To make the robot in the movie, first they used a small puppet and had the puppeteers under the floor controlling it through sticks. To make the huge robot, they had a "bam bot" for ramming through walls and windows, a technical robot that had all the circuitry to make the antennae move and the nose to steam, and a version where there were only the feet and the body (they would later animate the arms and legs.)
