Titanic (1997) - 194 mistakes
Directed by James Cameron, starring Bernard Hill, Bill Paxton, Billy Zane, Kate Winslet, Kathy Bates, Leonardo DiCaprio (add more)
Continuity: At the very beginning of the film when Brock is talking with the big guy, they walk up stairs turn to the right, and right in front of them is a large piece of the ship with a no smoking sign on it, yet in the following shot, the large piece has turned into a very small piece, not even enough room for the sticker.
Factual error: The reception room's double doors leading into the first class dining saloon only have bronze grilles in the movie. In 1912, there was actually a pane of glass in each door with the grilles behind them on the dining room side. On the collector's DVD commentary, James Cameron mentions they didn't discover this until a later Titanic expedition in 2001.
Factual error: In the scene on deck where Leo tells Rose that he could be considered like "a tumbleweed blowing in the wind," he is using both a term and a visual imagery that would not have been widely understood in 1912. The "tumbleweed" is actually a Russian thistle that was first introduced to Victoria, B.C. in contaminated ship ballast in 1893 and was not seen in Washington state until 1907. It was only after motion pictures of the 1920's and 1930's began to show tumbleweeds moving that either the term or the visual image would have made any real sense as a commonly understood comparison.
Continuity: When Rose leaves Jack's company to retrieve help, and goes to return with the axe, she stops at the stairway with the rising water and wedges the axe on the bars. The camera cuts to behind Rose to show her removing her outerwear, and the axe is still being held up by the bars but it's nice and straight, before and after this camera shot, the axe is propped in the bars crooked at an angle.
