Hollis Mulwray was killed by Noah Cross (Huston). Cross had planned to build the dam in his land so that the water would not benefit the city of Los Angeles, and he could sell the water to make a profit. Mulwray refused to co-operate and was killed. Jake Gittes (Nichsolson) soon discovers that Evelyn Mulwray (Dunaway) was Cross' daughter and she was raped by him. He also finds out the girl Evelyn kept looking after was her daughter/sister Katherine. Lt. Escobar (Lopez) and Det. Loach place Gittes under arrest for withholding evidence, but with the help of Curly (Young), Gittes manages to escape from them. Cross and Gittes meet up where Cross demands for Gittes to take him to Katherine, who Evelyn is trying to protect from Cross. In Chinatown, Cross catches Evelyn trying to escape with Katherine. Gittes tries to stop Evelyn from doing anything stupid, but Evelyn shoots at Cross to persuade him to stay away. As Evelyn drives off, Det. Loach shoots her in the head. Jake is calmly distraught and gets taken away by the police.
