The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) - 55 minor mistakes
Directed by Peter Jackson, starring Christopher Lee, Elijah Wood, Ian Holm, Ian McKellen, John Rhys-Davies, Miranda Otto, Orlando Bloom, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, Viggo Mortensen, Andy Serkis, Billy Boyd, Cate Blanchett, Dominic Monaghan, Hugo Weaving, Karl Urban, Bernard Hill, David Wenham, John Noble, Liv Tyler
Continuity: Deagol stands up on shore, raises up his right fist and in the wide shot there are blades of grass on his fingers. In the next close-ups while there are no grass blades, the tips of his fingers are visibly much cleaner than in the next wide shot as Deagol stares at the Ring in his palm with extremely muddy fingers. Yet in the next close-up of Deagol's fingers closing over the Ring, after Smeagol says, "Give us that, Deagol, my love," the fingers look the same as in the previous close-up. Continuity: As Gandalf et al. ride toward Isengard, Merry stands up on the stone wall and to his right the sword is leaning upright against the stone. In the second shot of Merry and Pippin, the sword is leaning down, over to the left. Then in the third shot of them, the sword is upright again. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Revealing: At Edoras, Merry and Pippin sing the song about the Green Dragon while dancing on the table. When Merry kicks Gamling's mug of ale off the table, Merry's foot gets thinner and partially disappears in this shot as does Pippin's foot in the next shot as he kicks up. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: The fray, size and shape of the rip on Frodo's knickers at his left knee changes throughout the film. For example it goes from large to small to large again, and so forth. Submitted by Rikki
Deliberate "mistake": After entering Minas Tirith with Faramir and his men, Faramir stares at Pippin who sits in front of Gandalf. In Pippin's close-up, one of Gandalf's hands hold his staff and the other is on Pippin. These are not Ian McKellan's (Gandalf) hands and this occurs quite a few times throughout the film, as when Gandalf yells, "Fool of a Took" and places his hand on Merry's shoulder. McKellan's hands are seen many times in the film and among the differences; he has age spots (the actor is currently in his sixties) on his hands. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: After telling Éowyn, "I cannot give you what you seek," Aragorn leads Brego away for his departure from Dunharrow and the edge of the rolled blanket, secured in the saddle bag on Brego's left, faces Brego. However, when Aragorn approaches Gimli the edge of that blanket, on Brego's left, now faces away from Brego. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: After Shelob retreats into her lair, Sam runs over to Frodo and begins to remove the webbing. In the first front shot we see Shelob's green blood on his hands. In the next shot from the side, the amount and shape of the blood on Sam's hands has changed. Then back to another front shot and the stains are the same as in the first shot. Continuity: At Isengard, Pippin reaches for the palantir in the water. In the first shot underwater, he clutches the palantir tightly with both hands and the lines in the palantir are vertical. In the next consecutive shot as he brings it up out of the water, still clutching it tightly, the lines are now horizontal in the Palantir. He did not shift the seeing-stone in his tight grip, it was just simply shot at different times. (These palantir's lines permanently encompass the circumference of the surface of the sphere, they do not change.) (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Revealing: In the scene where Denethor realises there is a huge army outside Minas Tirith, and he begins to scream 'Flee, flee for your lives!', as he turns round he is hit in the face by Gandalf's staff. If you slow down the shot of him being hit, you can see his reaction is slightly delayed as the staff 'hits' him, showing that it obviously didn't touch him. The same thing goes for when Shadowfax kicks him onto the fire later in the film. (Time)
Continuity: After the great battle in Pelennor fields when Pippin finds Merry under the Orc, Merry says, "I knew you'd find me," and you can see that Pippin has his hand under Merry's neck/head propping it up. Then, the shot pulls back to show both hobbits, and Merry says, "Are you going to leave me?" and now Pippin no longer has his hand under Merry's neck; he is sort of stroking his hair. (Time)
Continuity: In Edoras, after Gandalf lifts Pippin onto Shadowfax, as Gandalf says, "Three days ride..." Pippin's left hand is seen and the fingers are very short and very chunky - NOT because his fingers are clasped - it is obviously the scale double's hand in this specific shot. Then when Merry hands Pippin the pouch of Longbottom leaf, Pippin's left hand is seen again and Billy Boyd's hand and fingers are very thin and lanky. The two hands seen in these two consecutive shots quite obviously do not look anything alike. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: Éowyn removes her helmet and declares, "I am no man!" In the shot of her stabbing the Witch King, her hair on both sides is in front of her shoulders. However in the shots preceding and following this one, the hair on her left side is tucked behind her shoulder. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: During the siege of Gondor, when Pippin saves Gandalf by stabbing the Orc, he has to run forward to do so, and Gandalf turns to see what he has done. Despite this, when he says, 'Guard of the Citadel, indeed.' he turns backwards to look down at Pippin, although Pippin stepped back after stabbing the Orc it was only a few steps, and he should still be in front of Gandalf.
Continuity: Faramir and his men ride out of Osgiliath, and in the first wide shot their shadows are behind them. Thereafter as they ride, sometimes the shadow is directly below them, in front of them or to their left, and as Gandalf rides towards them, in one shot his shadow is in front of him to his left. Obviously filmed at different times of the day. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
Continuity: At Cirith Ungol, in the close-up of Frodo's face as Sam says, "I can carry it for a while," Frodo has prominent black smudges under his eyes, on his cheeks and nose. In the preceding and following close-up shots of Frodo, the smudges on his face are not nearly as dark. (Time) Submitted by Rikki
