Thunderball (1965) - 78 mistakes

Continuity: When James Bond is fighting underwater with an opponent, the opponent rips off James' diving mask (which is blue). Then James rips another mask off another opponent who is lying dead on the ocean floor. This dead opponent's mask is black. James puts on the black mask and then he turns around and the mask is blue again.

Continuity: When Bond and Domino are walking along the beach in shallow water, Domino stands on a poison quill spine with her right foot. But when is Bond sucking the poison out, he does so from her left foot.

Revealing: During the fight at the beginning of the film, if watch it slow motion, you can that poker that is being used to strike Bond is not made of metal, it bends when the blows are being aimed.

Other: When Bond and that girl are floating at the end right after the boat crashed, the bottom of the ocean looks very shallow and very much like the bottom of a pool.

Continuity: When Domino is on the beach with 007 she is given a dog tag belonging to her deceased brother, in one shot she has both hands on the tag and moves her right arm to the sandy floor but midway through a sentence the shot turns to a different angle where she has both arms on the tag again.

Revealing: When James Bond and Felix have found the missing plane, look at the colour of the water as the helicopter lands, it is evident that is landing in shallow water, (they are supposed to be in much deeper water with sharks swimming below them) you can see the sand below. If the helicopter had landed on deeper water, the water colour would be dark blue.

Revealing: When the plane being piloted by the traitor crashes into the water, during the time while it's skidding across the surface and especially when it stops, you can see a large black wire attached to the middle of it and going into the "sky".

Continuity: Bond swims to the beach after inspecting the underside of the Disco Valante for the first time. As he walks out onto the shore, he is carrying his fins and he is wearing a red wetsuit jacket, black shorts and has a knife scabbard attached to his right leg. In this shot it is also clear to see that he is barefoot. He tosses the fins aside and unzips his jacket to remove it. After a quick edit he is tossing the jacket aside and he is now inexplicably wearing shoes and has somehow lost the diver's knife scabbard attached to his leg. There was no way to have acquired the shoes and lost the scabbard in that instant.

Audio problem: When Bond is escaping from the Island after he finds the girl is dead he comes out of a basement/cellar and opens the hatch which visibly slams open hard, but silently.

Continuity: In one scene, Bond and Leiter have landed the helicopter on the sea and Bond dives down to search for the Vulcan watch Leiter. One moment he is wearing long pants, the next moment shorts, and the next long pants again.

Factual error: When Bond finds the hi-jacked sunken Vulcan, he swims into the aircraft and towards a door at the rear of the cockpit. In the real Vulcan there's no door. There is a full-width table with racks of "black boxes" where the bomb aimer and navigator sit.

Continuity: Just after James Bond and Domino leave the gaming table to sit at a table to order, the two views of her back shows that she is holding a cigarette in her right hand that is not lit, but in the two views facing her the cigarette is lit with smoke.

Continuity: When Bond is examining the canal behind Palymra and he comes swimming, he has bare feet. But when he climbs the stairs from the water he is wearing shoes.

Other: The tape recorder in Bond's room spins very fast, and the tape is not that big. It would have to have been started not long before Bond came back, and could not possibly have been running all day.

Other: During the sequence where Bond flees the baddies during the carnival, it becomes clear that the locals made their own outfits. For a few seconds, we see a group with headpieces that read "007" - so much for "secret" agent. To add a bit of humour to the moment, a dog can be seen urinating against the passing parade.

Continuity: During the underwater fight scene at the end, Largo does not have his eye patch on under his diving mask, but when he comes onto the Disco Volante he has his mask on his forehead with the eye patch underneath.

Factual error: Before the final fight when the soldiers parachute down, they are spread out over a long stretch of water (up to 1 km, it seems). It would take them a long time to swim together (and none of them are wearing the underwater jet as Bond is). Nevertheless they are all in one group minutes later.

Factual error: The second blackmail message from SPECTRE tells the British that they must drop the ransom diamonds in a container "off the coast of Burma, in the Mergui archipelago, latitude 20 degrees north, longitude 60 degrees east." Unfortunately, 20 N, 60 E is nowhere near Burma. It's right off the coast of Oman in the Arabian peninsula, all the way on the other side of India from Burma. The actual coordinates for the Mergui archipelago are approximately 13 N 97 E. I guess there wasn't a map handy....

Continuity: When 007 is diving and fights with some divers his diving mask changes colour from blue to orange.

Continuity: When James Bond is being chased through the carnival parade he has already been shot in the calf and you can see the bloodstain on his trousers. Later in the scene as he is jumping onto one of the floats to escape, the blood stain is on the opposite leg.

Revealing: When Bond hits the fire alarm in the spa with his elbow you can see the padding on his elbow to protect against the blow.

Continuity: Bond opens the door to the bathroom, and finds Fiona Volpe in the bath. He stands by the door, and when he's talking takes a step forward. The next shot, he's standing by the door again.

Continuity: In the car scene where Fiona escapes, she did not have a cigarette lighter in her hand, but the gun with which she held James Bond. James grabs her hand with the cigarette lighter and moves it near the flame, but if that's the case she still would have had a free hand to shoot him with.

Factual error: When the operation to plant the bombs is foiled, the Disco Volante casts off, pursued by two speed-boats and a destroyer. But how could the latter, as a large (and slow) battleship, approach the yacht without arousing suspicion?

Continuity: After Bond had been dancing with Domino, Largo takes her to his jet boat to return to the Disco Volante for the night. Just when Largo asks her, "What was he saying just then?", in the background one can see Felix Leiter taking his sunglasses off and approaching Bond. Bond even turns his head towards him. The scene continues with Domino and Largo leaving in the jet boat. The scene cuts and the next shot shows Bond with Felix Leiter standing some steps behind him again, still wearing his sunglasses.

Factual error: Bond and Leiter are in the helicopter and as Bond tells Leiter to get the military personnel to show up for the show-down, he makes reference to "Miami Beach and Orlando Beach". Seeing as how Orlando, Florida is about 50+ miles inland, there is no such place as 'Orlando Beach'.

Continuity: The bullet-proof shield that rises behind the rear window on Bond's Aston Martin comes from a very noticeable slot in the sheet-metal. On all subsequent views of the car, this slot is not there,indicating a different car used for the bullet-proof shield scene.

Continuity: As Bond reaches his car just before tossing the jet-pack into the trunk, it is clear to see that the entire rear portion of the car is covered in tree droppings, especially the rear window. However, the angle changes as he is in the car and now the car is completely clean.

Continuity: Bond takes off his jet-pack and tosses it into the trunk of his Aston Martin. He tries to close the trunk lid, but it is still open a few inches as he drives away. Somehow the trunk lid appears completely closed in the next shot as he races away from the bad guys.

Audio problem: The dialogue with Largo is completely unsynchronized when he returns to the Disco Volante for the final chase and battle scene.

Factual error: The Panamanian flag on the Disco Volante is upside down throughout the film. It flew in that configuration only in 1903.

Visible crew/equipment: After Bond has escaped Largo's sharks, lighting equipment is reflected in the car door as he opens it.

Plot hole: It would not have been possible for Bond to place his jet-pack on the roof of Jaques Bovier's mansion. If he flew up there, everyone would have heard him - it's very noisy. And since it's also quite heavy, it is hard to imagine that he would have time to climb the wall, place it there, and get into the mansion, during the same time it took Jaques Bovier to get back from the church - which he left before Bond did.

Continuity: When Bond meets Domino in the diving scene, when Domino is seen from below, the sky above her is overcast. In the following wide shots the sky is clear (or almost clear).

Continuity: When the second SPECTRE tape is being played, in the first shot the left tape wheel - where the tape which is still to be played is coming from - is almost empty. In the next shot it is full.

Continuity: When Bond removes the bandage from Duval's face, he first uncovers a large square area from the nose to the hairline. In the next shot Duval's face is again fully covered except for the eyes.

Factual error: After the photo dive at Disco Volante, where Bond's air tanks are hit, he takes them off and leave them in the water. There is no air filled BCD attached to the tanks (which are quite heavy) but they float anyway.

Factual error: When Largo's henchman is hiding in Bond's shower, Bond turns on the hot water which scalds the villan. But scalding hot water is never the first which comes out of the hot faucet.

Revealing: When Largo escapes to Disco Volante, he closes the underwater hatch before Bond arrives. But the hatch can't close completely. A hole is visible (and light from behind). The hatch is obviously created in a studio, because the boat would not be able to sail - at least not that fast - with such an opening in the bottom.

Audio problem: In the final chase, when Largo says 'Jettison cocoon,' his mouth does not match the words.

Continuity: When Disco Volante drops the stern and speeds away, the right ski, where Bond is supposed to hang on, is visible. But he's not there.

Revealing: When Bond goes into the hotel room and finds the girl in the bath, he gives her a pair of gold shoes. She gets out of the bath with the towel wrapped around her. However, when you look in the mirror, you can see that she has a pair of white pants on.

Visible crew/equipment: When Bond is at the spa he breaks into Lippes' apartment and as he gets to the front door, a shadow moves across the wall next to Bond going in the opposite direction. It's not Bonds' as his is clear on the wall already, I assume a crewmember.

Visible crew/equipment: When the colonel dressed as a woman enters his house a butler opens a glass door, as he does, for a second, a big round stage light is reflected.

Continuity: When Bond is at the spa and he turns the dial on the steamer, one second the man has a pink/white towel around his neck, the next it has turned blue. In addition, when it cuts back some bottles have disappeared from a nearby steamer.

Visible crew/equipment: When the red headed woman answers the phone, a row of lights are reflected on the phone head.

Other: When the SEALs attack Largo's men, there is a scene where a SEAL swimming forward is shot with a spear gun. But the man simply doubles over; the harpoon - which should be visible protuding from his front - is not seen.

Continuity: When Bond is escaping from the Island after he finds the girl is dead he comes out of a basement/cellar and opens the hatch door. He runs off without shutting it but when in the next cut his followers reach the door, it is now shut.

Other: At Bond's nighttime diving mission to Disco Volante, a secret agent would not wear white shorts, white diving tanks and a red wetsuit.

Revealing: In the cave where the A-bombs are kept, you can see that it is not totally submerged. You can see reflections from the water surface.

Continuity: When James Bond and Domino go to the surface after he helps her with her foot stuck in the coral, there's a boat beside them. It wasn't visible underwater.

Continuity: James Bond is in the Shrublands clinic. He is snooping in a patients room. The patient (with bandaged face) opens the door. Bond hides behind the door and reaches into his jacket for his gun. A widescreen shot then shows his arm hanging down but in the next shot,his arm is back in the jacket.

Revealing: Near the end of the film, when the bombs are on board the mini-sub, Bond is spotted by Largo and swims away, but is chased by one of the other divers who has a fight with Bond: Just before they get to grips with one another, you can see that the jacket of Bond's underwater suit is already torn at the right shoulder.

Continuity: When 007 is trying to escape from the Disco Volante, having taken underwater pictures, you see the speedboat come into contact with the oxygen tanks that 007 is using, as he is spun round you can see that the tanks are undamaged, but when one of Largo's henchmen pulls the tanks out of the water, the tank on the right hand side is damaged.

Continuity: When James Bond is inside the plane that is underwater, just before he goes to remove the facemask of the dead pilot Angelo, watch closely as Bond is holding a torch in his left hand and he is about to remove the mask with his right hand, but in the next shot, it is Bond's left hand hand that removes the mask and the torch is nowhere to be seen.

Revealing: When the water is shooting out from the exhaust pipes of the Aston Martin, watch how easily the chasing gunmen fall down, indeed the one on the right starts to fall back before the water reaches him.

Continuity: During the fight at the beginning of the film, you can see the fire in the fireplace burning brightly but when Bond is throttling his attacker with the poker, you now see that the fire (though partially hidden by the table) has nearly gone out, and does not burn as brightly.

Continuity: The scene with the Aston when Lippe's car is blown up by the motor bike rider is filmed at Silverstone. You can see the Stowe grandstands in the background.

Continuity: In the bit where the power on the island is turned off, while Largo is getting ready in his room, you can see the moonlight that is coming through the grill of the door suddenly "turn on" as the lights go out.

Continuity: Bond's watch changes wrists several times when he speaks to the receptionist at the health farm.

Visible crew/equipment: When the cars arrive at the mansion after attending the funeral, one of the car doors opens, and the film crew's lighting equipment is reflected in the door.

Audio problem: When Bond comes up from the basement under Palymra, the door swings open and drops by itself. It looks like it is a quite heavy steel door, but nevertheless it does not make a sound.

Continuity: After Vargas is harpooned, Bond is walking quickly up the beach with Domino toward his car. He tells her to go straight back to Palmyra. Her speed boat is anchored off-shore in the opposite direction. Shouldn't she be heading for the boat and not the car?

Continuity: When the rear part/gunners' platform of the Disco Volante fights a delaying action, there are two speed-boats and a destroyer on the 'good' side. But although two close shots show the boats firing their on-board machine guns, only the platform and the battleship are visible in the same frame during the shoot-outs. There is no further indication that the speed-boats are destroyed or further involved in the eventual destruction of the platform.

Revealing: At the end of the film in the underwater fight scene, when Bond is zooming through the water, you can see the cable pulling him along through the water

Continuity: Just after Vargas has been harpooned and impaled to the tree, watch the position of Domino's hands as she says to Bond "I'm doing this for my brother for what he did to him" in between shots: When she has her back to the camera you cannot see her hands, but when you see Bond from behind, she has both of her hands on his shoulders.

Other: At the beginning of the film, when Bond and the woman are getting into the Aston Martin, the roof and boot of the car are covered in dust, but the rear window is clean.

Continuity: Near the end of the film as James Bond swims towards Palmeras, he gets out of the water to go up a flight of steps, and you see that he is wearing red shorts that are wet as he gets to the top. You then see a shot of Largo's henchmen getting into the back of a truck, as Bond goes down the next flight of steps the shorts are no longer wet, and they are now much lighter in colour.

Continuity: When Bond and Felix go out for the first time to search for the missing plane, Bond's hair has a parting to the left and is wearing watch on his left arm, but at the moment when they are flying over Largo's house, Bond is looking through a pair of binoculars. As he says to Felix "separate pools for sharks, no less" his hair is now parted on the right and his watch is now on his right arm, also watch out for the mouthpiece on Felix's headphones - it changes from left to right.

Revealing: When James Bond and Felix go out in the helicopter for the second time to search for the mising plane, at the moment when Bond is looking through the pair of binoculars, and when Felix says "you won't find it down there, that's the Golden grotto" just look how slowly the rotor blades are turning, at this speed there is no way that the helicopter could possibly fly and besides, there is hardly any noise from the engine.

Continuity: There is an underwater love scene between Sean Connery and Claudine Auger. The air hose on Claudine Auger's scuba tank switches from one side to the other during the scene.

Continuity: Vargas is behind Bond when he is on the beach talking to Domino. Bond turns and shoots a harpoon at Vargas. In the previous shot Vargas was walking towards Bond and Domino and was not near a tree. But when he is hit in the next shot, he gets pinned to a tree with the harpoon.

Continuity: At the carnival scene Bond gets shot in the calf, but in the underwater fight there is no mark on either of his calves.

Continuity: One of the gadgets which Q gives to Bond is a mini air tank, "good for about four minutes of air." He's very specific about this number. In the huge climactic underwater battle scene, Bond Against The Hordes, 007 puts on the mini tank and proceeds to fight, vigorously, for a solid ten minutes without borrowing anyone else's tank. He either had gills implanted or can fight while holding his breath for enormously long periods of time.

Continuity: In the beginning of the movie, Bond was running away from several people that were trying to kill him. During the scene, Bond stopped running and put a helmet on. Then the next shot showed the assassins running toward him. Then it showed Bond in the next shot with a big jetpack on his back that he hadn't been carrying around. It just appeared on him.

Continuity: When the woman in black locks the door and puts her coat on a chair, you can see her face through the veil, but as Bond rises from his chair, the veil has become much darker and we're unable to see the face behind it.

Continuity: One for the wristwatch enthusiasts: Towards the end when Bond goes into the water he checks the time on his Omega. Later he looks at his watch and he's wearing the Breitling with built-in Geiger counter that Q gave him. Both shots are long and clear, probably because the watchmakers paid for them.

Continuity: When James Bond and Domino come out of the water after their underwater love scene, 007 suddenly wears a shirt and Domino's got a towel.
