The scene at the start of the movie where Ethan meets Denzel in the diner - it is the same diner that is used in the movie "Seven," where Morgan Freeman meets with Gwyneth Paltrow. If you watch these two scenes, you can see exactly the same camera angles (i.e. the cook cracking eggs onto the hot stove).
The film was shot on location, and some real gangs can be seen in the street when Denzel Washington goes to visit his wife/girlfriend and also during the showdown at the end.
About 30% of Denzel Washington's dialogue was improvised.
The Quality Cafe that Ethan first meets Denzel in was also the place of employment for Nicholas Cage's mom in "Gone in 60 Seconds"
