Pinocchio (1940) - 51 mistakes

Audio problem: When Honest John tells Gideon to take notes, Gideon throws his stick aside, but there is no sound of it hitting the ground.

Continuity: When Pinocchio is locked up in the cage of Stromboli, Jiminy goes inside the cage lock, and he hangs his coat and hat on the outside of the lock. In the next shot, they have disappeared.

Continuity: When Pinocchio becomes tangled up with the Russian marionettes, two extra marionettes appear. There were five marionettes dancing around on stage, but he becomes entangles in seven.

Continuity: In the scene where Pinocchio talks to Stromboli inside the wagon, many of the items on the table disappear, reappear, and change position constantly.

Continuity: As Jiminy falls down the pool pocket, he falls with a black 8-ball and a yellow 1-ball, but when it cuts the yellow 1-ball is now a red 3-ball.

Continuity: Pinocchio burns his left hand with the candle, yet suddenly it's his right hand that's burnt, and that is put in the water.

Continuity: The lock on Pinocchio's cage changes from the right side to the left in different shots.

Continuity: When Jiminy earns his badge, in one shot it is mostly over his red shirt, but in the next it is mostly over his black jacket.

Continuity: When Honest John holds his notepad in his hand, their is a hole in the thumb of his glove. Then when John gives Pinocchio his "ticket" the hole is gone.

Continuity: On Pleasure Island, Lampwick uses a match to make a scratch on the Mona Lisa. The length of this scratch changes between shots.

Continuity: The patches on Jimminy Cricket's hat change size, color, location, etc. throughout the entire movie.

Continuity: In the opening shot of Jiminy singing, a spotlight is focused on him, however he casts no shadow onto it. It cuts to a closeup and he suddenly does.

Continuity: When Lampwick says "Ah, you smoke like your grandmother" the white pool ball has moved to the other side of the table from where it was when Lampwick made his last shot.

Continuity: Close to the end, Pinocchio is lying unconscious on the bed. In one shot, his hand is lying entirely on one of the white patches of the blanket. In a later shot, his hand is half on a blue patch, half on a white one.

Audio problem: When Gepetto is fishing inside Monstro's belly, his lips do not move when he exclaims "Here's another one!" or "I got it!"

Continuity: When Lampwick sprouts a tail, the patch on the seat of his trousers has stitches around it. These stitches disappear moments later.

Continuity: When Jiminy is reading the letter that the dove delivered, the length of the text on the bottom line changes between shots.

Continuity: When Pinocchio is talking with Stromboli, there is a bag of gold on the tables with coins spilling out of it. But after Stromboli locks Pinocchio in the cage and comes back to the table, the bag is empty and lying on top of the coins.

Continuity: When Pinocchio talks with Stromboli, Stromboli takes a bite from an onion and still holds the bitten onion in his hand. It cuts to a wider view and the onion has vanished.

Continuity: When Jiminy Cricket is singing at the beginning, his umbrella appears from nowhere in a closeup.

Continuity: When we first see Gepetto inside Monstro's belly, he's wearing stockings and shoes. However, when Monstro sneezes and everyone escapes, he's barefoot, but there's no time for him to them off.

Continuity: Jiminy puts a rock in his pants to act as a balast while they're under water. It makes his pants hang low. In the next shot showing Jiminy, the rock is gone, and his pants are normal again.

Continuity: The belt holding Pinocchio's book together disappears when Honest John trips him.

Continuity: When Lampwick is playing pool, the blue ball moves closer to the edge of the table between shots. Other balls change position as well during this scene.

Continuity: When Jiminy falls off the pool table and lands on the ground, his umbrella is not in his hand. Then a second later, he has it again.

Continuity: When Pinocchio is tying a rock to his tail at the edge of the cliff, there are two little rocks next to the big rock. Then when Pinocchio jumps off the cliff, the two small rocks are gone.

Continuity: When Stromboli leaves his wagon the bolts on the door are totally different than they are when Jiminy Cricket enters the wagon. In addition, the items on either side of the door change too.

Continuity: When the fat guy orders his men to close the doors to Pleasure Island, the small metal bar at the bottom of the door that is there when Jiminy Cricket comes later is gone.

Continuity: The stripes on the gloves of many of the main characters sometimes are black and sometimes white with black outlines.

Continuity: When the fat guy drops his big bag of gold onto the table, it lands a good distance from the smaller bag and many of the coins spill out onto the table. In the last shot of this scene, as the camera zooms out of the bar, the bags are closer together than before, and the coins are gone.

Continuity: When Pinocchio says he is going home, Stromboli starts laughing. Pinocchio asks if he thinks that's funny, and he replies, "Sure." In this shot, there is a gold coin on top of Stromboli's knife, but in the next shot it's gone.

Continuity: In the beginning, Gepetto has to go upstairs from his workshop to get to his bed. But when Pinocchio looks inside later on, the bed and the workshop are on the same floor.

Continuity: In the opening shot of Lampwick playing pool, there is no black 8-ball on the table, however when it cuts to a closer view after Lampwick pockets a ball, the 8-ball has appeared, in a previously 8-ball-free area.

Continuity: As Gepetto finishes painting Pinocchio, he gives him a simple one lined smile, however it cuts and Pinocchio suddenly gains two small lines at both ends of this one smile line and a little chin line.

Continuity: When Pinocchio burns his finger, Geppetto runs over and grabs Pinocchio and starts running around looking for water. Watch Geppetto's hat throughout this scene. It disappears then appears over and over.

Continuity: When Pinocchio first performs, singing "I've got no strings.." as he falls down the stairs, the red feather in his hat jumps from the left side, to the right side, and then back to the left.

Revealing: When Pinocchio gets in bed with Gepetto and Figaro, Gepetto puts out the light of the candle. If you watch closely, the light goes out a split second early.

Factual error: The copper pot Jiminy looks into shows his reflection at a larger size. It should be reflected at a smaller size though.

Continuity: When Pinocchio falls down while performing onstage, his nose gets stuck in a hole on one of the boards. This hole disappears later in the show.

Continuity: When Stromboli's wagon goes by Geppetto in the street, the lantern attached at the end of it that was there when Jiminy hopped onto the wagon and when he and Pinocchio get off it later has vanished.

Continuity: When Figaro is in his little bed, between shots when it cuts from him, to Pinocchio, then back to him, the patches on his patchwork quilt change in colour and size.

Continuity: The stones Cleo pushes up in her bowl while inside Monstro's stomach disappear in later shots.

Continuity: While Pinocchio is chatting with Stromboli, the feather that is normally on his left side of the hat, is on his right side in several shots. After that, it's back on his left side.

Continuity: When Pinocchio is given his book for the first time, you can tell there are no letters on it. Later, when Honest John looks at it, the letters ABC have appeared.

Continuity: Jiminy's umbrella changes from red to purple and back quite often during the movie.

Continuity: When Jimminy falls down the pool hole, there is a card at the edge of the table. When he comes back up, the card has been replaced by a die.

Continuity: When Jiminy runs into the pool room and finds Pinocchio changing into a donkey, there is a small pot next to the door. When they both run out of the room, the pot is gone.

Continuity: When Pinocchio takes a big puff of his cigar, the label is smoked off, but a few moments later the label is back on the cigar.

Continuity: When Jiminy Cricket finds Pinocchio playing pool, the 8 on the ball is facing away from Pinocchio. Then when Jiminy hops on it and starts complaining, the 8 is facing towards Pinocchio.

Audio problem: When the fox drops the bag of gold on the table, you can hear it hit the table before it actually does.

Continuity: When Pinocchio's nose has grown so long that there is a nest at the end, he shakes it and the laves fall off of all but one branch. But a couple seconds later, there are leaves on two of the branches.
