots. Submitted by Rikki
