Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan (1989) - 95 mistakes

Continuity: By the radio on Jim's boat is a bottle with a boat in it and the cork in the bottle is pointing to the left side. When Suzi gets up to check on the noise, the bottle is visible and the cork is now pointing to the right side.

Revealing: When Jason kills the boat captain he comes up way short of making contact with the captain's throat. He's probably a good 2 inches away from it. It definetly doesn't help that this scene is in slow motion either...

Revealing: As Sean dives into the water to save Rennie, in all the overhead shots Rennie has dry, curly hair, but in closeups her hair is soaked down straight. In the overhead shots it's obviously a stunt double.

Revealing: Throughout the movie, the black cloth covering Jason's eyes under the hockey mask is really noticeable, especially when he grabs onto the rope to climb aboard the Lazarus.

Continuity: When Jason grabs the man in the diner he is several paces to the right of the mirror, but when he throws the man into the mirror Jason can clearly be seen in the reflection standing right across from it.

Revealing: When Jason strangles Eva, you can see where the rotten flesh makeup ends on his arm, and that the rest is just a fabric sleeve.

Revealing: In the scene in which Jason kills the captain of the boat, it seems as though Jason uses the wrong side of the blade to cut the captain's throat.

Continuity: There is a large blue cooler by the stairs in the boat, under two postcards. But in the shot where Jason clips the harpoon, before shooting it, we can see the cooler has vanished.

Continuity: In the scene where Tamara gets out of the shower, her silk gown which hangs on the handrail changes position between shots.

Continuity: When Wayne is taping J.J., between shots his left hand moves from down by his side, to on the focus of his camera.

Visible crew/equipment: When the boxing scene starts, as the camera pans past the punchbag, the shadow of the camera is clearly cast on it. Then as the camera continues to pan past the punchbag, you can see the sides of two crewmembers come into view (who are following the path of the camera.) They are both wearing a jumper and jeans.

Visible crew/equipment: When Rennie is searching for Toby, the camera then pans to the games room, and reflected in the four pictures hanging up on the wall is a crewmember giving Jason a signal to come on cue.

Visible crew/equipment: As Jason is walking down some steps, a little after he kills J.J., you can see the shadow of a crewmember pushing equipment, cast on the wall.

Continuity: The shards of glass around the porthole change between shots, as Jason attacks Rennie.

Plot hole: How would Jim have been able to get that hockey mask? it even has the replica axe mark from where Jason was hacked in Part III by Chris.

Continuity: After Tamara comes out of the the shower she is completely dry.

Revealing: During the credits, in the shot of the diner, the asian man sitting to the right glances right at the camera.

Continuity: When the blonde girl gets out of the shower right before Jason stabs her with the mirror blade, she exits the shower dry as a bone. She should of been glistening or have water dripping off of her.

Continuity: When Sean is given the present by his father, there is a polystyrene pad next to the computer navigator, which is sticking out. In the next shot it's pushed in neatly.

Factual error: In relation to the position of the sewage workers shadow, and the way Jason kills him, there is no way that the splatter of blood would have hit the wall the way it does. In addition the blood looks like paint.

Revealing: Throughout, through Jason's ripped-up gloves, you can see pink, human fingers. Jason's whole body should be rotting and corpse-like, and regeneration isn't a correction.

Visible crew/equipment: When Tamara pushes Rennie, as Rennie starts to fall you can see a crewmembers hands reach out to catch her. Look close and you can even see the red tee-shirt sleeve of the person.

Continuity: The towel on the guy's head in the sauna changes position between the shots.

Visible crew/equipment: When everyone is getting off the ship and into the small boat, it's raining. Jason is looking down at them - right when he is looking down you can see above him the sprinkler making the rain.

Plot hole: In Part VII Jason's clothes were shredded and you could see his spine, kneecaps, etc. but now his clothes appear almost intact.

Visible crew/equipment: When Sean finds Rennie in the alley recliner and kneels down to comfort her, there is a clear shadow of equipment on his jacket sleeve.

Continuity: When McCulloch and Miss Van Deusen enter the cabin where everyone else is, they have just been out in the rain, but they are perfectly dry.

Revealing: You can see a faint red line on the Captain's neck, before it is cut.

Continuity: After Jason kicks the teens radio to the floor, they stand up, and the street behind them has a lot of cars on it. In the next shot, as Jason shows them his face, the street is now totally empty.

Continuity: When Rennie and Sean walk out of the subway onto the streets, they walk across the metal grids on the floor twice.

Continuity: As Julius punches Jason on the roof, they pass the same skylight twice.

Revealing: When Tamara pushes Rennie overboard, the water is calm and there are no waves.

Revealing: When Jason starts to strangle Eva in the disco room, a blue strobe light suddenly starts to flash. If you look behind Eva in one shot, you can see the actual strobe light come into the shot, obviously being held by a crewmember.

Continuity: As the water gushes out of the engine room, Rennie and Sean get totally soaked. They run upstairs and now their clothes are completely dry.

Continuity: When Jason is walking down the stairs toward J.J. his left foot comes off the last step but in the next shot it's his right.

Continuity: The black sludge on the girl's white pants when she's in the sewer at the end is constantly changing. It sometimes changes position or isn't there at all in later shots. The best example is when she lures Jason away from the guy that just got knocked out and runs into the dead end. She slides down the wall next to the toxic chemical container and the back and sides of her pants are completely covered in the black sludge, when she runs away, her pants are totally clean.

Continuity: When Jason attacks the white boxer in the sauna he rams the hot coal into his stomach right above his belly button. However in the overhead shot, the coal is jammed into the middle of his chest.

Continuity: When the two girls are sniffing cocaine their hair changes positions.

Continuity: In part 7, Tina uses her powers to split the hockey mask in two. In some shots you can see the straps of the mask cut into the back of Jason's head, leaving large cut marks. However in this movie when the mask is removed, the cut marks are not there.

Revealing: When Jason breaks through the glass trying to get to Rennie it is funny to see that the glass is just plastic. It is most noticeable when Jason is moving his head, the glass bends.

Revealing: In the scene when the crazy guy is hit in the back with the axe, when he falls, the axe sways side to side a little bit, then stops a couple inches of center from before.

Revealing: Flammable liquid is visible over the floor, in the shot of the flames in the engine room.

Continuity: When Rennie raises her hands and notices the blood on them, the position of blood on them changes in the next shot.

Continuity: The position of the towels on Rennie's shoulders change.

Continuity: The position of the black glove on J.J.'s left hand changes between shots as she switches off the tape while playing her guitar up on the deck.

Audio problem: When Jim says "Gotta throw the anchor over" his mouth is slow and out of sync.

Continuity: When the boat is sailing along, it reaches the 'Camp Crystal Lake' sign. When Jim throws the anchor over, it should have sailed well past it, but it has actually gone backwards.

Continuity: When Rennie is being pushed overboard, notice the guys sitting in the background wearing a blue shirt. When it cuts from below the ship, as we see Rennie falling, the guy is gone. Also when Miss Van Deusen goes for the life ring, we see from below the ship that the guy is gone. But when it cuts he is there again.

Continuity: When Sean, Rennie and the sewage worker walk down the sewers, in frontal shots and reverse shots, the sewage worker repeatedly changes from holding his flashlight by his side / out in front.

Visible crew/equipment: After the police car is crashed, as it goes up in flames you can see a thick black wire trailing up into the police car's boot, which wasn't there before.

Continuity: When we see Jason lying on the bottom of the lake, we also see some chains lying around. At first we see the upper chain lying out on the edge of a plank. But when Jason gets electricity through him we see the chain has moved in to the middle of the plank.

Continuity: After Wayne shoots his friend, he looks through his camera. The timer on the camera reads "20:19." It cuts to another angle of Wayne, then back. The camera still reads "20:19" even though a few seconds passed in the other shot.

Revealing: As Jason brings his arm back to punch Julius, the back of his neck obviously buckles like a rubber mask.

Factual error: When Jason pushes Julius overboard, he would have drowned within minutes. No one can stay underwater that long without drowning.

Continuity: As Jason is dunking McCulloch in a barrell of toxic waste, a big wet stain of sludge on McCulloch's trouser, to the left, disappears between shots.

Continuity: In the streets, Rennie and Sean run past a group of teens, and behind them, look at the "Howard Johnson" sign. It is dark and unlit. But when Jason passes them, it is lit up. When Jason then turns and shows the teenagers his face, the sign is once again unlit.

Revealing: When the deckhand falls to the floor, you can clearly see the square outline of the equipment holding the axe in his back.

Continuity: When Jason grabs the policeman, the policeman's hat falls to the floor. In the next shot it's back on his head.

Continuity: As Miles is climbing up the mast, the flags hanging to his right change between shots.

Visible crew/equipment: When Julius' head falls into the dumpster, a black cord can be seen pulling the lid down.

Continuity: The position of the hot rocks in the wooden box, and the position of the spoon in the bucket changes through the sauna scene.

Visible crew/equipment: When Eva is in the disco, after Jason bursts in, as she pulls at the second locked door, you can see the reflection of two crewmember's faces in the silver disco pole.

Visible crew/equipment: When Sean and Rennie comes up the stairs just before finding Sean's dead father, as the camera moves backwards, you can see the camera's shadow on the wall to the right.

Continuity: When Rennie gets the present from Sean, she opens it twice in two shots.

Factual error: When J.J. sees Jason she drops her guitar running away. The guitar then feedbacks. But when J.J. confronts Jason again he has the guitar with him, unplugged, but still we hear the sound of feedback.

Continuity: When the boxer is boxing with Jason, you see that his hands get cut up and are bleeding heavily during the fight. He continues punching Jason in the mask, but never leaves a drop of blood on it.

Factual error: When Jason slashed the captain's throat, blood should have gushed out immediately.

Revealing: When Sean and Rennie run through the two glass doors leading down into the New York subway system, you can see Jason's shadow on the wall as he stands off camera and waits for his cue to walk on screen and kick his way through the glass doors.

Revealing: Obvious dummies in the car's back seats just before it slams into the wall.

Revealing: When Jason throws Wayne into the electrical switchboard, Wayne's jeans catches fire before he even hits the board.

Continuity: When Rennie and Sean are on the ladder in the sewer Rennie's position changes between shots.

Revealing: During the part where J.J. goes down to the boiler room to play her guitar, Jason sneaks up behind her. She screams and runs down more stairs, and then right before Jason kills her, as he lifts the guitar to hit her, in the lower right hand of the screen you can see the blood coming out of the guitar BEFORE it hits her.

Continuity: When Rennie goes to the bathroom after the scene where she gets thrown overboard, her hair is still wet but her clothes are completely dry.

Continuity: In the police car Rennie jumps into the driver's seat and drives off, while the other three stay in the back. After the car crashes, Sean has suddenly moved to the passenger seat.

Continuity: When Jason, as a kid, comes out of the mirror and grabs Rennie by her throat, Jason's grip on her throat differ between the shots.

Revealing: When Rennie is pushed overboard the ship stays in the exact same place, as if it is docked. In reality the boat would have sailed on, leaving Rennie behind.

Continuity: When Rennie gets up and walks over to the closet, you can see some items on the side, such as a decorated silk cloth, a bag etc. When Jason then looks through the porthole into Rennie's room, the position of all the items are different.

Visible crew/equipment: Rennie and Sean get onto a train, Rennie spots Jason standing behind a door. When it does a closeup of Jason, reflected in the bottom left hand corner of the glass is a crewman with headphones on.

Continuity: Not long into the movie, Reni is looking for her dog. Next time we see the dog, it is on her lap in the life boat. Between these two scenes they never show her finding the dog: it just appeared out of nowhere.

Revealing: When Jason breaks his hand through the door its really strange how his hand makes a perfect square on the broken door. Telling that the door was already broken and then repaired loosely for the stunt.

Revealing: When Jason is resurrected in the lake, the water is quite well lit, even though it's night and there aren't any real light sources to light the lake up.

Revealing: When Rennie crashes the police car into the wall, the explosion clearly occurs before the car even comes into contact with the wall.

Revealing: Flammable liquid is clearly visible on Wayne's jeans, when he is thrown into the switchboard, and caught on fire.

Continuity: When Toby turns up at the end, in the street, in the first shot of him his shadow is short. In the next shot it's very long.

Audio problem: When J.J. is jammin' to her song she notices Jason and screams. She then runs away, and magically the song that was playing on her tape player has stopped.

Continuity: After Jim is stabbed, he smears blood over a window. Later when we see the boat drifting towards the harbour, we see the window and the smears of blood are now much different.

Continuity: The arrow that Jason shoots at Suzi which hits the wall beside her changes angle when he rips it out of the wall.

Continuity: In the film Sean and Rennie are on board the Lazarus. Sean puts both of his hands into his jacket pocket to get Rennie's gift. He never hands it to her, but In the next shot she has it in her hands.

Continuity: In the film Jason kills the guy in the sauna with a hot coal into his stomach, and there's no blood. When Jason leaves you can see the guys chest and now it's covered with blood.

Revealing: When we see a wide shot of the ship in the storm we can see the ship slide through the waves untouched by them. It's obvious the scene is fake.

Visible crew/equipment: After Rennie and Sean pull the emergency break on the train, and get off, Jason follows. As he exits through the door, in the window to the viewers left is a reflector screen clearly reflected.

Continuity: When Susie hears a noise, Jim investigates wearing jeans and no shirt. When he returns, he is wearing a top. And then in the next shot, he is shown getting into bed wearing only underwear.

Factual error: The amount of people on the ship is very unrealistic. Although the low number of people is to benefit the plot, there should have been cooks, waiters, deckhands, boiler room engineers, cleaners etc.

Plot hole: Okay. Jason all of a sudden can drive a boat and out of nowhere, seems to know about a cruise ship filled with teenagers ready for him to kill. Yeah, makes sense to me. Especially since there is land with buildings right where Jim and Suzie drop anchor on their boat. Jason gives up killing people in those buildings to drive to a cruise ship that he cannot possibly know about? Also the fact that the survivors get to New York and minutes later Jason just happens to pop out of the water? Are we led to believe that he not only learned how to swim to New York but he managed to not kill everyone while they were in the life raft?

Revealing: When Tamara is thrown into the mirror, in the reflection you can tell that it is a stunt-woman.
