Romancing the Stone (1984) - 22 mistakes

Revealing: When Michael Douglas attempts to swing on a vine over a deep abyss, the (fake) rock that he runs into on the other side gives like a marshmallow.

Continuity: When Ralph drives off with Zolo in the car and turns around in the road, the bus passengers are shown further up the road. However, once the car is in forward motion, they are not seen again.

Continuity: When Joan tries to cross the gorge on the decrepit bridge the distance of planks on this bridge differs largely, depending on the camera angle.

Continuity: Before Joan and Jack go down the waterfall in Ralph's car they are seen heading for the sliding roof to get out. In the next, wide shot a split second later they are hanging on to the sides.

Continuity: When Jack goes down the mud slide he loses his hat. In the next shot the hat is back on his head.

Continuity: When Jack and Joan finally get to Cartagena he gives her a necklace when they are at dinner. When he is holding the necklace in his hand it looks like a bead necklace. Then when he puts it on her it is a totally different kind of necklace.

Continuity: When Joan and her editor wait for a cab to take her to the airport it is snowing in some camera angles, in others not. Her jacket is either dry or wet correspondingly.

Revealing: It's quite visible that the vine Jack uses to cross the gorge is a rope.

Continuity: When Zolo stops Ralph's car he shows him a police ID. The way he holds up the ID differs completely, depending on the camera angle.

Factual error: When Ralph's Renault R4 goes head on into the shallow and rocky river it emerges without a dent.

Continuity: Right after the bus crash and shootout at the beginning of the movie, it starts to pour with rain and Jack and Joan are walking along the dirt road. The road gives way and Jack and Joan fall down a slope. They end up in a muddy pool and as Jack comes up for air (between Joan's thighs), you can see his wet hair is plastered forward over his ears in one shot and in the next shot it has been pushed neatly back behind his ears - this sequence is repeated a couple of times.

Continuity: When Juan jumps the creek in his truck it lands on the other side, and then lands again in a following shot.

Audio problem: When Jack digs for the statue in the puddle, and he hits it, it makes a sound like iron against ceramics, but the bunny statue is wrapped in hay and cloth. The wrapping is so thick that the spade would not be able to touch the statue, so it would make no sound at all when he hit it with the spade.

Continuity: When Joan is looking for paper tissue to wipe off the tears she sheds over her own book she finally blows her nose with a note stuck to the mirror, saying "Don't forget - buy tissue". The note was stuck on the left side of the mirror, but when she grabs it in close-up it's stuck in the middle.

Continuity: When Joan leaves for the airport by taxi she's being watched by Zolo who is sitting in his car. Depending on the camera angle, his windshield wipers are either in normal or in interval mode.

Continuity: When Jack is digging for the stone his front hair is dangling loosely, but in all frontal shots when he looks at Joan it's stuck to his forehead.

Continuity: When Jack studies the map in the plane wreck it's open in wide shots and folded in close-ups.

Factual error: Cartagena has a very modern airport (Pedro de Heredia) even when the movie was made.

Visible crew/equipment: In every shot where "the kid" is driving the red sports car, you can see that there is nobody in the car with him - Elaine should be in the passenger seat. Even slumped over unconscious, she'd be visible.

Continuity: When Joan sits and has a drink after crossing the gorge her hair is a total mess. Next, when they push off into the jungle it's neatly combed and tied to a ponytail.

Continuity: When Elaine gets knocked out with the ball her hat falls to the ground, next to her car. When the boy drives off the hat is gone.

Continuity: When Elaine is kidnapped she gets knocked out with a ball tied to a rope. Before the young kidnapper throws the ball he swings it around his head first anti-clockwise, then, in the next shot, clockwise.
