Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone (2001) - 62 with pictures

Revealing: Dumbledore, McGonagall and Hagrid leave baby Harry on the Dursley's doorstep. When the shot opens in the first close-up of the baby, as Dumbledore places the envelope on the blanket, though a good portion of his forehead is visible, the scar is not there. In his next close-up, it is very apparent, due to the position of the scar, that part of it should have been visible on his forehead in the previous close-up.

Continuity: After Dudley shouts, "Wake up, Potter! We're going to the zoo," he pushes Harry back into the cupboard and runs into the kitchen. When he opens the door, the kitchen floor is visible and there are no floor mats. Yet, once Harry walks into the kitchen there is a taped black mat on the floor at the door and another black mat at the counter, under the stools that were visible in the previous shot, when Petunia bangs on the cupboard door. (This does not refer to the reddish mat Dudley stands on.)

Visible crew/equipment: When Oliver Wood is explaining Quidditch to Harry, he struggles to put the Bludger back in the trunk. You can see a rod under the trunk lift and shake it, so the Bludgers appear to be moving on their own.

Visible crew/equipment: Petunia has her hands on Dudley's eyes as they walk towards all of his birthday gifts. When she removes her hands from Dudley's eyes, in this shot and in the next, the long black microphone wire as well as its tape, which obviously peeled free, are blatantly visible and are sticking out at the neckline of her v-neck top under the pearl necklace. It's gone in the following shots. (Do not confuse the blue apron strings for the mic wire.)

Continuity: When Dudley is told how many presents he has, and he asks, "How many are there?" a cut to him shows that his fringe is a bit untidy. Scene cuts to his Dad. When it cuts back to Dudley, his fringe is much neater.

Visible crew/equipment: Petunia and Dudley enter the house when they return from the zoo, followed by Vernon and Harry. The crew's equipment is plainly visible on the ground beyond the doorway. Also, the pavement at the threshold extends far beyond the doorway and just before Vernon walks into the house, Vernon is visibly coming from the side of the doorway. In the earlier exterior shot when they stand by the car before they leave, as Vernon says, "I'm warning you now boy...," not only is the ground at the doorway completely different, there is a garden surrounded by white bricks beside the door, making it impossible for Vernon to have been standing there. Continuity: In the scene where Harry and the Dursleys visit the zoo, the first shot you see of the snake, he is lying on a bare rock with only moss on it. He is also lying with his head facing the window, and his body is curving to the right. However, after Dudley walks away and the shot returns to the snake, his body is curving to the left and now there are plants directly behind him where there was only moss before.

Visible crew/equipment: While at the zoo, after Dudley falls into the snake exhibit there is a close-up of the Python's head. At the start of this shot, before Dudley pops out of the water, in the upper left corner of the screen a wood stick comes down to actually prod the trained snake and then quickly moves back up out of shot! (DVD fullscreen for best visibility.)

Revealing: At the snake exhibit, while Harry speaks with the Python the snake's body lies curled over a long wood log and a large rock. In the shot from outside the Python's exhibit, after the glass pane disappears Dudley falls over the rail and the snake is gone, not positioned differently, but altogether gone! In the next overhead shot inside the Python's exhibit, while Dudley falls the snake is back lying on the log and rock, in the same position as in the previous shots.

Continuity: When Harry lifts the mail from the floor at the Dursleys, the Hogwarts envelope flap is sealed shut and it has the red wax seal at the tip. Yet in the kitchen after he hands Vernon the other letters, Harry holds the Hogwarts envelope and though the red seal is on the back, the flap itself is NOT sealed shut. The wax seals differ in both shots as well.

Continuity: In the Dursley's kitchen, as Harry walks by, on the table is Vernon's cereal bowl between the coffee pot on his right and OJ on his left, plus the tea pot is in the center of the table. In the close-up as Vernon says, "Yours? Who'd be writing to you?" the cereal bowl is missing and the tea pot is near his OJ. In the next close-up of the letter, the cereal bowl is back and the OJ is now on Vernon's right, near the coffee cup.

Revealing: When Uncle Vernon picks up the letters for Harry and tears them up, you can see cuts in the envelopes, in order to make it easier for him to tear all of them at once.

Continuity: When Uncle Vernon is nailing a small piece of board to the mail slot, he nails it angled slightly to the right. When Harry's letters start pouring in and the small piece of board is ripped from the door, it is angled slightly to the left. The actual wood boards differ as well.

Continuity: At his home, when Vernon says, "Fine day, Sunday. In my opinion best day of the week. Why is that Dudley?" in the close-up his arms are crossed right over left. In the next wide shot, as Harry answers, Vernon's arms are crossed left over right. Yet in the next close-up, his arms are crossed right over left again.

Visible crew/equipment: Hagrid surprises Harry with the box of birthday cake and Harry opens the box. In the close-up of the cake, as Harry holds the box with his left hand and moves the blue string with his right hand, a crew member's finger is visible under the box, over Harry's left shoulder. Obviously it is someone holding the box underneath, while Harry holds it with one hand.

Visible crew/equipment: When Hagrid enters the hut on the rock, as well as when he leaves, the bare floor near the front door is clearly visible. However, when he says, "It's not everyday your young man turns eleven, now is it?" in the next shot as Hagrid sits down, on the floor to his left is the crew's mat with marks for the Dursleys (Fiona Shaw and Richard Griffiths), who stand near the door.

Continuity: As Hagrid aims his 'umbrella' at Dudley while he eats Harry's birthday cake, in the side shot one end of the blue string (that was tied around the cake box) hangs down the side of the table, but when Vernon rushes Petunia and Dudley off, in this shot that end of the string lies on top of the table. Yet, when Hagrid says, "We're a bit behind schedule. Best be off," the string hangs off the side again.

Continuity: When Harry and Hagrid are in Gringotts, Hagrid takes the letter from Professor Dumbleldore out of his pocket to give to the Head Goblin. The string it is tied with has a bow that runs from the top to bottom of the envelope, and the envelope is creased. When the Goblin takes it off Hagrid, it is a different envelope - the bow runs from left to right and the envelope is not creased. When viewed from where Harry and Hagrid are standing, the final shot of the envelope again shows it is creased.

Continuity: Mr. Ollivander says, "I wondered when I'd be seeing you Mr. Potter," and as he climbs down the ladder Harry is standing at the middle of the desk, away from the corner. In the next shot as Mr. Ollivander searches for a wand case Harry stands at the corner of the desk. However, in the next shot Harry stands at the middle again.

Continuity: The first wand Ollivander gives to Harry has a long slim handle with 5 or so grooves carved at the wand end. When Harry puts the wand down, the grooves are even with the binding of the book lying there. When Ollivander hands Harry the second wand, look to the left by the book and you can see that not only has the wand been moved, it is actually a different wand with a shorter, wider handle and only one groove at the wand end.

Continuity: At Platform 9 3/4, when Mrs. Weasley says, "All right, Percy, you first," as Percy walks in front of her she holds her bags in her left hand. Yet in the next shot as Percy still walks in front of her, she holds her bags in her right hand.

Continuity: When Harry and Ron are sat on the train, Ron's hair begins with a centre parting, but soon changes to a side parting.

Continuity: When Harry and Ron are on the train to Hogwarts, we see a shot of the sweets Harry has bought. Note the position of Harry's sweatshirt and that the collar shows no defects. A couple of shots later, the sweatshirt appears to have moved and more of his left neck is showing. A few shots later, when Hermione arrives, there is another shot of the sweets arranged very differently. When Hermione points her wand at Harry, there is a small tear in his sweatshirt collar.

Continuity: When we first see Hermione on the train, her tie is crooked. When she sits down, as Ron is about to change Scabbers yellow, her tie is straight and it remains that way while she is seated. When she leaves and turns around to tell Ron about the dirt on his nose, it is crooked again.

Continuity: At the start of term feast, after Harry is sorted into Gryffindor, he sits down on the right side of the table next to Ron. When the feast appears, Harry is on the other side of the table, next to Hermione.

Continuity: When the three children get past Fluffy because the harp is playing, as Fluffy wakes he dribbles on Ron's shoulder. However, when they fall down into the Devil's Snare, his shirt is completely dry.

Continuity: When Harry is in the potions class he is caught writing notes down, we see his neat writing in close up ... but when the camera angle changes we can see that the writing has changed in size to very large letters and quite messy writing.

Continuity: After Seamus' disaster with the rum spell, the mail arrives. Ron catches his mail, then holds the Daily Prophet in his right hand and the letters in his left. Yet in the next close-up he holds the Daily Prophet in his left hand and the letters in his right.

Continuity: In the overhead wide shot, before Madame Hooch says, "Good afternoon, class," as she approaches, each student stands directly behind the bristles of their broomsticks, yet in the next shot as the camera pans their feet, they stand between the bristles of their broom and the neighboring broom.

Continuity: During the flying lesson scene, some strands of Hermione's hair have very deep crimps on both sides of her face in a few shots. In other shots the crimps are far looser and still in additional shots, there are no crimps whatsoever.

Revealing: At the first flying lesson when Malfoy is about to fly, we see Hermione looking up in the sky before Malfoy gets that high.

Continuity: When trying to catch Neville's Remembrall, Harry flies straight for McGonagall's window. The window visible in the wide shot has a horizontal beam that crosses the center vertical beam, yet the window visible in the close-up just has the vertical beam. The number of stones at the sides differ as well.

Visible crew/equipment: In the scene where Hermione, Ron and Harry are returning to Gryffindor's tower room after being in the third floor room for the first time, you are able to see the feet of one of the crew. It happens just as they are passing through the picture hole, where Harry turns a couple of times to check that the "door" is closing. And it is in fact, because someone is walking behind it and pushing it shut, since the picture hangs several inches off the floor.

Visible crew/equipment: After Quirrell announces there's a troll in the dungeon, Dumbledore shouts, "Silence!" and soon continues, "Teachers will follow me to the dungeons." In the following shot of McGonagall, the wires that the candles hang from are plainly visible.

Plot hole: When the troll enters the girls' lavatory, in the wide shot as Hermione walks backwards towards the cubicles, the room becomes brighter from the storm. With this extra bright light it is simple to see that the wall between the 2nd & 3rd cubicles actually touches the floor, unlike the other cubicle walls. Yet, in the overhead shot as the troll's club slams into the cubicles, Hermione is lying under that very wall crawling away. Impossible!

Continuity: During the scene with the troll, Hermione crawls over to where the sinks are and if you look at the floor you will see that there are only a few wet spots. In the very next shot, however, the whole floor is soaked (this occurs before the troll breaks all the sinks).

Revealing: When Hermione dives under the sink to hide from the troll, in the first shot the area around her is mildly semi-wet and the fresh wet impression of a crew member's shoe/boot tread at the bottom right corner. After a quick shot of the troll, the area immediately surrounding Hermione her hand, cloak and foot are highlighted due to CG editing - all before the troll slams his club into the front basin of the sink. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)

Continuity: In the scene where Professor Quirrell removes his headwrap to reveal the concealed Voldemort, Quirrell is obviously bald. However, if you carefully watch the scene with the troll, Quirell's sideburns are present after he shudders as the troll exhales, as they are in a couple of other shots.

Visible crew/equipment: As the troll begins to lift Harry with his huge club in the girls' lavatory, in the overhead shot as Harry hangs on to the edge of the 'real' club, at the bottom left of the screen the crew's blue equipment is perfectly visible. (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)

Revealing: After being dropped by the troll in the girls' lavatory, Harry then scoots backwards on his backside and it is apparent that he is wearing knee pads under his pants.

Continuity: As Hermione walks toward the troll, just before she asks, "Is it dead?" the long towel hanging from the rod beside the sinks is visibly straight. When Harry lifts his wand with troll booger/bogey, in the shot of him as he grimaces and groans, the towel on the rod is visible behind him and it's messy. Yet when McGonagall, Snape and Quirrell walk in, the long towel is straight again.

Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match as the players ride their broomsticks, visible in quite a few shots are the two WIRES that are attached to the broom handle, between their legs, that extend down with a clamped loop that goes around their feet. In some shots the wires between their legs are edited, but the wire loops around their feet are perfectly visible, like in the following example. When the Slytherin score hits 10 onscreen, in the next shot, as Flint shouts, "Take that side," the wire is completely visible at his right foot under his cloak. Two examples where the entire wires are visible are, when Flint grabs the club and says, "Gimme that!" the wires are blatantly visible and he then proceeds to slam the Bludger into Wood, who falls. Next close-up of one of the twins, the wires are clearly visible before Flint starts to leap over him. (Don't confuse the cloak's long front ties for the wire.)

Visible crew/equipment: During the Quidditch match Harry's broomstick tries to shake him off, due to the spell. After Hermione tells Ron, "Leave it to me," in Harry's last close-up before he flips over, the seat that is attached to the broomstick, to make it more comfortable for Dan Radcliffe to sit on, is entirely visible. Glimpses of other seats can be had during the match as well.

Visible crew/equipment: At the Quidditch match, after Hermione sets Snape's cloak on fire and someone shouts, "Fire! You're on fire!" there is a close-up of Harry with his hands gripping the Nimbus 2000. In this shot, the wire rods which are attached/taped to the broomstick, near Harry's fingers, that lead under both of his red sleeves, are entirely visible.

Continuity: When Hagrid drags the Christmas tree into the castle, in the first shot there is no snow on his hair, although he has supposedly been outside for some time. When the camera angle changes his hair is now covered with snow.

Continuity: In the scene in the library's restricted section, Harry puts down his cloak and then his lamp. The lamp is several inches away from the cloak. When Filch enters Harry grabs the cloak and suddenly the lamp is now on top of the cloak, causing it to fall.

Revealing: When Harry brings Ron to see the mirror of Erised, the green side of the invisibility cloak is seen when they are running to the mirror, near the door they entered from. (If necessary use slow motion.)

Visible crew/equipment: Harry, Ron and Hermione, run to Hagrid's hut to tell him that they know about the Stone and they knock on the door. As Hagrid opens the door in the first shot looking out, Harry stands behind his tape mark and Hermione and Ron visibly stand behind their shared black tape MARK on the step.

Continuity: When Harry, Ron, and Hermione are heading to Hagrid's hut after discussing the stone, Harry says 'Why didn't I see it before?' his tie is all the way over to his right side, then when they are talking to Hagrid his tie is straight in the middle.

Continuity: When Harry Ron and Hermione run to see McGonagall, there is an hourglass, a large book and a candle all sitting directly on top of her desk. Their positions change, especially in the shot facing McGonagall, when she says, "I'm afraid Professor Dumbledore is not here...," not only is there is another small book next to the candle, the hourglass now sits on the large book.

Visible crew/equipment: After falling from the Devil's Snare, Harry tells Ron, "Lucky Hermione pays attention in Herbology." Then as Ron starts to walk toward Harry, there is a crew member's arm and hand gripping the back of Ron's shirt at the bottom! (Visible on DVD fullscreen.)

Visible crew/equipment: After entering the Key room Harry says, "They're not birds... I'll bet one of them fits that door," and as they reach the levitating broomstick, at the bottom right corner of the screen, the shadow of the overhead boom mic moves on the floor.

Visible crew/equipment: In the Key room after Hermione asks, "What's this all about?" Ron takes his wand out and starts for the door. In the wide shot facing the door as he and Hermione pass to Harry's left the BAR attached to the underside of the broomstick bristles is visible. It is not visible in other shots.

Visible crew/equipment: Being chased by the flying keys, as Harry zips by on the broomstick he tosses the key, Hermione catches it and runs to the door. In the next shot, a close-up, as she tries to unlock the door, an electrical cable hangs down beside the column, that was not in the previous shots. There is also an electrical cable coming out from under the back of Hermione's sweater that is blatantly visible as well.

Visible crew/equipment: During the chess game when the queen drives her sword through Ron's knight, if you pause it just right you can clearly tell that it's a stunt double falling off the horse.

Visible crew/equipment: After the Queen attacks the Knight's horse during the chess game, Ron goes flying back and falls. In the shot as he hits the ground, the black protective gear that he wears is visible when his grey T-shirt rolls up and the button on his left cuff is open, yet closed in the next close-up.

Continuity: After Voldemort's soul flies through Harry, he crashes down on the stairs and his hand sticks out over one of the steps. In the next shot of Harry lying there, his hand no longer lies over the step. Harry is knocked out and could not have moved.

Continuity: While Harry and Hagrid stand beside Hogwarts Express, in the shot looking up at Hagrid as he takes the album out of his pocket, his thumb is on the back cover as he begins to say, "This is for you," yet in the next shot of Harry taking the album, Hagrid's thumb is on the front cover.

Revealing: At the end of the film, when Harry is leaving on the Hogwarts Express, and the overhead shot shows the train pulling away from the station you can clearly see that Hagrid is of normal height, as the train roof is much taller than he is.

Trivia: One of the portraits on the wall is of Anne Boleyn, King Henry VIII's second wife and the mother of Queen Elizabeth. She was popularly believed to be a witch.

Revealing: When the letters burst through the letter opening that has been covered by a piece of wood, you can see that the piece of wood was pre cut.

Other: In the scene when Harry talks to the snake, the camera shows a close up of the snake, and it blinks. Snakes don't blink.
