Child's Play (1988) - 67 mistakes

Continuity: Opening scene where Chris Sarandon is chasing Brad Dourif into the toy store. During the gunfight, Sarandon has gloves on. As he enters the store he is wearing gloves. The next shot, the gloves are off. The next scene, the gloves are back on and he takes them off by biting the fingertips and pulling them off.

Continuity: When Andy pours the cereal, and then the milk, there is cereal on the counter, to the left of the bowl. There is loads of cereal on the counter, then when Andy puts the burnt toast onto a plate, there is much less cereal. Then when he takes the tray from the counter, there’s now loads of cereal on it.

Continuity: When Andy climbs aboard the train, we see in one shot the train has seven carriages. In the following shot the train has now got four carriages.

Continuity: Between shots when Maggie falls out of the window, the length of the wall in between the three windows increases. In the first shot the wall in between each window is half a brick long, In the wideshot the wall has increased to over a brick long. The whole arrangment of the bricks around the windows differs - obviously two different sets.

Revealing: When Andy upwraps his Good Guy doll, he says "A Good Guy! I knew it!", after he says this, you can see the shadow of a crewmember cast on Karens bare legs, moving around.

Continuity: After Chucky is set alight, as he knocks down the fireplace guard you can see both his shoes have come off. In the following shots as he climbs across the sofa, his shoes are back on.

Continuity: After Maggie has been killed, on the same night Karen talks to Andy about Chucky, telling him that he's just a doll. Karen then tucks Andy in bed. As she tucks him in, Chucky is on the right side of the bed and is falling off of the pillow, down by the side of it. Yet when it cuts to a closeup, Chucky is now perfectly positioned in the centre of the pillow.

Continuity: When Chucky's fried, decapitated body comes out of the vent and grabs hold of the policeman's neck, the policeman whirls around and knocks a basket and another object off of the TV. The shot goes to the other three, but when it goes back to Chucky and the cop, the items are back on the TV, untouched.

Visible crew/equipment: When Karen Barclay has Chucky trapped in the fireplace, and she is sitting on the floor holding the door/cage thing, you can see the puppeteer's hand controlling the Chucky puppet.

Continuity: When Maggie starts cleaning up the flour, she hears a noise and looks at the three blue flowerpots, and there is a wooden chair right beside them. Then when it cuts to Maggie getting up, the chair is now about a foot away from the flowerpots.

Audio problem: When Andy jumps on his Mums bed, on the morning of his birthday, he shouts “Wake up, Mummy, Wake up.” but his mouth doesn’t move

Continuity: When Aunt Maggie falls out the window, it is snowing. However, when she lands on the car, all the snow floating in the air has disappeared.

Continuity: When Andy is making his mum breakfast in bed, he takes some burnt toast out of the toaster and puts it onto a plate. He then scoops out a big lump of ice cream and puts it on the toast, and he then places the spoon onto the counter. In the next shot as he takes the tray away from the counter, the spoon has now jumped into the ice cream pot.

Continuity: When Andy returns to the apartment, he goes to his room and shuts himself in his spacious cupboard. In the cupboard there's a pile of toys including a red remote-control car, a baseball bat etc., and between shots the pile of toys changes. Eg. when Andy looks at the pile, the baseball bat is totally exposed, yet when he picks up the remote-control car the bat is wrapped in a sweater.

Continuity: When Karen brings Chucky to her apartment, she forces that he talks and he doesn't, so Karen goes to the kitchen for a glass of water, and as she walks to the kitchen you can see the TV in the lounge with nothing on top of it. Yet moments later, when Karen threatens to throw Chucky into the fireplace, there are books/videos/papers on top of the TV.

Continuity: When Chucky is electrocuting Dr. Ardmore, blood comes out of his mouth and eyes. Yet when Dr. Ardmore finally dies, there is no blood on or around his eyes.

Continuity: When Andy is about to brush his teeth, Maggie takes all of the bowls and plates from beside Andy’s birthday cake and starts putting them away in the cupboards. Then a few shots later, Maggie walks back to the birthday cake and picks up some more bowls/plates, which have appeared beside the cake.

Continuity: In the opening shot of the scene of Andy’s birthday, the camera pans across the Barclay’s living room and stops in front of the TV. The TV and cabinet sit right beside the window and curtain. Yet later when Andy looks at the Good Guys Doll Advert from the kitchen, the TV and cabinet are about two feet away from the window and curtain.

Continuity: In the police station Andy tries to make Chucky talk. He shakes him about, so that his hair gets all messy and sticks up. Yet when it cuts Chucky's hair is neat and combed.

Revealing: When Chucky follows Andy home and drops from the chimney and kicks the cover off, its obvious that this isn't Chucky and its a real person dressed as Chucky.

Plot hole: How would little Andy know how to get from the mental hospital to his house all alone?.

Continuity: When Karen throws Chucky across the room after he attacked her, she backs toward the wall and next to her is a fireplace set with four utensils in it (e.g. metal rod/poker/spade etc.) But in the next shot there are only two utensils in the set.

Continuity: As Maggie hears a noise as she's about to clean up the flour, she lowers the yellow-handled broom to the floor. It cuts, and you can see the yellow handle back up under Maggie's arm.

Continuity: After Andy has been taken away from Karen for a few days, Karen returns to her apartment with Chucky and demands the doll to speak. After Chucky remains silent, Karen removes her jacket and places it on the couch where it sits in a neat pile. Yet later when Karen returns to the lounge, the jacket is now positioned so half of it hangs over the back of the couch.

Visible crew/equipment: When Chucky has the voodoo doll of John, he walks along, then says “And you have a date with death!” After saying that, he turns, prior to stabbing the voodoo doll. After he says it, and turns, you can see the large, bald, shiny head of a puppeteer, crouched behind him!!

Continuity: When Chucky talks to John, as he stands on the counter, sometimes there are two red buttons on the top of his dungarees, sometimes there isn’t. They appear/disappear throughout the scene.

Continuity: Andy puts Chucky in a rocking chair that is missing a runner on one side, then he goes for a tinkle. Yet we then see Chucky has gone from the chair, and the chair is now rocking, with both the runners intact. Then later when Andy returns the runner is missing again.

Continuity: When Karen walks into Andy’s room and asks “Who are you talking to”, the blue cover on Andy’s bed lays only halfway down his bed. It then cuts to Andy, who says “Chucky”, and now the blue cover is pulled all the way up the bed, covering the pillows. The wooden beside cabinet that sits to the right of the bed, is about a foot away from the bed. When it cuts to Andy saying “Chucky”, the cabinet now sits right next to his bed. The lamp and jar of marbles that sit on top of the cabinet also move between these shots.

Continuity: When Maggie goes to pick Andy up and take him to bed, she walks over, and there is a box on the floor. In one shot she stands with one foot either side of box, standing over it. It cuts and the box has now moved to being beside her, and she no longer stands with it in between her feet. There is a saw laying on the floor from the “Good Guys Tool Box Set” which disappears between these two shots as well.

Revealing: When Andy is hit by the baseball bat by Chucky you can see that the bat doesn't make contact with him.

Continuity: When Aunt Maggie goes to pick up Andy and take him to bed, the cushion on the couch that Chucky is propped against, goes from sitting upright against the arm of the couch, to laying down on the couch between shots.

Continuity: After Chucky walks out of the fire (after being set on fire) he crawls over the couch then falls down and his head falls off. Then in the next scene his head is back on.

Continuity: In Karen's bedroom, when Chucky is shot in the leg he flies near the window, and there is a dresser table right beside the window. But minutes earlier, when Mike entered the room and the camera panned around the room, the dresser table was a couple of feet away from the window.

Continuity: At the end, when Andy's mom shoots Chucky for the first time, it doesn't really faze him; he just keeps walking. But in the bedroom, when she shoots him through the heart, the bullet impact causes him to fly several feet through the air.

Continuity: When Andy is making his mum breakfast in bed, there is a glass of orange juice on the breakfast tray. During shots in the scene, the amount of juice in the tray changes. As he carries the tray to his mum's room, he keeps spilling juice out of the glass, yet in following shots the juice is either at the same level, or is even higher than before, etc.

Other: In the scene where Maggie is carrying Chucky into Andy's room with Andy, you can see the arm of the doll has popped out of it's socket in one shot, as the material of the shirt is stretched far beyond it should be. It is back to normal in all other shots.

Factual error: When Maggie falls out of the kitchen window - First of all, she supposedly falls because she stumbles backwards, startled or hurt from the hammer wound on her head. But there's no way she could stumble backward and gain enough force to hurtle through the window the way she does - it would be hard to throw yourself out the window and gain as much force as Maggie did. Also, she falls out the window backwards, meaning face up as she falls. Yet when they cut to an outside shot, somehow she's miraculously reversed to face down. A miracle in physics.

Continuity: Just before Chucky stabs the voodoo doll, the black ribbon tied around the doll is different between the two shots in which he stabs it. The material is different, the way it's tied, and the position it lays too.

Continuity: When Dr. Ardmore tries to give Andy the injection, Andy struggles from his grip and then grabs his glasses from his face. Then in the next shot of him, his glasses are back on his face. In the following shot they've gone again.

Continuity: As Andy talks to Dr. Ardmore through the bars in the door at the institution, sometimes Andy's right hand is gripping the wooden door, sometimes not.

Deliberate "mistake": In the scene where Mike is in the car and Chucky attacks him, pulling the skipping ropes around his neck and stabbing a knife through the carseat etc., in all the wideshots of the car driving, the stunt driver wearing what looks like a black woolly hat replacing Mike is blatant.

Continuity: When Karen struggles to keep the door shut, as Chucky tries to pull it open, Chucky stabs his knife through the door, cutting Karen's hand. Between shots the hole made by the knife gets mysteriously longer, and all the holes Chucky makes in the door seem to change shape/size/location. Also, when Chucky stabs through the door, cutting Karen, a small stain of blood is left on the door. Between three consecutive shots the blood is there, then disappears then reappears.

Continuity: Karen, Andy and Mike are shut in Karen's bedroom and Chucky has the opportunity of getting into the bedroom via two doors - a door leading to the hallway, or a door leading to the bathroom. The door leading to the hallway has a key in it, on the side of the door facing INTO Karen's bedroom. Yet later, Chucky runs down the hallway facing the outside of Karen's bedroom door, and first there is no key in the keyhole. Yet when Chucky smashes the door open, there is now a key in the keyhole on the outside of Karen's bedroom door.

Continuity: In the apartment, Chucky nearly transfers his soul into Andy, until Karen and Mike come and save Andy. Karen then takes off her coat and puts it over Andy, who lays on the floor. In a wideshot, when Mike gives Karen his gun, the coat lays about halfway up his body, yet when it cuts to a closeup we see the coat laying over his body all the way up to his neck.

Continuity: When Karen and Mike Norris talk in the graffitied room, and Mike tells Karen information about Chucky, in every back shot of Karen, a black handbag strap hangs on her left shoulder, yet in every front shots it isn't there. It appears/disappears/reappers several times.

Continuity: After escaping from the institute, Andy goes back to the apartment. When he gets through the front door, he picks the big blue rug up from the floor and tosses it to the right of the door in a heap, then drags a bench and pushes it against the front door. Yet later, Karen and Detective Norris arrive at the front foor, then smash through it. When they smash through it, Norris rolls to the floor and you can see the big blue rug now laid out perfectly in front of the door.

Continuity: When Chucky peers through the window of the institute, he sees the keys on the table. The black telephone on the table moves from being against the wall, to sitting out halfway on the desk between shots.

Continuity: When Karen talks to John as he's dying on the floor, sometimes Johns hand is on Karens arm and sometimes it isn't. Also, Johns hands are covered in blood, yet when he touches Karens coat no blood is there in following shots.

Continuity: When Karen and Detective Norris arrive at Johns home, Karen runs to John, who is lying on the floor, bleeding, and she kneels down to speak to him. In one shot, she kneels and her arms are by her side and her handbag hangs over her left shoulder. It cuts and now her left hand is resting on Johns neck, and her handbag has disappeared from her shoulder.

Continuity: When Chucky talks to John, he sits on a counter talking to him, and there is a cupboard to the left of the window above the counter, and the cupboard doors are closed. Yet later when Chucky stands up, he stands near the cupboard and says "You got me into this, you get me out!", and you can see behind him the cupboard door is now wide open. Also, to the right of the window are three pots/jugs. These change position between two shots, and one of the pots disappears.

Continuity: Karen threatens to throw Chucky in the fireplace if he doesn't speak, and then suddenly Chucky comes to life and starts to thrash and kick in Karens arms. Karen has her hands under Chuckys arms, and in one shot Karen lowers her left hand from under his arm. It cuts, and her left hand is suddenly back under his arm.

Continuity: When Andy makes his Mum breakfast, he pours the cereal and then puts the box down so we can see the front of the box. Then as he pours the milk, it cuts to the TV, then cuts back and he is still pouring, yet now we see the back of the cereal box, and the sugar pot that was right beside the cereal box has now moved to being beside the other pot.

Revealing: In the scene where Andy's aunt is sitting on the couch and Chucky runs by, look closely, you can see it's not Chucky but it is a person.

Continuity: When Dr. Ardmore is trying to give Andy the injection, the syringe he has is in his left hand, then disappears when he tries to take Andy's coat off, then reappears in his right hand.

Continuity: The drink Andy makes changes colour.

Revealing: When Mike is in the car being attacked by Chucky, after he hits a metal can and makes sparks, he swerves violently in the road, and on the road you can see several pairs of dark skidmarks in the exact same place as he swerves, obviously from previous takes.

Continuity: In Karen's apartment, Mike Norris gets slashed on the back of his leg, well below his knee, by Chucky with his knife. Yet later in Karen's room, Mike makes out as if the cut is well above his knee, and that is where his leg is bandaged.

Visible crew/equipment: At the end of the film, the burnt head and body of Chucky are thrown across Karens bedroom, below the window. The body then twitches, the suddenly jumps up. The body's (one) leg actually doesn't touch the ground! The body rises with no real support, so if you look under the body, you can clearly see a black rod/sheet (coming from through the carpet), pushing the burnt body up!

Continuity: When Karen and Maggie go to the peddler in the back alley, as they approach the peddler, the large dumpster behind the peddler has it's lid halfway open. Yet when it cuts to them reaching him, the dumpster is closed. Cardboard boxes piled up to the left of the dumpster also appear between the same shots.

Continuity: After Detective Morris saves Karen from the peddler, Morris walks away, and Karen grabs him and says "Goddamn it, my son's life is at stake! What was it?", and Karens handbag strap which is hanging over her left shoulder, falls all the way down her arm. Yet when it cuts to a back shot, the strap is back over her shoulder.

Continuity: The position of the spilt flour on the floor differs from when the camera first pans to it, to when Maggie gets the broom and dustpan and begins to clean it up.

Continuity: When Andy is making his Mum breakfast, the red lid on milk bottle disappears in a close-up of Andy pouring his Good Guys cereal into a bowl, yet the lid is on the milk bottle in the previous and following shots.

Continuity: When Chucky is finally shot at the end of the film, his body falls to the floor, slanted on it's side and then dies. Yet seconds later when Andy looks at the remains of Chucky, Chucky's body is now sitting upright against the wall.

Continuity: When Andy takes Chucky to Eddie Caputo's home, Andy stops off for a tinkle, putting Chucky on a rocking chair. We then see a view of Eddie Caputo's home, and there are wooden items and various junk lying around near the bottom of his front steps and yard. Yet seconds later when the camera pans up to the front stairs as if it's in the POV of Chucky running, nearly all the items have disappered.

Continuity: When Mike Norris opens Karen's bedroom door, looking for Chucky, the camera pans around Karen's room and on top of her TV you can see a wicker basket, some books and a vase. Yet later when Chucky finally gets into the bedroom and chases Karen and Andy, and in following scenes, the vase has gone from the top of the TV.

Continuity: When the Good Guys Doll advert is playing on the Barclay's TV, in wideshots there is a box on top of the TV, yet in closeups of the TV the top of the TV has nothing on it.

Continuity: When Andy makes his mum breakfast, he puts burnt toast onto a plate then puts a big lump of ice-cream on a slice of toast. Then when Andy pulls the tray from the counter, the ice-cream rolls off of the slice of toast, onto the plate. Then when Andy walks to his mum's room, the ice-cream has jumped back onto the slice of burnt toast.
