Batman Returns (1992) - 138 mistakes

Continuity: Just before Batman takes his mask off at the end, the black makeup around his eyes vanishes while the mask is still on.

Continuity: In Schreck's department store, when Catwoman is doing her cartwheels, her heels collapse.

Revealing: In one scene, the Penguin is making a "bat" shadow puppet on the ceiling. But there's no light behind his hands. If there's no light, there's no shadow.

Revealing: When the penguin goes into the cemetery, he bumps a tombstone and it moves. [Almost certainly a tribute to legendarily poor director Ed Wood, who Tim Burton later directed a biopic of - this exact thing happened in one of his films.]

Continuity: In Batman's first battle with the Red Triangle Circus gang he manages to escape from a fire eater by turning his batmobile around and burning the guy with the rear exhaust jet. He does this by flicking a switch (outlined in caution symbols) next to the steering wheel. When the Penguin takes Batman for a ride there is a television screen where the switch is supposed to be. When Batman blows the Batmobile apart to get though a narrow alley the switch is back in place. Not only that but the switch seems to control just about every major system on the car including the lights, shield cover, gun turrets (in the first movie), canopy etc.

Continuity: When Selina returns home from work she takes milk out of the fridge and pours her cat some, leaving the carton on the worktop. She then runs to work, and when she returns after being changed to 'catwoman', the milk has vanished from the worktop.

Continuity: When the Penguin bites the guy on the nose, while he is talking to Max Shreck afterward the blood on his face is there, then it disappears, then it's there again.

Continuity: When Selina puts her soft toys into the sink, and begins to push them down into the shredder hole, between shots the positions of the teddies in the sink differ.

Revealing: When The Penguin shoots the clown who says "Killing sleeping children...", as the clown falls back to the floor, you can clearly see he falls on a wrinkled, soft mat which has unsuccessfully tried to be disguised.

Continuity: When the Penguin is looking out of the barred sewer hole, from an inside shot we see the penguin holding two bars, and in between the bars he is holding are two bars. In the next shot, there are four bars in between.

Revealing: When the penguin drives the Batmobile remotely, the cars it smashes are damaged just before it hits them.

Continuity: Catwoman's lipstick smears down onto her chin when she puts The Penguin's bird in her mouth, yet in the shot just before she gives herself a "bath", the lipstick momentarily is gone.

Continuity: When Selina retrieves her papers from the floor, she places them in a disorderly pile beside the clown. In the shot when she zaps the clown with the taser, the papers have changed position and are stacked neat.

Continuity: When Selina becomes enraged and trashes her apartment, she grabs a frying pan off of the oven hob, which was not there previously, when she entered her apartment.

Other: When the Penguin is talking on the staircase to his audience of voters, he gives a badge to one young woman. As he lifts it up it is clearly a pin-on design button, however the Penguin leans forward as presses the badge against her blouse as if it were a stick-on design. The badge then stays on the blouse and doesn’t fall.

Visible crew/equipment: When the large present drives out into the middle of the Christmas procession, as the lid of the gift springs up, a long white wire can be see attached to the lid, which wasn’t there beforehand.

Continuity: The crib changes buoyancy throughout the opening credits; for example in one shot the crib slides down a chute and sinks very low in the water. In the next shot the crib is out much higher.

Continuity: The rubble and debris from the piece of wall which Batman tore from the wall, which lies beside the clown, differs between shots, and so does the clowns position.

Continuity: When the Penguin picks up the ointment bottles, he throws them up and they land on the bed and pillows. These bottles and Catwoman's whip, which lays on the center of the bed, keep changing position.

Continuity: Catwoman looks at the Penguins enemy list, and it is left with the top page flipped up, but when Catwoman puts the bird in her mouth, the page is back to normal.

Plot hole: There is a gun laying in front of the clown henchman which The Penguin shot. Where did this come from?

Continuity: When Selina returns home from work a second time she takes milk out of the fridge and pours her cat some. She then starts to drink some, spilling it all down her neck and blouse. When it cuts though her neck and blouse are suddenly cleaned up.

Continuity: When Selina is creating her Catwoman suit, the items she tips out from her sewing kit box change formation and position.

Revealing: When Batman makes his first dramatic entrance to fight the clowns in his Batmobile, that clearly isn't snow being churned up by the wheels of his car.

Continuity: During shots, before the shot of the two cats coming through the window and onto the table, the items on the table (lamp, snowglobe, glowing santa, etc.) change positions.

Visible crew/equipment: After Selina taser's the henchman, it cuts to the Mayor thanking Batman. As the camera pans past Batman, a noticeable shadow is cast on him.

Continuity: When the Penguin goes to visit his parents grave, the umbrella he drops before he walks up to it changes position between shots, alternation from beside / in front of the bush.

Continuity: When the Penguin shoots the clown henchman for questioning his scheme, the clown's white hair cap flies off. In the next shot, as the Penguin kicks the clown into the water, it is back on his head.

Continuity: The location of The Penguin when he falls through the window and into the pool, changes. He moves much further away from the concrete platform.

Continuity: The piece of wall that Batman yanks out of the wall with his gadget is clearly in a much different shape after it has been taken out.

Continuity: When the camera pans up to show the Schrek headquaters, in the first shot a warm blue light is coming from the windows, and no pillar lights are on. In an overhead shot bright light is on, and emitted.

Continuity: When Selina removes her catwoman mask in front of Max, her hair is suddenly much more messy and tangled in the second shot where she says "Because he *is* Batman you moron."

Revealing: When The Penguin is controlling the Batmobile, in one shot Batman taps the speedometer and the whole dashboard clearly wobbles back and forth, as it were made of rubber.

Continuity: When the joker henchman busts the door and lifts up a flaming stick to blow at a pile of teddys, the angle in which he holds the stick differs through consecutive shots.

Continuity: After the Penguin bites the male image consultants nose, he has no blood on his chin. In the next shot it is covered in blood.

Continuity: The little Bat-Gadget that Batman programs, to knock out the four gang members changes from sailing at head height, to suddenly at about a foot off of the ground between shots, so that the poodle can snatch it.

Continuity: When Selina puts her soft toys into the sink, she grabs a wooden spoon and begins to stab a pink teddy down into the shredder. But in a closeup she is now pushing a soft toy monkey into the shredder.

Continuity: Batman's large fish tank (which opens the sphinx statue) is not there in the shot where Bruce is sitting in his chair and the Batman symbol is then shone on his bookcase.

Revealing: Outline of the broken piece Batman will yank out of the wall to save Selina is visible before he makes it.

Continuity: Max's big outer coat and his patterned scarf suddenly disappear between shots, when he leads the Penguin over to his image consultants.

Continuity: When the Penguin is controlling Batman’s batmobile, when the batmobile hits a police car, the car flies into a ‘24 Hours’ shop. Between shots the amount of hubcaps and tires hanging on the brick wall around the doorway of the ‘24 Hours’ changes.

Continuity: When the Penguin is talking to his penguin audience about stealing first, second, third and fourth born children, the penguins chair, box and umbrella stand in the background keep changing position.

Continuity: When Catwoman smashes a glass display case in Schrek’s department store, the position of the items on and around the case change between shots.

Continuity: When the Penguin pours Catwoman a glass of champagne, the properties of the bubbles and the actual amount of champagne in Catwoman’s glass differs.

Visible crew/equipment: When the Penguin is controlling Batman’s batmobile, when the batmobile hit’s a police car a wire attached to police car, pulling it back is visible.

Continuity: After Selina pours Max Schrek his coffee in the first boardroom meeting, she walks around his chair twice.

Continuity: Catwoman clearly hits Batman in the centre of his chest with her hand, yet later we see the claw marks are on the right side of his stomach.

Audio problem: When Selina is pushed from to window, her scream doesn’t match her mouth movement.

Continuity: Selina grabs some stuffed animals and throws them in the sink, where she starts jamming a monkey down the garborator. We cut to her face, and when we cut back to the sink, all the other stuffed animals are gone, but we know she hasn't had a chance to shred them because she is still shredding the last of the monkey.

Continuity: In the scene where Catwoman and Batman fight each other you can see Catwoman's boots change several times from high heels to flat heels.

Continuity: Catwoman's high heels are missing when she jumps on the bouncing-mat in the toy store.

Visible crew/equipment: Catwoman breaks into the department store to blow it up. She punches her fingers through a metal access panel to get to the gas lines. Look closely at the panel - the holes are already in place at the exact locations where she punches through, they're just covered with white paint or putty.

Continuity: Just after Bruce has spoken to Alfred about him letting Vicky Vale into the Batcave in the past, we see him pulling his jacket on from behind. He puts his right arm in, then starts to reach behind himself to get his left arm in. The shot then cuts to seeing him from the front, and we see him reach behind himself again.

Continuity: When Max is walking up to Selina from behind, we see her flipping through files, and she puts the paper back down into the drawer. In the very next closeup she’s suddenly looking at another file.

Continuity: At Wayne Manor, Bruce receives the projected bat signal while in his study. As he stands up, the circle of light hits only the last shelf on the bookshelf behind Bruce. But in the next shot, the light circle is much lower and hits almost the entire bookshelf.

Revealing: The snow that they use floats on water in almost every scene.

Continuity: When Max is talking to Bruce in his office, the pen and the tray with the coffee pot on it move closer between shots, as Max gets up from his chair.

Continuity: When Selina puts the pink teddy down the shredder, it begins to spit and churn out stuffing and feathers. However in the next shot of Selina grabbing the frying pan, the shredding of the teddy has mysteriously stopped.

Continuity: When Selina enters her apartment after going back to work, we can see that their is no wooden spoon in her sink draining rack, yet one appears later when she puts the teddies in the sink.

Continuity: When there's an overhead shot of the crowd in front of the Hall of Records, there is a person in bright red clothing amidst the people near the doors, pushing against a police officer, but in the next shot when Shreck is speaking to the press, the person is nowhere to be found and could not have exited the crowd in that short time.

Continuity: When Penguin removes the manhole cover above him right before the Mayor's baby is stolen, he places it right next to the edge of the manhole, but when the baby snatcher jumps in, it is further away.

Continuity: When the Penguin is first talking to Max, about him helping him emerge from the sewers, he spits as he speaks, and black spit covers his chin. The spit disappears when he begins to show Max the toxic waste, then reappears and vanishes again.

Audio problem: When Selina returns home from work the first time and Miss Kitty comes in through the window, Selina pours some milk into the cat bowl and Miss Kitty begins to lap the milk (out of shot). Then, without a break in the lapping, Miss Kitty meows again as a cue for one of Selina's lines, but the lapping sounds continue underneath the meow. It's an open-mouth meow, too, and, as far as I know, no cat can both meow and drink at the same time.

Continuity: When Catwoman is electrocuting Max, when you see a view of the explosion from above, you can see Max walk off the set through the explosion. It is definitely him, not Catwoman!!! (check the clothing.)

Continuity: When Selina arrives back home after being pushed out the window, she presses her answering machine button and brings her arm to her side. In the next shot her hand is on the machine again.

Continuity: When the Cobblepots throw the pram into the lake, in a wide shot the water surrounding it is rippling and there isn't much snow on the water. In the closeup the water is still and the lake is covered in snowflakes.

Continuity: When Catwoman saves the woman from the alleyman, she has high heels on, but after she says "I am Catwoman. Hear me roar." she starts doing backflips, and clearly has flat black shoes on.

Continuity: When Catwoman and Batman are fighting on the roof, there is a big metal ladder attached to the ledge to the side of them, which keeps disappearing.

Continuity: During the scene in Schrek’s department store, Catwoman has a tail clipped onto her beltline which keeps disappearing. It is visible when she jumps from the trampoline, and smashes open the door to the gas, but is missing in all the other shots.

Continuity: The yellow bottles of fish food jump from the radio to the fridge, from when Selina arrives home the first time, goes off back to work, then returns back home the second time.

Continuity: When Batman is nearing the two clowns juggling flames, the clowns drop their flaming batons twice between shots.

Continuity: When the cats are bringing Selina back to life in the alley, the paw prints they make in the snow around her body are subsequently there / gone. It is not snowing, so fresh snow could not make them vanish.

Visible crew/equipment: When the Penguin dies and the penguins slide him into the water you can see the slide-board he was laying on slip out ahead of him under the water. It is also very clear that the penguins aren’t even touching him as they pull him into the water.

Revealing: When the clown steals the mayors baby, he does a cartwheel down into the sewers via a manhole. As he falls down the manhole, the “brick” wall of the manhole clearly shakes as the clown jumps down.

Revealing: When saving the Ice Princess, Catwoman throws a chair at Batman. The chair is clearly broken and damaged, even before it makes contact with Batman.

Continuity: Catwoman is about to land a kick in Batman’s face, but from a side angle it hits him square in the chest.

Continuity: When Catwoman gives Max Schrek the taser-gun kiss, the black wire above them falls down at least four times.

Audio problem: When the mayor's baby is first stolen, the audience gasps in a very fake way. When the Penguin reveals his plan to steal the first-born sons to the party members later in the movie, they gasp the exact same sound effect. They actually do it a third time, later in Penguin's speech, but it's very quiet.

Audio problem: The Batmobile is supposed to be powered by a Jet engine. The sound in the sequel is dubbed rather flawlessly except for two brief instances when you can hear the 8 cylinder piston engine.

Audio problem: When Oswald holds Catwoman's cat down to the bed while she puts his bird in her mouth, hisses and meows are heard from the cat, but it doesn't open it's mouth.

Revealing: When Penguin is controlling Batman's car, cars he is hitting throughout the scene are seen prematurely moving out of the way before he hits them.

Continuity: When Oswald starts shooting bullets out of his umbrella at his failed mayor speech, the crowd ducks down on the stairs, at the edge of the red stage, laying down their campaign signs. In the next shot some of the crowd and signs have vanished from around the stage, then reappear in the next shot.

Continuity: The fruit and vegetables (tomatoes, lettuces, eggs etc.) thrown at Oswald at his speech, litter the stage as well. The amount and position of these items laying all over the stage changes between shots.

Continuity: Just after Selina has hit the ground, we see a shot from above, with her lying seemingly dead in the snow. In the next shot the pattern of the snow around her is completely different.

Continuity: After Selina blows up Schrek's store, her and Batman begin to fight on the rooftops opposite. When Batman is pushed over the ledge, hanging from Catwoman's whip, the Schrek store is visible behind Batman, fully intact.

Continuity: As Oswald and Max talk beside the water cooler, the shape, size and prominence of the blood on Oswald's shirt, beside his black scarf, changes a few times.

Continuity: The position of the cards and notices stuck on Seleia's fridge change, from when she gets the milk out of the fridge when she's normal, to when she goes back to the fridge later, after being pushed from the window.

Continuity: The length of the bar which comes out of the side of the batmobile, which subsequently knocks over the clown twirling the batons, changes between shots.

Continuity: After Max Schrek throws some of the presents out to the crowd, when it cuts back, between shots a large green present on the top of the pile vanishes.

Revealing: When the clown grabs the Mayors baby, it is obviously a doll.

Continuity: When Batman fights Catwoman, he hits her to the floor, and the thick handled end of her whip dangles down and touches the ground. In the next shot it is wrapped and tucked in a circle around her chest.

Continuity: When Batman is on the roof, his cape becomes a glider, the glider is separate from his cape as his cape falls off behind him. When he floats down the glider cape once again resembles his regular cape.

Continuity: Batman is monitoring the progress of the rocket-laden penguins via radar. At every screen refresh, about one per second, the penguins have moved about half a street, way too fast for the way they waddle.

Continuity: Selina dumps her coat, scarf and bag on the sofa seat when she gets home. In another shot the coat and scarf have changed position, and the bag is gone.

Continuity: When Selina is listening to her answering machine in her apartment, the items on the pull-out drawer, under the shelf with the fishbowl on it, change and move around between shots.

Continuity: When Alfred is drving Bruce in the car at the end of the film, the same car can be seen parked on the street, in different places, from different angles, about five or six times.

Continuity: When Catwoman pulls Max Schrek up out of the water, Max's hair is very wet, and is stuck down flat on his forehead. In the very next shot it is much drier and is wavier and stringy.

Continuity: When The Penguin is explaining his scheme about stealing the children fron their cribs and sending them to their watery graves, a black line of spit runs down his chin. When he turns around it's gone.

Continuity: When The Penguin starts to shoot at the booing crowd from his umbrella, the same microphone, on the far left, falls from the podium twice in different shots.

Continuity: As the Ice Princess falls down from the skyscraper, it is clear she will not land on the lighting button, but she does. Between shots the lighting button moves closer to the edge of the stage too.

Continuity: When Batman and Catwoman fight in front of the Ice Princess, Catwoman's black whip hangs from the ceiling. As she does backflips over to the Ice Princess, the whip vanishes for a shot.

Continuity: When Batman pulls the gag cloth from the Ice Princess' mouth, we see a reverse shot, with the Ice Princess' back totally bare. In the next shot two strips of cloth hang down her back.

Continuity: When Batman spots the Ice Princess tied up, he shoots his glider and the tip lands in a rough stone wall, but in the next shot as he glides down along the wire, the tip is embedded in a rusty metal wall.

Continuity: The kettles on the oven hobs in Selina's apartment change their position and they change which hob they are on as well between the shots of Selina entering her apartment, and her grabbing the frying pan.

Continuity: When Selina is wrecking her apartment, she grabs a frying pan and throws it at a small display case, smashing all the glass and ornaments. Between shots the glass/ornaments on the case shelves differs.

Continuity: As Selina is about to make her cat suit, she grabs a pair of blue handled scissors, yet in the next shot they’re pink.

Continuity: The positions of the cats on Selina’s table changes instantly between shots. They swap places and are suddenly doing different things.

Revealing: When Batman dives off the building with his bat-glider, there are two wires visible coming off his shoulders, most easily visible before he reaches the horizontal.

Factual error: When the penguin is going through the birth certificates in the library, he finds a certificate and begins to write. The name of the baby on the certificate is 'Peter Lindsey' but the penguins writes down 'Matthew Gruen.'

Visible crew/equipment: After the policemen shoot Batman, he falls backwards and slides down the circular ledge. When it cuts to a close-up of him dropping on his back to the ground, the hand of the crewmember placing him down to the ground is visible.

Continuity: When Oswald is in The Hall of Records, it is snowing heavily. In the next shot of Batman coming around the corner in his batmobile, it isn't snowing. In all following shots it's snowing heavily again.

Continuity: When Oswald goes upstairs and finds Catwoman on his bed, he goes over and hangs his hat over the end of an umbrella in the rack. When he picks up an umbrella as he talks with Catwoman, the hat is now in a different position.

Continuity: The position of the fish beside the water cooler changes between shots.

Continuity: When Batman is fighting some goons right before his boomerang is stolen by a poodle, one of the goons attacks him with a metal pipe, which both opponents take hold of in one shot. Batman then delivers a blow to the assailant, the view shifts further away, and we can see that neither Batman or the goon have the pipe, and it is nowhere on the ground nearby. After this, Batman turns to his right to defend against another goon and we see another enemy coming at him from behind, but after the view shifts to another shot and then back to Batman, this enemy is nowhere to be found.

Continuity: When Max leads the Penguin over to the two image consultants, Josh, the male one, reaches back with his right hand for a cigar. In the next shot he's using his left hand.

Continuity: When Selina is pouring Max his coffee, the kettle spout changes position.

Continuity: When Alfred is walking off of the pavement, and across the grate, we see the penguins hands sticking out of the sewer bars. Then it shows another shot of Alfred looking at the bars, only the snow around and under the bars has changed.

Continuity: In the shot of Mr. and Mrs. Cobblepot by the window, they both hold a martini. Mr. Cobblepot's martini glass is full to the top. But after the baby pulls the cat into his crib, Mr. C's martini glass is suddenly only a quarter full.

Other: The security guard clearly throws his gun out of hand even before Catwoman's whip touches it.

Revealing: On the rooftop, Catwoman digs her claw into Batman's chest, but she clearly just puts her hand flat on his chest and you can clearly see in the first shot no claw is left embedded in his suit.

Visible crew/equipment: When the monkey jumps onto the cage in which Max Schrek is prisoner, you can see a cable clipped to its jacket it is wearing.

Continuity: When The Penguin shouts "I am not a human being..." he throws his black coat and shirt to the floor. His coat lays in front of him, but in the next shot it is behind him. His shirt also changes position.

Continuity: As the Penguin is walking down the steps toward the podium, before Batman plays the messages the Penguin said, a man and a woman standing to the left of the podium swap places between shots.

Continuity: When Selina arrives home from work, she walks around and listens to her answering machine. She then has to run off to work. When she gets back from work a second time, the dishes and cups in the draining tray beside her sink have totally changed.

Continuity: After Batman pulls the wires from the batmobile roof, the wires disappear/reappear during the scene.

Continuity: At the point where the Penguin controls Batman's car from his trailer, we see shots from the inside and outside of his trailer. The Penguin rides the mini-Batmobile in his trailer like crazy, therefore the trailer shakes like hell from the outside, however, the shots inside show ONLY the mini-Batmobile shaking, the floor and trailer seem rock-solid.

Continuity: When the circus and Batman first make their appearance, one of the circus men grabs Selina Kyle and threatens Batman with a Stun Gun. After the man is knocked unconscious, Selina "zaps" the man. I don't know how many of your are familiar with stun guns but when they are activated on someone or something they don't spark or make a sound. The sound is only heard if held up in the air and is not in contact with anything. Yet when she zaps the man, there is a clear shocking sound.

Visible crew/equipment: After the scene where Selina shocks the clown henchman with the taser, it cuts to the Mayor thanking Batman. As they walk down off of the walkway and continue down the road, if you look on the floor behind Batman you can see black camera tracks on the floor of the raised, bridge walkway.

Continuity: When Max Schrek leads the Penguin over to the image consultants, two women standing behind them suddenly vanish.

Audio problem: On the batmobile screen, the Penguin says “Just relax…” but when Batman plays the Penguin’s audio back on the tannoy speakers, it is “Hey, just relax…”

Revealing: In the scene where Selina Kyle starts spray painting the wall and closet, you can see there was a previous line sprayed and then poorly covered with another thin coat of paint.

Continuity: In the scene where the Batmobile diagnostics detects a foreign object, it shows it being located approximately to the front-left of the windshield. It is also a 2D plan view. Yet Batman automatically knows it is BELOW the car and punches through the floor directly beneath him, which is nowhere near where the Batmobile detects it.

Continuity: When the baby basket is floating through the sewers, there are shadows but no lights, except for one scene where the lights are under water.

Continuity: When Selina's looking at the files, the filing cabinets behind her have a wide gap between them. In the next shot they’re pushed right next to each other. The items on top (medals, ornaments, etc.) also change.

Continuity: When the penguin is at his parents grave, as he kneels, between shots the roses he holds change completely. In one shot one of the roses has a leaf on the stem, right under the rosebud. In the next shot the leaf has vanished.

Continuity: When Alfred is walking along with his red gift bag, there is a present at the top of the bag which changes position between shots.

Continuity: The position of the manhole cover, in relation to the manhole changes and the snow around it clears.

Continuity: When Oswald Cobblepot is in his crib as a baby, in outside shots the rubber duck on the string is swaying back and forth. In shots through the crib bars, it is dead still.
