The man who plays Ian's friend Mike is played by Ian Gomez, who is Nia Vardalos' husband in real life.
Because of the popularity of the film, a television series titled, "My Big Fat Greek Life" acts as a sequel to it. Unfortunately, due to low ratings and poor reviews, the series was cancelled after several episodes.
After surpassing "The Blair Witch Project" in October 2002, the film became the highest grossing independent film of all time until "The Passion of the Christ" in March 2004. It took more than five months to reach that goal, as the film was originally released in the United States on April 21, 2002 and had a limited release.
Because of his commitment to the show "Lucky," John Corbett was unable to reprise his role of Ian Miller in the film's spin-off, "My Big Fat Greek Life."
In the Easter scene, Aunt Voula comes over to Ian and Toula and says to Ian, "Let me touch your hair". This was not in the script. Voula forgot her lines and immediately came up with the hair improv.
Nia Vardalos originally conceived "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" as a one-woman play.
